Walmart - Kailua Kona, HI

We did our shopping at Walmart as it has most things. Some of the shelves were low, be prepared to pay a little extra for groceries and produce. But if you want to pick up a souvenir, this is the place. T-shirts, coffee and other trinkets. Plus you never know what you'll see on your way out. Located in Kona.

Walmart always have the best value and we even ate at the McDonalds inside the store and the prices were really good!

The energy was high at the entrance. Employees playing feel good music and cheering when people donated or rounded up.

We were vacationing on the big island back in 2015 and my wife forgot her swim cover so she found one here at a reasonable price. She still remembers going there and tells our grandkids I flew to Hawaii to get that.

Best overall grocery prices on the island and a decent selection. Plus they have such a large non- grocery portion that it can be a good “one stop” option. Just like the mainland, there can be specific items that are less expensive at other stores, but we found their prices to be best overall. On the downside: produce, bakery, and meat/butcher are very limited and it’s better to go to KT, Safeway, or Matsuyuma for those.

Same as usual for a Hawai'i store -- they have difficulty getting restocked on some items, and others that are available in mainland stores just aren't in Hawai'i, or IF it can be shipped, it takes extra days & cost. Example: 2018, 26" men's mountain bicycle 21-speed, on sale for $99 (regular price $125) with free shipping EXCEPT TO HAWAI'I, shipping cost was $88.25 additional. Not sure what it might be now with Walmart+ membership. Several items aren't stocked and won't ship, including external phone battery chargers and portable generators. It's the price of
Island living.

Major reshuffling of items. Don't leave home without your phone; you'll need the Walmart app to find anything. Prices on household cleaning products have gone way up in 3 years, example: large bleach used to cost $4.65 tax included, now $7.10.

Capital One is discontinuing its Walmart branded credit card. As a replacement, I received a Capital One Quicksilver card in the mail today. Just after, Capital One sent me Savor card to use instead of Quicksilver.

Still the same. Store doesn't stock regular items available on mainland. Many shelves empty.

07/15/25: in store McDonald's is odd, as usual. I will review them separately, but note: they STILL don't have large cups for coffee.
