Shanco Roofing - Gaithersburg, MD

I worked with Shanco twice in the past year—first to replace my roof (August 2024), then for new Hardi Board siding (May 2025).
While I was initially happy with the roof work, things unraveled with the siding project. Though I signed the contract in January, the job didn’t begin until May, despite repeated emails and calls. No explanation was ever given for the delay.

After installation, the siding looked fine to my untrained eye, but a construction-savvy friend pointed out sloppy workmanship: overdriven nails, underdriven nails, and other missed details. Shanco eventually sent their team back to fix some of the issues, which seemed rooted in poor oversight and a disconnect between sales and labor.

The larger issue emerged right as the siding work wrapped up—I found mold growing on one of my bedroom ceiling. I suspected this was tied to the roof they’d installed eight months prior. Their siding supervisor told me that there was no active leak from the roof after checking the attic but couldn’t determine the cause of the mold. So I hired an independent roof inspector. He uncovered troubling problems with the roof: water-damaged plywood left in place, exposed nails where the mold appeared, shingles with nails installed too close to the shingle transition line, and missing overhangs.

While the leak may have existed before the roof replacement, Shanco’s installation didn’t resolve the underlying issue—and may have made things worse. Again, they sent the subcontractor back to make repairs.

My conclusion: some of Shanco’s work on both roof and siding was subpar, and I had to chase them to fix mistakes.

One final heads-up: Shanco doesn’t inspect attics before installing a roof. They include this policy in their contracts, but it’s something homeowners should think twice about. A roofing system includes what’s underneath—and skipping an attic inspection might mean serious problems go unnoticed.

I recently had my roof and gutters replaced. Jacob Conway arranged the inspection and walked me through my replacement options. He was thorough and responded to all my questions. Chad Williams was the onsite project manager. He was communicative from the beginning to the end of the project. It look less than a day to have the roof installed. The team kept the site clean and were very efficient. I would highly recommend Shanco!

I recently had Shanco do not only my roof but also replace my mom’s roof. They did both of our roofs and we also did new gutters and downspouts. I was so extremely impressed with the gentleman that I dealt with, Christian, Chad And Bruce, they walked me through everything from beginning to end and answered all my questions. I also kind of really like the fact that you get pictures of before during and after the replacement process. They use drones to do this, good use of technology in my opinion I would most certainly use this company again, And I would recommend them to anybody Thank you guys and thank you Shanco for taking such good care of me.

There was a delay, but they held to the same original price. Everyone who represented Shanco was friendly and professional. This is the second Shanco roof and I would definitely call them again, if necessary. The roof looks great!

The project manager Chad was very polite professional the guy did a great job cleaning up.

Used Shanco for a roof leak and they identified correctly immediately. Excellent customer service with knowledgeable and courteous personnel. Day of scheduled repair they reviewed every aspect of the repair with me, took pictures of the repair and completed job.

Shanco Roofing was NOT interested in wasting my time with lousy products and high pressure sales. Nick Koval, and Cristian in the Gaithersburg office makes sure things are done right the first-time. First, a Shanco professional will meet you at your home. They will get the roof inspected, will file claim for you or present retail options and payment plans. In my case, the claim was approved with their public adjuster. Finally, they replaced the roof with top quality Timberline HDZ shingles. Based on it being a full roofing system, Shanco provided a LIFETIME “workmanship warranty”, that covers everything from materials to labor and anything in between. There was no hidden language, they just did an amazing job from start to finish. I figured they must be pretty good when I saw they had been in business for 36 years, there aren’t many reputable roofing companies that have been able to stick around that long! Bottom-line, Shanco Roofing is a 5 star roofing company. Insurance roofing or retail, you will not be disappointed.

I had a very good experience with Shanco. Their estimator, Steve, came out and explained everything about getting our roof replaced. He was friendly and professional, explaining about insurance and liquidated damages. He did not need to explain about the roofing system, since I'd had a roof replaced at a previous house. There was zero hard sell, unlike several other companies I had out to give estimates. Shanco gave me the best "feeling" about all the companies who came out, and they also gave me the best price (equivalent warranty level) of all the estimates. Their scheduler, Saundra, was also very nice and kept me informed about what would be happening. I didn't really interact much with their onsite crew, but they did their jobs and it looks like they did them well. I found a couple of loose nails, but they cleaned up pretty well otherwise—maybe cleaner than before they arrived.

A tip to anyone else needing a roof replacement: NEVER hire roofers who come to your house looking for work—they're probably storm chasers, and odds are they'll give you an estimate that's 50% or more above what it should be, or even scam you out of your money. Get a few estimates from reputable local roofers, and include Shanco for one of those estimates.
