(part 1 of 2)
It is so unfortunate that Google review is the only plausible way to express all the bad experiences that my husband and I went through with the Kitchen & Design team at Hammond Lumber in Rochester, NH. We want to share our experiences to help other potential customers from making the same mistakes as us – choosing Hammond Lumber to renovate our kitchen cabinet and countertop/backsplash.
We decided to let Hammond Lumber in Rochester, NH work on replacing our kitchen cabinets and countertop/backsplash because a couple of our friends used them before with good results (but with a different team at a different location in Maine). We live in New Hampshire, so we naturally worked with the team at the Rochester location. We started the project with them on May 14, 2024. We still do not have the kitchen completed as of this moment. THAT IS EIGHT MONTHS OF NOT HAVING A KITCHEN. So far, we have been using part of the dining room to cook food and the bathroom to wash & dry the plates and utensils for our now 21-months-old baby. Even in the midst of the challenge, we fully understood the consequence and therefore have been VERY patient and reasonable. However, our patience has run dry as they have made multiple mistakes that continued to delay the completion date.
Let us start with how they made a COMPLETELY WRONG gas range cabinet even though they had all the specifications of the range prior to fabrication. Even the revised cabinet, which took 6 weeks to have it remade and delivered, did not have the right cutout, so our contractor had to make an extra trip just to cut an additional section off the cabinet (which we tried to avoid at all costs because it could weaken the cabinet but had no other plausible options) so that the countertop can flush against the range without having any food space.
They also designed a completely wrong panel. They should be embarrassed how far off the dimension and the design of the panel was from the one that we had requested. Once again, we still do not have the panels installed yet.
The appliance garage cabinet that we designed goes all the way to the top of the ceiling. Our contractor was very surprised when the cabinet was delivered that it came in one big piece. The problem was that we could not upright the cabinet because it was too tall. Our contractor had to make multiple holes in the ceiling hoping to upright it but failed. So they had to cut the base just enough to upright the cabinet and then patch up the cut. The kitchen designer with the years of experience should have known to request the cabinet in sections to avoid all of this. And we had to bear the cost to patch up and repaint the ceiling.
And the list goes on and on. There are many areas that did not come out as expected which we were not informed of, including a pair of cabinet doors sticking out from the rest of the cabinet. Pocket door that doesn’t go in all the way. Wrong cutouts for the sinks. HYSTERICAL amount of the extra charge for the backsplash that we got charged which we had to fight to have them remove it.
All the while all the extra labors that we had to pay to our contractor to correct their error could all have been avoided had they designed correctly in the first place.
And the only thing that we received from Hammond Lumber is “I am sorry.”
We had sent an email to the Hammond Lumber designer’s boss, Joe, to express our concern and to suggest if there could be any sort of compensation for going through such inconvenience which we believe is reasonable for us to ask. Sadly, he still has not replied to our email, and we realized today that he may have done so on purpose.
(part 2 of 2)
We knew that we won’t have any chance to get any possible compensation before we pay the final payment for the countertop today. So we called our kitchen designer this morning and asked her if Joe had gotten our email and if he could speak with us before we made the final payment. Our kitchen designer kept dodging Joe’s availability until the last minute before we had to make the payment to avoid the rescheduling and an apparent rescheduling fee. We expressed that we do not want to pay before we have a chance to speak with him and she simply said, “I have spoken with Joe. He is aware of your request” and when we asked her what that meant, she simply said that he will not give any discount.
The only reason for us to maintain our manners despite all this nonsense was because the kitchen designer is at least kindhearted and she is just an employee of the Hammond Lumber. But we have to point out the fact that the designer’s failure to get accurate measurements and provide correct information to the cabinet company has cost us so much of our invaluable time and the additional cost to correct the errors.
And the way Joe has been avoiding us is laughable. We really wonder how he is able to maintain his position as a manager with such lack of professionalism and accountability. He had plenty of time to reply to our email or call us and explain any possible reasons why he can’t compensate us. We would not have liked the answer but we would have understood that it is what it is and move on because we are desperate to complete the project. But instead, he chose to dodge us, hide behind the scene, and only to tell us through his designer that he is “aware of our request” without any other remarks. Wow…!!!
We love how he finally called and left a voice message after we had no option but to complete the payment. Once again, the timing of his execution is unsurprising and comical. There is no more reason for us to call back nor do we have any desire to communicate with Hammond Lumber unless we absolutely have to for any defects that we find in the future.
Maybe we were unlucky. Maybe many of their customers did not go through the level of inconvenience that we experienced. At the same time, we firmly believe that clear communication, transparency, and accountability during unexpected circumstances is what separates a good business from a bad business. The way they handled the situation did not ease our trouble at all. They were absolutely unprofessional and unsympathetic. Maybe to their view, we are simply one of the customers that they no longer have to deal with and can brush us off once we make the payment. And they may be right. But we sincerely ask those who read this who are interested in renovating their house to explore all the available companies and weigh all the possible scenarios before making a decision which company to work with and hopefully you can avoid having any stress and regrets that we went through. As for Hammond Lumber at Rocherster, NH location, we definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND their service.
Don Betz , who works at the Rochester location, waited on me this afternoon in their showroom and earned his 5 stars being such a help. He was polite and worked very hard finding the part I needed for my window screen. High fives Don!
