The Breathable Home

Drew and his team at the Breathable Home are a breath of fresh air in the very tricky business of winterizing old Maine homes in a sustainable fashion. We have had extensive dealings with a half-a-dozen companies in this line of business and The Breathable Home is the only one that takes a comprehensive view without charging a fortune. My wife and I were almost forced to sell a home we purchased in Maine at a loss because the costs of adding the sustainable heating source we wanted -- mini split heat pumps -- was so prohibitive. We were at our wit's end. The Breathable Home has given us an extensive retrofit that has turned a drafty, frozen-piped summer home to an air-tight, fully electric heated, cozy year-round cottage -- all for a 4-figure net cost. Drew initially came to look at insulating walls and was very flexible and imaginative on this task. We didn't want to pull down any walls or be left with a patchwork of holes. We had had a lot of trouble working out the best kind of insulation to use and how to get it behind walls. Thanks to Drew and his team's problem-solving approach, we ended up insulating two living spaces, almost without any drywall complications. Drew did not push his company's heat-pump services until he realized that we could be eligible for a huge state rebate. He guided us through the complex process of getting preapproval, and made sure we had our electrician plan in place. A couple of months later and we have gone from a three-headed heat pump system to a six-headed system that gets heat to every corner of the three-story building. So happy right now.

We are the proud owners of a new Mitsubishi Heat Pump system. Bo, Nadine and their entire team were absolutely outstanding from start to finish. The installation process could not have been more perfect - and the level of professionalism and value are second to none!! I simply can't recommend them highly enough.

I have already had 3 projects done this company. They do great work and feel as though they are competitively priced. The first 3 projects had pretty open ended timelines, so it worked out well.

A few years back I had them spray foam the rim joist and they did an energy audit.

Last year they spray foamed my roof, then later in the year installed a heat pump.

This year I working on a 4th project with them. This is an addition, and the timeline has relied on other subcontractors, unfortunately nothing has gone to the timeline. Bo and Nadine were able to move me up from an original date, after some early misunderstandings, but with other contractors falling behind because a road commissioner decided to not open up their roads until 3 weeks after all of the surrounding towns, the project is well off schedule.

Even if they cannot fit me into their busy schedule during a preferred time, they do great work and I am sure they will do what they can on rescheduling.

I worked with The Breathable Home to seal & add more insulation to my attic, and to have a mini-split heat pump installed. They also handled submitting the required paperwork to efficiency Maine for various rebates.

They did everything for the heat pump installation, including electrical work. The workmanship was very high quality, both the indoor and outdoor unit look outstanding. The unit works great as well, I've significantly reduced my oil usage with just one indoor unit, and I was mostly just buying the heat pump for AC in the summer. The installation crew also did a great job cleaning up afterwards, there was no trace that they were ever there!

The work to my attic was equally as good as the heat pump installation. They fixed a few things that had worn out up there and sealed all the air gaps on the first day. The second day they blew in more insulation and replaced my attic hatch with one that sealed better. Workmanship was very good, and they did an excellent job cleaning all the stray cellulose insulation that gets everywhere. The insulation made a massive difference in the temperature of my house, and the air sealing made it far less drafty. I would highly recommend having your attic looked at if your house is losing a lot of heat or is drafty.

Overall The Breathable Home did an excellent job and I highly recommend them. I will certainly be going back if I decide to add more heat pumps down the line.

Love the breathable home! They’ve now insulated our attic (in 2020) and our basement (in 2022). And, they addressed the drainage issues in our basement. They’ve been excellent to work with! We plan to have them insulate and address some moisture issues in our commercial creamery as well.

Breathable Home was great to work with when they installed two mini-split systems for us. From the quote to the install they were very professional. The install staff were helpful in talking through how the units worked. They were even helpful with a small change on our install date, due to a conflict that we had. They are super busy, so get on their calendar now!

I met many different employees from this company, from the guy that came out to conduct the original Weatherization Audit, to guys that came out to install a heat pump, and then different guys again to insulate my attic. I also exchanged numerous emails with administrative staff to answer my questions and handle payment options. Every single person was friendly, knowledgeable, and most important HONEST about what I should expect and what work they can and cannot perform. They also referred me to outside contractors for things they knew I was concerned with but that they could not handle themselves, such as work I needed on the building itself. These guys are very knowledgeable about the work they are doing, and I will definitely use them again in the future.

We love working with The Breathable Home to help make our 202 year old farmhouse more heat and energy efficient! Tom has been so helpful and very responsive every time we have contacted him with a question or concern. They performed an energy audit as well as installed spray foam in our attached garage. These folks have done a number of insulation installations for me: cellulose and spray foam. They show up on-time with no excuses. Prices are competitive and they answer the phone. Will continue to use them on future properties.

We had heat pump installation as well as a lot of work done to improve the insulation on our house. Everyone has been clear, quick and responsive!

Bo came and scoped out the crawl space above the apartments in my building, gave me an estimate and set the date for the work. His crew came shortly there after. The crawl space was cramped, perhaps three feet high. The crew cut an access hatch and had to crawl much of the distance of the building on their stomachs to get their equipment in. I thought it was a very difficult work space, but they did it with no complaints. They were very professional, cleaned up their work area, installed a hatch for access to the area if ever needed again and completed their work in much less time than I thought it would take.

They have installed heat pumps in a couple of other buildings for me with the same results. I would highly recommend The Breathable Home for a professional job that will meet your expectations and will be done at a reasonable price. This is an excellent company.

We used the Breathable Home to assess needs and improve the energy effeciency of our home. Per suggestion, we replaced an old refigerator and had our dryer refitted. We saw a dramatic drop in electricity in 1 month. They also weather sealed and insulated our home very efficiently and effectively. The Breathable Home is one of the best subs that I've used in building any home. Their prices were very competitive but the care and thought that the installers used went above and beyond anything I had a reasonable expectation of receiving. The installers were experienced, knowledgeable and personally engaging. They performed the work with precision and care (no floors or walls were harmed!) and cheerfully installed the outside unit in a very difficult location under a deck in a very limited access space. The Breathable Home came recommended to me by two friends, each of whom used them for a mini-split installation. I will be using them as my "go-to" for future builds.

We had two small projects completed by them . The first was installing a heat pump to our addition . Brandon was very professional, friendly and efficient . He completed the work in an appropriate amount of time , tested the unit and left everything in great condition , no mess to clean up.

Our second project was spray foam insulation under our cottage. Again they were we’re timely , professional and left nothing to clean up . They even called as requested when the job was complete as we weren’t there when they did the work due to the process of installation.

In February of 2018, Bo and his Breathable Home team performed a complete insulation upgrade for our 70 year-old Cape. They spray-foamed the basement walls and side attics, added blown-in cellulose in the attics and installed an air-source heat pump. These improvements greatly decreased our heating oil use and our home is more comfortable, winter and summer, than it has ever been. The Breathable Home crew was great to work with. They were very careful in their work practices and cleaned-up well as they completed each phase. Nadine also processed the Efficiency-Maine rebates as part of the service. We were completely satisfied. I would highly recommend this business for any of this work.

The initial appointment was very thorough but also sensitive to my budget. I got a couple of quotes and they were definitely well priced. Timely and sufficient communication along the way, showed up on time and completed the work early. While they were there, they were respectful and cleaned up after themselves, even finding some more ways to save money from my initial quote once they got in to do the work. From beginning to end this install was one of the best experiences I've had as a consumer. Everything was done in a professional manner. The installer(s) were on time and made sure they cleaned up after themselves during and after the work was completed. I had an appointment for an home energy assessment with them and after waiting for 2 months they called at the time of the morning appointment and said they had to change it to afternoon. I was not able to make afternoon due to a previous engagement so they cancelled the appointment.

They put me back at the end of the their long list -- even though the problem was their fault -- and, 2 months later, something else came up the day of the appointment and they were unwilling to make a phone call to try to resolve it.

My guess is they don't care much if it's a low cost appointment.

I just had the team out to fix a very difficult draft situation in our bathroom vent fan. I was so impressed with the team especially with the lead going above and beyond to try and find a solution not just a temporary fix. They also were very helpful to stay within my budget. These guys really know their stuff.
