Vander Griend sent Luis out to handle a 14' garage door my family has had trouble with since its initial installation by another garage door company. Luis quickly sized up the problems with the installation, and made highly effective repairs that turned a heavy, cumbersome to the point of near uselessness, 14' roll up door into one that any of my family members can easily operate with one hand.

I am incredibly thankful to Luis and the people of Vander Griend for helping make our shop a more useful space.

Great staff! Good variety of home building supplies. The best selection of long lengths of lumber. First choice for materials.

Outstanding Old School Lumber Yard ... truly knowledgeable, and genuinely professional. Service is the reason I go out of my way to shop here. I've been building for almost 50 years, and this is the kind of lumber yard I remember, and frankly the kind of cordial service I expect. Vander Griend Lumber Co, you all do good work, thank you for that.

This is the go to place in Whatcom County for garage doors. Troy just came out to fix my garage door. He was prompt, courteous, and friendly. He did great work in a short amount of time and left the place clean. I appreciate this kind of service in our community.

I don't know what's happened to Vander Griend Lumber but our recent window special order was and continues to be a nightmare. We had a problem with order: the windows were not made to specification of the special order requirements nor did they operate properly and were poor quality. After some pushback from the window rep we were eventually promised a full and swift refund from Vander Griend Lumber's General Manager. After 6 weeks that refund has not materialized as reality.

There are so many cracks in their business operation. Stacie, the window sales person, would not email me a receipt or PO even after several requests (a receipt is typically needed for any warranty problems in the future). No sales terms or, more importantly, special order sales terms were made available until September 20, well into the window refund dispute.

Tad Vander Griend, the owner, got involved mid-October after we escalated the situation to our credit card company. In a signed statement to our credit card company Tad wrote that I knew when I ordered there was no chance of return or refund, that nothing was wrong with the windows and that I had changed my mind on the order, and that no refund would be issued. Strangely Tad is the only person out of the 6+ people involved who thinks the windows are fine! I called and confronted Tad regarding his false statement. He said he needed to look into the matter and didn't recall any signed statements. No apology or resolution was offered.

As of today Vander Griend Lumber has the windows in their possession, still has our $2300 and now the owner has cast doubt on my good character to my credit card company. Nice.
Our credit card company will sort it out eventually but what a mistake is was ordering the windows from this company.

The front counter sales, yard and delivery people have always been knowledgable and courteous, that's why we used to shop here.

Darren from Vander Griend just left my house after repairing and servicing my garage door. He was great: completely explained what was wrong, was courteous, listened to my concerns, and was thorough in his work. Good experiences and interactions like this can make a person's day, and I appreciated that.

I also appreciated the phone call to Vander Griend in the morning and the very prompt service.

Thank you very much.

I had a shower enclosure installed in a new home and the installer said in about 6 months when the door was broken in to call to have it adjusted. I called 4 times and left messages. No call back. On the fifth call, I was transferred to the scheduler. She said someone would come out the next day between 3:00-5:00pm. No one showed up or called. I've waited 10 days and still have not received a call or email. What ever happened to customer service?

I had a great experience with Vander Griend Lumber, specifically with Chance and their garage door business. I contacted Chance to get the springs replaced on my door which had recently failed. He was able to get someone out the next day. The friendly technician Jonathan called me when he was at my house and let me know that he noticed that my door (which I had backed into 5 years ago) was damaged and suggested replacing it. I had thought about this but after just finishing a remodel last fall I wanted to hold off if possible this year and just get the springs fixed. The tech said he understood and would just fix the springs.

Well the technician did replace the springs but also put on some new hinges on the bottom door to get me through the end of the year. When my wife told him thank you and asked him to put it on the invoice he said he just wanted to make sure the door was safe for my kids and to call him next year when we were ready to replace the door. Suffice to say I will definitely be calling Chance & Jonathan when we are ready next year!

These folks are super helpful and they have really nice lumber, which is all covered so it's dry. They also have a great selection of in-stock hardware and fasteners. And I always get help loading my lumber order. I would always go here if I could.

Terrible communications and service. Asked to have someone to replace broken window. Service asked if I would be home in the late afternoon, and I said I could. Never showed, never called. Next morning I called again. They apologized and sent TWO men, who measured glass outside and inside. Said it would have to be ordered. Still no price, Almost 3 weeks have gone by, so I called again. They said they would check and call back. NOTHING!!! I live less than a mile away, and still have a broken window.

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
