TUF Storm Restoration replaced the roofs and gutters on two houses we own in
Spearfish after the June 2020 hailstorm. When they were done, the gutters on
one house did not drain properly and it took multiple discussions and
re-hangings to get the gutters to an acceptable state. The roof on the other
house appeared to be fine until over three years later, when a leak occurred
in the kitchen ceiling around one of four skylights. Upon closer inspection
by roofing professionals, there were signs of significant leaking around
three of the skylights that had caused water damage to the underlayment. The
roofing company that performed the repairs found that TUF Storm Restoration
had improperly installed the flashing around the three skylights. These
professionals noted that installing flashing correctly is not rocket science
but simply involves following well-known and established procedures. As a
precaution, we later decided to have the fourth skylight reflashed, which
was a wise decision as the flashing around the fourth skylight had also
started leaking. In 2020 we paid TUF Storm Restoration the full amount sent
to us by our insurance company. But TUF refused to give us any compensation
for the several thousand dollars we had to shell out in 2024 to repair their
shoddy workmanship., in spite of contacting TUF while repairs were still in
progress. TUF rebuffed our several requests to meet in person to discuss the
situation and absolutely refused to discuss any type of compensation for the
damages to the roof itself or the ceiling inside the house.
I regret leaving my previous job for this opportunity at Tuf Storm Restoration, as it turned out to be a complete disappointment and a personal loss of $1000’s of dollars.
The owner, whom I've known for over 30 years, convinced me to join his company despite my lack of roofing experience, relying on my sales background instead.
Unfortunately, he seemed more focused on socializing and playing pickleball than leading the company.
In my first three weeks, I managed to secure two jobs—a small gutter job and a larger metal roof project. However, the support from management was severely lacking. It took five weeks to get estimates for the roof project, which caused the client to lose interest due to the delays. I don’t blame him at all.
I left before receiving payment for the small gutter job and followed up nearly six weeks later, only to be told that the sales manager had misquoted the deal, and it didn’t qualify for commission. The owner avoided addressing the issue directly, using the inexperienced sales manager as a scapegoat multiple times.
The owner had asked me 3 or 4 times if I had been a sales manager because he wasn’t happy with the current sales manager's work ethic. After 6 weeks in, I knew I wanted nothing to do with being a sales manager at Tuf, in reality, being an operations manager. He didn’t understand the difference.
Throughout my brief time there, it became clear that the owner lacked the leadership abilities to run and scale a successful company.
When the metal roof client stopped responding to me due to the delays, I realized this was not the right fit for me. (I don't blame him)
While this was going on, there was a storm in the Piedmont area, and it was my first taste of how this all worked. After that experience, I mentioned, to the owner and sales manager, "I am not sure how we can compete with the larger companies because we are so slow on getting estimates out. No one had a response.
Side note: if you are a Christian and or a Patriot (even flying your flag) you may want your money to go elsewhere. It triggers him and his sales manager, who considers himself "Extreme Left" (actually said it to me). I saw it for myself with the owner's Christian/Marine buddy. It was hilarious
Other companies deserve your money.
Very accommodating when working with us. Kept us informed of what was going on, did the work when said they would, stayed on budget, and did a great job. Highly recommend!
