I had to sue Topside Roofing in Bellingham, WA for breach of contract. I won the lawsuit in small claims court in Whatcom County. The judgement paper states that the suit is payable in 30 days. It is now into three months and Topside has not paid this judgement against them. This is not my idea of good business practices. Topside gets no star from me.

Totally not satisfied with the cost. I called and ask to have my gutter repaired or taken down due to high winds was causing it to rattle. I was told it couldn't be repaired and needed new gutter. It was ordered and was brought out by Discount Gutters. I had no idea that Topside subcontracted anyone else to do the job. The gutter that Topside ordered did come close to matching. Discount gutters said there was no reason to replace existing gutter it only needed to be clamped. Really wanted that in the first place. Received one bill for $460.00 and after I complained they reduced it to just under $250.00. Pretty expensive for being here 15 minutes. Will I call Topside again? Absolutely Not!!!!!

I've been a general contractor in Bellingham for ten years, I have had more than thirty subcontractors work for me and I am very loyal to those that do a good job for me. Most of the subcontractors that I have hired, I would hire again and I refer friends and customers to them as I'm asked quite a bit "who would you recommend to .....?' I would not recommend Topside because of the experience that I had with them fixing a customers roof. They way overcharged me for the four hour job they did and took three months to fully complete the job, which was only a small item that took half an hour to take care of at best, but still left the house vulnerable to leaking. I got poor communication from them and weak excuses as to why it wasn't done and I was told several times over the course of those months that it would be taken care of. I'm not an overly fussy person, I normally have only good things to say about people who work for me, I just like a job to be completed. After speaking with other contractors in town about this situation, I've realized I'm not alone in my feelings about them.

Topside did a great job. Hauled off all the old roofing and cleaned out gutters too. They also cleaned up any fallen debris from the yard. They alerted us to a problem we had with some of our plywood sheets. The crew worked hard and did a great job. The roof looks wonderful. We look forward to feeling a lot safer in the winter storms now with our new roof.
I recommend this company to anyone looking to replace their roof.

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
