These guys are highly unprofessional, and I believe somewhat of a scam artist.
I found Tyler on Thumbtack and he had many good reviews and advertised a rate of $70 an hour so I reached out with several interior renovation projects. I sent detailed pictures along with measurements and specific numbered items of the work to be done. I have done this with other contractors and received a more or less accurate ballpark estimate. Only after scheduling With Tyler was I contacted that they had a $75 estimate fee. I own eight investment properties and I have worked with over 100 contractors, electricians, plumbers handyman, etc. and never once have I been asked to provide any fee for a renovation project. Plumbers or HVAC have a service call but never a contractor.
Nonetheless David (his partner) showed up and he had no idea why he was there had not seen any of the job descriptions before. I showed him everything on the computer that I sent through and he said this is amazing; everything that we actually need is here. He did not take any pictures of the job site. in fact, only took pictures of my computer screen showing the work to be done. Tyler had initially given me a estimate of $6000 to $7000 which was on par with some other estimates I already received. I was very clear with both David and the customer service rep that answers the emails that I only wanted labor cost. I have all the materials on hand and everything would be provided. Nonetheless, a detailed estimate came through including all kinds of components that were not needed. And what was shocking is all the rate was at $138 an hour! His initial estimate went from six to $7000-$17,000!! That was very clear. I only wanted a labor estimate, and all kinds of additional materials were put on there and additionally increased the price dramatically. Contacted the customer service rep through thumbtack who said we’ve received the estimate that we were given and they would not be modifying it. If there’s anything we did not like we would just simply subtract it from the estimate. Again, this is the only time I’ve ever paid for an estimate in my life.!!
When I called Tyler to simply express my concern and frustration I was met with rudeness, arrogance and I did not even get to finish one sentence without him continuously to interrupt me. David then gets on the phone and apologize for the inaccurate estimates and said he would send a revised estimate by end of day. I never received any further estimates. What was ridiculous is they take me for a fool. For one of the jobs they quoted to hang drywall by the square inch, mud and tape it and then finish it, so essentially everything was gone, and there was another seven hours work for “drywall” that was then only to be covered with a façade brick in which nothing has to be finished underneath this work (it was an electric fireplace) They completely charged me for the hanging and taping the drywall and then had an additional drywall charge of SEVEN more hours! . On top of this they, did every single action to frame and finish this project included a full charge for hanging the façade brick everything was included and then they throw on 30 hours MORE of miscellaneous work! As well as six hours of painting! Nothing needed to be painted. When I question as they said there was probably more work they had to do as well as if they make damages to the wall they will have to paint it repaired. His initial estimate went from six to $7000-$17,000.
Considering I was paying for the estimate when David arrived, I had quite a few more projects for them to quote on what he said he would do, including removing trees, doing some outdoor hard escaping and wiring new electrical circuits. None of this was included in the estimate!
There was also a charge totaling over FIVE hours to simply remove to medicine cabinets off the wall and to rehang them. This job entails taking the medicines off the wall, unscrewing four screws, screwing four screws back in and hanging the medicine cabinets.
I have used TCH several times and each time I was very happy with the service they provided. Their people are friendly and easy to work with. I noticed several times that they took professional pride in getting things right. I have no doubt that I will use them again.
Super friendly and professional. Very reasonably priced. Fixed a confusing electrical problem for me and was very fast and took the time to explain what and why the were doing things. Definitely recommend!
