We have been using Saunders Roofing at our three homes over the last 30 years - most recently over the last few weeks. Kaleb, Tyrone, and Tony worked in extreme heat and managed to still do great work at a high level of professionalism and energy. Thanks to that great group of men and to Ricky who helped us get on the schedule when we desperately needed them - even though they were swamped. We wouldn't use anyone else.

Saw a Saunders truck at his house...He didn't mind at all. He took me and sold me rubber roofing as I was in a bad way. If everyone else is like that guy ...5 Stars !!!!

Saunders Roofing Company is our Roofing Company of Choice. They re-roofed our 1930 Spanish tile home in the city carefully by hand. After twenty years, We contracted Saunders again to re-roof all of our commercial property in RVA. We are happy and satisfied with their quality of work and service. I had an extremely poor experience with Saunders Roofing. We were quoted around $6,000 to repair some roof damage and install TPO. Later, we received a different value in the mail, which was a couple of thousand dollars less. We were pleased, but then received an email stating there was a mix-up, and the original $6,000 quote was correct. While mistakes happen, this was the first red flag.

After paying our deposit, we experienced complete radio silence. While on vacation, we noticed on our cameras that work had begun on our roof. We were never informed that they would be starting, which was concerning.

When it came time for the TPO installation, they started repairing the underlying wood (more on this later) which I had assumed was in the original quote.

They then discovered structural issues with the brick and iron work which they made us aware of with a sense of urgency (but again as never quoted, despite being completely visible). They had already laid the TPO, leaving minimal room for the necessary repairs. Those repairs, which were never really outlined in the original quote as a possibility cost us an additional $7,000 (not to them, but to the masons & iron guy).

We scheduled our mason to finish the work on a Monday and meet with their team, but Saunders Roofing’s team no-showed. Our mason waited all day and Saunders later explained that they didn’t work due to potential rain, but failed to inform us in advance.

After returning home from travel, I saw the finished product and was extremely disappointed with the quality. It looked terrible, but I was too exhausted to invest more energy into this project.

We received an unexpected invoice for another $3,000. When I called Mike for clarification, he directed me to the contract to a clause about $110/man-hour and a 20% markup on materials and told me to speak with the owner, and that this was ultimately a failure of their estimator (who he repeatedly reminded me was let go). Attempts to reach the owner resulted in a suggestion to leave a message, which felt dismissive and still haven't heard anything back (~2 months later).

The project ended up costing close to triple the original quoted amount. Outside of this, personally I think it looks terrible and not indicative of a ~15k job and it still collects water in the corner (of which I flagged early on), so I assume this will likely fail prematurely.

The lack of communication, surprise costs, and poor quality of work have left us deeply unsatisfied. I cannot recommend Saunders Roofing to anyone based on our experience.

I have a house in the city with the typical slate roof you see throughout Richmond. When I purchased the home 17 years ago my neighbor recommended, if not insisted I use Saunders Roofing if I wanted the work done right. I have stuck to this advice, but not before going through a few other companies that claim they know how to work on slate. My frugalness, which drove me to try other companies, always came back to haunt me as none were as good; technically, customer service or even customer interactions. I always say of these old homes, "We describe ourselves as home owners, but really we are custodians of the homes for future generations". That said, I have accepted those "data points" which point to Saunders as the only company I will entrust to work on my slate roof. Although, anyone can handle most residential asphalt shingle roofing jobs/repair. You truly need a craftsman with years of experience to effectively work on these old, and often historic, homes. Saunders is not about cost but about delivering quality, long lasting results. You will not be disappointed with the workmanship and Saunders stands behind their work. I enthusiastically recommend Saunders Roofing ( Lead Craftsman Reggie) for any work you want done well on your slate or other roofing project.

Saunders Roofing sent the team of Reggie Bush and Tyrone Williams to completely rehab the roof of my classic arts and crafts bungalow in Bellevue. That stamped tin roof, incidentally, was installed 101 years ago. Reggie and Tyrone did a masterful restoration job. After meticulously scraping and wirebrushing every inch of the roof, they secured each and every panel with stainless steel screws, applied sealants, and then recoated the entire roof. It appears as it was more than a century ago. Can't thank them enough, and they were consummate professionals every step of the way.

Once the glitch in scheduling my job was resolved, things went smoothly. Reggie and his crew were incredibly cheerful on a very cold day for outside work. He communicated well, keeping me informed of the issues and steps they were taking to make repairs.
As always with a roof leak, now we will hope that the problem is fixed when we experience a few heavy rains.
Kudos to Saunders for retaining employees with many years of experience.

I used Saunders several years ago for replacement of copper in my slate roof. The work was great so when I needed slate repair again recently, I called Saunders. They scheduled me quickly and showed up on time. The two techs that showed up to do the work, Reggie and Duane, were professional and really put effort into their work and made sure I was satisfied with the job. They worked hard and did spend time doing the job right rather than rushing through the work trying to save time to make another "buck" on another job and I really appreciate that. To potential customers: Do yourself a favor, if you need slate roof repair, call Saunders. I think you will be very satisfied with the work and service. To Reggie & Duane, thanks for getting my job done and doing "old school" customer service. Much appreciated.

The Saunder's lead repair person, Reggie W., and team do superb work. Saunders have been providing roofing maintenance on our slate and metal roofing for the past 35 years. Their work is always professional and thorough. They are a top-notch company.

Saunders Roofing has been an amazing company to work with in every respect. They were hired to put on a new slate roof onto an addition; repair old cracked slate on existing house; install snow/ice guards; copper installation over windows; replace flashing, and replace broken gutters/downspouts. There wasn’t an employee that didn’t impress me. From the start, Rick and Jake were patient in explaining every step necessary in this process. On the job site, Derek and his crew set a new high standard for all workers. Derek was always thinking of ways to improve the process or make a situation better. For example, he noticed that a drip edge should be installed to ensure the rainwater fell directly into the gutter and not behind it. I truly appreciated his ‘proactive’ approach. I won’t hesitate to hire Saunders Roofing again, as I encourage you to do the same.

Paul Saunders Roofing has been taking care of our vintage tin roof for 20+ years and they have always done an excellent job. This time they sent out Reggie Bush and his team to clean, paint, & patch our roof and install new gutters. Reggie and his team have done an outstanding job, even working in crazy hot conditions on a tin roof! Reggie has been on time, professional, and reassuring and has gone out of his way to be sure we were happy with the work every step of the way. Saunders did great work on a flat-roof issue, and on adding a downspout cleanup and modification. The star of the show was Reggie Bush. He did an awesome job, making sure it was done right and with a great positive spirit.

I needed help at Home Depot 2 nights ago. I noticed that a man ,whose name is Reggie Bush, was wearing a shirt from Saunders Roofing. I asked him for help and he spent nearly 15 minutes explaining things to me. He took me to the exact pieces I needed and also showed me photos of recent roofs where he had done the exact application that I was trying to do. REGGIE WAS a super kind and professional person. If I was needing a great employee I would definitely seek this person out and hire him away .

We had a problem with a leaking attic vent that stumped a few folks, but Reggie & Jonathan were able to cure the problem professionally! Rather than attempting to repair the existing vent (and us spending yet another week monitoring for leaks and catching the drops), they determined the vent itself was at fault and leaking which is apparently quite rare. They communicated with me what the problem was and proposed solution then installed a new vent appropriate to the attic we have. Boom, leak gone! Thanks so much for curing our leak!

Saunders Roofing recently replaced the roof on my Museum District home with TPO. They did an excellent job of the replacement, but also planned on addressing the flow of water off the roof. Previously during hard rains, I had a leak where the water exits the roof to my gutter system. Joe and Eddie were assigned to the task and did an amazing job approaching a very challenging problem. Upon closer inspection they needed to deviate from the plan and developed a solution on the spot that demonstrated their knowledge, experience, and craftsmanship. Their communication and attention to detail were excellent and I felt like a partner in the process. Of course, the value I added was questionable, but they included me anyway. I really appreciated that kind of customer service. Thanks Joe and Eddie!

I've used Paul Saunders Roofing on multiple occasions over the last couple of years at the Movie Theater I manage in Richmond. Every repair I've had done was an excellent experience. Here is a list of reasons I continue to use them.

Jarrod is especially exceptional and a real asset to the company. He goes above and beyond to identify the cause of the leak and the best course of action to fix the leak while keeping keeping the repairs reasonably priced.
I also had a couple of non roof emergencies come up and I reached out to a couple of vendors I use regularly. Jarrod was able to put me in touch with someone on short notice that was able to help me on a time sensitive situation. You can tell he values you as a customer.

I have used Saunders twice and both times they were great. The technicians were very friendly and knowledgeable and took the time to explain to me what was going on, what to expect, and how they would address the issues. I highly recommend them and I will use them again if I have a need.

My hat's off to foreman Will Massie of Saunder's Roofing and crew who rescued our slate roof from a very botched job.

Saunder's Roofing was hired to tear off our slate, replace rotten decking, replace our dormer valleys, chimney flashing and dormer window sill aprons with new copper, reseal our gutters with elastomeric, lay ice & water shield underlayment membrane and reinstall the slate on our heritage house in Woodland Heights neighborhood of Richmond. After various and serious issues came to surface from the first crew that was sent to do the job, Saunder's project managers Joe Rogo and Ricky Smith as well as Saunder's owner got involved. A new crew was sent out the following day to make corrections lead by foreman Will Massie.

Mr. Massie and his crew came in like the cavalry, tearing off the botched work, making necessary corrections while executing the upmost levels of professionalism. They worked steadily and as expected daily. They were never late to the site in the morning or coming back from lunch in the afternoon and they stayed working steadily until the end of the day never leaving early. Will and crew corrected all issues from the former crew, kept the site clean, executed the job Saunder's was contracted to do and addressed all follow up concerns with perfection.

I have worked with many roofers in the Richmond area since purchasing a century old home but I have never been more impressed by a roofer and roofing company than I have been with foreman Will Massie and team from Saunder's Roofing. My only regret is not hiring them sooner.

In February 2017 we requested that Saunders Roofing inspect our roof and submit a proposal to do any necessary work. They recommended replacing a few broken or cracked slates and resealing the roof. We got estimates from several other respected roofing contractors and chose Saunders to do the work because their estimate seemed both fair and competitive. We are in the process of selling our home and the buyers' roof inspector was amazed to see that a house built in 1951 had no damaged slate. The inspection did identify one very small section of roof ridge that needed to be resealed. When I contacted Saunders Roofing, the owner immediately sent his roofers to do the repair, allowing me to meet my deadlines. I feel that this company has provided exemplary service.

Saunders Roofing is the only roofing company you need. I have used them on several occasions to have roofs inspected for real estate transactions. They have an extremely knowledgable and patient staff that took the time to answer all of my clients questions and are very accommodating with our inspection deadlines. I have even recommended Saunders roofing to few colleagues that have found them equally impressive. I strongly recommend Saunders Roofing to anyone in need from roof repairs to a completely new roof. They are worth a lot more than 5 stars!

Just had our roof replaced by Saunders Roofing. We have flat roof with a rubber liner that many Fan houses have. They did an excellent job. The work crew was nice and they did a good job cleaning up. Would hire them again, but hopefully will not need to, at least for a long time.

After gaining experience with Saunders in a business situation, I turned to this company when it came time to replace a 26 year-old roof at home. I was a bit persnickety about the look I wanted, and Maurice Franck took the time to research options and recommended a newer, thicker asphalt product that creates the illusion of a characterful cottage roof from an earlier time — exactly what I was after. The crew was neat on site and I've had no issues since the project was done a year and one-half ago.

Buyers of our home hired Saunders (family related deal) for the roof assessment and Saunders did an estimate of repairs at 20K - stating the "active roof leaks, cracks and a condition of the roof". We have been in the house for three years and roof was installed 10 years ago and every year - before the fall - we have a roofer come in to inspect it. After we got lowballed, we refused to listen to the crazy estimate and we got two roofers in. There is nothing wrong with it, no active leaks, nothing. Since, we sold a house, as buyers hired local and registered roofer. But, Saunders scam estimate did make it time-costly and since one has to disclose the inspection - it was just a very avoidable issue. We would never hire them as we now have a reason to believe they lie, they scam people and one is possibly paying for things that need not work.

We have several issues issues with our slate roof. We received an estimate and it was more than we wanted to pay. HOWEVER, I asked what needed to be done immediately and what could wait and they went line by line with each item, so that I could make an informed choice. I had them complete the most critical and will have them back as we can afford it for the other items. Our house is a 1935 home with a slate roof, so the issues came with the house and are not under insurance. They were professional and took care of everything exactly as they said they would. They cam recommended to me from a friend who works at Lowes and knows them by reputation.

** Update: After hiring an engineer to diagnose the problem, the problem is that Saunders completely screwed up my built-in gutter, pitching it toward the house in such a way that it created a spout to direct the entire run-off from my roof against the brick wall of my house. Since brick is porous, he water all ended up INSIDE my house, running down my walls.

They already knew that hey had screwed up my gutter since, in a hard enough rain, the water would over-shoot this Spout and hit my neighbor's house like a fire hose (not exaggerating). This is not a problem I had before they rebuilt the gutter.

Saunders still completely refuses to take any responsibility. I paid another company to fix the gutter and further waterproof my roof parapets, all with $$ out of my own pocket. Everything now works great.

Bottom line is:

Saunders screws up jobs, then lies about problems and ultimately completely refuses to fix its own mistakes. You are warned. **

I hired them last year to install a new TPO roof, including replacing rotten wood on the roof decking and integral gutter. After calling them back several times last year due to obvious problems, I have just discovered a doozy of a hidden problem: the roof has been leaking *badly* into my walls for the past year. Looking at the roof over the leak, there are a million seams in the TPO, so of course it is leaking. Water is running down the inside of my walls, and the mold is growing so thick on the brick itself that it is making us sick even after tearing out all of the drywall and insulation. This company did such a bad job that even with numerous call-backs, they didn't even discover that their roof can't shed water. I don't know if this job is fixable without tearing out a bunch of the old work and completely re-doing it, it is that bad. Do yourself a favor and find someone else for roof work. Or just buy a tarp.

UPDATE: Saunders, like they did with every other screw up on this job, refuses to take any responsibility for their bad work. Their warranty isn't worth a thing.

I was so impressed with these guys… Great service delivery and they did everything I requested. It's so refreshing to have home repair folks that come when they say they will come and do things the right way! Really nice guys… I highly recommend!

They were prompt with getting me a quote on fixing a leak, tarring the ridge of my slate roof, installing new snow stops, and adding a new gutter system. Price was very competitive, and they were able to get me on their schedule quickly. The workers were awesome--- friendly, clean, and professional. I have a ton of landscaping in the way, and they took the time to sidestep all of my fussy planting despite all of the roof work needed. We've had a lot of rain this past week, and everything is working wonderfully! No leaks!
