My experience with this rental agency was disappointing due to several issues. First, showings of our property occurred at least once a week for the five months we lived there, often at inconvenient times, including weekends and as early as 8 a.m. These frequently scheduled showings disrupted our privacy, especially since we were often woken up or had strangers entering our space while we were not home. In most cases, it wasn’t even the landlord or leasing agent conducting the tours but other individuals we did not know who rarely introduced themselves to us. Often times, they disrespected our space by wearing their shoes throughout the apartment or asking us tenants questions about the property- questions that should've been answered by the agency. We were never offered any compensation, rent discounts, or even an acknowledgment of thanks for accommodating this inconvenience.
Additionally, they deducted almost $200 from our security deposit to replace a garage door opener they claimed we lost. However, we were never provided with one in the first place. Had they informed us earlier that a garage door remote was missing, we could have replaced it ourselves with a universal remote for 1/10th of the cost. This charge was excessively high, impacting us students negatively. This likely occurred because we were required to fill out the move-in sheet (where damages and keys are noted) within the same hour we moved in. We were rushed and pressured to fill it out as the person who gave us the keys was waiting in the apartment for us to finish. Therefore, I'd encourage PSA to give tenants a week to review the move-in sheet before asking for them to turn it in like other agencies do. And to those moving in, I'd encourage you to thoroughly inspect the move in sheet and make sure that everything is documented correctly, even if you are rushed when filling it out.
Aside from these issues, there were good things about PSA. Since they were selling the property we moved in to, they were able to accommodate our need for a short-term lease of 5 months. Most places in Ames would not have done this without an additional fee, so we appreciated this.
Unfortunately, there are many rental agencies in Ames that take advantage of students, and it's unclear if this one is an exception. I encourage other students to carefully research their options and choose an agency that values fairness and respect for tenants.
Poverty Service Agency in Ames is really not a great management company to rely on. They are very poor with management service. As a resident I get no service and they take days for maintenance . Chris has a really bad attitude and is always rude whenever contacted. Would not choose their properties.
We have used PSA for varied projects inside & outside our home and have been very pleased with their work and reasonable pricing.
