Steve Pompei, who has a good reputation as a contractor, quoted me $100 000.00 to replace my kitchen cabinets while 2 other companies quoted $45 000.00 (I have a small kitchen). We live in a time when a lot of us have become vulnerable to the greed of society, especially in the construction world. Here, in Santa Fe, the wealthy Californians who have migrated to New Mexico, are paying "surcharges" to become clients or be placed on top of the lists as they are waiting for their renovations or building projects. The rest of us face having to pay these "surcharges" or not make the lists. We may also find ourselves bumped from the lists after a long wait period. Yes, a person may charge whatever they choose, there is nothing unlawful about this, but I would qualify this to be unethical. This way of doing business has been adopted by the large companies in the country who, last year, have made the biggest profits in decades. Shall we ask the question: is it ok to do something just because you can? We are having to function with an inflation which is, in large part, created by greed rather than by the consequences of the pandemic. Disheartening
