Penfolds Roofing & Solar

Penfolds were total pros replacing the roof on our weird little house, that is also situated on a difficult lot. Not an easy or straightforward job, yet they handled it like pros and just found solutions when needed.

Everything from getting an estimate through the job was easy, and where I would say they really shine outside of the actual roofing work (which can be rare unfortunately) is in communication, which I truly appreciate.

Would fully recommend!

I had a new roof installed at my house in West Van last summer. The crew at Penfolds were absolutely first class in every way. Top quality work throughout the project and all messes were cleaned up well at the end of each day. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and I’m delighted with the results.

We were very happy with the customer service and product from penfolds. We got an eco-roof and solar panels install in sea to sky area. Both the roof and panels have exceeded our expectations so far. We went with penfolds due to their reputation and quality workmanship. For anyone that appreciates the same, Penfolds is the best option out there.

Foreman Jessie and his crew Remy and Milan did an excellent job and super efficient! They were hard working, organized, kept things neat and tidy and did a terrific final clean up.

We live 10 minutes off a major road in North Vancouver. Saw lots of good reviews online for Penfolds with lots of happy customers. Phoned the number on the website and was connected to what I believe to be a call center. Gave all the details on our location, type of roof, etc. and was told a rep would call me back in 2-3 business days. Norm from the North Vancouver location called as expected and we set up an appointment to provide an onsite repair or replace quote with address confirmed and appointment set for next day. I needed to juggle my schedule to make the appointment time work, but wanted move quickly.

Received a call *5mins after the scheduled meeting time to tell me its difficult to get crews to come to our location and he would not be quoting any work. I understand that a number of businesses may be having staffing shortages or need to soften employee expectations to improve retention, but were talking about a small flat roof in the district of North Vancouver.

Setting the staffing issue aside, the key reason I'm writing this review is the lack of professionalism. Penfolds had 2 opportunities to turn this job down and not book the appointment. They waited until after the established meeting time to tell me they weren't coming. That should be a red flag for any prospective customer.

It's fine that Penfolds doesn't want the work, someone will. But, word of caution to prospective customers - aside from cost, timing, scheduling, crew availability and professionalism should all be things to watch for.

Penfolds replaced our asphalt roof, two vented skylights, and gutters/downspouts. They also demolished our deteriorating chimney. The quality of the finished work looks great, and all workers on-site were polite and respectful of our property. The job site was left in an orderly state each day and our home was well protected from weather during construction.

Between signing our agreement and the start of work, our project was transferred from our initial contact, Martin, to a new supervisor, Chris. Chris was great! He was incredibly communicative and was always willing to answer questions or provide guidance when we hadn’t heard from our project coordinator.

Throughout the project, some things that came up that we didn’t anticipate (see below). It’s important to note that we are first-time homeowners, so it’s possible that these are normal things to expect/questions we didn't know to ask in advance. Perhaps it will be helpful to others as well.

- After an initial visit from Penfolds, we accepted their quote. This was followed by a more detailed inspection from them (still before any construction began) that led to a 40% increase in cost due to some unique (though justifiable) challenges with our roof that weren’t noticed in the initial visit.

- We noticed our chimney demolition wasn’t explicitly stated in the contract we received. After inquiring via email, we were reassured that it was in the “internal scope” of the work. We learned on day 1 of construction that this hadn’t been shared with the new supervisor, as he had no knowledge of the chimney demolition. Our original email exchange ended up being the sole proof that this was part of our agreement, which Penfolds honoured, and Chris was able to quickly reorganize things to ensure it was done without added delay.

- We had to be very, very, proactive in our communication to get updates about our project. We received an initial introduction message from the project coordinator, heard very little for a couple of months, then one afternoon received an email letting us know that our job was scheduled to start the following day. We had to call to find out if/when interior access was required, which days the crew would be on site, for how long, and when they would return following delays due to weather/supply issues. We also had to follow up multiple times about removal of waste/leftover supplies and final inspection.

- The disposal bin for the job was left unsecured throughout the 2 weeks it was on site, and this was taken advantage of by some illegal dumpers.

- We originally thought all elements of the job would be completed within the given time estimate, but later learned that the gutters/downspouts would be installed a couple of weeks after the roofing. Leftover materials and waste also took a few weeks to be collected, and final inspection happened ~2 months after our start date.

All in all, our experience with Penfolds was positive. The information above simply outlines details we didn’t know to expect/clarify as first-time homeowners and may apply with any company. We are very happy with our new roof, skylights, and gutters.

Penfolds was recommended by a close friend and they exceeded our expectations in every way. Jason was professional from the get go providing a comprehensive quote and inviting us to the showroom to run over the details with us. Once signed, Penfolds was very professional setting up a start date and clearly communicating the timeline and providing ample notice to the tenant. They replaced our old roof with a metal one and arranged for a certified carpenter to repair the roof where needed. When the project ran into friction with the tenant, Jason and team went above and beyond to accommodate and did everything in his power to help the tenant and to help us throughout the roof installation. With Penfolds you're getting more than just a great new roof. You're getting peace of mind and quality service. Like my friend who recommended them to me, I'd recommend them in a heartbeat.

From start to finish a quality outfit with great communication, professional staff and great service. Solar permitting took a bit longer than expected but at the end quite happy with install. Hamish is great at handholding clients through the entire process.

Professional company to work with. Returned emails and phone calls in a timely manner. Crew on site was polite and respectful. Used for metal roof and temporary tarping on residential house.

Based upon a neighbour’s experience I called Penfolds for a consultation. Hamish attended and discussed options for replacing the roof. He explained the advantages and disadvantages of different surfaces. As we live in a forest interface area and have had fires nearby we wanted to reduce fire risk and opted for a metal roof and replacing of our skylights. Hamish showed us our options suggesting snow guards to restrain snow slipping from the roof and provided a quote within days.

Once we approved the quote we experienced some Covid & weather related delays but were slotted in as soon as a dry window was in the forecast. Our crew, led by JoJo, introduced themselves and advised us of what they were doing, in what order & why. They kept the site clean and obviously knew their business. Despite our lot being challenging ( steep slope and lack of easy access ) they managed smoothly avoiding any damage to many plants around the home.

When they were uncertain as to whether the skylight seal was perfect they redid the entire interface explaining they didn’t want any problems.

Despite some rainfall they kept the site protected with tarps. When a portion of the roof had some damaged strapping they photographed the area and repaired it. Hamish later confirmed the repairs and got authorization for a modest surcharge for this unanticipated work.

Our experience was exceptional ... and We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this team. 5 star performance

Super service! Thank you Gabor & David for your thorough follow-up inspection of our asphalt roof shingles which Penfolds replaced 12 years ago. Sure appreciate you replacing 4 sun-eroded vent seals as a preventative measure (there were no leaks). All at no cost to us!

Penfolds installed a new roof on our house after we noticed a leak during a storm. They were able to provide a quote to replace very quickly, which was competitive and complete. Project took only two days, crew was professional and left the site very clean. Roof looks great, and much cooler in the summer now with the new ventilation they installed. Appreciate the peace of mind that comes with the 40 year warranty backed by a solid, longstanding North Vancouver company. Highly recommend!

Our experience with Penfolds was less that satisfactory, to say the least. The company was inefficient from booking the appointment, completing the job in a timely manner, and with cleaning up after the job. The communication with the company to arrange the dates required MANY follow ups on our part and last minute rescheduling on their end. When it came time to do the job, the dates got switched and extended twice, from what we were originally told (having the job FINALLY done after a 6 day span when we were told it would be done in two consecutive days). Additionally, the clean up after the job was VERY poor. There were roofing nails left in the grass, on the deck, and on the driveway (causing the need for two tire patches in our vehicle). Additionally, our deck was so covered in debris that we needed to do a better cleaning job before we could even walk out there, and there we chunks of old roofing material and garbage (including from the installer's lunch!) in the yard. I would NOT recommend this company.

Solar panels installed - The Penfolds family have right from the beginning starting with the in home quote, installation, final approval and after completion service have been exceptional. Everyone was very friendly and having the install during Covid-19; the installers and electricians kept there face mask on and took their shoes off when they had to come in the house. Hats off to the crew.

Roof needed replacing. Work was contracted but got delayed due to initial COVID-19 lockdown. However, Penfolds was able to start and complete the job in a safe and timely manner. Great job! And many thanks to the whole team from the sales associate, site manager, office person and the two brave individuals who did the replacement. Apologies as I do not remember their names.

Great company. Mariya (the scheduler/coordinator) is excellent and helpful, even after the roof was complete. I researched quite a few different companies before settling on Penfolds and for the quality & roof type, they were the best value. The crews - I dealt with 2 - were also excellent. Tidy, friendly, leaving no mess behind after each departure.

Both JASON and JayAr displayed courtesy and professionalism during the entire process. Penfolds Roofing are blessed to have such employees. I continually refer them to any friends looking to replace their roof.

Excellent service from Penfolds - this is our second roof from their company and we have been extremely happy with both experiences (the other was 23 years ago!). The crew was polite, hard-working and cleaned up the job-site at the end of every day. We highly recommend Penfolds.

Penfolds is an well operated company. The installation of my 46 solar panels was very well done. I've lived in my new house for 13 months now and with the exception of a very small hydro bill in January, I don't get a Hydro charge. The panels run my house and charge my all electric car. I love it , no fuel bills for my car and at the end of my BC Hydro one year period I received a cheque from them for the excess power my panels produced during the longer spring, summer and even fall days.
In my opinion, Penfolds Solar panels are A GREAT INVESTMENT !

Penfolds has a great reputation and now I know why. The salesman was professional when giving the quote and covering everything. The crew showed up as expected, kept our driveway clean and completed the project as scheduled. I'm happy to refer them to others in need of a roof.

Our project was done faster than expected, better than expected and for the agreed upon price. I cannot say enough about the entire crew/team and experience dealing with Penfolds from Shaun to the project guys to the crew. We have a tough location, challenging yard/rocks and everything was perfect. Thank You!!!

The end to end process from sales through to installation and payment far exceeded my expectations.It was a good experience and we were more than happy with all of the positive comments from our neighbours.

We had a horrible experience with Penfolds. They were extremely quick to provide a quote and arrange a start date but unfortunately the project took much longer than quoted, the final bill was nearly double the quotation and there was nails left all over the property. The standard over promise and under deliver.

They get the work done, but if your looking for an honest company, keep looking.

This company disconnected the B vent from our furnace when they re did the roof. I contacted them after the roof was done to express concern about extra heat in one of our walls. They told me it was nothing and everything was ok. My grandmother was living in the home and was slowly being poisoned with carbon monoxide from the furnace venting into the house. We all felt ill frequently in the house. A few years later we have done a renovation and my contractor discovered the disconnected b vent. When I contacted the company the manager for North Vancouver yelled at me and hung up the phone. No apology. No offer of compensation. No admittance that it may have been their fault. Unacceptable. His negligence literally could have killed my family. Do not use this company ever. All they care about is making profit. They hire people who are not well trained and do not know what they are doing.

Review of roof replacement by Penfolds Roofing - March 2015, East 16th street, North Vancouver.
I had to get the roof replaced because the old roof has reached end of life. Had numerous companies in for quotes inclusive of the "fly by nights". Since dealing with the Penfolds Sales Manager, Jose de Freitas at Penfolds roofing everything was done in a very professional manner. He explained the roof replacement process thoroughly and clearly. I decided on the Penfolds Cedar Twin ULTRA-Scotch guard Cypress Black for the sloped roof and Residential Fast-N-Stick for the flat roof part.
I also consulted with professional engineers and my homeowner insurance company who also recommended Penfolds roofing to me. The homeowner insurance company specifically mentioned to me the warranty program of Penfolds roofing. My decision making was definitely influenced by the Penfolds warranty underwritten by their insurers. None of the competing roofing companies had such a warranty system in place.
From the time that the contract was signed I had communication with Penfolds. On Wed 3/4/2015 John Wiggins arrived and did a thorough site visit. The next day the crew under Gord arrived and the work commenced. I was very impressed with the professional manner in which the work was done and especially the quality tradesman ship with the metal work that was performed by Gord. Gord regularly communicated me with me and explained technical issues clearly, and also gave feedback on the progress of the install. I was very impressed with his skills and level of knowledge. The site was left very clean and the crew did a very good job with general housekeeping of the site in general (no nails/screws or any debris laying around). Michael completed the flashing on the torch on part of the roof.
When a problem was experienced on Sunday 3/29/2015, a technician was dispatched immediately (arrived on the site 15 minutes after my phone call to Penfolds) and the issue was dealt with promptly. Mr. Ken Mayhew communicated regularly with me while the problem got fixed. It was clear that he had a "hands on approach" to the problem and I must commend him on the customer service.
On Tuesday 03/31/2015 the job was completed and John Wiggins did a final inspection. He did a debriefing and answered all technical questions very thoroughly and clearly.
I am happy with using Penfolds Roofing for my roof replacement project. I also believe you get what you pay for. There are 4 houses in the street where I live, which had roof replacements done in the last year by the same contractor. That contractor is out of business a year after these roofs were done - Penfolds have been doing roofs in Vancouver BC for 75 years. My neighbors who used the "cheap" contractor are now in a situation where there are no warranties except maybe from the manufacturer. The neighbor now have issues and repair work a year after installation is costing them a lot of money. I will not hesitate to recommend Penfolds roofing for any roof replacement work. Thanks to the Penfolds crew including Jose De Freitas, John Wiggins, Gord and his crew and Ken Mayhew, I sleep well at night knowing that when we get 50mm of rain during the night or strong winds, I do not need to worry. Thanks. PS. After this heavy rain season I am sure glad I got myself a Penfolds roof!!!

Very good price. Workman were fast, efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. Booking contract was very clear, without any grey areas. Penfold provided WorkSafeBC paperwork as well as proof of insurance. When job was done, a quality supervisor inspected the roof to make sure everything was done correctly. Very professional indeed.
