Several years ago, the owner, Tom, gave us an estimate and told us we could wait a bit longer before replacing the roof - a level of honesty that really stood out. So when the time came, there was no question that we’d call Tom.

I called Tom for a quote on new gutters. He was friendly and came out to look at them. After discussion, he proposed that I wait to replace the gutters until I replace my roof because the roof likely only has a few years left. I was blown away by a contractor they would be looking out for my interests instead of just selling me new gutters that would have to be replaced!

We ultimately decided to have Tom’s team remove the awful gutter helmets that we had and repair the roof. The workmanship was excellent. Not only did the team take off the helmets, they cleaned all the gutters! Tom even asked then to fix a shingle that was sticking up because of a nail.

If they all wasn’t enough, they braved a hornets nest to do the work and removed it in the process. Planning to have Tom’s team back to replace the roof when it is time.

Lyons Contracting had done a great job replacing the membrane roof on my addition several years ago, so I contacted Tom Petrilli this past December to get an estimate for replacing the slate roof on my rowhouse in Del Ray. I couldn’t be happier with the work they did!

This past December, Tom was quick with giving me an estimate, sending me a contract, and putting me on his schedule. He let me know when he and his team would show up, what to expect when they started the work, and how to contact him. His team appeared on time, prepped the work area, and started the demolition work with speed and proficiency. At the end of the day, they meticulously cleaned the area of old nails, old slate, and the other debris.

Any time I had questions, I could call Tom and get a quick reply if not a visit on site. His team was experienced, knowledgeable, and efficient – a pleasure to work with. When they found that some wood around two dormer windows had rotted, Tom told me and I agreed to have him find someone he trusted to make repairs before the slate was installed around the windows. The repair work happened on time and did not affect the end date for the roof. It was a pleasure to see the care with which they trimmed and installed the slate tiles and copper flashing. And the new roof looks beautiful! I could not be happier with the results. In addition, the final cost (and time line) matched the contract estimate plus the very reasonable repairs to the windows. Many thanks to Tom’s whole crew and to Tom for their professional installation. I would not choose anyone else to touch my roof.

I've lived in my house for about 20 years. After I noticed water damage along one of my dining room walls under a skylight, I called Lyons Contracting. The owner, Tom, came over on a Saturday to take a look. I appreciated that he recorded video while on the roof to explain what was happening. He also could see that the roof shingles were various ages because of previous tree damage and repairs isolated to certain sections of the roof. Ultimately, I decided to replace the entire roof and the skylights in my dining room. After the old shingles were off, he took additional video to show me the water damage to the underlying wood. It was a great experience with excellent communication throughout. I highly recommend!

Totally professional and did a great job on our roof. Estimate/price a very good value. Tom kept us in the loop every step. Roof workers went above and beyond on post-job clean-up. And they really paid attention to their work. They installed our original roof in 2012 and here replaced part of roof damaged by falling branches during storm. Glad we stuck with them.

I had a small roof replaced. Thomas was great to work with. Very responsive, sent me videos and pictures as the work was being done, reasonable and competitively priced, started and finished the work as scheduled, cleaned up after. Zero complaints.

Lyons Contracting did an excellent job on my roof replacement. The company did my neighbor's roof and they recommended them. Tom was very responsive to my request for a proposal for a roof replacement. He came to my house the day after I called him to discuss what I wanted and what should be done. He quickly generated a proposal and cost estimate. When we accepted, we decided we wanted some additional work and Tom very quickly provided a revised cost estimate. The work was scheduled to begin two days after signing the contract.
The crew showed up on time on the scheduled day and went straight to work. Throughout the workday, they answered any questions we had. They were very professional, courteous, and friendly.

I am so glad I was referred Tom and Lyons Contracting to inspect my roof for a leak. I had been dealing with another company but it took them three visits, a hole cut in my ceiling, and three weeks to give me a quote. When I reached out to Tom late on a Friday he responded right away and scheduled an appointment for the following Monday. It turned out my roof was at end-of-life and he gave me a quote the following day to replace it. He also said he could do the job by the end of the month. Although his quote was twice as much as the first company's, Tom's quote was for a full replacement and not the band-aid the other company was proposing. I also found the videos on Tom's website that explained everything to be very helpful in understanding the difference in quality. He also sent me video from the before and after so I could see what my roof looked like. The crew came out and worked all day to finish the project including replacing rotted sections of the roof deck and facing where there had been water damage. And now I don't have to worry about my roof for another 20+ years! I highly recommend Tom and Lyons Contracting if you need to have your roof repaired or replaced, especially if it's a flat roof in Alexandria.

I am so glad that someone referred Tom and Lyons Contracting to inspect my roof for a possible replacement. When I reached out to Tom for a consult he responded right away and gave me a quote to replace the roof within a day. I was pleasantly surprised at the quote, I was expecting something over inflated given that this is NOVA and it's post-covid, but the final price was 100% fair given the size of my roof. The crew came out and worked 9+ hours a day to finish the project including replacing sections of the roof deck where there had been water damage. And they cleaned everything up, there was no trace that they had even been here. If you need to have your roof repaired or replaced call Tom and Lyons Contracting, they will take care of you.

Tom was very knowledgable and easy to talk to when discussion options. His crews works fast and the quality is amazing. So much so that I was the 5th person on my street to use Lyons Contracting to get a roof and gutters.

I chose Lyons based on the experience of friends who also had their roof replaced by Lyons, and am more than happy with the choice! Very fair price, excellent work, thorough clean-up after removing the old shingles and after completion of installation of new shingles. Photographs were taken (and supplied along with the invoice) of all damaged wood that needed replacing prior to installation of new shingles. All-in-all, a great experience.

Our roof looks great. Our house is very old and had accumulated some problems. They took care of everything. The job took two days, but the crew cleaned up the area after the first day and left the site very clean after the job was done. We’re delighted with the look of the roof and are pleased that they included ventilation features that improved on the original roof. We have no complaints about the whole process. A couple of months after the job, a 50+ mph wind blew a tree branch onto the roof and tore some shingles. Within 18 hours of my call to Tom, the shingles were replaced, no questions asked. And of course the roof looks perfect.

Lyons was able to identify and repair my roof issue immediately. I was shown the problem and advised on how to identify future issues. I will definitely call Lyons for all my future roofing needs.

Update 4/2025: Called Tom for some more roof work. Still 5 star service, great roofing replacement, excellent communication, done timely and perfect clean up afterwards. I'm especially happy with my new gutter guards! This is the kind of company you look for but rarely find. Couldn't be better.

I will gladly add my voice to the number of people who have praised Tom and team for their work. They removed our old, decaying bitumen roof with white heat-welded TPO, starting and finishing within a day, and left the site possibly cleaner than thay found it. The final invoice was identical to the initial quote. We had assumed that our gutter and facia board should both be replaced while the crew were up there, and it would have been easy money for them to do so; but Tom indicated they were both still perfectly servicable, and we needn't spend the money on replacements. Tom is great with sending timely communications and updates (photos/videos) of job progress and completion. Highly recommended!

Tom Petrilli and his crew did a great job in replacing my flat/low-slopped roof in Alexandria at a very fair price. They were very professional in their setup and execution of the work. I cannot recommend Tom and his team highly enough! We recently moved to the area and had him inspect the roof of the house we were buying. He came back with a thorough assessment, suggestions, and estimates for any work. I was worried about the state of the roof given its relatively old age, so I asked Tom for his frank assessment. He gave me his honest opinion if he were in my shoes, and said I would likely be fine without a roof replacement at the moment. Someone less principled could have easily taken advantage of the situation, said I needed a new roof, and charged me ~$20k. Having him choose honesty and integrity over up-charging me speaks to the quality of this company. We had him install gutter guards due to the heavy presence of tree debris in the area; the work was very well done and timely despite his busy schedule. Tom and his team have my highest endorsement for anyone in the NCR area.

Lyon’s came to our house to investigate a leak. They had a suspicion that a small bit of sealant would solve the problem. They did that for free! I’ll call them if the sealant gives up but so far so good. These guys know what they’re doing and are good to their customers.

Very professional and the only quote we could obtain that would actually reengineer the poorly designed awning on the house we just bought. At least 2 layers of completely rotten code violation are no longer attached to our house. All the work done in one day and I'm fully confident we'll have no more water damage due. Updates throughout the day with pictures such as below so that I don't have to climb up there to inspect. About as fun as a roofing project can be.

Tom responded very quickly and professionally and took care of the issue promptly, treating us as a priority even though it was not a major project. Lyons Contracting was recommended to me by a neighbor. I called to set up an appointment and met with Thomas Petrilli to get a quote. From the very beginning, Tom was super friendly and walked me through the process. I spoke with him about some damage to our chimney and he recommended another company that also ended up being completely hassle free. He gave a fair price and in hindsight it's a deal once you factor how smooth everything went.

When the crew arrived to install the new architectural shingles and gutter covers, they were friendly and very professional. Someone was on the ground constantly cleaning up any debris that hit the ground. It took them just over a day to do the install and we never had one single issue.

I called several roof repair companies in the area and Lyons was the most responsive. Instead of trying to upsell me over the phone (which a handful of companies did), Tom came out and gave me an honest assessment of the work that needed to be done. In fact, even though I have an older roof he told me it’s in good shape and the issue I was experiencing was due to the masonry. Hopefully I don’t have roof issues in the near future, but I definitely know who I’m calling if I do.

Fabulous responsiveness, tremendous workmanship - Made an inquiry over the weekend and got a quick response on Monday. Came by for the estimate the next day and work started and finished the 2 days later. I couldn't ask for a better experience.

There was a minor issue with the gutters not being level, so the gutters were replaced on the back of my house. Later I started having the same issues, they helped me debug the issue and made it right. They were even able to bump my appointment up to get it done early.

They were very professional and very responsive of the bunch of contracting companies I talked to. They had one of the best estimate for the job too. Totally satisfied with how they turned around our Roof. We were having leaks and our roof needed some serious work. They took their time to do the job right and did not rush to finish it and go. I am very genuinely satisfied with their work. Thank you guys!

We had a major emergency with our roof leaking. Owner Tom Petrilli personally came to our home the day of our call and performed an inspection, documented the issues with photos and videos taken during his inspection, then provided us with guidance and options.

We decided to have Tom's team replace our entire roof. Tom had his crew begin their work within a couple of days and they did a SPECTACULAR job! They were very hard working and professional while Tom was involved and kept us informed every step of the way.

I received Tom's info from my neighbor after having his roof replaced by Lyons Contracting.

My experience with Tom was great. Tom came out to assess the house shortly after I reached out and then sent professional estimates and invoicing through his online portal that detail the cost of the job. His price was very reasonable.

The roofing team was professional and replaced a half of dozen boards that had come loose. Additionally, they recommended removing my old attic fan for a newer, passive ventilation system which is working beautifully. Afterwards, I noticed that almost all of my neighbors already had this system so looks like I was late to the trend.

One thing to note is that Tom mentioned in the estimate that some debris may fall into the attic due to the work. I did have about a gallon's worth of wood chips and sawdust spread throughout the attic left over from installing the new ventilation system and replacing the roof boards. I don't see how this can be avoided but wanted put it in here so customers are aware.

I highly recommend Tom's services to anyone looking for roof repair/replacement.

We had a good experience with Lyons Contracting. Within a week after signing the contract they came. They started the work with few instructions from us. Communication with them was easy. They worked efficiently and they were well organized. A whole roof dismantling and installation was done in less than eight hours (with a lunch break).
They left the worksite: garden, shrubs, outside furniture, air conditioner clean. At our request they took a series of pictures of the old and new roofs.
Price was reasonable as was the warranty for workmanship. Excellent work performance; we can recommend Lyons Contracting.

Update from 2020: Tom could not have been more wonderful -- he came right out and fixed our problem. Each interaction we have had with Lyon's in the multiple times we've called over the years, they have been fantastic. Can't recommend them more highly!

2018: Good work, speedy job, reasonable price, nice guy! As hard as it is in NOVA to get good contractors who are interested in getting your job done quickly and at a good value - folks like Tom at Lyons really stand out in a good way. Definitely recommend.

I called Lyon asking for an assessment of the health of my flat roof. I recently purchased the home and felt the inspection was incomplete and I wanted to know more about my roof, including how long it would last and how much it would cost to replace. Tom came out the next day and did a walking inspection. He explained in detail what kind of roof I had, the problems with the initial install, the likely remaining life of the roof, and where and what kind of problems I was likely to encounter. He identified a couple of issues that needed to be addressed and fixed them on the spot free of charge. I haven’t yet encountered any serious roof issues but when I do, Lyon will be my only call. I highly recommend.

Update: I used Lyon to replace my badly deteriorated roof. The team did exceptional and clean work. Tom is a very friendly no-nonsense contractor -very easy to deal with. He returns calls and texts promptly, which is not the norm in my experience. Look no further.

Lyons installed my roof in 2015, and it was a great experience! I've had no trouble since. Tom was especially nice to come over and put a patch on the roof while I was in the queue for replacement, because there was a big storm coming and I was afraid of more water damage in my house. Two years after the initial installation, Tom came back to install a vent for a bathroom fan. He is kind, knowledgeable, efficient, and very responsive! I highly recommend for any homeowner, but they seemed especially experienced with the flat, rubber-membrane roofs that are so common in Alexandria. Thanks, Tom & Lyons Contracting!

2022 UPDATE: My neighbor replaced his upper roof and we went in on replacing our shared porch roof. Everything went seamlessly, from the estimate to the installation. I learned today that Tom has employed the same 10 people for 16 years--which says a lot if you're concerned about how the contractors you hire treat their employees. They worked really efficiently and left both yards spotless. I remain very impressed by Lyons Contracting!
