Independent Power

We used Independent Power to install a head pump and mini splits into our home. The system has been super nice during the summer so far! Good company to work with and installation was pretty painless.

If you are considering upgrading your home power management systems, I have some very good input for you. I recently had Independent Power install 20kWh of batteries and integrate the Enphase Controller with my generator and Photovoltaic (Solar) Panels. From the "get-go" I dealt with Noah who is a very competent electrician and was well versed on a wide range of product options and technologies. We settled on Enphase and their 3G controller as it was Certified to operate with my Generac Water Cooled Generator. He “spec’d” out an ideal configuration for my needs. This led me to meet Whitney - the Designer and Project Manager, who was EXTREMELY helpful in adding two very important components to this system. With permits in hand Alonso, Zeek, and Zach completed the installation of four panels (three shown in one location and a fourth in a second location). All wiring was in wall - with a fully integrated heat detector system in the garage. Photos show the battery panels with protective film still installed.

Logan came out to do the initial walkthrough. He was very professional, on time, and knowledgeable. A pleasure to work with.

Great sales, install, and follow-up people, and coordinated well with a difficult HOA and neighbor contact situation. All were more knowledgeable than the folks I had in from other companies. Work seems to be of high quality. They were able to add a humidifier to the system late in design, and so far the system has worked extremely well. TJ, Bryan, RJ, Carley, and Il were all extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

I had IPS install an 8 kW rooftop PV system at my home in Denver and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. Luke communicated well during the sales process and Megan did a great job keeping me in the loop re: all details in the permit and construction phase. It only took a few months to get everything up and running after I signed the contract. Highly recommend this team!

Independent Power did a great job quoting, designing and installing our rooftop solar and battery system. They were very accommodating with our mid-stream request to change vendors on the battery wall, and they also worked with our roofing installer to coordinate timing as well as care of our brand new shingles as they were working on the roof. We have some background/expertise in electrical engineering and interconnection to the grid; they handled our many questions and requests for technical information with ease and competence. All in all, a very professional job, and we can't commend them enough. Special kudos to Kevin, Megan, Luke, and Rick (along with others on the team) for a job well done.

Independent Power Installed a a 6Kw grid tied system on my house in Lyons CO this Summer.

This was completed on budget, a little ahead of schedule and everything is working well.

Additionally they worked well with the town regarding the additional permitting needed because my house is located in the St. Vrain floodway and covered this extra cost.

I have given this 5 Star review because they exceeded expectations by dealing with the flood plain issues and finished a little ahead of schedule.

Logan came to our house on time to do a site survey for solar system. He kept my house clean after he went to attics to check the structures. He was knowledgeable with his work and answered all my questions. He was very careful with my plants while doing the measurements.

IPS did an outstanding job of installing a new home backup battery at our house. We had a very complicated project that required below grade splicing the main utility feed to raise the utility meter, consolidating two service panels into one, relocating a bunch of electrical gear, and integrating with our existing solar system. We talked with a number of other installers who were all unwilling to deal with the complexity of the project. Whitney (project manager), Dave, PJ and Alonso we all solution oriented, super responsive, professional, and knowledgeable.

Independent Power's Senior Technical Sales and Design Manager, Noah, spent some time assessing our home for back-up batteries to our solar. He was creative and at the same time practical with his thinking. He was very personable, honest, listened to our needs, and was clear with how he explained things. Josh and Kaelen conducted the initial evaluation and determination of min-split heat pump to be installed. While working on that project they identified and fixed a long standing circuit breaker issue which had stumped multiple electricians in the past. Independent Power finished the installation of our cold-climate heat pump on January 6, just about a week before the super cold, sub-zero temperatures hit. We knew it was going to be the first big test of the system, and I'm happy to say that it came through with flying colors! Our house stayed nice and toasty throughout the cold snap. We still have a gas furnace for part of the house, but we didn't even think of firing it up because we never needed it. Really impressed with the system's performance over the cold snap and in its first month of operation!

Now a few words about the Company itself. My understanding is that IPS hasn't been doing heat pump installations all that long, but that they hired people with lots of previous heat pump installation experience. It sure seemed that way to me--the crew that installed our system, which was fairly complex, was really professional, highly skilled, and very responsive to my questions and requests. I gotta say, I was impressed with how quickly and efficiently the team worked.

As I mentioned, our system is rather complex: part of it (our lower level and upper level) uses existing ductwork, and the other part (living room, kitchen, dining room) uses wall units. Based on my request, they installed the refrigerant lines in such a way that they are completely hidden. Originally the estimator had specified a route for the lines that would have had a lot of the lines outside the house and also would have required them to punch holes in the ceiling every few feet (which we would then need to repair at added cost). They accommodated my request for the alternate route, which made for a more difficult installation, but a much cleaner one.

Another thing I'll mention is that the crew was very careful about cleaning up after themselves at the end of every day. They were all very polite and answered a lot of questions that I and my wife had. Definitely high marks for customer support!

We needed an electrical upgrade to handle the extra power draw of the heat pump. The electrician came out in advance of the install to scope out the existing panel and plan the work. He told me exactly where he was going to run the lines and the new grounding system that we needed. His work was very clean and exactly as specified. Extra added bonus: now every breaker has a label describing the circuit that it serves! Plus, we now have a lot of extra capacity for any new loads in the future.

I will say that there is a small learning curve with heat pumps. The working fluid doesn't get nearly as hot as a gas flame, so the system uses a slower fan speed and less air flow than a gas furnace. That means that it takes these systems longer to come up to a set point than a conventional furnace. So if you use a nighttime setback temperature, you probably don't want to let it drop as far as you did with your furnace because it will take longer to come back up to your desired temp in the morning. Even so, we've found that we can use a nighttime temp of 62 and unless it's brutally cold outside, the house is usually back up to 70 by the time we come downstairs around 7 am. Also, the user guide that comes with the Mitsubishi wall units leaves a lot to be desired. It can take a while to understand how to control the wall units so they perform the way you want, but we got the hang of it in a couple weeks.

All in all, I'm a very satisfied customer and would strongly recommend IPS for your heat pump installation!

A+ install experience for a 200A panel upgrade, heat pump, and mini split install. It's rare for a company to have both a stellar HVAC and electrical team. I'll absolutely be looking to Independent for future electrification jobs.

We had a terrific experience going solar with Independent Power. As a first step, we used Energy Sage to help us meet and negotiate with three solar vendors in our area (Larimer Co., CO). Independent was the most responsive and cost-competitive of all the vendors we spoke with. Installation of our system was complicated, in part because we asked Independent to also include an EV Charger in our scope of work, and in part because we had to work w/ our local utility to upgrade our area's transformer, wiring, and breaker panel to accommodate these new systems before they could be activated. Independent's team was with us every step of the way, liaised w/ the utility so we didn't have to, and met every single one of our needs! Special shout outs to electricians Dave and PJ, project tech Jan (an incredible young Navajo woman who not only serve's Independent's clients but also is working to promote solar energy with American Indian nations across America), and our project manager, Kyle. From start to finish, working with Independent Power (IP) was an exceptional experience. After interviewing several solar companies, it became clear that IP stood out from the competition. Many companies function like general contractors (GCs), where the sales team sells you a system and then subs out the installation. With IP, you work with one dedicated team from start to finish, ensuring consistent communication and quality throughout the process.

As a mechanical engineer by education—and admittedly a very detail-oriented client—I came with a lot of technical questions. The team at IP, from the sales representatives to the installation crew and support staff, always had informed and thoughtful answers. Their expertise was evident every step of the way.

In terms of cost, most solar installations range from $2.75–$3.25 per watt installed before incentives, and IP’s pricing was right in line with the market. However, what sets them apart is their quality. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail far surpassed what I’ve heard from others’ experiences. We opted for QCells panels to support American manufacturing and paired them with Enphase inverters for their reliability and performance. It felt great to “go American” with this investment!

The installation crew was phenomenal—professional, efficient, and friendly. A special shout-out to Jan, Dave, Rhys, Harrison, Lee, and the rest of the team (apologies if I missed anyone!) for making the process smooth and enjoyable. The heat zones in my home haven't been right for years and its just something that I thought was normal for a boiler system, cold in some rooms, hot in others. Dakota came to diagnose the problem and was so thorough and spent so much time explaining the system to me, and then diagnosed it perfectly! The price was fair as well.
When the part came in, he made sure that I had heat before the first cold spell, and now the heat in all the rooms is so even. I am so happy with Independent and Dakota!

I cannot recommend them Highly enough. The entire team from office staff to technicians was professional, and involved with trying to get my system going again after Xcel's meter upgrade. After Xcel replaced my meters, the inverters started throwing errors. I called Xcel and they claimed that the problem was with the solar system. I called IPS and they came out and checked and everything was OK with the system. Xcel came back and again claimed it was the solar system, so Rick Roser came out. checked it yet again, took pictures showing the issue was with the meter, explained to me what was going on and offered to make himself available for Xcel. Xcel claimed it could not be the meter, but eventually came out and replaced the meter.. Of course it turned out that it was the meter.

We had a great experience working with IPS to install our mini-splits/heat pump last month. First we engaged with Nick, who helped us decide on the scope of work that would best suit our needs. He is incredibly easy to work with and knowledgeable about rebates. We've always wanted mini-splits but didn't think they would be cost effective. Nick helped us figure out a plan including rebates that would make it financially viable to get mini-splits.

Then we met with Josh the electrician who was also great. We've had a few other electricians come out to scope this work, and none have been remotely as friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to understand as Josh. He is an excellent communicator and I plan to work with him for future electrical projects.

Our install was done by Josh, TJ, Ricky, and Dakota. The crew was great, worked efficiently, and were friendly. We plan to work with IPS for future projects.

From start to finish the team at Independent Power made the process of installing a mini-split in our new home a breeze. From the estimate, to explaining the tax credits and rebates, to the scheduling and to the final install the team was very professional and willing to answer all of our questions. We used IPS to install snow dogs on our existing solar panel system. Communication was excellent from the start (thanks, Cierra!), and everything went very smoothly. We highly recommend this company for any solar panel service needs.

I had a negative experience with IPS. I chose IPS over my preferred installer because IPS said that they had my panels in stock and reserved for my project. After 5 months of delays, I found out they did not have my panels in stock, and installation was completed only after downgrading the panels twice. In the end, I'm satisfied with the quality of work, but I regret not going with the other installer who had higher quality panels.
EDIT: I asked for the REC panels, but there would have been a large increase in cost for the REC panels, so my system has SunPower panels. SunPower is currently in bankruptcy, and I'm uncertain if the new owner will honor the warranty.

Independent Power did two great jobs for us, a pure electric project and also complete replacement of tired AC and gas forced air heater with a Mitsubishi Heat Pump HVAC system.
For electric project, Josh and team did a fantastic job on our project! Figured out how to feed multiple outdoor circuits with minimal impact on both interior drywall and exterior siding. Cody and Josh both provided excellent aesthetic and practical advice on placement of fixtures, outlets and switches. Whole crew is a pleasure to work with, would absolutely use them again!

For Heat Pump HVAC, we worked with Nick to develop the design concept, then Kaelan, Dakota and crew implemented it. Combination ducted system and mini splits. They did a great job and have been available after commissioning to answer question for us. They did a great job and we have appreciated having AC again during super hot days. 5 stars and highly recommended.

Josh and Kael came to do a generator interlock. Friendly and professional we walked thru that project and a couple of others they were here to do, before and after and explained things well. Have used IPS for solar in the past and the whole team is easy to work with.

Had a great experience getting two new 50 Amp circuits (garage + kitchen) into an already packed panel without having to install a subpanel. Josh and Marino were able to come up with a creative solution for the induction stove wiring that saved us a lot of money and avoided cutting into the drywall in the basement ceiling and did a great job in a timely fashion! Would highly recommend!

I had a small job that needed to be done and contacted 3 different electric companies. Cody got back to me immediately and when I got the job scheduled in Josh was the technician that came out to do the job. Josh couldn't have been nicer and even though the job turned out to be trickier than they estimated they still honored the original estimate. Honestly, great customer service and I would use them again in a heartbeat.

I used Independent Power to do several electrical projects in my house. They were awesome. On time, efficient, and tidy. They came up with creative and safe solutions to some projects that have stymied me for a while. Everything works great. I was super impressed. Alonso and John Marino were great.

Josh was friendly and professional, and did a great job installing our EV charger. He explained everything clearly and left the garage very clean.

I want to add that we also had some of our solar panels removed for a roof repair, and reinstalled. Jan and her team did a great job, and we are back online. We got the panels from IPS about 15 years ago, and they are still doing great.

Update: They had someone who cancelled and are able to move us up for install. We are getting install on 7/11 and signed the project 6/11. In whole they are still 2 weeks over original estimate - but 2 weeks early on the new install they gave for 7/25 so I gave them some credit for that. We still were expecting original install week of 6/24 and that got moved to 7/25. Now its 7/11 so 2 weeks out past what was expected. I went up to 4 stars instead of just 3 because the team did do everything possible to remedy the situation. Manager reached out with a discount and to address the situation - Sales man reached out to remedy things as well - and the project manager stayed on top of everything after she was made aware of the issues. 10/10 for customer support and post sale efforts.

We were told about a weekend install for an additional $500 and turns out that's not even something they offer. We had to sign the contract to get "in the queue" and installation was told could be done within the next 2 weeks - when in reality we were looking at 6 weeks. The finance options they have were a bad experience as well.

Fabulous job! Josh, Marino and Kael worked wonders on a complicated remodel of my challenging old house (nod to 2Q homes). Josh offererd numerous insightful, practical, and affordable design ideas regarding lighting locations, style and switch locations. Perfect execution, with frequent updates as to issues, solutions, and timelines.

Plus, I was very comfortable with them in my home, and greatly appreciated the frequent consultation and daily cleanup. The team did a second job for me, updating lighting in the other parts of the house to modernize. I am extremely happy with the result!

Josh did electrical work on a vacant second home while we were away. We had just bought the place. It had various electrical issues. He was great to work with. Heommunicated beautifully. He completed the work on time and precisely. The cost was less than I expected. I will definitely plan to work with him again when we plan modifications. Also, the building has a solar system installed by Independent Power before we bought the place. That system has worked seemlessly and Independent Power made the ownership transition easy.

We had some hiccups after install was completed but they were able to sort it out and the panels have been working great since. My frustration though has been that the proposal was misleading on expected savings on utility bills. Specifically it showed that we would save up credits over the summer months and cover the winter months with those. However, with net metering that is not how it works out and we have ended up with much higher bills than we were expecting, even though the amount of energy produced is as expected. I wish they had been more upfront with that and included that in the modeling so that we could have decided whether it was worth it or worth adding batteries. Our usage has not changed so that doesnt explain the bill differences.

Nick Jones came out to service our Mitsubishi air-conditioning unit. He was fast, thorough, and showed me how to do basic maintenance myself. Fair price, and he mentioned in passing that they put people with MS at the front of the line when the heat spikes. I'll be telling a friend about that. They care about people.

We were very happy with Independent Power! They were professional, affordable, and persistent with the slow process of permitting through Boulder County to upgrade our electric panel. Would definitely work with them again and recommend them to others!

Josh and his apprentice were very friendly and knowledgeable and were able to address all our concerns. We had a bad outlet which is now working perfectly, and they fixed a light fixture that was shorting out. They will be coming back in the next few days to replace a few older light fixtures. In addition, and most importantly, they love our dogs (all 3) which greeted them with a few barks and lots of licks. We would highly recommend them!

Had a coordination snafu that was no one's fault, but Cody, Josh and Alonso took care of it without any falk. I truly believe you see what a group is made of by how they handle it when something goes slightly wrong. They did a little rework to make us happy, and we are very satisfied. Looking forward to connecting PV and a heat pump to our new panel.

Out of 4 quotes I got, Independent power was the only company that would put ceiling cassettes in (a much better look that the wall cassettes in my opinion). They also came in at a more competitive cost with higher quality equipment than the 3 other companies I got bids from. In addition, the quality of their work was exceptional. Finally, they were a pleasure to work with. everyone I interacted with was extremely professional and very kind. I can't say enough good things about my experience. The only thing that could have made my purchase better would have been more competitive financing options. Independent power was lacking here compared to it's competitors. But if you have the cash on hand to get work done, Independent Power would be my first choice.

Alonso went above and beyond when performing the electrical rough-in and trim-out of our basement remodel. Upon arrival, he thoroughly went over every detail of the job, ensuring everything would be done to specification. Even despite a couple of unforeseen obstacles, he and his apprentice Martino worked diligently to get the job done right. And they did it all with a smile and a can-do attitude.

Alonso was also courteous in offering his expertise on questions I had, even coming back the following day to resolve a potential framing issue that may have come up during inspection. It certainly wasn't something he needed to do, but that's just the kind of guy he is, always putting the customer first.

All in all, Alonso's attention to detail, efficiency, and outstanding service make him a true asset in his field, and to Independent Power. I've already recommended him to friends, and without hesitation, I highly recommend Alonso and the Independent Power Team to anyone in need of electrical services. Andrew was very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and ultimately made the decision to use IPS a no-brainer. We look forward to all the steps ahead. If they are as easy as working with Andrew, it will be a breeze.

Update (Aug 2024): 1.5 years after installation, one of our panels stopped working because of a faulty part. We are going to be out-of-pocket more than $1k to get it fixed, half of that for the part, the other for service time/labor. At this point, we felt nickel-and-dimed by IPS.

Update (Mar 2025): More than six months went by, but I think we worked out an agreement. The manufacturer of the panel has since gone bankrupt, so we cannot get a claim processed for the replacement. We met in the middle and will have some out of pocket expense to replace the faulty panel. Had a good conversation with Trevor (ownership) and seemed to get on common ground. It's taken a lot longer than it should have, but we're back to normal for now. Hope that we don't have further issues.
