When the work started, they started on a Friday evening. I don’t know if that’s normal but I was happy as a clam when I saw work starting Friday evening and then ramping up on Saturday.

Having work starting quick and then just seeing progress each day for the next 1-2 weeks was wonderful. Once again a great company to work with.

I was extremely impressed with the work that this company does. They are a top-notch organization and you can tell that they take care of not only customers but also their employees. I was particularly impressed with how non-intrusive they were when they came to do the job. They didn’t even knock at the door, but simply went around back and got started. They were done within a day and you could tell that everyone on the team knew exactly what their tasks were and they worked like a fine oiled machine together. I absolutely love my new deck and I’m so happy that I won’t have to deal with wood anymore. It looks amazing and we have gotten so many compliments on it. The lights were a perk that came with it and we did add on the gate for our puppies. Money well spent! I have also referred them to a friend and she is very pleased with her work as well.

Absolutely a great experience with this team; from start to finish. Our initial assessment with Jaiden to figure out our design options and measurements. My interactions continued with Tim Diehr who helped us get the design and products set up. Then the design build team discussion with Josh were ironed out and he heard what we wanted done with the deck set up though it was an unusual request. The team lead by Roberto were absolutely amazing. One of he best teams I have ever worked with when it comes to home building and design concepts. They were timely, efficient and respectful of our property. Michael , Jr was great to work with and he was extremely helpful in getting orders correct and project completion. Overall the process was great. We are extremely pleased with how the final product turned out and are loving the deck. Great work team!!!

The sales process with FDB is fairly typical. A friendly guy (named Josh, in our case) shook our hands, took our deposit money and happily assured us that our deck would be awesome.

We went whole hog. This was a huge investment for us, as a deck is for most families. We had waited years to build one, and we wanted it to be great. We opted for Trex with lots of upgrades. We even decided to splurge and get a Trex spiral staircase so that we could optimize the space on the patio below. In pictures, and in theory, it seemed like a great idea. “How’s your experience with spiral stairs?” I asked Josh. “Well,” he said, “yours will be the first we’ve ever installed, but you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

The next year was a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from, and the trouble began right away when the first crew showed up and didn’t have correct plans to follow to dig holes for the footers.

There’s so much I could write about, and I have all the receipts. I try to dissuade everyone I know about that is considering using this company NOT to do so. I have so much documentation, photos, videos, audio recordings, but let me just tell you about the stairs.

The railing for the spiral stairs was bent with a sizeable, obvious dent in it (the crew was supposed to unroll it and rotate it as they did, but clearly had hurried through the process and kinked it). They actually suggested that it was no big deal and they would just apply some Bondo…to an aluminum, powder-coated stair rail. That’s the level of expertise we were dealing with. After I pushed back enough, they finally ordered a replacement rail, which they proceeded to scratch and marr to oblivion while they were installing it. Yes, I have pictures and videos.

The stair railing turned out to be the least of my concerns when it came to the stairs. As time passed—after they had taken our final payment—the treads on the stairs began to dislodge. They would promise to come out and “fix” the issue. Their fix was to simply drill more holes through the steel staircase and sink more wood screws into the treads. These composite deck boards were rotting away and the screws were not holding tightly enough. Their solution? Add more screws. Twice, I fell when a board dislodged and nearly landed on exposed screws. Thankfully, it was me that fell and not my children or my wife.

When I asked to see the installation instructions the crew had used, they showed me a technical blueprint that they had taped to the siding of my house. It was a one-sheet drawing that mostly just showed dimensions. I simply used Google, later, to find the manufacturer’s website featured comprehensive, step-by-step installation instructions and hardware diagrams. That was how I learned that the crew had either lost the stair treads and hardware that had been shipped, or it was never in the delivery to begin with, and they hadn’t checked the box in time to alert the manufacturers that there were components missing. These scammers used Trex boards to make their own stair treads, cut them to size—and poorly, I might add—then proceeded to screw wood screws directly into the boards when the manufactured stairs were supposed to have steel inserts to accept matching bolts. The original fastener system would have prevented all of the issues with the stairs being loose and unsafe. This company continually covered up their errors and denied me any restoration or compensation for all of the follow-up expenses I had to incur just to make our deck safe again. They had the gall to ghost me and tell me it was a warranty issue and I should take it up with Trex. By the way, Trex corporate isn’t any better at advocating for customers who have been scammed by people who happily drive around town in trucks wrapped with their brand name.

That’s a small fraction of the hardship we endured with this company. I encourage you to stay away.

Truly a 5 star experience. Tim was amazing with his proposal and recommending which products to use. Their team beat the timeline on permits and building our beautiful deck by over 2 weeks. Their customer service is excellent and their pricing is one of the best in the area. Had 3 other quotes. Thanks and look forward to our next outside project.

Fredericksburg Deck Builders was great to work with! They installed our deck before we bought the house so we reached out to them to build a roof over the deck. They worked with us to come up with a plan that fit our needs and budget. Everyone we worked with at the company was very responsive and helpful. We are very happy with the finished product!

Our old wooden deck was turning into a bit of a hazard – spongy, rotting, you name it! Luckily, we stumbled upon Fredericksburg Deck Builders, recommended by some friends who knew exactly what we were after. We went with composite decking this time to steer clear of any more spongy surprises, fingers crossed! The team worked very efficiently, and we're looking forward to enjoying it more this Spring!

We loves their work so much on our wooden deck that when the inevitable replacement was needed, we didn't trust another company to do the work. While working with their design team and carpenters, they came up with a look beyond what I would have thought of on my own. This included removing the old deck wood which needed replacing, rebuilding the steps, installing TREX decking, aluminum railings, and screening in the porch. The numerous wood support post were wrapped with PVC and painted to match the TREX decking.

Front porch, Deck and patio project was completed over the fall. From estimate to design planning to execution, the process went smoothly and the company did well at communicating during each stage of the job. We love our new outdoor living space!!

They stand behind their work and when there was an issue, they worked to remedy it so I was completely satisfied. Very happy with the final result. It turned out even better than I imagined.

FDB experience was outstanding. They replaced an outside stairway leading from an elevated main level deck to a grade level walk below. Their product and materials quality was excellent, price was very competitive, and their sales rep services and installation crew personnel were first rate. The Fredericksburg Deck Builders team did an amazing job on my new deck! Their attention to detail was exceptional on the installation as well as the cleanup afterwards. They stayed on schedule and on budget too. I could not be happier with the results!

We had an extension deck built around a swim spa. Mike coordinated all the moving pieces and worked with our swim spa vendor. Workmanship was great as well as follow through. Would highly recommend.

The best contractor we've ever dealt with. They were quite a bit less expensive than the other companies we talked to, and we got a lot of "extra's" from them. We got a 50 year warranty, the option to have a different color trim on the edges, and deck lights. They were also able to start within 2 weeks of our signing the contract. Other companies had said it would be a couple of months before they'd start. They also completed the whole project in 2 days; while all the others had quoted at least a week to finish the project. They were here promptly, even earlier than expected in the mornings and worked hard until dark. I can't say enough good about them!!!

Bottom line up front: Fredericksburg Deck Builders (FDB) is one of the, if not the best contractors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. We have a large, multi-level deck that needed re-surfacing, and were torn over whether to go with pressure treated wood again (for the third time) or invest in composite so this would be the last time. At the end it was an easy decision to make.

We received quotes from a few different companies besides FDB, a small independent contractor and a larger company in the region (think annoying radio commercials with a horrible jingle) included; at the end of the day there was no struggle to make our selection. Nobody else was offering the experience FDB was.

FDB came and took pictures and measurements of our project, then invited us to their design center where they had already drawn up plans and had samples of the different decking and rail options to choose from. What I appreciated during this phase was the fact that while there was no attempt to upsell, Tim and Mike honestly answered our questions, offered recommendations based on their experience (various options to choose from), and simply listened to us. They genuinely seemed more interested in meeting our needs than anything else.

Needless to say, they earned our business. Once the contract was signed, there was a dumpster and material delivered and a crew onsite to begin demolition of the old deck in two days. The crew was awesome, showed up when they said they would each day and worked their tails off. They completely cleaned the site of all debris at the end of each day, neatly stacking other materials so there was no clutter. They are true craftsmen and women, obviously very experienced in what they do; we were very happy not to have a jack of all trades, but masters in deck building working on our project.

As with any project, as homeowners, there were a couple “nits” we raised, they were promptly addressed to our satisfaction without question or hesitation by Josh and Tom. Now that the project is completed, I can’t help but walk out and admire our fantastic new deck, over and over, we could not be more pleased. The before and after pictures say it all! And we actually paid less than we would have with the independent contractor or larger company. FDB could not possibly get a higher recommendation from us!

The Fredericksburg Deck Builders team was a pleasure to work with. They were professional and friendly. I could tell they cared about providing a quality end product. I also appreciate the way they answered all my questions. There were a couple of minor hiccups but they did not hinder the project and were addressed quickly (i.e. the way I wanted an installed door to swing was drawn incorrectly on the plan, but got addressed before the install). I would definitely recommend them and would use them again.

Great experience with Fredericksburg Deck Builders! From the front end with Tim in Sales, through our project completion with Josh managing the process, absolutely top notch. We had a large concrete and flagstone patio built, and a deck with Rain Escape, and we could not be happier. All of the trades were outstanding as well, and they took such care with all details and craftsmanship. We highly highly recommend!

Recently moved to Virginia into a new build. Home had no functional egress from the sliding back door. Am I glad I stumbled across Fredricksburg Deck Builders! Customer service is important to me and I wasn't disappointed. From the initial estimate to the final inspection, Joshua was informative, patient and personable. Pricing seemed fair, considering cost of supplies. Work completed in a timely manner and everything was cleaned up after the work was done. We are very happy with our beautiful little deck...now if it will just stop raining so we can enjoy it

At first everything was good going through the estimate and scheduling, but was told on July 13 they would start the 14th and be done by the 20th. Nobody showed until the 15th dig holes and that was it so had holes in my yard uncovered for my dogs and kids all weekend, they come back Monday the 18th make some good progress then nobody shows the 19th so on the 20th at noon still nobody shows so I call. It takes me ever to get hold of Josh, he tells me they will be out the next day and finish up friday so they show up the 21st at almost noon so only work half a day, then they work Friday the 22nd and still not finished. They come back Monday the 25th I get home from work around five they have the entire driveway blocked with materials and their van. They leave shortly after and I go into the back yard and I have lumber thrown all over my yard, bucket of nails in the middle of yard no lid, screws laying in yard and deck exposed for my dogs and kids, and noticed they were using my step ladder which I didn't give them permission, lumber and pallet of concrete scattered in driveway to where I can only use half my driveway for over a week now.

During the signing I asked Josh why I had to pay 1k for lights on steps I didn't ask for he said it was code so I said ok but I don't see any signs of lights being installed.

The deck is still not finished, I will update this review once it's completed but so far very unhappy and will not recommend this company to anyone.

7/27 UPDATE: The deck is now finished, I am happy with the deck craftsmanship is good. Still will not recommend this company because of the lack of professionalism and quality of management.

I would NOT recommend this company. We had them come out and they did a quote for a small back yard patio. We got the quote and set up financing for it. The day we went to their office to give them a down payment and sign the contract we received a new quote for the same job. This time it’s about $1,300 dollars more. They refused to HONOR the original quote or even meet us half way. I attempted to call them
later about the project but they were”busy” and never returned the call. STAY AWAY

If I could give them zero stars I would, on lack of care for customer service. If you want no communication on when builders are supposed to come out to your house or when the county is coming to inspect, but get calls and emails for collecting money...these are the builders for you! I honestly think if I didn't mention the cosmetic issues to the second county guy (we failed inspection twice) FDB would not have come out that same day county was scheduled to do final inspection. Overall happy with the actual guys that came out to build the deck and with the final look. But I would not hire FDB again. I hired them to liaise between the county and me or the contractor and me. I did not get that and I came forth with wanting communication, I understand that it is peak time (during the summer is really busy for builders) I have requested multiple times for more communication email, voice mail, text..ie but never got that. So my opinion is stay clear from this company. pictures attached with my deck and cosmetic issues they fixed.

*Update* I have video evidence that shows the 2 times Josh came out to look at the deck* not the "numerous" times the owner claims. This is very upsetting that they lie to cover their reputation.

Fred Deck was very professional during the entire process of our Deck/Patio/Screen. All their workers were skilled and produced quality work. Our project exceeded our initial concept. The materials are of great quality. I recommend this company for your next Deck project.

My wife and I were originally happy with our deck. We have had some issues with our Trex materials and have reached out to this company to hopefully address these issues. I have messaged and called this company with the hopes they would honor their warranty. Our deck was completed in May 2020. The issues with our Trex started in June/July 2020. I have contacted this company 3 times and even completed their Trex survey acknowledging the issues with them and Trex. As I know they are busy with other customers, I am dismayed with the lack of accountability especially with the amount of money I sank into this project. We are frustrated that it is December 2020 and we have yet to have a call back or a representative come out to address this issue.

Everything started off good with our deck, we had no problems. However, my reason for the 1 star is we have been trying to contact Josh about repairs on our deck. Pieces are missing and its like the Trex materials have shifted. We have tried reaching out to Josh since July and even took a survey for Trex about our concerns. Our deck was finished in May.

It's now December and we still haven't heard from Fburg deck builders. We have left countless messages and sent emails only to get no reply. With that being said I would save yourself the trouble and look around before going with this company.

Fredericksburg Deck Builders recently finished our deck and we are beyond happy with the finished product as well as the overall experience. They were professional throughout the whole process and left us with a beautiful and well made deck that we will enjoy for years to come.

When hiring a company, reviews are extremely helpful to us when making a final decision on who to hire. So I thought I’d share ours!

We just recently had a few projects finished by this company. Originally, we hired them because their quoting process was done on the spot and in person. Their pricing was also reasonable, but slightly on the higher end. They could also address our entire project as a whole. This included addressing our drainage issues, (water would get in our basement during heavy rains) regrading the backyard, building a patio with French drains and sitting walls around our basement door and building a 12x36 deck. Throughout this process, I felt as if this company was all over the place. They would start our job, and have to stop to continue a previous job. Start to finish, this took about 30 days, which we felt was a bit dragged out. Our previous deck builder had a deck done start to finish in 3 days (Lowe’s), so hopefully you can understand why we were a bit irritated and disappointed about that.

Fredericksburg Deck Builders came up with the plan to address our drainage issues. Which included regarding the backyard, the patio with sitting walls, and French drains. The grading work is already starting to digress back to its original state. Despite the fact that we have grass growing. Considering it’s only been 2 weeks, and we spent about $23,000, this is also discouraging. I asked them about their warranty on such work and have not heard back yet. Usually, this company would seed and straw the disturbed areas. However, since we have hills that cause these problems, we asked them to leave the grass seed and not to provide straw (the straw always ends up collecting in a gully). We never received grass seed.

The deck process was extremely lengthy. I believe they are training new contractors, which would have been nice to know from the start. We may have been a bit more understanding of the lengthy process. The footing inspection alone was delayed. They had to re-dig the holes 3 times (they were not deep or wide enough). This set us back about 4 days. We ended up having to create a platform with steps and drop the entire deck down in order to attach it to the house. Due to some miscommunication, that was done wrong. They did come back and correct it to match what we had originally discussed. But once again, the final inspection failed. The 4x4’s that held up the railing on the steps was not properly supported. Meaning it was very wobbly. They addressed that a few days later.

Since we had been burned previously by the builder of our home, we’ve learned to look over everything before making the final payment. Overall, everything looks pretty good. Some parts of the deck don’t feel as solid as I’d like them to be. Some of the railing post don’t meet the top of the rails. When securing the floor boards, you can see that many of them missed the beams. We are somewhat satisfied with their work, but would not hire them regarding future projects.

Fredericksburg Deck Builders is highly professional and thorough. They did an excellent job understanding our needs and providing a timely estimate. Once we authorized them to proceed they were very versed with the local permitting process and started work shortly after receiving local approval. The work product was awesome and everyone was great to work with! Thank You!

We had a deck installed 10/19. They all were very professional and did an amazing job. From scheduling to picking up extra wood left we never had to harass them or wait and wonder. We recommend them to everyone.

This company has made our deck building experience a nightmare and we wish we had never met them. Just bad craftsmanship and poor quality of workmanship. Customer service is unprofessional and project final expectation was far from what we were told. 3 months over due on our project. I would never recommend them to anyone. After being threatened by the owner Mike before the project was completed and yelled at on my own property, I will be seeking retribution.
