As an interior designer I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Tim Burch and his outstanding team at BOWA for over two years. Tasked with renovating a historic property I knew BOWA and their skilled professionals had the resources and talent to get the job done! Tim and his team delivered outstanding service and quality always working alongside me and the homeowners to make sure every detail was considered. As an interior designer, I am always asked, who do you recommend as a contractor. With confidence I say Steve Scholl and the BOWA team. Recently I worked alongside him and the BOWA team on a full house renovation project. From the initial meeting until the final walk thru, Steve was meticulous, organized and thoughtful how he approached the project. He spent time upfront listening to the client's needs, concerns, budget and timelines. During the design meetings, trade walk throughs and budgeting meetings, his primary focus was the client and holding the team accountable to meet the client's expectation. BOWA is simply the very best builder and remodeling firm out there. We hired BOWA to modernize our awkward 1950s brick split level and they delivered a gorgeous product white glove service across-the-board. When you hire BOWA, you get a team dedicated to your project, including an interior designer with beautiful and creative ideas, and a team lead who is your contact throughout. When construction started, a project manager stayed at our home all day, every day, to ensure that everything was taken care of on time, on budget, and to address in real time any unforeseen issues. Even after construction, we have designated contacts to take care of anything that goes wrong (very little so far) and handle anything additional we would like done.

I simply cannot imagine ever hiring another company to do renovations. They handle everything and made our house a stunning home.

We're several weeks into a kitchen remodel with Bowa, which was recommended by a friend who has used the company for several renovations to her home. The process has been seamless, from the initial contact to the design stage (kudos to Lindsey!) to the demolition and reconstruction. And somehow we're ahead of schedule!

Doug Horgan, Jim Harris, and the whole crew at BOWA are, quite simply, the best. Over the years, they have done 3 different renovations for us—all beautifully executed and planned so as to present the minimum possible amount of stress for us. All of the BOWA teammates are always so pleasant to work with, so reliable, so very helpful in every way. And they stand by their work. We just had an unexpected issue arise from some structural work they did 10 years ago, and Doug diagnosed the problem, reminded me that the work was still under warranty, and found a great solution. I cannot say enough good things about BOWA.

My family is seriously loyal to BOWA, and for good reason. About seven years ago, BOWA managed a total renovation and expansion of the two main floors of our house in Arlington. This was a near-total gut job and included moving walls, windows, hallways, and bathrooms, as well as installing a brand-new kitchen, bathrooms, floors, and more. They were with us every step of the way, from the initial concept design to the very end. A 100% dedicated onsite project manager ensured that everything went as smoothly as possible.

A few years after that project, we hired BOWA again to renovate our basement. Once again, this was a huge, slab-to-ceiling project, and they did a great job. Most recently, we expanded the basement, which involved digging out a brand-new room under our property! This was a complex job that required substantial outside engineering consultation, and once again, BOWA made it feel seamless and easy.

Where BOWA really stands out, in my experience, is their post-job customer service. Once you become part of the BOWA family, they are there for you, standing behind their work 100%. Over the years, we've hired and consulted with them many times for both large and small projects. If they make a mistake, they own it and get it fixed quickly, no matter the cost to them. They are also great for smaller projects, from installing new toilets to replacing ceiling fans.

BOWA might not always be the cheapest option, but their pricing is reasonable for this area and is very transparent. It's worth paying for the peace of mind that 1) the job will be done right and as quickly as possible, and 2) they will stand behind their work for years to come. I definitely recommend these guys!

Our experience with BOWA involving extensive renovations and repairs on our newly purchased home was extraordinary from the design phase to the finished work. Each individual was highly knowledgeable, competent and responsive. The designer was very talented and responsive to our requests. The on-site manager in particular was excellent to work with and communicated progress on a daily basis. He was meticulous with protecting floors, doorways and walls, and particularly the new cabinets and countertops. The subcontractors’ work was very high quality. The projected completion date was met several days early despite a few unexpected setbacks. We could not imagine a better experience with a general contractor.

Today BOWA completed a 12-week renovation of our kitchen, a bathroom and family room, and we having nothing but the highest praise for the BOWA team -- our experience was exceptional and the result is spectacular. We could not be happier. Each step in the process, from conceptual discussion, to design and construction was handled professionally and with transparency. Steve was our project leader and from the day we met him, we felt very comfortable trusting him with our home. Steve and Sherrie Crane, our expert designer, proved to be careful listeners and helped us realize a design that exceeded our greatest expectations. Tom Johnston was our Project Manager, and he was on site every day from 7am to whatever time work wrapped up on a given day. He never missed a day, and he oversaw every detail of the demolition and construction and finishes as if it were his home. Tom was really the glue that held everything together effortlessly. Colin Sonnenday, BOWA's VP of Production, was regularly on site, too, to ensure all cylinders were firing smoothly, and making sure all the moving parts meshed on time.

We were delighted with how easy it was to communicate with the team; they weren't just responsive -- they anticipated issues and did a host of things that probably were not in the original design to ensure every detail met their high standards. We knew what was going on day-by-day thanks to weekly meetings with Colin and Tom. The skilled trades that BOWA brings on site are simply the best, all masters in their area.

We stayed in the house during most of the renovation, and the production team and construction crew were always friendly and respectful of our space.

It was a great experience and we would work with BOWA again without a doubt, and we recommend them to anyone without reservation. Any significant renovation is stressful and complex, but BOWA could not have done more to get the job done on time, on budget and to perfection.

BOWA was fantastic! We hired them to renovate our 1911 townhouse kitchen after an unfortunate flooding incident bumped up our original renovation timeline. They did an absolute superb job making sure that all of our concerns about dealing with a historic home were addressed in a timely and thorough manner. We thought there was no way we could get a decent amount of storage in such a small space – BOWA proved us completely wrong and now we have a kitchen that we love and can’t get enough of.

BOWA did a major remodel for us in our apartment at the Watergate. They did a fantastic job. They finished on schedule, under budget, and the final result is spectacular!

5 stars is not enough: I cannot heap enough praise on BOWA! We hired BOWA to renovate my childhood home, so expectations (and emotions) were high. BOWA delivered at every step. The quality of the work is impeccable, and the quality of the relationships we made with our production manager Elizabeth Maughan and our project manager Peppe Walker were unparalleled. Elizabeth is a talented, smart, confident leader who was with us every step of the way. From thorough, honest email and phone communication to hands-on site visits every week, we felt fully supported and cared for as we watched our dream renovation become reality. Peppe was the best - he was on-site all day every day for months, fulfilling BOWA's promise that we would "enjoy" our renovation. I did not miss a single day of work or moment of sleep worrying about what was going on, as Peppe expertly oversaw it all. Peppe is also a talented carpenter with his own expertise and so I knew he was managing not only the logistics, but had a careful eye out for flawless workmanship. He handled all the subcontractors and the finished product is perfection thanks to Peppe. Thank you Peppe and Elizabeth!!! We are so glad to be part of the BOWA family.

We highly recommend BOWA for home renovation projects. This was our second project and we had such a wonderful experience working with Jim Greenzweig, our project manager, that we knew we had to request him for this job. BOWA was able to deliver, and we quickly remembered why Jim was crucial to a seamless experience. Jim was there every day and tackled issues that arose in our old home and found solutions that fit our needs. He has an ability to see a construction plan and know the right items to engage the client on to confirm the details. They may look right on paper or from a decision perspective but when you are in the field, perspective may change. He did a fabulous job bringing these items to our attention and working with us throughout the whole process to ensure we were happy. BOWA's quality workmanship, professionalism, and certainty are unmatched. They finished just a few days past the target completion date, a significant improvement compared to other contractors. Throughout the project, they prioritized minimizing disruptions and went above and beyond to keep the house clean. Choose BOWA and, if possible, request Jim as your project manager for a stress-free experience.

I have never regretted using BOWA for an extensive home renovation 12 years ago and relying on them ever since for follow-up customer service. They are efficient, reliable, and highly trained.

Our house was originally built in 1909, with many additions, and the original house is the most durable and beautiful. We were looking for a builder who was able to work with old houses and could match the addition to the original. We found a house that BOWA had renovated and they did a seamless job with that one so we knew they were capable of doing a seamless renovation on our house as well.

Besides the beauty of the construction, what we appreciated most was the efficiency with which the project was done. We honestly believe that our site manager is a genius in time management, craftsmanship, and his overall vision. I think the entire BOWA family agrees. BOWA promised that they would have everything in place so that once we broke ground, all would move quickly, and we really appreciated it. The time start-to-finish was essential and BOWA did not let us down.

The BOWA team provides outstanding work from start to finish. They delivered an outstanding and creative design and showed attention to every detail. They were clear about timelines and provided a weekly roadmap for the work once it commenced. The onsite team was incredibly courteous and attentive. Throughout the process, BOWA exuded seemingly indefatigable determination to get every aspect of the project just right.

The team and the Projector Leader, Kristin Ikenson, kept my husband and me apprised of time lines, costs and the search for materials and appliances throughout the process. She, along with other team members walked us through the design with graphics and photos and kept us up-to-date on orders and progress of the renovation. Living in a condominium has different rules that BOWA is aware of and adheres to with ease. The finished project has made our condo more current and up-to-date and pleases us immensely.

Great experience with BOWA. We selected them after talking to four or five home renovation companies and loved their 'up front' approach. Initially we thought we needed actual additions but on working with the amazing BOWA design team it was determined we had the square footage to do the renovations we wanted and the additions were not needed. That immediately saved us a lot of money. The design team are incredible. They listen to your ideas and come up with beautiful and unique solutions for a range of budgets. By the time we signed both contracts (ground floor then upstairs) we knew we were within 5% of the final cost, and despite a couple of surprises on the first renovation of the ground floor, we did not go over budget or over those final estimates. BOWA is high quality and does not cut corners. They give you a 'critical completion' date and they stick to it. Even when things happen that are out of their hands, for example our selected appliances not showing up for 14 months, BOWA offered several options for a solution and organized temporary appliances when we said we still wanted the originally chosen appliances so we had a functional kitchen until our own appliances arrived. Fantastic communication and weekly updates meant everyone was always on the same page at all times. Two really truly positive experiences with high quality work that we know will last for decades. My family has used BOWA for many years now but this was the first time I have personally used them. They did an outstanding job replacing my warped hardwood floors with beautiful marble. BOWA did a whole house renovation for me over 10 years ago. Recently, I had a problem with a faucet purchased during the renovation and reached out to BOWA to see if they had record of the purchase. When I reached out, I described myself as a "former client" seeking assistance. BOWA quickly responded with, " You are NOT a former client! Once a client; always a client!" They quickly solved my problem (not easy since they had to dig through old paper files). Over the years, BOWA has been wonderful with follow up and to provide us with homeowner guidance in our renovated home. We have used BOWA for three major renovation/new addition projects over the past 27 years. In each instance their performance in every aspect of the process has simply been world class. Their guidance during the design phase allows busy clients to achieve a truly inspiring design in a fraction of the time one would normally expect. Their performance during construction is professional, timely, flexible and minimizes the impact of construction on the homeowner, no matter how large and complex the project. The quality of their subcontractors and the finished product is, in our experience, simply unparalleled. In a complex project, communication between the builder and the homeowner on some items will always be less than perfect. When this occurs, items are always resolved pleasantly and quickly in the homeowner's favor, almost always at no additional charge. On one such recent change, I told the project manager that two mirror frames BOWA had installed in a new bath seemed alright to me. His response was, "Please speak with your wife. We want you and her to LOVE them years after we finish." The swapped them out at no charge. She and I love our new frames and the entire bath! Their work is of truly enduring quality. Jim Collins' "Built to Last" was published the same year after BOWA completely renovated our kitchen in 1994; our kitchen looks like it was renovated 4 or 5 years ago. Every time I walk through any of the many BOWA built or renovated spaces in our home, I simply smile at how much I still love it. Finally, BOWA stands behind its work, You cannot go through three major projects even with a world class builder without some problem ultimately arising. Where this has happened and it even appeared there might have been a problem in how the original work was done, they have simply erred on the side of the homeowner and fixed it under warranty without protest or additional charge. Is BOWA the least expensive residential builder in Northern Virginia. Of course not, Is the return on the investment from working with BOWA far ahead of any other builder with whom we have worked. Absolutely; by a very wide margin!

I found With BOWA the price they quoted was the price we paid all elements of construction were consistent with the high-quality we wanted in our home products were delivered and installed on time and I was always kept aware of minor changes in the schedule completion good quality check procedures were used

In construction management professionalism during the job at attention to any detail even after it is completed makes for a pleasant experience and I would recommend anyone in the greater Washington area do use them before considering anyone else

We recently upgraded our basement from a space for young children to romp and play to an entirely different experience for entertaining our family and friends. With BOWA's experience and guidance, they helped us understand our wants and envision our dreams for this new family entertaining space. They proved to be a great partner for this endeavor and we greatly appreciate their attention to detail, amazing quality of work, and the care they showed us during the construction phase.

BOWA was outstanding to work with and I can say this having worked with several different contractors over the years. Hands down the best. We live on Capitol Hill and they remodeled our basement and reconnected it to the upstairs. They managed the project extremely well and were neat in their work. Before starting we were presented with a timeline of the project and at the end of each week they would update us as to where they stood. They went about a week over their projected 6 week timeline. They didn't start the project until we had made all design decisions and had tiles/fixtures in hand, so there were no delays. They discovered some fire damage during the renovation which added additional work, but they still finished within a week of their projected timeline. And for that they were unnecessarily apologetic. We lived in the house during the renovation and it wasn't a big deal. They cleaned up at the end of each day and never left debris around. One day I even came home and found one of the guys dusting my bike! And for a triathlete and avid cyclist this was awesome. They did a lot of built ins for us and their carpentry work was top notch! Absolutely, would use them again in a second.

Having recently completed my third major BOWA project, I whole-heartedly recommend this team. They are a pleasure to work with and make the process both positive and enjoyable. I appreciated so many aspects of working with BOWA, such as easy and regular communication, beautiful craftsmanship and amazing post-project support. If you are thinking about remodeling, do yourself a favor and call BOWA.

There is no one I trust more than BOWA. They helped us evaluate properties prior to purchase, then did a partial knock down and complete new build on top of an existing basement. This was a complicated project and it was in good hands. BOWA is the best combination of professional and personal. Everyone we worked with from design to selections, carpenters to project managers, showed a level of care and quality that is hard to find in the construction industry. I will continue to use BOWA for any project large or small.

You can probably find cheaper, but you are buying superior quality work and services, timeliness, and professional workers you trust. So often you hear about construction crews moving on to different jobs if there is a slowdown and how difficult is to get them come back to finish the job needless extending project completion. Not BOWA; your site manager is 100% dedicated to your project until full completion before being able to move on to another job so they have incentive to finish your project in a timely manner. I could go on about the quality, professionalism and etc, but you get the idea. Don't take the risk with another company.

Did a great job on this major condo renovation. On time, on budget. Work done beautifully and professionally. Project designer extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Worked hand in hand with our designer. Overall, made a difficult project almost enjoyable. Would definitely recommend, and use again.

Very positive experience. Yes, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for, as the saying goes. Weekly meetings kept us knowing exactly what to expect at all times. Workmen arrived promptly every day at 7am. They were professional and courteous at all times. A designated project manager was on site at all times so I didn't need to be home to wait or supervise. Project managers Tom, Joel and Franze were excellent as was Daniel, the carpenter. We loved working with these talented people. We definitely recommend BOWA for your remodeling projects.

BOWA remodeled our kitchen. The original plan was to remove and replace. With consulting, we realized there was a better way with some structural changes. The end result was a beautiful kitchen my family will enjoy for many years! The outcome exceeded our expectations. The workmanship and attention to detail is first rate. BOWA completely transformed the main floor of our home, helping us say goodbye to a dark, tired, and dated living area -- and hello to a bright, cheerful, open floor plan. Our primary objective had been to create a more functional kitchen, with additional sinks, ample counter space, updated cabinets, and better appliances. We had initially thought to enlarge the kitchen by moving the front wall of the home outward, and we accordingly consulted several remodeling contractors. BOWA was the only contractor to tell us the significant potential downsides of that plan, and the BOWA design team came up with a much better idea that involved switching the location of the dining room and the kitchen and then bumping out the side wall of the house, not the front. The result is a lovely dining room with large bay window and an adjacent living room that's open to the kitchen. The new kitchen is a chef's dream, which I can truly say because I am a certified chef! The large skylights over the island provide natural light that fully illuminates the workspace, even on a cloudy day. The cabinets have many built-in features that make organizing easy. One of the best amenities in our new area is a casual dining area that was created by installing a countertop peninsula between the kitchen and living room. We also love having multiple sinks and double ovens, which enable us to easily prepare several dishes at the same time. In summary, we are extremely pleased with the beauty and functionality of our new living space. Many kudos to Bobby, who managed the design process for us.

As for the construction process, BOWA assigned a first-rate construction manager named Alex, who arrived at our house early each day to ensure that appropriate progress was made and that quality remained high. Other members of the team (Steve and Ken) met with us each week to review progress, outline next steps, and answer any questions. They were also always thinking about ways to minimize the disruption of our lives caused by the construction. Our project was started in the coldest part of the winter, and with much of our home open to the elements at that time, we could have been extremely cold. But Alex came up with the brilliant idea of constructing a temporary wall so that the other areas of our home remained warm and cozy.

We heartily recommend BOWA if you are looking for a high-quality and frustration-free remodeling experience.

We contracted with BOWA for a major addition to our home. The project required the dismantling and eventual reconstruction of a deck; extensive excavation; complicated architectural design, engineering and landscaping considerations, including a glassed in solarium and studio for computer and photographic work; cabinets and contemporary features, including ambient heat, remotely controlled window blinds, audio-visual capacity and wireless systems both in the studio and connecting additionally to a newly BOWA designed and constructed home theater in an adjacent room.

The entire project was essentially completed on time and budget to our satisfaction.

Two attributes of BOWA project management warranting recognition:

Customer Relations/Project Management: We were involved in every step in the planning and the development of a critical path for construction -- followed up by periodic reviews. The contractors were all most professional in their work -- the best of the respective trades. Security was never an issue. At one time we were actually gone for almost three weeks during mid-construction. Not only was the home secure, but at one-point the BOWA project supervisor sent photos daily by e-mail for review during their laying of a patterned tile floor.

Follow-up: BOWA maintains virtually an on-going personal relationship -- and has recommended contractors or tradesmen for us on occasion when we needed other work for simple home maintenance projects, etc.

With BOWA as a partner, you have a partner just not for the renovation or the job for which you hired them - whether it be a whole house or a partial- but you also have them in the years to come. Because if there are any questions, referrals needed, or additional work to be done, BOWA is there as a partner as you go forward. It's almost like a warranty for life.

My parents suffered a house fire in June 2012 and were able to finally move back in to their home a few weeks ago. I'm based in Nashville, and my parents are in Northern Virginia, so I wasn't able to personally witness the day-to-day process of my parent's rebuild, however I heard about it daily.

Words can't really describe how devastating the fire was to my parents. It wasn't just the loss of their belongings, it was the fact that everyone who was supposed to be "helping" my parents (insurance companies and public adjusters) were just terrible...until Tim Burch and his team at BOWA stepped in. The words "Tim is the only person in this process we feel like we can trust" are words I heard on several occasions. His entire team was very professional, did all of the work promised (and then some) and really treated my parents with the respect and courtesy they deserve. And the end result, of course, was fantastic. My parents are very happy with their "new" house.

Here is my advice if you are thinking about doing a reasonably significant remodeling job or building a home. Hire BOWA. Others may bid a little less, but you get so much more with BOWA that you are actually way ahead in the end.

We have used BOWA for two projects at our house. They are true professionals – their advocacy, knowledge, expertise and ability to be our guide was unlike anyone else we have worked with.

Our first project was a Design/Build of our basement remodel. The design phase was a lot of fun and working with the BOWA professional design team yielded exactly what we were looking for. The implementation and on-site BOWA staff was better than we could have expected. Their expertise and foresight to make suggestions and tweak the design a bit here and there generated a fantastic basement finish. Our collaboration with their design teams, and then evolving that design with the implementation team was just great – and in the BOWA world everything is open book so no surprises etc.

The second project was unscheduled – due to ice damming from a winter storm, we had an enormous amount of water damage on all three floors of the house. We called BOWA in a state of panic. They came over as close to immediately as one could do. Not only did they do great and timely work, they were able to negotiate with our insurance company to procure a much better financial result than we would have gotten without their help.

Lastly, the BOWA after-care team is amazing. They take care of any issues or requests as it pertains to our house maintenance or small projects. In fact, they entire team is practically part of the family. I emphatically recommend BOWA – it will be the best decision you make for your home, your family, and your peace of mind.
