We had our dryer serviced by Tim, very courteous and professional. He ran into problems due to a heavy clog in our line. We were one spark away from a fire. So, thank you. I also overheard Tim talking with his manager/support and I was impressed with how he was directed and guided through the issues he had. Good and respectful team. Thank you. They were able to come out same day. The tech, Travis, was kind, courteous, and knowledgeable! This was our second time using A Step in Time and we will continue to use them every year!

10/10 recommend. I was in need of a last minute inspection due to an inspection contingency and closing schedule and they bent over backwards to accommodate my clients' timeline. As a Realtor, I greatly appreciate their professionalism, ability to honor my military's clients budget for the re-inspection, and their communication. Highly Recommend and will be using them again for any structural inspections.

This is not to say anything negative about the personality of the technician who came out, he was very pleasant, but I was expecting more than a nice guy. I have an insert in my fireplace, and even in their advertising, they say they inspect all around, sides and back of the woodstove insert. In order to do that, they must remove the facing that covers the connection - which is very easy to do. This guy only shone his flashlight where I burn the wood, didn't even look at connection to see if it needed patching to keep smoke out of my house. Then he got on roof and shone flashlight down chimney, took a few pictures quickly, and said it'd be $49 for inspection! Didn't clean the chimney - said it didn't need it. I do burn very clean and have a stainless steel liner, but it had been two years since last cleaning, and I burn heavy in the winter! I think the guy was pressed for time and didn't want to bother. I am refusing to pay the $49 for "inspection" because I did not receive a thorough inspection, and I can get a true inspection from a very reputable and local company for FREE! I keep getting texts and emails from the owner about future work by them, they're obviously computer generated... he has yet to respond to my emails to him personally stating exactly what I'm stating here. Hopefully he'll see this review...

Their idea of a level 2 video chimney inspection is a cell phone tied to a line. A company that has been around for many years, you would think they would have the appropriate video equipment to do a detailed inspection on a chimney system thats 113 years old. would not recommend them to anybody.

Jeff and Siah arrived on time and worked diligently all day cleaning dryer vents and installing protective cages in a condominium building. They were polite, courteous and careful inside resident's homes and made appropriate recommendations. Provided a follow up plan for other areas to be addressed. Highly recommend this company.

I called A Step in Time for my chimney cleaning and inspection after 20+ years of inactivity in using it. Their guy Daniel came over, cleaned and inspected it, and found that my chimney's exterior was rusted through and needed maintenance right away. He got me the best deal he could offer, and when my custom-made covers were ready, was quick and careful in installing them, and was always professional and cheerful to deal with. And the company itself worked with me and my work schedule, willing to install it without my presence and arrange a convenient time to render final payment so that they could get it in place ahead of the wet and chilly weather that headed our way. I am very glad for their help in getting my chimney ready for Christmas, and an extra thank you to Daniel for his job well done!

Was recommended by family member. And not disappointed. Frank came in and went over everything. Didn't try to "sell" me anything, showed me what I need now and for future. Took pictures and went over them with me. Had a new employee with him and he to seem like he wanted to learn and help. Customer service from both was top notch. In today's world everyone trying to "get one over on ya". Didn't feel that at all. When I have the budget for repairs will be done by you all. Thanks

I do not often take the time to review a company but I have to stop and do it for this one. I have been a repeat customer of A Step In Time since 2015 and I highly recommend their services. Frank is our regular maintenance technician and it is always a pleasure to have him stop by. He is generally early for our appointment, is a great communicator, and has exceptional work ethic. He even wins over my dog --who is usually standoffish towards visitors. It seems difficult these days to find a business with reasonable prices, who will give you quality service, and will stand behind their work--- A Step In Time is one of those businesses.

Had water leaking in the house through the mortar in the fireplace. After numerous repairs and additional trips water is still leaking through the mortar. Wife called to speak to the owner but he had one of his helpers call back. Very unprofessional. Stay far away from this company. They know how to say you need word done but have no idea what they are doing. Repeat...stay away from this company.

I had scheduled and chimney inspection for a client, But when I arrived at the house, I realized I left the keys at home, an hour away. When I called to tell them my mistake, I was sure they were going to be mad as the te h was already on the way. Instead, I got a cheerful voice telling me she was sorry ideas having a bad day, and proceeded to tell me a story to try to make my day better. We rescheduled the apt and was off to a better day. Frank was actually able to come by early. He was thorough in his inspection and cleaning, showing me both before and after photos. He made smart recommendations on repairs based on conditions he saw and further documented in photos. He wasn't pushy or forceful at all. He showed me the facts, showed me the pictures, discussed the risks of not making repairs and we came to an agreement. Look forward to having him out again to make the repairs and extend the life of my fireplace!

Hired them to replace the flashing around my chimney before conducting the cap repairs. He was honest told me the flashing was good, it just needed to be revealed before the chimney repairs were done. Saved me over a grand in repairs.

Amazing service!!! From receptionist to the technician, the service was great. I call them on Tuesday after another chimney company canceled on me last minute. The receptionist was so kind and understanding, she squeezed me in for an appointment the next day. Mike the technician came out, took care of everything. James checked our stainless chimney for previous leaks and incorrect install done by another company. He reworked and sealed everything. He explained what was done and took pictures. Very nice job!

Recently purchased a home that we removed the wood burning insert to convert back to a regular fireplace. Terry our technician had a job on his hands since it hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time, he did a great job, had it inspected as well and he found some minor issues. Will have a yearly cleaning now for sure, definitely a fire hazard, so glad it’s done.

The first visit Jeffery and Mario did everything in their power to remove the animals from the fireplace but after numerous attempts to get a live squirrel out so they could remove the dead ones they had to refer me to a specialist for the animal removal. They sent two more guys the next day to put my fireplace damper back on and the rain cap back on. And, did an inspection. They explained the repairs in detail that need to be done. I wish I could remember the names. Sorry. These guys are nothing but professionals and they care about their customers! Thanks for all you did. This was my 1st time using “A Step in Time Chimney Sweep” and their service technician that came out to inspect my house was very professional and performed a thorough inspection. They say you never get a second chance to make a 1st impressions. “Highly -Quality Work”

The technician (Austin) was early, very efficient, polite and informative. He was thorough and honest with the inspection. I look forward to working with the company and will request the same technician when we get the necessary repairs completed.

The chimney was as is when we bought the home, it turned out the chimney was "capped" with a very thin piece of sheet metal that was letting water in and all sorts of other things. Everything was explained and photographed/emailed to me (genius!), the gentlemen that arrived were all friendly and certainly tolerated my questions. Everyone was ready to work. Dillon handled the inspection, with Jeff and Noland doing the actual repairs - very pleased with the quality of work and grateful for the suggestions given to improve our experience. Everyone was exactly on time and I even had a few concerns addressed over the phone a week before my appointment. Work was done in the Richmond/Henrico area, just using the VA Beach address that was on the service report. Thanks again, everyone!

Did an inspection for me over the weekend. Arrived early, after calling to confirm okay. Very professional, pleasant, and helpful! Will definitely use them again!

I recently had A Step In Time Chimney Sweep come inspect the chimney in our 1940s home. Jeffrey conducted the inspection and then went through several pictures and explaining work that he would recommend be done right away and other items which could present issues down the road but not as time sensitive. He quoted me fees for the various services and repairs on the spot and was knowledgeable about his work. The company is expanding in the Richmond area and I would recommend calling them. Other companies never returned my calls, emails.

I requested a chimney inspection and cleaning. The technicians spent 5 minutes looking at my chimney and 20 minutes in the truck writing up a report stating that they wanted $6,000 for a whole new chimney. The inspection consisted of shining a flashlight into my fireplace and climbing up on the roof to take pictures of the chimney cap. Nothing was removed to inspect. He refused to clean my chimney. I will be getting a second opinion.

I used A Step in Time for years not just for chimney cleaning but also for replacement of chimney cap with a stainless steel one and replacement of one of the ceramic panels in the fireplace box. They do quality work at reasonable prices.

We hired them to clean our fireplace. They took a short time to inspect it, and did not clean it. For that we paid $89. We had a coupon for 1/2 off an inspection which I would have used but in the switch to them only inspecting and not cleaning I forgot I had that coupon as I didn’t plan to only have an inspection. I emailed them several times post ‘inspection’ and have yet to receive a response. They left me with a list of $3000 of work I need done. Since no response to emails we decided to go with another company at 1/3 the cost.

Also they just need to schedule time to replace the bolt on the face place of the insert.

The crew that came was great. Very thorough and professional. They explained what they were doing and the problems they found very well. The prices for their services are also very reasonable. I cannot recommend them enough.

Back in 2014 I hired this company to clean our chimney in Virginia Beach . They gave us the bad news that we would need to change the liner in our chimney and a new cap because it was rusted through and could cause a fire. They offered to do the work for around $6k. We didn’t use the fireplace often and asked them to just cap it top and bottom. We paid and they capped it. We recently decided to convert to a gas fireplace and today I ripped out the fireplace and liner. I found no holes, no broken sections. I was impressed with how good the condition of the liner was. I wish I had hired them to replace the liner back then so I could sue! I hired them once and they scammed me right away. Avoid this company. Please don’t let them take advantage of you. I am reporting this to the BBB and will be sharing my story on every site I can find.

I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to both look through your records and respond. I appreciate your answer and my feelings would have been different if that was the conversation I had at the time. The chase cover had some material painted on it that confused the inspector and myself. There was certainly some visible surface rust and at the time it was ~25 years old. Your explanation may have changed my mind about capping it, but would have made me feel like I was dealing with an honest company. Unfortunately at the time this information wasn’t presented this way and left a bitter taste. I understand when someone says “the unit is really old and I see surface rust. That could mean much bigger problems and it’s risky for you to go forward.” That allows me to make a reasonable call. I was instead left with the impression that I was lucky my house hadn’t already caught fire. After seeing that the piping was in excellent shape I feel like I was being cornered unnecessarily. Every business has to make money but I prefer to be treated as you did in your response and not how I was treated at the time. I hope you understand my position.

They are the best. Always so professional and extremely kind. This company always gives back to the community. The owner Ray is a true Gem and one of a kind. You can’t get better than a Step in Time!!

Update.. Had them out again and frank came an was amazing. Love using these guys can't wait for the work.... recently had my chimney cleaned and inspected by A Step in Time,Virginia Beach and I was so impressed with the young man that did the job.
