I had five solar companies give me quotes for installing a system on my rental property. Virtue Solar was the cheapest and they went above and beyond to meet my needs. I was very impressed with them!

I enjoyed working with the Virtue Solar team from my initial contact and through the entire installation process. And following installation, they (Peter, Matt and Kim) have responded to my questions just as quickly and thoughtfully as they did during the process. All members are very knowledgeable and able to explain details very well. They kept me informed of the processes and timing as well as scheduling the work needed. I am very happy with the new production and backup system and especially when my grid power goes out! The battery is very quiet, I really don't hear it at all; its performance happens seamlessly when the grid is down. What a relief to sit back and enjoy the day.

Virtue Solar installed a large solar panel system on my home In Charlottesville. Matt and his team did great work, were efficient and were able to answer all questions and concerns along the way. We received a very competitive price through the Solarize Charlottesville program, and took advantage of all the tax incentives offered at the time. We are pleased with the results and have had basically no electric bill since installing the panels due to the net metering program with Dominion. I highly recommend this company!

Virtue Solar installed a 12.7kW solar energy system at our home in October 2023. Everything about our experience with Virtue, from initial inspection to final installation, was perfect. We were connected with Virtue Solar through the Solarize Virginia project and were satisfied from start to finish. The initial contact was quick and friendly. The assessment was realistic and they didn't oversell our production capability. Installation was smooth and they handled all the contact with the electrical coop and county permits timely. When our panels were up and running, we hit a snag on actually being able to use the app and get our data from the equipment. Virtue Solar worked with us well above and beyond any customer service I have experienced anywhere lately with numerous and lengthy attempts to problem solve (and, ultimately, finding a solution).The response and help were superlative. I highly recommend them.

We had Virtue Solar put our solar panels a year ago. They are running great and have over a 200 credit and counting to go into winter. They were very helpful throughout the process. I will use them again if I was doing another system.

It was the right choice to select Virtue Solar for the installation of our solar panels. From the the pre-visit, to installation, to turning on the system, they answered all our questions and gave us expert guidance on choices. It is obvious that they care about the quality of their work and the quality of the equipment used. When we see examples of installations around town, we know Virtue was the best choice.

Virtue Solar was an absolute joy to work with. They provided a clear estimate with high quality materials and transparent generation estimates. They answered all of my questions from start to finish. The contract was straightforward and easy to understand. We did have a delay of a few months between contract and install (what isn't backed up these days?), but they kept me in the loop and even started ahead of their expected estimate. Everyone from estimation through inspection were friendly and easy to work with. They all appeared to genuinely enjoy what they were doing, which gives me the impression that they enjoy working for Virtue. I would hire them again if I had more roof space!

Virtue solar
Virtue Solar installed a 13.6 kw system at our house this past December. They installed the 26 panels on our metal roof without having to put any holes in the roof. We were very pleased with the installation and the crew. Peter Malander worked us up the quote, keeping us informed of the progress of the county and electric company permits. Matt Powers and Deven Barkley did a great job on the installation. Deven even took the time to help me understand the Enlighten App and the data it captured. We would highly recommend Virtue Solar!

Virtue Solar installed an 8.64kW photovoltaic system (grid-tied) on a ground mount for us in December of 2022. We found them through the Solarize Charlottesville program.

What they did right
Creative and smart approach to available site area and topography to optimize siting and orientation of ground mount. We traded a little extra distance from the house to situate the panels in a flatter area where we could optimize the orientation to due South. Great idea that worked well.
Always listened well to my preferences and concerns, including working collaboratively with me to route the 200ft long power trench from ground mount around and across sensitive areas. They were mindful of my preferences for where to bring power into the house and where to situate necessary hardware in our basement.
Highly responsive to questions and concerns.
Every representative of Virtue solar was courteous and pleasant to work with.
They earned my trust – I feel this is a company of high integrity.

What they did poorly
Compacting the soil back into the power trench. This created areas where soil directly above the trench quickly settled to create a deep rut. Virtue returned to address the settled areas but I would not say I was 100% satisfied with this particular aspect of the installation. In fairness to Virtue, I could have asked them to come back a second time to make it perfect (and I believe they would have come), but I decided to do it myself.

If I could give 4.5 stars overall that is I think a fair assessment of my experience. If I needed further solar work, I would certainly consider Virtue again.

Everyone I interacted with was courteous and knowledgeable. Everything I was told or promised was delivered as stated. The Virtue Team was A++.

They offered the lower (price per kW) of the two bids I received and were great about answering my questions and accurately setting my expectations. This company is professional start to finish. We found them knowledgeable, honest, enjoyable and we didn’t have to clean up one thing at end of each day. They made this new experience easy as they took care of every detail from permitting to the final turn on. We were collecting solar 1 week after installation was completed and are now addicted to watch the app!

I could not recommend them more highly. They submitted the lowest bid (of three) on my project and then proceeded to give me an accurate timetable that they followed through to completion. The workmanship was excellent and they were all very pleasant to be around. Matt Powers runs a great company.

Virtue Solar nailed our solar project. We installed a 14.5kw system with their help. Spec'ed it, came in the lowest bid but handled everything really well. Had some normal software issues with the technology (not a big deal), but they worked with the manufacturer to fix it no problem. Nothing negative to say - just great work at a fantastic price. Really happy with all of it.

I recommend Virtue, without reservation, as the best of all the local solar companies I've dealt with, by far. Virtue's Matt Powers has the technical expertise to do custom work, and he has attracted a crew that makes installing the normal grid-tied system look not just easy, but fun.

The system design was perfect. Our price was in line with what's expected for systems in Virginia. The work was completed on schedule. Matt dealt with all the approvals and permits.

Since hiring Virtue and replacing our oil based heating system with ductless heat pumps, we are now living fossil-fuel free in an early 19th century home. We drive on sunshine too. Our system operates beautifully and we couldn't be happier.

Here are more details if you're interested:

We originally installed a 10.9kW grid-tied system in 2012 with another company, and a few years later wanted to add more solar production capacity. At the time the laws didn't support adding solar, so we asked several local companies if they would design an adjunct off-grid system for us. Matt was the only one of four companies to answer that call, and he came out twice to discuss his design (we're at the far end of his territory, so this was not trivial). We didn't go for his system because it was just too expensive (no fault of Matt's), but instead started working to help change the laws in VA. In Feb of 2020, when the residential grid-tied cap on AC return was raised, we put out requests to max out our grid tied system to the legal limit of 15kW AC return.

I asked several local companies to design and quote the additional solar, and from every one other than Virtue I got a sales pitch. None of the solar salespeople was able to answer technical questions without going back to their designers, and our original company wouldn't even specify the manufacturers of the components they'd use, because it was their policy to use the cheapest available at the time of the installation, and that was always changing! This very popular local company quoted me a price that was fully 30% over what the cost should have been (per Watt). So watch out folks, and do your homework. Or call Virtue.

Matt delivered a simple and elegant design at a good price and was able to answer all of my questions (to be honest they weren't THAT technical, but my impression is that he does know every detail of every component of the systems he installs).

In addition, we had been told by every company who came out to see our old system that it was deficient in several regards and definitely not up to code. Even the old installer admitted it, but they weren't willing to do much about it, since it had passed the local inspection when installed -- except tell me that they'd invalidate our service warranty if any other company would work on the system. So we were "between a rock and a hard place" with no other installer offering any solution or assistance to this problem. Enter Matt of Virtue. He went way above and beyond to help us, by including the necessary upgrades in his new system, without any additional (noticeable) cost. And he agreed that Virtue would be our solar maintenance company for both the new and old systems.

When we had a tiny glitch in the performance of our new inverter a couple months after installation, he was there within hours to check it out, and he fixed it on the spot. Matt has also responded very promptly and totally professionally to every question I've sent him over email.

In short, in my experience, Virtue is head and shoulders above the rest -- a very well-named business.

I got quotes from about 5 solar companies when I was looking to get panels installed. Virtue Solar stood out because they not only had a great price, but they responded to any form of communication very quickly, the tech I worked with for a quote, Peter, was very knowledgeable and professional, and the owner, Matt, clearly seemed passionate about his business.

Peter worked with me, sending multiple quotes so that I could see all of my options for power output, price, etc. He never seemed to mind when I asked for yet another quote. He was also very courteous whenever he needed to enter our home for something. He was even polite to our cat!

Through the whole pre-installation and installation process Virtue was great at communicating, so I never had any moments of wondering what was next or what the time frame might be.

Overall, Virtue Solar is exactly what I wanted out of a solar installation company, and I absolutely recommend them to anyone considering getting solar panels.

We were extremely happy working with Virtue Solar. I started planning with them in early 2020. I lost some steam once the pandemic started, but finally we closed the deal. I looked at several solar providers but chose Virtue because they we low pressure, responsive, honest and local. The team that did the 10KW system install in June were very respectful and did great work. I even worked with Matt after everything was complete to get an upgrade to better understand our energy consumption. Overall I'm pleased that after many years of thinking about it, I have solar, and, after speaking with other folks who have used other companies, I'm happy that we went with Virtue Solar. I highly recommend this Virtue!

In December, we turned on the 13.3 kW ground mount solar array that Virtue installed on our property, and it has been nothing but easy, breezy clean green power. Everything about the system has worked perfectly since install and is performing exactly as Matt explained it would. With the mild temperatures and sunny days over the last two months, we haven't had an electricity bill since February (and even that bill was 1/3rd the size of our usual February bill). Matt and his team are incredibly knowledgeable in every aspect of solar installation, from design to construction and beyond. When there were hiccups in the process (as there always are, with any contracting work), Matt's expertise and connections in the industry smoothed things over quickly and kept us on schedule. Couldn't ask for a smarter, more responsible, or harder working company -- and the value is second to none as well! 5/5, would absolutely hire again.

I'll echo the comments of other reviews on this site. Matt, Aron, Peter and their entire team are outstanding. We installed our system in March 2020 and have happily watched it outproduce our expectations. We researched the market heavily and Matt very patiently answered every single one of our questions. His cost was very competitive, his strategy was rock solid, and our early results are irrefutable. Aron did a terrific job leading the installation team and, in our case, helped us combine some trenching work with a new barn we were building. The team moved quickly, we never had to contend with the county and REC, disruption to our daily lives was minimal, and we hit the shoulder season at a good point. Take a serious look at Virtue Solar - they are unique in the market and their delivery is right on target!

I had a 13.6 kWh system put in last summer. It has been great! Matt and his team did a great job installing and telling what I should expect. The system performs flawlessly. Now that spring is here and we are having longer days, I average 80+ kWh per day on sunny days and didn’t have a bill last month. The system really produces a lot of power and even during the winter, and I have electric heat, my averages bill was over 2/3 less than previous years. We are very pleased with the install, Matt’s knowledge, and the system overall.

These guys are awesome! The owner, Matt is knowledgeable, easy to work with, and does a great job explaining the process and educating the client about solar. Virtues's pricing is competitive. The installation crew is professional and efficient. We are very pleased with the entire process and are glad we chose Matt and Virtue Solar. Our system is exceeding our expectations for output and looks.

Matt was great to work with. He's knowledgeable, of course, but also able to explain everything so we understood. He did a very helpful consultation on our options, so we felt our final choice was a well-informed one. We were getting estimates from several companies, and Matt was by far the most responsive to questions and requests for information. Top marks for service, value, friendliness, competence, timeliness...everything!

Love that Matt, the owner is onsite doing installation. That usually makes all the difference. He beat the price of other companies. He was communicative and kept us up to date every step of the way but was not overwhelming in his communications.

Matt and his team completed a residential solar install on our house in Northern Virginia in July of 2017 and we could not be more pleased. Virtue Solar recently installed some new solar panels on our home and upgraded our old battery-backup system. They designed the system to integrate with our existing equipment and maximize our solar capacity. They upgraded some outdated equipment, and now both systems work together seamlessly! Virtue Solar just completed the installation of 16 solar panels on our house. It was a complicated job as the only surface we could use was a membrane roof over an addition on an old house. The roofing company discouraged penetrating the membrane to secure the panels which meant the option of installing the panels with ballast to hold them down. Then we had the issue of whether the roof would hold the weight of ballast and a 100 year snow load. I'm happy to say Virtue Solar solved both issues and completed the job on time, on budget and did a great job. We are very happy with the work and highly recommend Virtue Solar.
