We've been in a business relationship with Tony Van Oyen Builders for many, many years. They are very professional and continue to exceed our expectations. They have always been a great company to work with and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them in the future.

After working on our custom ranch plan ourselves, my wife and I chose to use Tony Van Oyen Builder to make our custom home plan a reality.
Joe worked with us a lot in the beginning, even coming to some vacant land parcels to help verify viability of building our plan, before we found a parcel that we loved.
Jill was great to work with when it came to our selections. We had a lot of items pre-selected, but she was still great with organizing the finishes for the builder and sub-contractors.
John and Jim did a great job on the construction side of things, answering any questions that we had along the way (as did Joe and Jill).
Their sub-contractors were very good to work with also. We worked with them to do our own sub-contracting and DIY where possible too.
There were a few mistakes and hiccups along the way. Nothing that we could say resulted in something not turning out with a great end result.
At the 1 year warranty, there were some minor items that weren't addressed as well as we would have liked, but we were happy to have so few items that even needed to be addressed.
Overall, it was a great experience working TVOB.

Absolutely ! I have very fond memories of Tony ! He of course built our custom ranch on an out lot I owned. I had met with 3 other builders before I heard about Van Oyen Builders. I wasn’t that impressed with the other 3. When I met Tony he was not only very personable but I could tell he really knew his business. My whole lot is on a downward slope and building a custom ranch with a walkout basement intimidated the other builders. Not Tony he was so casual about it. He won my confidence in not only his abilities but his personality. He was a great man that I surely miss. It was a real pleasure working with Tony throughout the entire project. I was very pleased at the quality of my custom ranch he built and he also met the completion date . From my knowledge the family has done a fantastic job of carrying on his legacy. Tony would be very Proud.

My husband & I built our dream home w/ the Van oyen family in 2019. We flew in from TX and spent 2 weeks driving around w/ a realtor & we were getting discouraged. Nothing we saw was up to our standards, within our budget & in a desirable community. If we found a home that checked a few boxes it came with a side of wood paneling and linuoleum floors :/ At the end of our trip we saw a little sign on a vacant lot & called it on a whim. It was Tony Van Oyen . After talking w/ Jill , their sales representative we both felt they were worth checking out . Jill suggested we tour a home they were finishing in a nearby city called Dexter. When we saw the house we were really blown away. I knew when I walked through it that this was what I had envisioned. The workmanship, the floor plan, the grade of materials, the location….they checked every single box. We sat down w/ Jill and Joe & gave them our deposit the same day. It was that easy, because nobody else even came close to delivering what we saw at their pricing. & we saw so many houses.
The van oyens helped us create a house that fit the needs of our family. What I loved about building a custom home was that I had freedom in the areas that mattered to me aesthetically. I did not have to settle for builder grade appliances, basic light fixtures, and hardware that wasn’t my style. We even got a lightning allowance and they installed whatever we wanted. You will not get this kind of freedom with a corporate builder. I can honestly say I moved into my home and did not need to change a single thing. It has been 4 years & I can say confidently that using the van oyen family as our builder was one of THE best decisions we have ever made on the biggest purchase we will probably ever make. Was EasY and stress free !?? No. Things did come up, &. that’s normal. But we never felt alone or left in the dark when an issue did arise and that’s what you want when selecting a builder. The van oyens keep their word, honor EVERYTHING in your contract and warranty ( even if it wasn’t their fault ;) They CARE about their customers & I think their dad would be very proud.

My husband and I have recently completed a new home construction project with Tony Van Oyen Builders and could not be happier! They were very transparent throughout the entire process; from our initial meeting, to the proposal and quoting process, throughout construction, to handover. It is important to have very clear communication as you will be dealing with the builder for many months. I must say that Joe and his family are the best at this! We had open lines of communication at all times to ensure there were no deviations in the budget. The home came in on time and on budget, and the build quality is amazing. Five stars.

We built our first home with Tony Van Oyen in 2018. We picked a custom home plan and then modified it to work for our family and budget. Joe was fabulous to work with, patient, knowledgeable, flexible, and passionate about building a high quality home that our family would love. I am thankful that we decided to work with a local family owned company that cares about the families they are working with.

FIVE YEARS LATER REVIEW:
First of all, we can't say enough good things about our choosing to have Tony Van Oyen Builders construct our home over 5 years ago. In a nutshell, this was an extremely pleasant and exciting building experience for us.
Now having lived in our home for 5+ years (Traditional Open Ranch with Full Wrap-around Porch), we can attest to the energy efficiency, the quality, and the beauty of this home! Our energy bills are surprisingly low compared to our previous home that was more square feet, and we are comfortable in all seasons. The house feels very "tight" and is very energy efficient.
Our floor plan is open and so functional. I can't even tell you how many family gatherings we have had in our Greatroom/Kitchen space, and hours of enjoyment spent on our wrap-around porch! The cedar, 3-season room, is another gem about this home that we absolutely enjoy.
Everything from the exterior to the interior is holding up beautifully, and our home feels and operates just like it did when we moved in. We love this home and would choose Van Oyen Builders again in a second! Connie & Mike

We just finished our build and moved into our new home June 2023. Tony Van Oyen Builders made the entire process easy and enjoyable. Joe was so great with communication, and we were able to customize our plan to fit our family's needs. We couldn't be happier with our new home and love the neighborhood. We highly recommend the company, the Van Oyen family are wonderful and pay attention to every detail.

The Van Oyen's built our home in 2018-19 based off of a design from a different architect. They took the plans and modified them to fit a unique (and steep!) piece of ravine land, worked with us within a specific budget, built the home in about 10 months, and 4 years later, we continue to be so happy with our home. They were easy to work with across the build process and responsive to some minor warranty issues within the year after we moved in. Our utility bills are impressively low, which I attribute the to quality of the build. Highly recommend this family team!

We built our home with Van Oyens about 3 years ago. 3 years later and we are still very happy with our home. To this day I’m able to contact Joe with questions regarding our home and he always answers and leads me in the right direction. If we ever built again, I would go right back to Van Oyens. It was so nice working with a small family business and not a huge corporation. I felt that we were able to customize our home more to our needs and wants because of this.

I can’t say enough about this builder’s professionalism. Our home was build by the Van Oyen team back in the 90s and this year when we needed to find out some information about it, Joe really went out of his way to help us find it! Detached condo, custom home build at Hidden Lake Meadows in South Lyon, Michigan. Despite Covid related conditions, most expectations were met on a timely basis. In post-completion warranty phase now and follow up activities are being handled properly. Quality builder with proven track-record. I would recommend Van Oyen to other potential custom home buyers.

We cannot thank Tony Van Oyen Builders enough for our beautiful new home! We looked for almost six months at different builders and constantly felt like we were hearing the same sales pitch and getting pressured into deposits without receiving all the information and answers to our basic questions. We were getting discouraged with the process and losing hope when by chance we met the Van Oyen’s and the rest is history. During our first meeting, all of our big ticket questions were answered and it was nice to receive a clear understanding of what was included with our home and what would be considered an upgrade. Joe was even kind enough to stake out the lot so we could have a visual of how the site would be developed and walked through it with us on a Sunday….no other builder offered to do this for us! Throughout the build process, the entire team was very communicative and responded almost immediately to our calls or emails. The quality of the construction throughout our home speaks for itself and their customer service is above and beyond even after close.

We built a house ten years ago with Tony Van Oyen Builders. This house was built very well and we have had very few issues. Two weeks ago, we had a few windows that had seal problems so I called Van Oyen Builders to see if there was a warranty on them. Joe called me right back and provided the window manufacturer and the company that installed them. Unfortunately the window company was out of business but I appreciated the quick response. We will be getting the repairs done by the company that installed the windows.
While building homes will not always be perfect, Tony Van Oyen builders was very easy to work with. We loved that we could customize blue prints and add features of our home that we wanted. Ten years later and we are still so happy with our house. Thank you!

Van Oyen built our house in 2013, they were great to work with through the whole process. Its been 8 years now and the quality of the construction is much better than you'll get with the "major" home building companies. Exterior was all 2x6 construction, better insulation and sealing (top level Energy Star builds). Comparing heating bills with co-workers with similar size homes and age of house, our heating is almost half the price and we keep the temperature a few degrees warmer. If I was to ever build another house, there is no doubt that my preference would be to go with Van Oyen again.

Joe was quite responsive to my request for a much needed estimate from his company. The response from Joe and his company was the same day! Highly recommended for the professionalism and response time!

After six months of searching my wife and I located a new home that was just completed, after putting down a deposit we found that the land was built too close by law to the adjacent swamp, after brining this to the builders attention he assured us that he had friends that could get pass this issue and that he could install a French drain to address the water issue that left the grass leading to the walkout like a swamp itself. We cancelled the purchase and decided to take a six month break from our search.

Though apprehensive we were lead to Tony Van Oyen Builders a few weeks later. After first speaking with Jill we felt at ease, she was very pleasant as if were corresponding with a relative and very knowledgeable at her job. After setting up a meeting with John who oversees the construction, he too felt like a member of the family, we spoke on general terms before even talking about construction ( no high pressure sales tactics or over the top sales pitches that can’t be met). We subsequently met Ellen the matriarch, Joe and Jim all of whom are the most down the earth family you could ever want to meet.

My wife and I met with Jill and Joe on numerous occasions through the construction process, making amendments to our wish list and never once received any attitude towards our request. We also can’t thank Jill enough for helping match up the correct color pallet. Though we are great at decorating a house, it’s a little different matching up stone, siding, brick , trim grout color etc. Jill was a rock-star.

Fast forward to our perfect home, we moved in and have nothing but praise for the Tony Van Oyen family, everyone absolutely loves our home . I have had other friends and colleagues who have built homes and have had ongoing issues after the build with no resolve , we can honestly say we have not had any issues. There were two concerns a few weeks in, but Joe came out within 15 minutes and explained what I was looking at and put our minds at ease. All we can say to the Tony Van Oyen family is; "Thank you for the experience and for being the nice, compassionate and caring people that you are, this is what business and the world could be". We would love to build again in the future, but at the same time the thought of ever going through anyone else but Tony Van Oyen Builders is frightening. We highly recommend Tony Van Oyen Builders, you will definitely not be disappointed with their work and professionalism .

We had our home built by the Van Oyens and we are glad that we selected them in the construction of our new home. From the beginning, they were very down-to-earth and easy to get along with. Jill and Joe were the ones we primarily communicated with and they were great to work with. They care how the end result turns out and they think about things that they would want in their own homes. I think that makes a difference when you are building a custom home. Their trades and contractors were also very professional when they came to work at the house and answered any questions that we had. It is inevitable that during any project, there may be some hiccups, but having a good team to work with makes tackling them so much easier. Once we moved in, any first year issues we have had thus far have been addressed quickly by Joe himself or a trusted delegate. We would not hesitate to have them build a house for us again and we thank them for their hard work and patience in answering our questions. I had the pleasure of working with Van Oyen Builders throughout the entire renovation project of a commercial building. Not only were the employees of Van Oyen Builders very attentive, professional, knowledgeable, and helpful through the process, their contractors were all wonderful to work with as well. I could not be more happy with the finished project and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a builder to work with!

Our final walk-through was conducted on 10/18/18. We were very happy with our experience with Van Oyen Builders.They were very accommodating when I asked to make changes to the elevation plan. They also were very flexible and willing to work with us when there was "confusion" on ordering of the the kitchen cabinets. They went over and above to include some additional work on the final grading. Overall, this was our first experience in building a new home. We had heard the horror stories about bad experiences with builders, but thankfully we selected a first rate company to build our new home. I would not hesitate to recommend Van Oyen to anyone considering building a new home.

Hiring Van Oyen to build our home was the worst decision I have ever made. The final product simply did not match what they were advertising. Ever since they broke ground I would find errors that I had to bring to their attention. Sloppy carpentry/paint, drafty and leaky windows (they installed our great room window backwards causing water to leak in, took them months to figure it out..photos are attached) very little attention to detail, and oversights galore. Instead of taking their time to do things right, they rushed to get the house built and and here we are 2 years later and they still have not fixed all the problems left behind. Ever since we moved in we’ve been dealing with issues and headaches. It's clear they weren’t very interested in doing the job right..just get it done and move onto the next one.

As time went on, their true colors began to show. I found myself having to remind Joe over and over about the outstanding issues (that were brought to his attention a while ago)…and even when the repairs are arranged some of them did not get done correctly. Poor organization and communication when it comes to the warranty repairs.

One bright spot we have to point out…Jill was a pleasure to work with, she was terrific during the sales and selection process ..but as far as the quality of work and craftsmanship of our home, very disappointing. Before hiring them we did plenty of walkthroughs, research, and spoke to references, but again…the final product did not match what they advertised.

Van Oyen may be cheaper than most builders, but you get what you pay for..including all the drama and headaches down the road. Don’t fall for any discounts they offer to lure you into signing a contract..take your time and ask for a variety of references.

Bottom line…if you have high expectations for building a home, look elsewhere.

UPDATE 12-7

After first posting this review we heard from Joe almost immediately..not to reconcile things with us..but instead try and bully us to take the review down. He tried intimidating us with an illegal gag contract, and even had his lawyer contact me. Once he realized his phony bully tactics wouldnt work, he made an attempt to work with us (or pretended to). All we asked is that he finished the warranty repairs required of them and we'd reconsider our review...but instead of cooperating, his arrogance got in the way again. He tried again to have us sign an illegal "gag" agreement to silence us from leaving any written or verbal statements about the company. Ofcourse we declined, and since then Joe has went MIA and our repair still havent been completed. In short, Joe wanted us to comply with some illegal gag clause..while at the same time not holding themselves responsible for completing the warranty repairs...

If you’re looking for a family of experienced, down-to-earth, honest professionals to build your home, look no more! Joe, John, Jim, Ellen and Jill provided us with an excellent experience from start to finish. See below for a copy of the email we sent following our build.

Five months later after moving in, we have had only one issue, which was EXTREMELY minor. Joe responded within 15 minutes with a plan to fix it, and it was resolved within a week. The Van Oyens work to ensure your satisfaction even after you move in, including outside of the standard Homeowner’s Warranty checkpoints.

As we've mentioned, Jill's quick and thorough responses from the very start was one of the primary reasons we selected you as our builder, and this continued by all of you throughout the build. We often forgot that you were building other houses, as you made us feel like we were your only and most important clients.

Finally, we recognize that this was a highly custom build, and as such, took additional effort and attention. We've learned through this process that others have not been so fortunate to have so few issues when building a home. I credit our success to your honest, personable and moral character; you really are a stand-up family (I include Jill in your "family!"). You really delivered for us, and we very much appreciate it.

Tony Van Oyen Builders built our home. It was our second new construction. They were great to work with, especially John and Ellen. John had no problem meeting us on site for questions. We made a few changes during the construction. They were very accommodating. It really seemed like they wanted to make sure that we were happy with the home. We had a couple of minor warranty issues. They were addressed very promptly. We would diffidently build with them again.

Before we met with Joe in the sales office to get the details about building, we were just gonna buy a "fixer upper", but Joe made the plan very clear and the "basic" package (within our budget) that they offered was more than we had expected! We then met with Jill on many decisions about the exterior and interior choices for our home and she did a great job keeping us within our budget and letting us know where we could make some upgrades that mattered. Tony VanOyen Builders offered us a contact for our construction loan and the withdraw process throughout the build was easy and painless. All the contractors did their jobs in an excellent and timely matter. The timeline for the build was kept well. At the end of the build, besides having a beautiful new home, Tony VanOyen Builders also gave us our energy rating which exceeded what our previous home was and that was 1/2 the size and built in 2004. When my wife and I started looking at new home construction, we found Arbors of Lyon in Lyon Township. As there were a number of homes under construction, we were able to check out materials and workmanship. Impressed by what we saw, we ended up contracting Van Oyen to build us our dream house. Three years into it and we are more than impressed. Not a creak in the floors, solid construction, impressive workmanship in plumbing, wiring, woodworking.and overall selections of materials. They were quick to respond to any of our questions or concerns. Even three years after build, they are always available A very good experience for us. This was our first "build it new" home and while we were anxious about the unknowns, the Van Oyens helped us through the entire process. Trust is absolutely key in building a home. You can trust these guys !!

We had our home built in 2012/2013 by Tony Van Oyen. Every step of the process from customizing the blueprint to the color decisions to personal preferences in the utilities were well organized and handled with professionalism. Even thye last minute changes we requested were handled well.

Having been in our house for over a year now we are very happy with how everything turned out as well as the warranty and attention we were given after the move in date. Calls and e-mails are always returned in a timely manner and working with this team is easy.

The fit and finish of this house is well done and the quality of the build shows in our heating/AC bills, almost 25% less than what we paid for our 1,200 sqft apartment. If you are considering building with Tony Van Oyen get the facts, sit down with their team, and ask others who have built with them, you won't be disappointed.

Let me start by saying that what you see isn't always what you get. We met with the Van Oyens several times before signing a contract. They were polite, cordial, and very accomodating in the initial stages of our meetings. Once we signed a contract their true colors came out.

After we signed the contract we became a very low priority, and what was once politeness turned into just plain rudeness. The quality of work that we were shown on some of their spec homes was not reciprocated in ours. Multiple mistakes were made by their subcontractors, including additionals that we paid for were overlooked or completed incorrectly. When we brought the items to their attention they were very confrontational and disrespectful.

I could go on and on with the list of mistakes that were made and list of lies that were told, but i will leave it at this. If you are looking in the South Lyon area do yourselves a favor, stop into any one of the Van Oyen community developments and stop and talk to the neighbors. Most of my neighbors share the same issues and frustrations that we experienced.

Had we stopped and talked to a few of the neighbors in our current neighborhood, we would have passed on building with Van Oyen,

Cheap materials, bold faced lies, shoddy workmanship, and the warranty is a JOKE.
