From 2008 to 2020, while living in Newport News, VA, we had Sturdevant complete 4 major projects for us.

They remodel our master bathroom, built a retaining wall 4 ft high by 300 ft long in our front yard, a 6 ft high by 25 ft long retaining wall in our back yard, and built a 35 ft long by 24 ft wide by 10 ft high Pergola over our deck.

Sturdevant had us involved in every step of the process. Planning, site survey, selection of various types of materials, verifying materials as they were delivered, walk thru with the Forman, and final walk thru with the Project Manager.

Every project started with a home visit and quickly moved to their main office to sit and go over all the blueprints and available materials. At this time, we were able to select materials of various cost, to get the look and value that we wanted. Never once was we pressured to use high dollar materials.

We were completely satisfied with the entire process, quality of work. We even talked to the workers, and they were able to answer questions that we asked during construction. One thing that really mad us happy was the ability to do some of the work to save money. For example, we did all the demo in our bathroom and hauled it off. This saved us over $500 in labor.

We moved to Oswego NY in 2021. I wish they had a company up in Oswego NY, as I would use them for everything we have done to our new house. We really miss they level of professionalism.

I would never recommend working with Sturdevant Construction due to lack of integrity and professionalism, and inefficient management. The high level issues are outlined below, in addition to a summary of the issues experienced.

Issues Overview:
-Project was delayed one month
-Staff as promised was not delivered
-Requirements for construction were not delivered on time: permit, dumpster, port-a-john
-Unnecessary upsell which was couched as a requirement in order to get the permit approved
-Unprofessional and hostile communication, to include lack of communication unless money was required

Issue Summary:
We contacted and hired Sturdevant Construction for an extensive home remodel, which included two bathrooms, master suite, and wall removal. The sales process was impressive, and this is the ONLY positive experience we had with Sturdevant. The owner, Naham, had a vision for the remodel and it aligned with our desired state. Once the contract was signed we did not hear from Sturdevant unless they wanted money.

During the contract signing, we were expressly told the job would start December 2, 2018. We were also told that the job would be performed by Sturdevant employees, not subcontractors. Both of these were false. The job did not officially start until January 2, 2019 and was subbed out. That being said, the subcontractor did an amazing job, however we did not appreciate the untruths that were delivered during contract signing.

Not only did the job start a month late, but the dumpster - which is required for demolition - did not arrive until a week later. And the port-a-john did not arrive until January 17th; two weeks after the job actually started. These tasks were the responsibility of Sturdevant and were clearly not executed effectively.

In addition to the delayed start, Sturdevant called on 12/19/18 to tell us we were required to add a deck onto our remodel in order to pass permitting. At no point was it mentioned that a railing would be sufficient to pass inspection, and a $17k change order was submitted as we were led to believe there was no other option. However, after reviewing the permit (received after the holidays) we spoke with the permitting office to discuss the decking requirement. The permit officer informed us that a railing would be sufficient and a deck was not required.

When we contacted Sturdevant about the conversation with the permitting office, the office manager, Crystal Proper, was rude and accused of “going behind her back” instead of calling Sturdevant. When pointedly asked about the requirement of the deck again, Crystal was very unprofessional, turning the conversation into a personal attack rather then a business transaction, and rushed off the phone without an answer. It took a week of ongoing emails and calls to Crystal to receive any communication back from Sturdevant.

The follow-on communication regarding the requirement of the deck was from Naham, who aggressively tried to pressure us into keeping the deck. It was explained to Naham that the initial discussion led us to believe the deck was required, which was why we signed, and once we found out it was no longer required we wanted it removed. Naham continued to try to sell the deck, however backed off when we held firm. We were then charged 15% to descope in spite of need for the upsell being unnecessary. At that time we decided not to pursue more aggressive action as we wanted the remodel to be completed and cease further communications with Sturdevant.

At no point through the remaining project did Sturdevant reach out to check on progress, unless it was time for a payment. Upon the conclusion of the project a brief conversation with Crystal was laced with passive aggressive tones in an effort to smooth over any ill will. Sturdevant wanted to send their project lead to take final photos and inspect our home; when he had NO involvement in any of the project execution. When we informed Crystal this was not necessary, she immediately became defensive and argumentative.

I was trying to wait until this project was completed prior to posting but enough is enough. Started Jan 7th, 11 weeks in and Only have 1 restroom completed out of 2. They quoted 4-6 weeks. If you are ok with the unprofessional and no sense of urgency then go with this company by all means. They don’t read the prints and do as they wish. You have to make sure it’s correct cuz what’s on the prints and what they install is different. Then general contractor will try and talk you out of something. They may come one day and don’t show up for 2 days later. If they do show up it wont be a full work day. I wish I would of read the reviews prior to hiring this company.
I have so many more projects to complete in my house and I won’t be using them or recommending them to anyone!!
NOT BBB ACCREDITED!!!

Talk a good game but project management was poor and the sub-contractors that were used were inferior - cheapest they could find, I imagine. Many costly mistakes caused by lousy internal communication. We kept track of work days and there was so little progress at one point we requested a change of site manager - workers that sat on the front steps, smoked and stayed on cell phones. Neighbors commented there was no sense of urgency when they had promised a complete job in time for our daughter's wedding. Three month project was finally completed nine months later - we had to put guests in hotels instead of our home. Had the nerve to deny any warranty requests because we withheld a small final payment because of incomplete and inferior work that needed to be fixed immediately by other competent contractors. Would never recommend this company and hope the few employees that seemed to care about doing things right (but were overridden) have gone elsewhere. Sorry - they really never tried to make anything right.

Sturdevant Construction is an exceptional company. They replaced my windows and siding. Not only did they spend a lot of time educating me on the materials and process, they showed me ways to get rebates and save money. I am impressed with their quick service and superior quality that they provide. The price that was quoted was the price to get the job done. I highly recommend Sturdevant Construction.

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
