Smith and Robertson is the Best of the Best! I have built several custom homes from scratch over my lifetime and the building experience with Smith and Robertson was outstanding from start to finish. We started with simple drawing concepts and requirements and ended with a masterpiece that meets my family's needs exactly as envisioned. Certain elements of the experience standout: Personal attention, contractors who listen, superb site management and supervisors with the owner/customer always welcome on site to discuss the ongoing progress and detail and a constant sense that they will always aim to please and make it right, S&R has some of the best and most experienced in-house carpenters I have ever seen. They specialize in custom finishing and if you choose, they are expert at Timberframe design and implementation. Many friends and colleagues have built with other builders and by the end of the job, things are often somewhat "strained" relationship wise. In contrast, by the end of my build, I am good friends with the owners of S&R and several of their crew. In summary, if you are looking for a top-quality home building experience, you won't do better than Smith and Roberston.

We completed construction of our home with Smith & Robertson in December 2023. The experience was amazing. We had previously built a home in Frisco, TX, and it took 3+ years to complete construction due to bad contractors. Our experience with S&R was easy and fast - they completed the house 10 months from foundation completion. Just to set expectations, we did spend many months on architecture, design, and Albemarle County plan approvals. Once started, every day there were multiple crews onsite working. The quality and communication from Eric, Dallas, and team was top notch. Working with Glenn and Jim to complete the plan and architecture was very smooth and helped us get the house we wanted. S&R also provided resources for Interior Design and Landscaping. I recommend S&R to anyone building a house in the area. They have been at this for a long time, are trustworthy, and build great houses.

We love our home that was built by Smith and Robertson! This includes the design process , the project management of Dan Lawson, the site coordinator Charlie Bell and the talents of Glenn Tucker.

We began our journey with Smith & Robertson in 2004 with plans to build a sturdy but "not so big" home. I walked into their office without an appointment with the intention of asking some preliminary questions but ended up with an at length discussion with the architect and owner, Glenn Robertson. That positive first impression carried through the entire project. The S&R family focused on the design and build of our home as if it was their largest and only project. Glenn & Ron helped us with the site planning (which moved more than once) to make sure we had the best views and included the location of our barn and pool. Glenn helped with finding both a landscape architect and interior designer to help us articulate and create the vision of our future home.
All this effort was done while there we were living & working in New Jersey over 300 miles away. Our project manager Dan was instrumental in keeping us informed and on track for all the countless decisions that had to be made along the way. Our home was on time and on budget! Dan continued to be our point person if we had any questions about our home once we actually were living in it. There was no question too small even to this day :)
We have now lived in our home for almost 5 years and still marvel at what S&R created for us. This past Spring, we decided to make our screen porch a 4-season room, and the S&R team said "no problem" and made that wish come true too.
We could not recommend a better building contractor and are forever grateful to have Glenn, Ron, Dan (Jim, Ernie, Shawn, Bryce).

This past October my wife and I celebrated 4 years in our home. We would have a rating higher than 5 stars which is due to Dan Lawson who was the project manager for Smith and Robertson during our home build. Dan's attention to detail, commitment to service and laser focus on excellence are clearly evident in all aspects of our home. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and continued to follow up with us to address any question that we had. This was 4th home build and Dan made it the best experience, by a huge margin.

We recently completed building our home with Smith & Robertson and thoroughly enjoyed every facet of the process. To begin the process, before we purchased the property, and before we had even chosen them as our builder, they visited the site with us to provide input on the potential obstacles we would face building on the rocky, steep, heavily forested mountain site. They patiently walked through how they would approach clearing and preparing the site and assured us they could build our dream home.

After deciding they were right for us, the next step was helping turn our floor plan and exterior inspiration pic’s into a workable design. Their design team is amazing - they blew us away with the first rendering. After a few minor edits, we were ready to start.

As great as the design process was, the build process was even better. Robby, our PM was extremely organized, had great attention to detail, and maintained contact throughout the build (we were across the state, so not able to visit as often as we would have liked). Drawing on his vast experience, he had great input into our decision making and was a great manager of the contractors and S&R employees, helping us stay on budget and finishing on schedule. Their craftsmen are some of the very best in the industry.

Seeing our dreams turn into our home while working with a group of people we truly enjoyed working with was so much better than we ever expected. Our home is beautiful! We’ve received so many complements from friends and neighbors not only on the esthetically beautiful exterior and interior but also on the design and construction details.

Would we go through the process again, with them? Absolutely! In fact, the only disappointment in the entire process was when it was finished and we knew that even though we had made wonderful friends at Smith & Robertson we would not be seeing them as regularly as we had.

We entered the construction process with unrealistic expectations and somehow Smith and Robertson exceeded every one of them! The personal touch they extended at every step of the way made the whole process so much fun and resulted in the perfect home with everything we could ever hope for. They became much more than our contractor, they became our friends and continue to check in to be sure our dream home is still a dream.

If I could give more than five stars, I would. Working with Smith and Robertson to build our house was a really great experience. We started with a completely blank slate; no water, no electric, and a just a bunch of ideas. We loved how collaborative the design process was with them! We had nearly every idea you could think of some of which included: using non-toxic materials, local blacksmith work, reclaimed wood, and many other custom features… so basically anything but straightforward. They made our dream (house) come true.

The team they have amassed are absolute craftsmen and genuinely lovely people. Their selection of quality people goes beyond just the S&R crew; they’ve vetted subcontractors through their many years of working in the area so you can be certain that if they are on your project, they’re going to do great work. They make certain that whatever is being done is done right. They are creative, talented, and outgoing problem solvers which make them the perfect choice for custom home builders. They stand by their work and are always available if you need anything.

I really could go on and on. We are so lucky to have a house built by the team at Smith and Robertson. They’ve built the home that now safely houses our babies and I couldn’t be more grateful. If you’re on the fence if they’re right for the job, meet them. They pride themselves on their quality work and that’s exactly what you’ll get. Quality work and quality people.

We are so fortunate to have found this amazing team at Smith and Robertson. We live across the country and have been able to build the home of our dreams without any hitch. Every person in this entire organization goes above and beyond. They are quality driven, mindful of the budget, expedient in their delivery and just so nice and supportive. Smith & Robertson, Inc. has built 2 homes for us - one was our Bed and Breakfast, The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm and the other was our private home - both in western Albemarle County. When it came time to build our private home we wanted no one but Smith & Robertson to design and build it because our experience with them had been outstanding when they built the Inn for us. They are good listeners, they pay attention to your wants and needs and are able to offer appropriate choices, they hire only skilled, expert craftsmen and they stay in touch about the financial picture throughout the project. We've been living in our Smith and Robertson built Timberpeg home for nearly 10 years and have loved every minute of it. The high ceilings and large windows give us plenty of natural light and views of the nature that surrounds us.
