Smallwood Renovations recently built a new deck on our home and they were great to work with. They communicated throughout the whole process and were quick to answer all of my questions. The crew did an amazing job on the construction and the quality and care they put into building the deck definitely shows! I also enjoyed working with John and appreciated his knowledge and communication.

This is our second time using Smallwood Renovations. We had a back deck put on and was very pleased with the company and the work they did. We looked no further for doing our front porch and new that we would use Smallwood Renovations. We called to set an appointment and the sales Rep Maddy was sent out to see us and talk about our front porch. She went over all options and helped us design the porch that would match the new stone siding and rest of the house. Maddy was very pleasant and easy to work with. We have now made a friend with Maddy and will definitely go with her for any future home improvements. Also Thanks to Keith the owner for a great team who came out to install our front porch. We look forward to many years enjoying our front porch.

We enjoyed working with Smallwood. They were very easy to work with and all workers and office personnel were very friendly and accommodating. The men on our crew we were extremely efficient and excellent craftsmen. They removed our old deck in less than thirty minutes and constructed our new absolutely beautiful 14 by 22 foot deck in only three and a half workdays. They took care not to damage our landscaping and the detail and craftsmanship in their work was very impressive. Even the lumber for our substructure was of superior quality. And when they were finished, they power washed the deck. When looking at other decks in the neighborhood it is obvious that our Smallwood deck is a step above. If I coud give more stars I would. The crew that they sent to build our new deck was amazing.They arrived every morninng at 7am and worked until 5pm. and I mean worked. On the last day they were here they worked until dark to get the job done. 5 Stars – A Truly Exceptional Experience from Start to Finish

After a long history of disappointing contractor experiences marked by poor communication and subpar work, working with Smallwood Renovations was a breath of fresh air. From the very beginning, this company impressed us with their professionalism, reliability, and genuine care for both the project and the customer experience.
Our sales manager, Michael, came out *twice* before we even signed a contract—walking us through various material options for the deck, railings, and French door, and helping us envision how it would all fit into our space. We even changed the plan slightly after making our initial decision, and the team handled it without hesitation or hassle.
Once the project was underway, the construction manager, John, met with us personally to confirm all the details, give us a realistic timeline, and explain the permitting process with the City of Richmond. He was incredibly meticulous—especially in coordinating the installation of the new French door on our older brick home. He even brought out a door specialist *and* a mason to make sure it was done right. That level of care and planning was honestly above and beyond - and well worth it, as the final result is amazing.
Every Smallwood worker who came to our home was respectful, tidy, and diligent. We always knew what to expect, and John checked in frequently to ensure everything was on track and up to standard. When he heard us fretting about a Japanese maple we wanted to try and save, he had his workers dig it out for us, roots and all. (We transplanted it, and it's doing great!) Even after the deck was completed, the team returned to take care of a few small details—just to make sure everything was perfect.
The old saying is “measure twice, cut once,” but with Smallwood, it felt like they measured four times and *then* cut once. The finished deck is absolutely beautiful, and we’re already enjoying it—even without furniture (yet)!

I recently bought and moved into a small cottage built in 1948. Both the front door and the back door did not fit into their frames correctly after all those years. Smallwood's methodical measurements and planning, along with their excellent crew, installed new doors that fit perfectly.

Smallwood came back and replace two deck boards and fixed a gate. Great work by the two man crew and my new gate could not be better.

Smallwood Renovations sourced and installed a new custom front and storm door for our 110 year old rowhouse in Richmond.

We selected them because they are a local family owned business, and were quickly assured of their professionalism, customer service and skill to get the job done.

The process started with an at home consultation with a sales representative that lasted a couple hours. After going over all our options for both doors including a
3 windowed transom, we realized that American made ProVia doors are far more superior in quality and security than we had anticipated. They are therefore very expensive.

The Smallwood team came by to take final measurements before ordering the doors.
We were informed that our old house was a risk for lead exposure so they would need to take extra precautions. Thankfully no additional fee was charged.

Installation took two days.
The entire front door and frame exterior and interior were completed in a full day’s work.
The storm door was installed in a few hours the next day.

The doors look absolutely stunning and their build quality is impeccable. You get what you pay for. The same can be said about the craftsmanship and level of detail the Smallwood team provided during the installation process. It was a difficult job because of our quirky old house, but you would never know it looking at the end result.

Custom made replacement doors are a big investment. Smallwood Renovations made sure the job was completed seamlessly and to perfection. I highly recommend their services.

I can't say enough about Smallwood Renovations. They built us the most beautiful porch/3-season room and they were nothing short of professional in every sense of the word. John Trongone, the project manager, was absolutely GREAT! I highly recommend the entire team who all worked tirelessly through 3 major snow storms and never missed a day or a beat with the construction of our porch. They were extremely neat, cleaning everything up every evening before leaving and they were polite and respectful and their work was impeccable. Turnkey did our screened-in window enclosures and custom built us sliding doors, which turned out gorgeous and better than we expected. He spent countless hours making sure everything was exactly as we wanted. Smallwood showed up when they said they would, they worked professionally and politely, and the end project is phenomenal. We had them come out and build us a new deck from scratch and we are very pleased with the final product! They we're efficient and kept us in the loop as the project was ongoing. The only asides would be that their price point fell near the upper end of our estimates, and (probably because of their good work) they have a good number of projects so you'll have to wait a little if you're thinking about something you want asap. Would definitely recommend

Smallwood Renovations went a long way to getting our new deck built, including demolishing the old wood deck and building us a new more-easy-to-maintain Trex deck. From the beginning, our plan was laid and financing procured. We were given lots of options for our design and we are pleased with the result. The first "team" of builders made short work of the existing deck and in very cold, winter conditions proceeded with the construction of the new deck. They also had to deal with a height of the deck and preservation of the block patio underneath. I really am thankful for those men who endured frigid cold temperatures and even snow to do the job. And cleanup was done each day. The second team followed up with some vinyl siding repairs, getting the stone on the patio looking great, and even installing a handrail we requested in our garage. We had a fantastic experience working with Smallwood Renovations. From the initial sales meeting to the completion of our project, everything went smoothly. Sam visited our home, guided us through the available products, and helped us navigate pricing options. After careful consideration, we decided on a deck replacement rather than a larger enclosed deck project. Sam walked us through the different styles and colors of Trex products, and we ultimately chose a middle-of-the-road option.
Once we signed the contract, we had an onsite meeting with John, one of their expert project managers. He conducted a final walkthrough, took measurements, and communicated a clear timeline for the project. I had a 29 year old wood deck supported by 4x4's, that never felt real secure. It always had a slight sway and the older it got, the bigger the sway. The rails and balusters had become loose. Loose to the point I really didn't want my Grand-kids on the deck.

Smallwood Renovations came in and completely removed the old deck and built a new on using composite decking using 6x6 supports. No sway at all! The Rails and Balusters are now Bronze Aluminum.

The old deck looked good in it's day! But this new deck is Beautiful, Sound, Secure and very Safe.

All I need to do now is a little yard work and relay my sidewalk pavers to match the new landings.

I would recommend Smallwood Renovations to anyone. The folks I delt with were Fantastic!

We received a wonderful Christmas present this year from Smallwood Renovations. We contracted with them to complete a screened porch and a new front porch. The work was of the highest quality and the staff was wonderful to work with. Their attention to detail and dedication to our satisfaction was exceptional. I highly recommend Smallwood Renovations and we are so proud to host family over the holidays and know that we have safe, functional and beautiful additions to our home.

This review isn't on the quality of work of the company or their professionalism. Overall the sales meeting was great, but I chose not to go with them for price. It was significantly higher than 4 other contractors for comparable size, design, and materials - so much so I was almost thinking they bid to not win the work. For a 14x17 screened in porch (wood, not Trex) they quoted approx $92K - 3 times higher than the next highest bid. I'm not sure how materials/service justify $386/sq ft for an outdoor space with no plumbing, insulation, or windows, but just a warning for those going in with a budget to be aware before spending the 2 hours it takes for the sales meeting.

Smallwood Renovations is a company you can rely on to perform as promised. I'm so proud of my new deck, sliding glass door, windows replacement, and gutter system, all completed in a short period of time. I especially appreciate how Construction Manager John T. assisted me along the rocky spots to get the job done. His assistants were equally helpful. Smallwood Renovations LLC has just completed siding my home and replacing the gutters. The house looks wonderful. I am entirely pleased with the work. My high level of satisfaction was achieved by hard work and by outstanding customer service by the Construction Manager John Trangone, the Client Manager Claire Grant and by Olvin and his crew of “hermanos”. Whenever I had a question or requested changes to the work plan or to the work because the expectations were not clearly communicated or because my initial understanding of material or process changed as the job evolved I was well supported by both John and Claire. There were several instances were John was instrumental in quickly resolving problems or answering questions. Claire was excellent in getting material changes, especially a late color change in j-channel and a switch to a vent that needed to be smaller, both made positive changes to how the house looked when finished. The entire group worked well together to deliver an outstanding result. The best praise I can add is “This was money well spent!”.

I’ve been feeling quite frustrated lately with the rising costs of services, largely due to inflation and the increasing price of raw materials. It's disheartening to encounter businesses that fail to deliver on their promises or prioritize customer satisfaction.

However, my experience with Small Wood Renovation was a refreshing change! They completed our project on time and went above and beyond to ensure that my wife and I were fully satisfied, even after payment was made. The staff answered our calls promptly and professionally, and the builders and project management team were dedicated and impressive throughout the process.

This company quoted extremely high compared to other Class A contractors. They claim the reason for the high quote was due to differences in building materials and overall experience but I find it hard to believe materials can make ~$40k difference. I got four quotes for a screen porch and Smallwood came in far higher the most expensive quote. They have a lengthy sales pitch and if you leave them a poor review they will contact you repeatedly to attempt to get you to delete or amend your review. I will not be moving forward with them.

Smallwood replaced our old back door and storm door with a solid, energy efficient replacement door. The replacement door is of excellent quality and the installation went smoothly. The results are all that we hoped for. I'm happy to recommend this company.

Smallwood replaced our deck and porch with Trex decking. The salesman offered a few options and quotes and did a good job. The four-man crew spent about three weeks replacing our entire deck, porch and had additional masonry repair performed in the porch-footings. The final outcome is solid and looks great. I would recommend Smallwood. It was all a good experience.

I reached out to Smallwood renovations because there was a flyer in my mailbox mentioning 40% off deck installations. That interested me and I reached them online Aug 15th 2024. I got a call from Bridget on Aug 16th and scheduled an appointment for Aug 23rd 10AM. Like it was said in some reviews she asked if my wife will be there and whether it is important in making certain decisions and I was clear that I am good enough. Today (Aug 22nd) I got a call (went to VM) from Joey, email and text message confirming my appointment. I confirmed on text that “I’ll be home”. And the response is “Will that be both of you?” and I said “Just me”. And response back that “I apologize but we overbooked….next available times…”. If they tried to reach out to me through 3 different channels to confirm the appointment, what made them change their mind?
I think this company should change their approach in terms of husband/wife decisions together and all. It is none of their business to ask about it. We are not buying peanuts to make the decisions on the fly. And if both are working the available timings are difficult and at times you need to allow the customers to think about it. I understand that their time is valuable but that’s how the rest of the businesses work. If a free estimate is not possible, charge ahead and discount that on the contract. I am taking my business elsewhere.

They are just about finished with my new deck and screened in porch! I am beyond excited and pleased! This company is first class all the way!!!

Smallwood Renovations replaced windows and installed siding for us. The house looks brand new! The process from the first sit down or sales appointment to the last day of the install was as seamless as it could be. The admins kept is informed along the way. I would recommend them!

We are very pleased with our new deck built by Smallwood Renovations! The hard-working crew took down our old deck in a short period of time, and then built our new, high-quality, hybrid deck in just a couple of days. Bridget, Claire, and Joey in the Smallwood Renovations office were all very communicative. Years ago, SR replaced the windows in my house and we were very pleased. This month, the company replaced my wood deck and I was again very pleased. The job supervisor was great and his crew did not fool around but focused on finishing the job. Workmanship is superb - clean cuts and seams and everything nice and tight. The finished product is close to perfect in my view. They do very nice work.

Amazing work, couldn’t be happier. Smallwood Renovations not only gave our barn a much-needed facelift, but probably also extended its life by another several decades. The old T1-11 siding we used to have was deteriorating badly in the shady areas where moisture would linger, and caused some more serious rotting issues. Smallwood’s sales guy, Courtland, was extremely helpful in understanding what types of product and remodeling service were available to fix it. The crew showed up on time (!) and might’ve actually finished the job a day or two early, iirc. The end result was better than we could’ve hoped for. Highly recommended!

There is a two story deck outside of my kitchen back door. The home is more than 50 years old & the deck appeared to be original. It was time to improve.
Judging by the condition of the original deck & the importance of good quality I chose to contract Smallwood Renovations. I liked what I saw of their work on line. Basically put....It was a decision well regarded.
This is a very tightly knit organization in which it is very, very apparent that all employed by Smallwood take pride in what they deliver to their customers.
There is no shortage of material selection & all of this is explained in detail in the initial meeting.
Options are endless. To put it simply...they can do a lot of really neat stuff.
They are also willing to work out any inconveniences whether it be physical to the job, timing or even monetary. I was & still am very impressed.
Trex decking is beautiful when finished. And what really caught my attention almost more than anything else was their incredible attention to detail. All the way from the project coordinators in the office down to the construction crew in the field. Everyone of them.

Smallwood Renovations demolished my old deck and built a new one for me. I obtained 3 quotes, and they were the most affordable out of those (while still offering high quality product and service). The office staff communicated with me throughout the process and the construction crew was amazing and efficient. They did a beautiful job and I am extremely pleased.

Attaching a picture of the new deck: Most of the deck is wood, with composite (Trex) cap rails. The railings are aluminum. I plan to call them again for future projects!

Smallwood built our dream deck with pazaz. They researched the layout of our yard, advised us to move our AC unit to prevent future problems from lack of air flow, drew up the plans, pulled the permits, called to have utility lines marked and once they started building they were done in 3 days. The deck is beautiful and exactly what we planned together. We could not be happier with the process or the end result.

From the tear down to the finishing touches on the trim, access door, and care taken with my plants near the work area. In February 2024, I saw an advertisement for Smallwood Renovations for deck replacement using Trex, a man-made product that never needs staining. My deck structure was 29.5 years old with the flooring being replaced about seven years ago. That floor began to develop holes around the screws, and I knew it was time to replace the deck.
I contacted Smallwood, and a salesperson was sent to my home to review my situation and provide a quote. One thing that impressed me on that visit was the salesman said Smallwood would not install Trex products over the existing structure as it would be compromised with the removal of two deck floors. I had selected a color, but I had doubts about it. I called the office, and a person was sent to my house for me to select another color – the day before the Trex order was to be placed. Their office was 50 minutes away.
After all approvals were issued, the three-man crew started the demolition on Monday morning and the deck was completed by Wednesday afternoon. I cannot say enough great things about these men. They were constantly on the move and seemed to know each other’s next steps. They were wonderful!! Their office staff was great too!!

Smallwood just completed a large deck (20X24) with a 14X14 screen room project at our home. To say we are very happy with the finished product would be an understatement. From the first contact for estimates, to design, to build, to finalization, we were more than pleased every step of the way. The best part is that Smallwood delivered exactly what they promised, no verbal statements made to get the business and then not keeping their promises. We were told in October 2023 that project would begin Feb/Mar '24 and complete by Mar/Apr '24 and would be 4-6 weeks. Project was started end of February and completed, very professionally, on March 21st. The workmen on the job were great and were never too busy to answer questions and more importantly, to ask questions when there were details of the job that were not clearly specified in the plans.

We hired Smallwood Renovations to replace two exterior doors in our house. The team was prompt and communicative throughout the whole process, and the specialists who installed the doors did a great job, we're very happy with the results.

Smallwood did an excellent job on constructing our new deck! The office staff kept you well informed as to when Smallwood would come to start construction and if there would be any delays! The guys built us a brand new deck and front steps. They are on time, work great, did a great job. We highly recommend them to anyone.

I am beyond thrilled with the deck and ADA ramp that they built for me. John did an excellent job with the plans. But I can't begin to say enough wonderful things about EJ and his crew. They were outstanding. They were time everyday. There were helpful and attentive. Extremely pleasant. They were quick to answer every question. I am so pleased with their work. Everything turned out even better than I expected.

These guys offer a great sales pitch. They will try to get you to buy. If you get work from them, you should be aware, that they are going to charge you alot more than needed. Check other high rated contractors before you fall for Smallwood offers.

Today, I received a very stern voiced phone call from the sales representative that made the outrageously expensive offer. The one that I turned down due to other offers, that I had received, for the same work for 20 to 25 thousands dallors less. This person let me know that he needed to speak with me and that I needed to take my review down. My review and posted opinion was not fair to the Smallwood name.

That is my opinion, and I have a right to share it.

4 years ago I had Smallwood rebuild a small outdoor access porch…..This year I had the guys come to restore and renovate the large screened in porch. Elijah Zach Nick and Luke did the lions share of the work. John (the best) and Caleb came to clean and polish. I could not be more pleased. It’s amazing workmanship and the quality is outstanding. As I said 4 years ago…I highly recommend Smallwood for any of your home improvements or creations.
