Quality Masonry was responsible for the excellent tuck-pointing at St. Mary's church down the street from us. When it came to tuck-pointing the chimneys of our historic home, we asked St. Mary's who did the work and in 2016 QMC made our chimneys look brand new. Then a tree took down a couple of chimneys and we were so pleased with the work, communication, and respect for our home that we asked them to come back. Not all bricks were salvageable so they found some close older brick matches to fill the gaps for which we were very grateful. They respect and appreciate old homes. That was 2018.

The reason for this review, however, is because this year, a general contractor commented on some holes they noted in our foundation. This was an upcoming goal to have the foundation re-tuck-pointed, but it was not a priority as we ourselves only noticed a couple of weak spots. We asked the general contractor for a quote to patch the holes (they removed and replaced some wood of a different size that exposed some huge gaps). The general contractor said that the entire foundation was bad and needed to be cleared out and re-tuck-pointed and that his men were the men for the job because they'll sand blast it and fill it back up the right way.

Well, if you're at the dentist and he tells you you have a heart condition and you should have it treated, you don't stay at the dentist and have him do the whole cardiac work-up. So, of course when the general contractor said we had a problem, we called the masonry experts at QMC for their quote and opinion before diving in because even though they may cost a little more being quite a distance from Chillicothe, OH, we know they do excellent work and we have the utmost confidence in their assessment of the problem, their concern for our home, and recommendations for resolution.

Very glad we did. I've never liked a sales person more. Mr. Bowers is incredibly professional, thoughtful, thorough, and honest even when honesty neither benefited him or his company. He looked at our foundation, agreed that, indeed, there are some holes, but considering the type and softness and age of the stone, the risks of sandblasting the existing mortar and replacing it put the house and foundation at greater risk than doing nothing at all at this time. He identified the cause of the holes (the porch is moving away from the house) and explained that filling that would only fail because the porch is going to continue to settle and expand the gap. He even provided a couple of DIY solutions. There are few things more difficult than trying to tell someone that a perceived problem is not currently an actual problem and that benign neglect is the best treatment. But I'm sure glad Mr. Bowers risked "upsetting" us with the news so we could preserve our old house, hopefully for 100 years more.

I have no doubt that our general contractor could have tuck pointed our foundation "the right way." What the general contractor lacked, however, is the extensive experience with old buildings, older traditional materials, etc. I am immensely grateful for Quality Masonry Co's years of experience and continued honesty and I will continue to call them whenever our historic home requires their services... and continue to highly recommend them to others in the meantime.

Great workers do great historical restoration. They do everything from masonry, grind outs, tuck pointing, panting, power washing, and more. They have been in business for years in Marion and travel all around Ohio, PA, and In just to name a few. Highly recommend.
