Absolutely Unacceptable Workmanship - 8 Years of Problems!

I rarely leave reviews, but after 8 years, I feel compelled to share our experience with Pioneer Roofers. We had our roof installed in 2016, and honestly, the job was incredibly botched from day one. And even now, we're still finding major, fundamental flaws.

Most recently, we had new gutters put in, and the installer immediately spotted critical defects with the original roof. Turns out, there's no starter strip at the bottom edge of our roof, and the underlayment doesn't even properly extend past the drip edge. These aren't minor details; they're basic, essential components for any functional roof, and their absence is causing water to drip constantly behind our new gutters.

This discovery is just another frustrating example of their substandard work. This roof has been a headache since the beginning, adding to a long list of issues we've dealt with, including:

A huge hole right through our kitchen wall during the installation.

A giant mess left completely trashed in our laundry room that they didn't clean up for three days.

Multiple leaks throughout our house because tarps weren't properly deployed during rainstorms.

The persistent and significant problems from this roof job are just plain unacceptable. Avoid at all costs.

I needed to replace an older flat tar and paper roof with an updated material. I found there are not many roofers willing to warranty their work on flat roofs for residential houses. Several places referred me to Pioneer Roofers. I found them very professional and once scheduled the project was very efficient. They removed the existing material, resloped it for drainage, added insulation, and used PVC while flashing it properly to prevent leaks. They also worked closely with the railing company for proper blocking and support for rails. I highly recommend this company especially for flat roof work. The estimator and crew will leave you with the feeling and confidence that they know what they are doing and properly finish the project.

I recommend Pioneer Roofers for a roof replacement. Mike was timely and followed his word on the bid. Rylee was excellent and kind with scheduling. And Jose was very detailed, clean and respectful while working on the house. Other crew members were also very efficient and respectful. A few minor mistakes and miscommunications happened which are normal for a project like this, and everything was handled very professionally. Your entire crew should be proud of their conduct, and the excellent roof you installed! Thank you all!

Had a number of issues with my roof that needed resolved. Got 5 quotes but Pioneer was the one that seemed best. The crew was prompt, through and competent. When they left the job was done, area was clean and the roof was done great.

Needed some serious roof work and asked, among others, Pioneer Roofers for a bid.
He was on my short list because of high recommendations by people with roofs like mine. ( Rummer homes )
Mike showed as planned, we had several constructive discussions about tradeoffs.
He has, as part of his business, 3 dedicated crews, one each for flat roofs, standard-roofs and one for repair. People have been with him for a long time and he is proud of their skill, their performance. Something I found impressive and refreshing. Some roofers use hired crews which are not an integral part of their business.
We reached agreement on what would be done and the cost of it. They did the work in the summer of 2024, as planned, both time and cost wise, including the repair of several substantial areas of dryrot.
The work was well done, people were a pleasure to work with and highly skilled in their area of expertise.
Whereas it is true that one does not know the quality of a roofing job until 10-15 years down the road, I followed their work pretty closely and have had exposure to the good, the bad and the ugly over the last 30-40 years. Based on that experience, I would recommend Pioneer Roofers Company to people in need of roofing work, I think you will be pleased.

Pioneer was prompt, professional and the best price from 3 bids - you can't go wrong with that. The crew was polite, conscientious and highly skilled, taking care to clean up afterwards (2 days). I highly recommend making Pioneer the number one consideration for your roofing project.

Was referred to Pioneer at the suggestion of my remodeling contractor for a roof repair on my garage. They got me on the schedule within a week and completed the repair fast and efficiently. The tech was very courteous. Highly recommend.

Called them panicked about a leaking skylight last night (on a weekend, at night, in a major RAINSTORM no less) and they were at our home in less than 30 minutes. Requested no-contact per COVID19 and a high risk person living in the home. They happily obliged. In less than 20 minutes the leak was stopped and we could breath again. Very friendly. Very professional!

Worth noting that when I called, he took the call while standing in the pouring rain putting the ladder back on his truck finishing up someone else’s emergency. Honestly, best service ever!

I’ve used Pioneer Roofing for roofing inspections on home transactions I’ve made. I feel adding a qualified roofing inspections to a home inspection is very important! In my opinion a good roofing inspection is cheap insurance when making a major purchase on a home. Pioneer Roofing has exceeded my expectations with their performance and responsiveness.

My roof was damaged during a storm and started leaking. I talked to some people at work and had Pioneer Roofers recommended to me. They are a life saver, they were able to get me in the next day, work around my work schedule, and repaired the roof for a great price. Really happy with the finished work. Highly recommend.

When in my attic, I found some small leak issues with solar tubes I’d installed several years ago. I called Mike from a reference. He was very responsive, gathered the information he needed, gave me a rough quote right there. Then got back to me in a few hours with a full quote. And due to an scheduling issue, pioneer was able to get to my project in less than a week. The workmen were courteous and communicated what they planned to do as well as confirming decisions with me. I really appreciated they’re attention to detail and patience with me. I very much recommend Pioneer roofing.

I was in need of emergency roof repairs on a Saturday after noticing a roof leak damaging our bathroom ceiling. I called Pioneer Roofers, and within minutes Mike returned my call and was able to come to our home within hours to make the necessary repairs. I really appreciate the response on a weekend! If repairs had not been made when they were I would have had to replace the ceiling sheetrock, luckily Mike took care of the problem. Thanks!

I received a email from this company asking me to remove my review or they would give me a poor review online, claiming my review was false. How can a review be false if this was my experience? (original review in quotes below)
Ok, I will say that I don't know if the tech from Pioneer opened up the welded seams on the TPO roof, as I nor my seller's roofer were onsite to witness the inspection. I do know the roof did not leak until after the home inspector and roofer inspected the roof.
My frustration lies more in the home inspector that could not even identify a brand new roof, and created an atmosphere of distrust in a real estate sale. The buyer's and their agent hired Pioneer to do the inspection, which is very common in real estate transactions. I always advise buyers getting at least 2 bids if there are repairs involved. My frustration with the situation is contractors (of any trade) being asked to "inspect" a home, and then give a bid for the repairs. To me this is a conflict of interest. Now there are not a lot of companies that will give an unbiased inspection, without trying to sell a job.
In another situation, I would call Pioneer to give a bid for replacement/repairs. I was just reviewing on my and my clients personal experience.

"This company was hired by buyers to inspect the roof on a home I had listed for sale. The employee that was sent out proceeded to open up welded seams on a brand new TPO roof, and created a problem that did not exist until he stepped on the property. My sellers had to have their roofer come back to repair the damage that was done. Pioneer roofers, also gave the buyers a base estimate to fix the roof at $2400. Seemed like a conflict of interest to me, and I will not use them for real estate evaluations."

Pioneer Roofers were very responsive, quick to implement our project and, overall, a very good company to work with. Sandie was very helpful with providing project implementation details and Mike was communicative when the project needed some updates throughout the process. They were also a cost effective solution to our roofing issues.

My second time dealing with Pioneer Roofers. Still impressed. Their paperwork is thorough and clear. Bid came in at a reasonable price and in a timely manner. Work will also start in a timely manner. Highly recommend!!!!
Roof is now completed. It was scheduled quickly and completed quickly. The job is beautiful. And it was cleaned up afterward, something that doesn't always happen in the construction world. I appreciate the professionalism of this company.

We had a very difficult roofing situation: a leaking flat roof covered with a deck that was populated with a lot of big plants. We interviewed a number of roofing companies, deck companies and remodelers. The only one who understood our problems and the complexity of removing the plants, deck and roof and then replacing the whole thing was Mike Montre the owner of Pioneer Roofers. His crew of four did a fabulous job for us with a beautiful result, in spite of finding a lot of insect damage and water damage that required replacement and reinforcement of structural elements. We couldn't be happier with the outcome. His crew was a pleasure to watch work. Mike was easy to communicate with changed things as we went along to make the result just terrific.

Pioneer was able to come out on short notice, and solve a roofing issue for me in bad weather. They provided photos of the work done, which was really helpful.

Stay away from this company! My husband and I took a day off from work to have an estimate done today at 10:00 am that we scheduled a week ago. I called them at 10:00 am and they told me that the estimator didn't have us on the schedule but could make it out by 1:30 pm. They just called and told me that they don't want to start a relationship like this and that I need to go find someone else to do my roof. Highly unprofessional and annoying that they would turn it around like that rather than apologizing, owning it and rescheduling. I've never had a company do anything like that in our years of owning rentals and a construction company. STAY AWAY!!

Pioneer roofers expedited our re-roofing in timely manner even when it was the busy season for them. We were able to sell our house at 6806 N Concord Ave. shortly there after.

I have had Pioneer Roofers work on my home a couple of times. The first time was amazing and they did a beautiful job over and above what I expected! Then another section of my home had to be done several years later that was not done the first time and it was an amazing job as well the quality and the workmanship was awesome! And I can’t say enough good things about these dear workmen that gave more than what was needed to get the job done on my home. I’m so grateful for them. Micheal called after the job was completed to see if I was happy with the job. Of course I said Absolutely and was also impressed how well everything was cleaned up! I highly recommend them!

Pioneer Roofers Company worked on my grandmothers roof and did a fantastic job, overall she was very pleased. She felt the crew was very nice, and honest from the beginning to the end. Many times she said how impressed she was with the work ethic, and her roof looks beautiful. Highly recommend Pioneer Roofers for good service and top notch quality.

Overall, we had a great experience with Pioneer Roofers. I will say the estimate/scheduling part was a bit of a struggle, communication wasn’t all that great, and I had to reach out to them a couple times to find out what was happening...but they came in exponentially lower than all the others and once we were on the schedule they were INSANELY fast and did an absolutely FANTASTIC job! The crew was super polite and worked hard cleaning up their messes, even past dark. They completely replaced our roof in 2 days, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

These guys came to repair a badly leaking roof on the rental we live in. Made a huge mess, left nails and shingle bits all over the ground, didn't do the job right and had to come back to fix it. Crew was all Hispanic but the guy who interfaced with our landlord was white dude who only showed up to bid the job and then collect the check. He spotted the error and tried to climb the gutter to look without using a ladder, tore the gutter off the building and fell and just left without saying anything. Guys came back to fix errors and nobody informed us they were coming. I don't like having strangers looking in through my skylights unannounced!!!

All in all - they were messy and unprofessional, and in my opinion (as a builder) overcharged. Look elsewhere.

These guys are crooks and specialize in real estate inspections.

The buyers for my home had Mike come over to my house to inspect my roof prior to the sale. He never knocked or let me know he was there and just went up on the roof. He found some very minimal issues and quoted $600.

I had the repairs done by Tom Leach Roofing for $175 and they even went above and beyond and did some additional work. Couldn't be happier with them

Mike came back out to reinspect and told me everything looked good. Then told the buyers that the repairs were not done properly. He asked my agent for an $850 cashiers check made out to pioneer roofing before he would sign off on the roof. I had no choice since this was a few days before closing. Something didn't sound right here.

Fast forward to closing day. The buyers informed the closing agent that they made a deal with Mike for part of the $850. As a landscape contractor myself, that is completely illegal with our LCB license, not to mention unethical.

So I have asked multiple times for a receipt, explanation or anything from Pioneer Roofing. Nothing. My next step will be to file a complaint with the ccb.

I ask you as you are reading this review. Is this the type of people you want working on your home or commercial building. Someone who will put his license on the line for a couple hundred bucks, what other corners is he willing to cut to save a few pennies

I scheduled a repair for a leak around my chimney. It was right in the rainiest part of december, so they were understandably super busy, and couldn't schedule for several days. I went ahead and scheduled (talked on a Monday about a Wednesday or Thursday repair). On Thursday I hadn't heard anything so I called and left a message. On Friday I called and left a message. I didn't get a call back until the following wednesday. I understand being busy, especially this time of year, but if you miss an appointment and get multiple phone calls, it is in the companies best interest to at least pick up the phone.

I personally do not agree with star ratings. Pioneer roofers did a good job on a very demanding project we had some challenges, but worked through them. Good luck Mike!

They went out of their way to make time to fix my leaky roof. The crew acted professionally and seemed to care about what they were doing. They described the problem and when they had the time the job was done quickly and efficiently.

I have had multiple project done by Pioneer Roofers and every time I have been very please with their level of craftsmanship and professionalism. They did an outstanding job and kept the work site spotless. I fully recommend their services and will personally use them in the future when the need arises.
