Steve is the kind of builder who brings quality, integrity, and attention to detail to every project. Whether it's a remodel or a new build, he approaches the work with craftsmanship and care—and he makes sure things are done the right way, not just the fast way. He communicates clearly, follows through, and genuinely cares about the people he’s building for. Steve is not only a great contractor—he’s a great guy to have on your team.
The best thing we did was walk away from moving forward with McDowell Mountain Builders. Steve was terrific to work with but he brought on his project manager, Tara, things went south quickly. It was clear to us the moment that she was looped in, we would never get answers to our questions, we only met with her 2 maybe 3 times but both times were a pain to try and get simple, basic questions answered. Her response was typically we can’t do that so you should move on. The weird thing was that when Tara had her help there like Steve and Maddie they were much more knowledgeable and flexible to accommodate or at least present us with cost differences and options and a reason why.
We unfortunately wasted way too much time and had a really terrible experience working with Tara. We would have gladly worked with Steve if that had been an option. Luckily we just completed our 2 bathrooms within our budget of $60-65k all in with another GC who was fantastic and we were able to work 1:1 with him rather than through a project manager - so seamless! If anyone reading this needs a recommendation, feel free to reach out.
Here is a snipit of an interaction with a simple questions that Tara just completely dismissed:
“But I'm a bit confused about the tile piece. The original bid had tile listed at $22,443, with the original scope being zero-edge and 10-foot (to the ceiling) tile. Which was apparently why it was so expensive.
So I'm trying to reconcile how we're now at 8-foot tile and curb-edge while only reducing tile cost by $443 to an even $22,000. It makes me wonder if there was a misunderstanding by the tile installer. Or perhaps one of these two reductions was accidentally added instead of subtracted?”
Tara’s response:
“ Good morning, Ana.
After discussing with the team, we've determined that renovating both bathrooms will exceed the $60k cost estimate. We're unable to make any more price adjustments unless we eliminate the guest bathroom or vice versa. Let me know your thoughts.
Best regards,”
Absolutely disregarding a basic question that Maddie could have answered for us given her knowledge on the tiling costs and being that Maddie had originally proposed this idea of taking out the zero edge for ~$4,000 of cost savings to us. But nope, Tara just dismissed and said we would have to cut 1 entire bathroom from our remodel project. Made zero sense.
Anyways, lots of back and forth with little to no resolutions other than the fact that Tara couldn’t supply basic answers and we didn’t even start on the project. I could only imagine if we used them and had to work with Tara for the next 4-6 weeks because it was very frustrating just trying to get an actual bid from her completed let alone the full project.
We had a freak hail-storm that broke windows and did a lot of damage. MMB did an excellent job from start to finish to get our house back into shape. Thank you!
