Matt asked me for a review, and I am going to be blunt. I am writing this a year and a half after closing on our house, with items that have still not been completed and warranty work that has not been done. I struggled writing this review because for the most part our home came out gorgeous, however, the build process itself and working with Matt was a nightmare. I attribute most of the good that came out of our build to me and my wife having lots of communication with the sub contractors and doing a lot of Matt's job for him. Honestly I would never build with Matt ever again. They are highly unorganized, communication was very lacking, his contract is very one sided, follow through on commmitments was terrible. This started from day 1 His architect took nearly 2 months to make minor edits to a floorplan that we gave him blueprints for of an existing home. Because of this delay we missed out on 3% percent interest rates and were stuck at 5%. Once the plans were finalized it took 3 more months just to get started, just to find out they never got the plans engineered and the changes approved with us once they were finished. Our plans had floor joists and ductwork running in floor with full 9 foot ceilings in our basement one day we show up and there are beams and posts exposed in the basement. We signed in May, we didnt have foundation finished until just before Christmas. Our home took 20 months to build, Matt will blame this on everyone and everything else under the sun rather than take ownership for his own organization issues. He constantly plays the subcontractor against the homeowners and vis versa when timelines are not met or issues arise never taking the blame or accountability for his own actions (or lack thereof). These are just a couple of the multiple issues that came up, not even scratching the surface on overages, tile mishaps, gas leaks, lies to us and the subs on timing concerns etc.

If you build with Matt expect everything to take twice as long or longer than what he tells you. As an example

We had asked Matt to tell us when our house would be about 90 days out from completion so we could list our home for sale. In April he said we were 90 days out and should be done by July. We listed our house for sale, sold it and moved to Idaho just to find out that our house was no where near completion. Me and my wife helped make calls to the subs and push things to get it moving faster over the next several months. We then had to buy a trailer and live in it until December until our house was actually completed. 8 months not 3.

Also for overages, dont ever expect to have him be able to prove anything. If something costs more than expected, you will pay more for it. However, if something costs less than expected you will never see it, but they also dont keep receipts filed so there is no way you will ever be able to ask him to prove anything. We almost took him to court over this issue, except it was december and we were in a trailer running space heaters, we didnt want to hold up the close of our house so we let it go.

Now a year and a half later after closing we are still trying to follow up with warranty issues that have yet to be resolved. A light fixture that was never installed correctly, siding that needs replaced, a doorbell that needs hooked up, paint work on cracking in our drywall that needs done, flooring in my office that needs to be glued down. I gave this list to him and his daughter 6 months ago with multiple follow ups since then with notes from our inspector on everything that needs done.

Then about a month ago Matt asked me for a review. Well here is a very blunt and honest review. I hope this helps.

My wife and I purchased a partially built vacation home that presented quite a few challenges. Matt and his team took over the project and professionally saw it to completion. We constantly get compliments from friends and family on the construction and attention to detail. Great work and a big thank you to Matt, his team, and all the subs!

We love our new home and the quality of the construction. They were able to build our custom home just the way we wanted and we continue to get compliments on our home.

I had a disappointing experience with Matt Sommer Construction, which prides itself on being a "Christian-owned company." Unfortunately, when it comes to professionalism and reliability, they fall short.
Over Memorial Day weekend, I tried to schedule a meeting with Matt to get a quote for a shop. Since he was going camping, I was flexible and agreed to push the appointment out by a week for his convenience. The day before the scheduled appointment, I messaged Matt to confirm, only to find out he had forgotten about our meeting and was out of town again. Despite this, I attempted to reschedule for the following week, and he responded with "That's fine."
I had hoped to work with an honest contractor and persisted despite being blown off the first time. After all, people do make honest mistakes. However, the day before our second appointment, I reached out again to verify the time, and Matt completely ghosted me.
After this experience, I tried reaching out to other contractors. Unfortunately, my 34x36 shop was considered "small potatoes" during this busy time of year, and I haven't been able to get anyone's attention. I'm not hard to work with, but because of Matt's unprofessionalism, I'm now facing the prospect of either framing this myself or postponing the project entirely.
Matt Sommer Construction failed to deliver even the basic courtesy of keeping scheduled appointments, leaving me in a difficult position. Instead of displaying the honesty one would expect from a Christian-owned company, and simply informing me if he didn't want to undertake the job, he chose to take the easy route and ignored a potential customer. If you prioritize reliability and professionalism, I strongly recommend seeking construction services elsewhere.

Matt built our house during probably the worst time in recent history, the tail ends of Covid. Even with all the delays for materials and labor, we got a wonderful house and shop under budget and on time. His advice and expertise were comforting throughout the process. Alexis and Saydee ran the office and were great to work with for picking out all the plumbing and heating and shingles and siding and door knobs and lighting on and on and on. These ladies kept it all together and always moving towards completion. You found your builder.

Matt begun building our home and shop in September of 21. We used Ben, his architect, and over several days and drawings we had what we wanted in design. He completed the shop in Sept 22 and moved our motor home in just in time to beat the weather. The home was completed in December of the same year. Since it was our first build, there were challenges for us in certain areas that Matt explained or answered without hesitation. In addition there were a couple of situations where either he or us compromised on to keep the build moving forward. However all adjustments made were well in our comfort zone for both of us and it was effortless to come to a satisfying conclusion. There may be an opportunity for Matt to build a home in the future for our daughter and son-in-law and we’ll use him again!!

Matt Sommer Construction was the general on our home build in Rexburg area. Overall experience was pretty good throughout the process of building for the first time. There were obviously bumps along the way, but Matt and team were pretty reliable to contact and work through resolving said bumps. We love the final product and consider ourselves lucky to be in such a beautiful home.

Matt was the general on our home build in Rexburg. We have a beautiful home but my wife essentially had to be a co-general on the job to make that happen. Matt repeatedly could not deliver on the fixed portions of the contract forcing us to go out and find other subs to keep it in budget. And this was more than just changes we made or prices on materials and labor going up. He wasn't even close. He had the plans when he put the bid together, but seems to have bid it mostly on a price per square foot basis. That doesn't work well for custom homes. We might have made a different choice had we known he couldn't build that house for close to that price. The "contract" quickly became mostly one-sided bringing stress to our side at every turn. He simply wouldn't include some of the fixed price features without raising the price. Matt's frequent emotional outbursts were also very stressful. His supervision and inspection of his own subs was poor to nonexistent leaving us to follow up with them. In the end, because we held him to a few (not all by any means) of the fixed bid items, he left the job without a final walkthrough inspection and punch list resolution and told us he would not provide any warranty on the build. Although we were contacted by a group of other homeowner he built homes for to join a class action lawsuit, we declined. We needed to bring an end to the stress. But we did feel it was important to do this review and hope others will write reviews of their experiences, good or bad, to help your neighbors make a safe home acquisition decision. This is the only recourse some of us have short of expensive legal costs, and is probably the most effective.

I have worked with Matt Sommer Construction on a few of their projects, and they have been super easy to work with. Alexis is always quick to answer my calls and emails. She always helps me get the information I need. I would definitely recommend working with them!

bid the framing on my sons house, was the low bidder, but when it came time to do the work he would not honor his bid and wanted to charge more. At this point all other bidders were busy, so we framed ourselves instead of going with the bait and switcher.
