Got my PV installed by Malama Solar after getting my roof repaired. The installation crew was very polite, quiet and efficient. They kept area clean and took rubbish with them. Very satisfied with their excellent work and service.

Don't ever involve yourselves with them. Their a legit scammers. They don't know how to fix the system. They argue that one person said and did something right while another said that their team member is wrong. First of all they provided a blue print which the the installer never followed.

Kudos go out the administrative side of getting started and the design team. Installation was mixed. All was good except screw holes not being patched and 2 big screws sticking out in one of our bedrooms. I was told by the team lead they would be fixed same day and also ensured me they would all be fixed. They patched only two or three and left a few different holes and those aforementioned screws. In contact with support who have little to no idea as to when this will be fixed on week 2 post Installation. Also still no connection to these panels. I feel kinda lost in the process at this point and disappointed in the quality and communication of Malama Solar after reading great reviews.

If you’re looking to install PV and need a company to work with then Malama Solar is the one for you! Their staff have been both professional and friendly and made our journey so easy for us. If you want great customer service, they do most of the legwork for you. They went as far as to request the permits to install the PV from HECO, city and county, and my HOA, researched and recommended finance options, and hooked us up with a roofer to replace all our shingles before installation. After the initial consultation they reviewed my electric bill and came up with the best plan to get me off the grid and minimize HECO dependency. The installation process took two days and the crew were punctual, friendly, worked hard, and cleaned up well each day. They even offered to come back to paint the conduits and other parts for free to make sure the color scheme of the whole solar project was within our HOA’s paint specs. Cheryl, Vivienne, Olia, and the rest of the staff (sorry if I forgot to mention any names) don’t get enough credit with how smoothly they made the process of getting PV. Like I mentioned they have great customer service and the follow up to ensure my PV system was working properly, getting HECO’s approval, and now we’re waiting for the city and county to close the permit. We highly recommend Malama Solar for all your PV needs, you won’t regret choosing them over any other competition.

We decided to go Solar to combat the rising electricity costs. We shopped around and landed on Malama Solar. Our experience has been great from the beginning. All our questions and concerns were addressed timely and completely. From Brandon and his sales process to Vivienne coordinating all the paperwork/permit/scheduling process to Christopher and his team managed by Diedrick through installation process were all top notch. Open and transparent communication throughout the process and excellent customer service experience, the team went above and beyond.

After talking to a handful of companies we decided to go with Malama. Sam and Samson helped us set everything up and it was really easy. Highly recommend

The experience with Malama Solar field installation was great. Not accounting for things on "Hawaiin Time" once they started, they got the job done. But I would allow down time for when or if the surf is up..... Aloha...!

Our family got solar last year, something I’ve always wanted ever since I had heard of the idea! I dealt with Olya who was great at addressing all of my concerns. She set our family up with a system that covered all of our energy needs including our new electric car! It takes some responsible management of our system, regarding when we charge, but driving around on the power of the sun is amazing! We are regularly saving money and it feels good to be living more responsibly. Our situation is kind of particular in that we live in a townhouse and we have to run an extension cord out to our car to charge. We made it work, however, and our association works with us regarding the power cord out to our car. Malama has been very attentive regarding the few concerns we have had along the way even from the owner of the company! In all these guys really seem to care and the care didn’t end once it was installed. They live up to their name in all ways and I would recommend anyone to this company!

Overall great experience with Malama Solar. From day one Representative Samson was cordial, knowledgable, and professional. The rest of the Malama team followed suit, including the installation crew who did an outstanding one day installation! I’m extremely pleased with my system! As promised, I have not yet pulled any power from HECO! Thank Malama!

One of your soliciting salesmen (George) approached my home today and spoke to my girlfriend repeatedly said, 'Just one more question' and refused to leave our property after being told a clear 'no' and then even requested to use our restroom. Absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional. That is out of line & infuriating. Frankly - if you are placing your employees in situations where they are desperate enough to ask for help from people they are pitching to - shame on your company. Hard pass.

Had a great opportunity of meeting the installers over in Hilo on the big island! And talked for a bit! Really knowledgeable guys and super friendly. I know a lot about the electrical world but not as much solar side of things so it was cool to talk to some experts in that industry! And they did such a great job!

We were introduced to Malama Solar by a close friend in 2019. They have always been extremely easy to work with. They answer our calls if we need them, and they're prompt and professional. I especially want to give a shout-out to Cameron who did our meter upgrade. The installation took a lot longer than expected because of how our home was wired, but Cameron was a trooper and stayed at our house past dark. Thank you Cameron, and the whole Malama team for taking such good care of us!

Horrible company and a bunch of scammers!! Do not work with Malama Solars. I was promised that if we purchased their solar they will come down and fix any problems that we have with the solar. After experiencing problems with the solar I called multiple times and was told they would call me back and have not heard from them still. Don’t waste your time even considering this company!

Malama sold us power promises but never delivered. My family can't afford to waste time or money with these crooks. We wants answers and to stop our agreement with them asap. Everybody reading this dnt trust Malama for what they say more what they do and don't do... we are stuck and want a fix. Go with a better company for solar that is credible.

From salesman Austin to installation crew (Jay and his crew), I have zero negative feedback throughout this whole process. Definitely a company you can rely on to get your solar needs analyzed and installed. Mahalo Malama Solar.

Long review. TLDR; Malama Solar has excellent customer service and average prices.

My house uses about 2,000 kW a month (about $850 average monthly bill), so we needed a large system to get us to zero.

We started with sunrun since they're endorsed by Costco. Their reps are nice enough. Their price is not. We were quoted 56 Hanwha Q-Cells (the 2nd best panels available. First is LG but they are not warrantied for salty air) panels, 4 inverters, 4 batteries. A system size of 22.40 kW which gave us an offset of 142%. The large offset is due to living in Kaneohe, so between the rain and shortened solar hours, we would still produce a fair amount in winter. The price for all this was $174,687. A 25 year loan at 4.99% brought our payments out to about $740 a month, and that's with applying our full tax credit to the loan. If we didn't, the monthly would be $1,056. A bit eye-watering.

I reached out to Tesla Solar, RevoluSun, and Malama Solar.

Tesla Solar was the cheapest. I don't have access to the quote anymore, but the build was about the same as sunrun but with more panels since Tesla uses Tesla panels. Tesla panels do not produce as much per panel. Their price tag was about $85,000, nearly half of sunrun's quote. You will get frequent emails about completing steps of the process if you do not do them within a certain timeframe. I found the local rep less than helpful in answering my questions.

RevoluSun did not call me during our scheduled time nor anytime after, so I did not move further with them.

Finally, we have Malama Solar. The process starts with a few questions on their website, and you get a very rough quote and a Google Maps image with panel location overlaid on your house. The next day I had a presentation of our actual proposal. She was very thorough during her presentation and answered all my questions. She even steered us away from some less than favorable options.

We were quoted 46 Hanwha Q Cells (same as sunrun), 2 inverters, and 3 Tesla PowerWall batteries. A 16.79 kW system. I do not have the quote anymore, but the offset was about 110 to 120%. This came out to $113,000, and this was offered with a 3.84% APR for 25 years. The payments with full tax credit application would be $437, almost half our monthly bill! The full amount without the credit would be $625 which is still less than our current.

I asked the same questions about the roof and shed, and Malama Solar was able to work with us to fit all the panels on the new section of roof. They also were able to design the equipment location without moving the shed.

With all these options, we went with Malama Solar. Their friendly and responsive customer service made up for not being the cheapest option. Permitting was a breeze since they took care of that entire process, and we chose customer self supply (CSS) (no feeding excess to the grid, what you make is yours). Once all our ducks were in a row, installation was scheduled for 2 weeks later.

Malama Solar sends you a video to watch to understand what to expect during installation. We only had to move our cars out of the garage for equipment storage (panels, inverters, etc.) and clear the area where the inverters and batteries were going to be.

Every person seemed happy and friendly, and they were more than willing to answer any questions and explain the different parts of the system. Due to the size of our system, all the equipment took two days to install, and day three was hook up day. They have to turn off the power to connect the PV system to the main panel, but that lasted less than an hour.

The crew setup the monitoring portion including firmware updates and all the other technical stuff. Before they left, they showed us on the app our home use and solar generation, and on a partly cloudy day, we were at 12kW producing and using about 3kW.

Shawn Little, superintendent. A very kind and personable person. Sounds like he could do an entire install by himself, top to bottom. He supervises and interjects if needed.
Kaluna, electrician. Busted his okole in the hot sun all day to make sure everything was right for me. Delivered an excellent final presentation/explanation of my equipment.
Kean, electrician. Quiet, kind, and just works. I mean a real, old-fashioned worker. Knows his stuff too.
Dan, rooftop installation. Humble, quiet, just works. Had all 12 panels up by 1:00.

I recommend Malama Solar, and suggest you ask for this crew specifically. They probably will say something like "all our crews are just as good," as office/admin tends to do, but I'm pretty sure as the customer they will accommodate you if you insist. It just may take longer for your install because of scheduling.

This is the best solar company out there in Hawai’i. They are very professional, great customer service and locally owned on O’ahu but has an office here in Keaukaha. We rather support local businesses since COVID and we’re glad we found Malama Solar. Brandon met with my husband and I in our garage and walked us through the entire process and answered all our questions. The entire process was fast, painless and also gave us clarity. The permitting and HEC took the most time to get approval before installation but Cheryl and Ella were awesome in communication and following up with me on the next steps which made it stress less and care free. Diedrick was so wonderful during installation and a very hard worker even though he was short handed he got it done. We were home during the installation and he was very respectful to not to be intrusive. I feel so wonderful for choosing Malama Solar then the other businesses out there and will recommend them to anyone. Communication is a must and I knew every step of the process from signing the contract to permitting and getting approvals to installing the system to maintenance and servicing the system. Most companies are focused on just getting the work done and skipping out but not these guys, Malama Solar don’t, cuz dea mo’ bettah!

Working with Malama Solar was a breeze. Jay and his team were professional, knowledgeable and super helpful. They communicated with me the entire time on what was going to happen, what they needed to do and did an all around great job! It was fast and efficient, everything looks great!!! Matt, who is a part of the team went above and beyond when he saw that our water solar panels were in really bad shape and how dangerous it potentially was. Then he went as far as to check out our hot water system, with his past expertise in the area, he was able to tell me the problem and even give me options on what we could do to fix. On top of it all, he is saving us money on our water bill that we didn't realize we were paying. I would recommend Malama Solar to anyone looking to install or upgrade. Malama Solar is the way to go! In the beginning of our process, we ran into some issues with Sunnovas emailing system which almost took us off the hook.That is when Karson, our sales representative, reeled us back in with reassurance that the finish line was near. On May 22nd, 2023, Jay and his crew showed up to our house to begin the installation of our system. They were very professional and respectful. They did a great job with informing us about any changes that were necessary. The work they completed was exceptional and one of the best things about them was how clean they kept the work area(we've worked with messy "contractors" prior). Today May 23rd, 2023, our system is up and running and we are extremely happy with the final results. A locally owned company that provides honest work is not common, so I'd like to thank Malama Solar, Karson, Jay and the crew for helping my family GO GREEN! - DA AMOSAs

If you are considering getting solar, I would 100% recommend Malama Solar for your solar energy system. Ke’ali’i Mahoe was my sales representative and he went above and beyond to make sure that my experience with Malama Solar not to stressful. He made sure that all permits and documents were updated, even with DHHL, he recommended CJ’s roofing (Charley) to repair my roof for a more reasonable price, 100% recommend CJ’s roofing, and he always kept me informed. When it was time to schedule the installation, I was contacted by Virginia (I think that was her name) and she confirmed my installation date and sent me an instructional email of what to expect when the installation crew arrives. The day before my scheduled date I received a reminder via email. The crew arrived as scheduled, contacted me of recommendations and finished installation with no problems. This is a solid company. The professionalism, workmanship and customer service is wonderful. The best part for me is, it's locally owned and locally managed. I'm all about supporting local companies. Justin walked me through the process during installation and made sure to answer any questions before leaving. Matt also jumped into the conversation to give me advice on how to save additional energy on my water heater and also checked and drained my heater ( a service not required but he wanted to help me anyways) Love that!! The crew was fantastic. My family was home during the two days of installation and they were very respectful of our space and time. From the start, Malama Solar was very informative and helpful in every aspect of our project. Olya K our salesperson, kept in touch frequently, and answered all of our questions.

I need to make it clear that the process is LONG, but I understand, there are a lot of things that need to be done before installation can happen. Malama took care of it all.

We finally got our installation date scheduled for April. Because we were installing quite a few panels, installation was spread out over two days. Jason and his crew showed up right on time both days (April 12th & 13th). There was a little hiccup during the install, but Jason was very accommodating and took care of it that day.

We are very happy with our system so far! It has been producing the energy we need and hope it continues.

The Malama Solar team is awesome - Brandon answered all my questions and address my concerns with setup. The company took care of all the permitting with the county and electrical company. The installation crew: Josh, Grayson, Levi, Dietrich, Robert, and Damian are a first class team - they worked through the rain and only stopped when the rain really poured - never taking a break, even for lunch. I'm so impressed!

After consulting with other providers, I'm so glad I went with Malama Solar - even after install, they are answering all my questions in a timely manner.

I want to give Malama a great review but it's time they take some responsibility instead of putting it all on Sunnova. We let Malama sell us a Sunnova system that has been nothing but a massive failure since it was turned on. I has not been the system we were promised, under performing, breaking, failing, and a year and a half of problems. For a while Malama has been understanding and sympathetic to our problems with the Sunnova system but ultimately it's gotten us nowhere. The system has worked 3-4 months of the year and half we've had it. We're paying $4-$600.00 HECO bills plus an almost $300.00 solar loan bill monthly. This needs to be fixed and it's not all on Sunnova.

I just read someone’s review that said “We were sold on how much we were supposed to save and the overall monthly price. We were told we could keep the low payment by claiming the 26k tax return and apply it back to the 87k loan. When we go to file taxes the representative says we write off too much each year so we will never see that money.” Same thing happened to us. The tax incentive was the salesperson’s (and finance person he brought out to “go over the numbers with us”) biggest pitch. I’m still trying to figure out if there’s a way to get this money or if it’s going to remain a huge loss. The sales guy wouldn’t return our calls and we were told he doesn’t work there anymore and a person at Sunnova said they would inform their supervisor of the situation, but we’ve never heard back from anyone.

October 6, 2023 Update-- my system is still completely broken, it works only some of the time. It is clear that I was sold lemon products by Malama solar. Very hard to communicate with them. Currently speaking with attorneys and the Better Business Bureau who will have to step in to help.

Beware of Malama Solar, they are a complete scam!! They lure you in to a "0% interest, $0 money down" loan that is ultimately extremely expensive, only you install complete junk equipment on your roof and home that barely if ever works. I had PV panels and 2 Generac batteries installed in December 2021, and the solar panels And batteries have not worked for at least half the time since they have been installed. My monthly energy bill has nearly TRIPLED since i bought Malama solar panels And batteries. Because I'm paying my full heco bill most months (since the panels And batteries usually do not work at all and getting them serviced is impossible) PLUS the bill for the predatory loan they hook you with.
I am not sure where these positive reviews are coming from, as my choice to go with Malama has been a complete nightmare. The strong impression i have of Malama Solar is that they do not stand by their work, they do not help when the panels and/or generac batteries break down-- Malama Solar simply wants to take your money and then wash their hands clean of any responsibility after installing a complete lemon.

When you try to get them to come service it takes at least a month to even schedule a service appointment. You have to call the bank Sunnova and speak to someone who is completely clueless at a call center, then call Malama then call sunnova again, and then **maybe** you might be so lucky to get a service appointment on the junk, broken down solar equipment they installed in the first place. Malama solar is a complete SCAM.
So what you're left with is a HECO bill that is the same as it was prior to installing solar PLUS a humongous solar bill from Sunnova. Paying double to triple monthly for a completely broke system.
I have hired an attorney to help rectify this situation, since malama will not deal with you once they've scammed your money from you.

Likable and professional salesman but found some hidden lies. We were sold on how much we were supposed to save and the overall monthly price. We were told we could keep the low payment by claiming the 26k tax return and apply it back to the 87k loan. When we go to file taxes the representative says we write off too much each year so we will never see that money. Then they were supposed to take our monthly usage to build a system that fits. Well the system doesn't even sustain a night's worth of battery usage. We have gone to unnecessary lengths to try and lower our usage but still go on the grid. So now we pay the electric company and this loan. Reached out to malama and they said we are now with sunnova for any issues. When we try to reach out to sunnova that they contracted this to, we get no where and they pushed us past our warranty date with the company telling us just give it another month to stabalize. Then we get past the date and they say we are past our warranty date to return. To top it off our system doesn't even have an automatic transfer switch to go on backup power when we lose power. Another reason we got solar, but now we have to pay more to have that installed. I would do more research on solar companies.

Malama solar employees especially the front office were very supportive and helpful. Electric bill was in the high $400 and now half now but the next electrical bill should be very comforting, but want to say Cheryl been there to help us out. Thank you Cheryl and also to Alex and his partner who made it work as well.

The whole experience was great. Everything was smooth from start to finish. I was most impressed by their electricians. When they came on site to install there wasn’t as much room as they thought for the electrical equipment. But they figured it out and we’re very professional!

We have wanted to go solar for a while but have been confused by the differing proposals we were getting from different companies, and their impatience at answering our many questions. Finally we connected with Brandon from Malama Solar. Brandon is extremely knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our questions about our options, including breaking down the pricing in detail. Such a great experience working with Brandon. I did my homework and got a couple quotes and Malama was the best choice. I didn't feel like I was getting tricked into something. He was really straightforward and gave me all the info that I needed in order to make the right decisions for myself. The process was quick and easy and now I'm blasting my AC all day and am paying less than half of what I was paying before.

Joshua was very friendly and helpful. He was also a lot more transparent and honest than the other solar reps from other companies that I spoke with and that's why I went with Malama, I feel like they are trustworthy. The install crew was awesome too. They kept the place clean and worked quick, even in the rain. If you're thinking about getting solar, I would recommend that you consider Malama.

7.24.2025 - Due to unforeseen circumstances the battery on my solar system malfunctioned but Malama took care of the issue. Today, Gabe and Shelton came by to install the new battery which was done in an hour. They were even able to test it and we didn’t even notice it! Mad props to these two humble, knowledgeable and quick! Malama Solar is very lucky to have these two as part of the team! Mahalo Gabe and Shelton!

We qualified and got approved for Solar beginning July 2022 and the reality of Solar is upcoming and set for installation tomorrow! I can’t believe how quick they were to get all the approvals!
