Home Energy Medics and Ben in particular were timely and communicative and knowledgeable. We arranged a time for the audit and he was on time and evaluated the house and asked questions about our goals while explaining anything he was noticing or considering in an accessible way. The follow up appointment was extremely informative with a well laid out explanation of the different elements of our home and an action plan to address the issues. They were very flexible as we mixed and matched what we wanted to do and understood when we wanted to break it into phases. Excited to get the first phase executed this summer and bring some bills down asap!

This is my third time using Home Energy Medics (HEM). We moved to a new home that was just outside HEM’s service area, and while I called other companies that do service our area, I just wasn’t satisfied (probably because I’ve been spoiled by HEM in the past since it’s a great company, resulting in my high expectations in what I expect and look for from other insulation companies). When calling other companies, they were not as comprehensive as HEM, and wouldn’t do drywall repair if they needed to get into poorly insulated spaces, wouldn’t do painting, wouldn’t address roof issues, wouldn’t fix leaks, etc. I’d have to coordinate that all on my own. So I reached out to Scott, and his operations manager Vicki, to see, if as a repeat customer, they could help me out after a brutally cold winter. To my surprise they remembered me after several years had gone by. Despite being outside their service area, Scott and Vicki were more than willing to help. Once again, I’m satisfied and impressed with HEM’s work. I don’t know of another all-in-one, does-it-all company. Scott has high standards and has a hand-picked team of responsive professionals and sub-contractors that he trusts and knows by name since he has been working with them for years. His team is a reflection of him and they operate by the same standards. We had a large and sophisticated project with many moving pieces to fix our home to bring it up to modern insulation standards and code. After Vicki quickly arranged all the customer intake paperwork, Brian performed our energy audit and he was very thorough, investigating every nook and cranny, and gave us a detailed run down of all our issues. Matt was our project lead who gave us a project schedule and kept us updated throughout our insulation renovation. Matt juggled many things—including driving the distance to our home a few times—and kept our project moving despite weather and other unforeseen delays that was out of HEM’s control with minimal disruption to my family. Their roofer, Osvaldo, was amazing and worked tirelessly from sun up to sun down to fix our roof leaks and our rotten dormers. Their other sub-contractors were all very courteous and cleaned up daily. All were very responsive to my nit noid questions throughout. At the end, they made sure everything was done properly, and HEM even had crews come back to address missed things we found because they wanted to ensure things were done right and that I was 100% satisfied. Benjamin did our final inspection and test out and he was very courteous, ensuring that I was completely satisfied before concluding my project. He also shared with me his findings of a drastic improvement in insulation performance. Now that summer is upon us, my home already feels cooler given our insulation improvements and reductions in air leaks. Despite the high cost of our project, HEM’s process, thoroughness, and customer service gives me peace of mind. HEM continues to raise the bar when it comes to all-encompassing insulation renovations and customer service. It’s especially great that they will handle the rebate paperwork with our power company and handle the Pearl certification process. I look forward to winter to see how my house performs and staying nice and warm, and to any other projects that I’ll need HEM’s help with. I’m glad I chose HEM again.

Scott is excellent to work with, very knowledgeable, responsive. Great company that I suggest to others. They helped us improve our aging house and increase the airflow significantly. Also the sealing of our ducts that was suggested has been a great change.

I was very impressed with Matt. He clearly knows his stuff and is very thorough. It sounds like many of my issues stem from a dual zone system conversion that probably should've never been done in the first place. Wish I'd known about home energy audits back in the day before making any modifications. I believe it would've saved me time and money in the long run and many headaches.

Found shortly moving into a condo in a new building that we had a very thin wall separating a bedroom from our next door neighbors' living room -- we could almost hear conversations word-for-word and TV noise can through very loud and clear. The difference Home Energy Medics in reducing noise transmission through the shared wall is night and day -- conversations can no longer be heard, and TV noise was significantly reduced. They were extremely professional, and the work was top quality (and finished ahead of schedule too! If you have noise transmission issues in your home, these are the people to call in the DMV. Highly recommend!

Got a home energy audit for our single family house with them back in October and they were super prompt in scheduling! The energy audit seemed comprehensive - we were impressed with Nick! However, we waited 3 months to get the completed report and then sit down with our energy auditor to discuss courses of actions. Once we saw the report, we appreciated the detailed notes on our test results and pictures to confirm any issues. That said, the action plan was not as customizable as we had hoped for as we were working within a certain budget. They presented a 3 tiered solution versus a line item of potential work. We asked for line items but it felt like pulling teeth to go down this path.

We had really wanted to address some known issues before winter arrived. However, the delayed response from our energy auditor and the inability to get in touch with someone in the office after numerous requests really turned us away from working with them. We were so excited to work with them based on reviews, but ended up going with another company to complete the work in a timely manner

I had concerns about my rowhome's climate and air quality for some time and contacted Home Energy Medics to complete an audit. Matt completed a thorough and clear evaluation then provided a flexible set of options for making improvements. Every recommendation solved one of my concerns and they spotted one major issue concerning an improper exhaust vent that I was unaware of. After moving forward with all of the recommendations from the evaluation, the difference has been immediately noticeable; even temperatures, efficient HVAC performance, significant upgrade in air quality and moisture. The follow up report had impressive numbers but it was the improved comfort of my home that my family could instantly feel that made the investment worth it. Matt and the entire team were all easy to work with and made sure the project was completed in full. Highly recommend considering what it can offer your home.

Great company to work with - our 3-story townhouse needed attic insulation and duct sealing work (among other things) so that it wasn't so cold in the winter and hot in summer. The difference is quite noticeable and we are very happy. We also worked with them on my mom's townhouse with similar issues as well as window replacement. Our only regret is wishing we'd done it earlier!

Scott and his team did a big project for us 5 years ago. We had problems with condensation in our attic crawl space and needed to pull the insulation and replace with foam insulation, sealing the air leaks. It worked beautifully, however this summer we had some new problems in the guest bathroom.

I called Scott and he remembered our job and was very willing to help us with these new condensation problems. He came out right away and fit us into his crew's schedule and we were all clear within a short amount of time - much to our relief.

We worked with Home Energy Medics in April of 2023. They foam insulated our attic, sealed around windows and base boards, sealed the hvac ducts and added an additional HVAC return. The work was done promptly and very professionally. The small issues that did occur were quickly resolved and made right. I've waited a year to write this review so I could respond to the effectiveness of the renovations. We've had a signficant drop in our electric bills, especially in the summer, and our up stairs is noticeable cooler in the summer which is exactly what we waited. Overall, I'm very happy with the work and would recommend HEM to others.

Couldn’t be happier with Home Energy Medics. I’ve worked with them on two major projects now. Total pros. Helped me develop and implement a plan to improve the comfort and efficiency of my home. Expert advice, efficient project management, and high quality work. Do an energy audit before you upgrade HVAC. Major HVAC contractors seem to want to make quick sales without taking the time to understand a home’s needs. Home Energy Medics ran the numbers and found I could convert from a gas furnace to a smaller heat pump that was more efficient - I can barely tell it’s on, but it works like a charm. What an improvement! Give them a call if you want a home energy partner in the DC area.

After two unbearable Summers with a top floor in the 80s and 75% humidity and several kind offers from hvac chop shops to replace our "undersized" system, I finally called Home Energy Medics to check out my 1981 townhouse. They came to do the energy audit and we moved forward with their suggestions for air sealing the attic, adding new insulation, and properly venting the upstairs bathrooms through the roof.

There are just too many good things to say about Home Energy Medics. It's a local, family owned/run business, yet they are sophisticated and organized. Everyone we worked with was professional, friendly, fast, helpful, and delightful. Scott, the owner/operator, was engaged, generous, knowledgeable, and wonderful to work with. He really cares about this stuff, as does his whole staff.

Work was done on time, exactly how they said it would be. No price increases or hidden additional work to balloon the budget. The work was HIGH quality, I was watching closely. Truly peerless.

All that is great, but the thing that matters the most is THEY FIXED MY HOUSE! It worked. No matter how hot or humid it is outside, our top floor is the same temperature as the rest of the house and about 50% humidity. All the time. And the hvac system is no longer straining to keep up. And our bills went way down.

The cost was substantial. This was an investment and hard decision. There's a leap of faith involved, somewhat. I regret not doing it sooner. You can find many contractors that will get a few cans of air seal foam and some insulation and stick it in the attic. They'll probably charge you one third of the Home Energy Medics price. Don't do it. It's wasted money. Home Energy Medics can be trusted. They do high quality work that actually WORKS. And they stand behind it. They believe in this stuff.

I can now tuck my daughters in to bed without dripping sweat into their eyes. I can thank them for that, and that is priceless Choose Home Energy Medics. Seriously.

This is a long overdue review of the FANTASTIC work that Scott Donelson and his Home Energy Medics team did at our home in N. Arlington last summer. Scott is extremely committed to improving energy efficiency in his clients' homes, both to improve the comfort and quality of indoor air we experience in our homes, but also to help reduce our community's carbon emissions (I know, as I've done advocacy work with Scott on the subject). Scott goes above and beyond the norm to be responsive, he takes the time to discuss options and explain why each step is necessary (these are not insignificant investments and we all want to spend our money wisely), and he doesn't 'disappear' when the job is done -- rather he offers follow-up to ensure all is going to plan. Scott has extremely respectful, competent and trustworthy people on his team -- I felt 100% comfortable having them working in my home while I stepped out for awhile. In sum, I would HIGHLY recommend Home Energy Medics to anyone else in our northern VA community!

I enlisted Home Energy Medics to assist me with a home energy audit in late-January. After a few months, it became self-evident that my home (1985 construction) needed some upgrades if I were to reduce my utility bills. Mitch Brubaker and his team performed a thorough inspection of my home. I was thoroughly impressed with their professionalism and communication throughout the process. Everything was clearly conveyed and delivered, as promised. They laid out a robust analysis of my home’s energy consumption profile with an in-depth review of each of the major components of my home’s overall performance (air leakage, insulation, HVAC measurements, quantified air flows in all rooms of the house).

While I had some intuition of my home’s challenges, Home Energy Medics provided a quantifiable set of metrics to evaluate the home’s performance against modern standards (IECC standards, Pearl certification standards) for excellence in efficiency, comfort, health / safety, and quality. The team uncovered issues that were not identified by my home inspector that, if left unaddressed, would increase the risk for long-term health and safety hazards. For each issue area, Home Energy Medics produced an in-depth solution (consistent with requirements set out for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement tax credit).

I am grateful to Mitch and the entire Home Energy Medics team for their diligence and professionalism. I look forward to working with them in the future as we implement the recommendations outlined in the home energy assessment report.

Mitch did our audit at our house and was really great. Very informative, let us walk around and see the thermal camera, and even explained the process to our young daughter who was interested. We have a lot better idea of how we are losing energy in our old home now.

Happy repeat customer of Home Energy Medics! They helped solve a tricky moisture problem with our HVAC ducts, and provided many other sensible & effective solutions that greatly improved the comfort and performance of our home. We have recommended them to several friends and neighbors as well!

In 2020, Home Energy Medics performed a significant amount of work at my residence to improve energy efficiency and address air-quality issues. After a review of the house, they provided a detailed audit report (that clearly showed the many issues to be addressed) and an action plan.
Air sealing between the attic and upper floor dealt with leaks in such places as recessed lighting, tops of interior and exterior walls, and utility penetrations. Insulation was added to raise the old estimated R-10 rating to R-49-60. Baffles improved ventilation and moisture conditions in the attic.
They replaced all HVAC duct branches in the attic, most of which were leaking due to damage and age. They also installed a whole-house ventilation fan to improve air quality. Finally, they installed new bathroom heaters and fans to improve moisture control, and carbon monoxide monitors to address potential air-quality concerns.
The staff doing the work showed a high level of professionalism and attention to detail that left me confident that the work was done exceptionally well. They also suggested additional issues that could be addressed to improve energy efficiency more, and I hope to deal with these in the near future.
The residents of the house have noted a great improvement in air quality in the house since the work was done, measured by fewer respiratory problems and a general increase in overall comfort.
Home Energy Medics did an exceptional job on this project, particularly having to deal with several significant complications:
• They had to work around a mold-remediation effort by another contractor that had several scheduling problems and imposed several delays on their work. They handled this with patience and grace.
• The entire project was done at the height of the Covid pandemic, with all of the associated concerns about masking and contact.
• All of the extensive mold-remediation work in the attic significantly damaged the upper-floor ceiling, pushing the drywall down and causing many cracks and holes. They did an excellent job repairing the damage and returning the ceiling to the original condition by re-screwing almost the entire upper-floor ceiling; patching cracks and holes and replacing drywall as needed; and priming and painting everything.
• They identified poor workmanship by an earlier contractor who left bathroom ductwork venting into the attic space. They were able to replace this ductwork and install proper ventilation to the outside.
• The house has a hipped roof, which causes its own complications in the way of access and installation.
• Finally, they came up with a way to install an elevated catwalk from the access hatch to the attic to the center of the attic to enable access to a roof fan and other equipment in the attic space. This catwalk was very useful a year later during installation of solar panels.
I strongly recommend Home Energy Medics for this type of work.

I have waited to provide this review, because while I was able to comment immediately on the care, communication and cleanliness of the team that worked in my house, we have now had both summer and winter to experience the difference. We began with a full energy audit in March, and were able to schedule the priority work for June (insulation, weatherization, ventilation, duct sealing). The problem hotter/colder room has been solved and there is definitely more heat being retained in winter. The air coming from the vents is more forceful. The upgrade of bathroom ventilation fans to super quiet is something we enjoy more than anticipated. I am so confident in Home Energy Medic's diagnosis and plan of action for our home that I have recommended them to friends in the area and look forward to working with them as we move our home from energy wasteful to high performance, adding heat pumps in the next phase.

This team was polite, responsive, and professional - and above all, our home is just way more comfortable to live in now, AND our energy bill has made a substantial dip. Really happy with the work.

I used HEM last fall to address a humidity problem. They did a great job so I did not hesitate contacting them this spring to fix another problem. Scott replied to my text almost immediately and was able to inspect the problem the same day. Everything was fixed and finished within 2 weeks and the problem has been resolved. All of this at a very decent price. I strongly recommend them.

We have been exceptionally happy with the service, care, and expertise of the Home Energy Medics team. Bob and Diego were fantastic at helping us through the process, identifying work, listening to our needs, communicating with us throughout every stage of the project (including planning), managing the subcontractors, and more. Our project was not exactly "inexpensive" but the quality of the work, outcome, and project management is well worth the cost and peace of mind in investing in our home. I would absolutely recommend Home Energy Medics to anyone.

We did not have a good experience with Home Energy Medics for our major house energy efficiency upgrade project. Our challenges started with our energy audit and initial proposal, which (once we had agreed in principle to proceed) was completely rewritten by the owner, after finding that many elements of the initial audit had either misdiagnosed the issues with the house, or understated/overstated the cost of mitigation and the potential cost savings from the upgrades. After we had a revised proposal, we felt very pressured to sign immediately so that all scheduled crews could get the project done immediately, and even experienced an unauthorized and unexpected visit from the company after letting them know that they couldn't come to the property that day.

While the work went smoothly once started, we had a number of issues with permits for work not being pulled on time (or at all) with the DC DOB, and the speed of the work and lack of documentation led to us not being able to pursue any DC incentives under the net zero home program. Foreman on-site was personable, but owners' bullying style before and during the project was not appreciated by me or my wife.

Six months after the project, my HVAC has stopped working five times, we aren't seeing the energy savings we had anticipated through the energy audit, and despite this being an energy efficiency project I haven't been able to get any of the energy efficiency rebates from the city or DCSEU that were anticipated for this project. Home Energy Medics just keeps connecting me with their subcontractor for the HVAC issues and is assuming no responsibility for it (thankfully the HVAC contractor has been really responsive), and no one at home energy medics is willing to help me actually capture these rebates that were part of our economic calculations to do the project. So...not a very good experience

Very positive experience for the initial full audit of our home's energy efficiency. We got a full audit because our home is older (1920s) and we were concerned with an unsealed crawlspace, attic insulation/finishing, and draftiness in the winter. Brian, the Energy Auditor we worked with, was thorough, professional, friendly, and patient with our many questions. We haven't gotten the results and recommendations yet but just the experience of the initial evaluation was positive, and I would highly recommend working with Home Energy Medics.

I have written only a handful of reviews over the years, but I was very disappointed with my experience with Home Energy Medics. If you are concerned only about insulation and don't mind paying a significant premium and waiting a long time to have the work scheduled, then they could be a good fit.

The pros:
- Provided a competent energy audit

The cons:
- Acoustical analysis (which I had identified as my primary concern) was useless
- Auditor wasn't very knowledgeable about areas outside of insulation (e.g. water heater or noise)
- Aggressive sales pitch - during the audit and follow-up calls, there is a great deal of emphasis on signing up with them to do the work
- Prices are 50-100% above what other, high-quality contractors charge
- They wouldn't have been able to do the work for a number of months

Details:
I recently moved into a duplex and wanted to explore ways of reducing the sound coming from the upper unit to the lower one. Home Energy Medics website advertises themselves as soundproofing experts, so after emailing briefly I signed up for an audit which I was told would include both a sound and an energy audit. Luke came out and did the audit which took about half a day. The energy portion of the audit was fine, but the sound component was terrible. The company claims to be expert at reducing noise, but rather having controlled tests to determine how the noise is traveling (e.g. through the door, through AC ducts, or through the floor), their tests literally consisted of my going upstairs and yelling, and Luke using an iPhone app to read the decibel level and saying "yup, that's pretty loud". Based on that, he proposed over $40K of added soundproofing to the ceiling between the 1st and 2nd floors - a solution that I don't believe would have solved the problem, and certainly the testing to prove so wasn't done. Everything I have researched about soundproofing talks about the multiple avenues for sound to travel and the holistic approach needed, but Home Energy Medics just proposed what they do (insulation).

Their other proposals were also expensive and focused on large-ticket items. For example, I was really surprised that there was no mention of a smart thermometer, which reduces heating/cooling significantly at a reasonable cost. Instead there were larger ticket items like having a company spray seal the ducts (also ignoring that there were some big leaks that could have been easily sealed with tape/putty). I wanted to replace the two aging water heaters with a single tankless unit, but HEM wasn't sure they could handle that complexity - but the three other plumbing companies I talked to said it was a straightforward job - I had one do it and it is working perfectly! The cost was well under half what HEM cited for the two tankless heaters (the unit was the same as the ones proposed, and was installed by a very reputable company). I also had attic insulation added, at a cost of about 2/3rds of what HEM cited. I'm very happy with what was done. They say that the audit cost is refunded when you have work with them done, but there are some vague project minimums that need to be met. Given their markups I thought I'd be better off getting other contractors do the work.

After emailing HEM about my dissatisfaction about their work one month ago, I never heard back. Giving two stars because I think they know insulation and the energy audit was fine, but I would steer clear due to the reasons listed above.

We utilized Home Energy Medic's services for an initial energy assessment, then for most of the recommended improvement suggestions that they had made. We had them clean our HVAC ducts as well as Aeroseal them. The results of which improved our airflow from the ducts and also resulted in much cleaner ducts (before and after pictures were sent to us of the duct work). We then also had them replace our upstairs bathroom exhaust fans with much stronger and quieter ones that now vent to the outside through the roof. We also had them replace our over the range microwave with a new one I had purchased. They then vented it to the outside as the old one was only recirculating air back into the kitchen. Then, we had them remove and replace all of our attic insulation as well as air seal in the attic before adding back the new insulation. Lastly, we had them remove the old insulation in our cantilevers, as well as air seal those before adding back new insulation. All in all great work and am looking forward to seeing the results of the new insulation this summer and next winter. The fans are all great and the newly vented kitchen stove exhaust is awesome. I love being able to cook without smoke being recirculated back into the kitchen. Highly recommend Home Energy Medics!

We had them come in to do a home energy audit. The advance info was super useful in ensuring we would be prepared when the tech arrived. Both the scheduler and tech were timely and communicated clearly; all my questions were answered. Very professional and thorough.

The owner of the company (Scott) came out to our row house with a shared wall and (sometimes) noisy neighbors. He provided a very helpful explanation of the underlying sound transmission problems and how best to fix it by “decoupling” the wall. Not cheap but I’m sure it would work. We are holding off for now on the suggested solution but I was very impressed with the professionalism and clarity of his presentation.

Over-promise under-deliver

I decided to go with Home Energy Medics, believing in their mission and based on the understanding that they were certainly not the cheapest option, but the price I paid (around 36k) would get me high quality and oversight. This was not at all my experience. Overall Home Energy Medics was continuously over-promising and under-delivering. They never respected their deadlines and I would need to wait a month for things they told me would take a week. Across the board, this comes along with their lack of care for me, their client, despite what they brand themselves as. When they were late, they didn't keep me updated on the status of the deliverables or even answer my inquiries. They also noticed me they would begin work on my house only 3 days before starting it. So I had 3 days to prepare my house for them to start their work (i.e. moving all my furniture out from the first floor) and find alternative housing for the duration of their work.

You can also forget about their promise to ensure you are satisfied: right after their work and after they painted everything, I noticed some wet spots due to a probable leak from the roof on which they just worked. I requested it to be checked. It was never checked. You can also doubt they perform quality assurance checks: after they told me they were done working on my house, I came back home and find paint left on my wooden floor, dark spots on the new walls, and many walls which were not painted despite being in the work plan. But you can count on them to tell you they are not like other contractors, they are the best, they perform thorough quality checks, and ensure you are satisfied. You can also count on them to add some extra things to pay for during the duration of their work.

Conclusion:
Despite waiting a month, Home Energy Medics Energy Audit is fine but I would certainly avoid contracting them to perform home improvement projects. The work quality, customer experience, and hassle to receive any answers from them, are not worth at all the cost of their work. Plus, their promises seem to be more a matter of branding than something they actually exemplify.

I contacted Home Energy Medics for an energy audit because my gas and electric bills were relatively high although I was conservative in my use of energy to the point that I often felt uncomfortable in the upper and basement levels of my home.

Colton Williams performed the initial and final energy audits and explained the test reports.  He was very courteous and patient, and I never felt pressured to follow through with his recommendations.  Scott Donelson, the project manager, made additional recommendations, clarified the scope of the project, and oversaw the implementation of the work which included attic and knee wall insulation and air duct repair, replacement, cleaning, and Aeroseal.  Initially, I was given a start date of about 8 weeks away but Scott diligently worked to begin the project the same week of our first meeting which was a major convenience and greatly appreciated.

The expert knowledge, professionalism and teamwork of Home Energy Medics lead to results that exceeded my expectations.  The significant reduction in air leakage has drastically improved my comfort level such that I feel like I'm living in a new home!

We used Home Energy Medics initially for a home energy audit. Their report identified a number of areas of concern and corrective actions to be taken. We chose to do a number of the recommended action items, including a re-insulation of our attic space and a sealing of our duct work.

They managed the work schedule so that everything ran smoothly and was completed within a timely manner. The subcontractors used to perform the work all did a very good job and there has been a noticeable improvement in our home environment.

After doing a lot of research on Home Audit companies in the DMV area, we came across "Home Energy Medics". We opted for a Full House Audit, our audit - Luke Wallis, was incredible to work with and very patient. He talked through all the potential fixes we require in our house which would make a great impact. Luke clearly knows what he is talking about and works in the best interest of the customer rather than the business.

I used H.E.M. in January 2023 for a home energy audit. The inspector I worked with, Mr. Castillo, was professional, knowledgable, friendly, and thorough. I learned a lot about the inner workings of my home by talking with him and watching him work. I would recommend H.E.M. for energy audits without reservation.

Very glad that we contacted Home Energy Medics to help us solve a temperature imbalance between the main & second floors of our home - something very noticeable during the winter and summer months.

Luke initially came out to perform an energy audit of our home, then walked us through his a list of recommended repairs. We found that our attic was not sealed and that the existing level of attic insulation was insufficient. Scott and Taylor later returned to perform a walkthrough before starting the repairs and took the time to explain in detail what the work would entail. After the work was completed, they came by again to verify that everything was done well.

Our attic is now sealed and insulated to an R-49 value, and our upper floor is now a comfortable living space, even in extreme temperatures!

Had an energy audit conducted by HEM. Communication and scheduling with HEM was easy. On the day of the audit, Diego was on time, polite, accommodating, thorough and efficient. He provided us with a quick overview of the audit results with a detailed report in works. Most notably HEM identified a gas leak we would have not known about if not for the audit. Post the home energy audit, I had some necessary renovations done to make my home more energy efficient. I had a "leaky" home. Thus, extreme makeovers w/attic, duct flow, insulation, kitchen exhaust, LED lighting, etc and my home now has a 52% leakage reduction per the final test out! This is AH-MAZING! I hired Home Energy Medics to conduct a home energy audit to see how our 1979 house was doing regarding safety and energy efficiency. I did not have any major problems to address; I just wanted to know if there were issues I could not see for myself.

The technician who ducted the testing was professional and even encouraged me to follow him around, which I STRONGLY recommend to learn more about what they are finding since the final report the company provides you is just a summary.

Their findings showed our house was not that bad as far as air tightness (blower door test ACH50 ~5) and insulation goes, but our dryer venter was seriously clogged and posed a fire hazard. I already knew that was an issue and explained to Home Energy Medics that I believed there was a disconnect in the pipe after a vent cleaning crew found insulation in the pipe. They recommended rerouting the dry venter piping to another exterior wall, which would be cheaper than cutting into walls and title to find the disconnect issue, and it would be more efficient for the dry since it would be a shorter run to exhaust the heat and moisture.

I agreed to the dryer vent rerouting, and the contractor Home Energy Medics employed to do the dry vent rerouting was professional, clean, and took only a day to do the job. I also had them install low-level carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of our home, which I would recommend to anyone with gas appliances since the regular cheap high-level CO2 alarms you can buy online or at box stores are pretty useless.

Overall, I was very happy with our experience with Home Energy Medics and would recommend them to anyone looking to improve or fix an issue dealing with your heating, cooling, insulation, moisture, and ventilation. I would definitely hire them again. Frankly, all homes should have an energy audit done (even new construction) given how much information you can gain about your home.

PRO TIPS
1) Be at home and walk with the technician conducting the audit and ask questions on what they are finding and how it compares to other homes.

2) Take notes on what the technicians tell you during the audit since their final report is a very high-level summary, and I found it less useful than what I learned directly from the technician.

After having Home Energy Medics conduct an audit and provide a project plan to improve the comfort of our home, we hired them to reinsulate our second floor (formerly attic space) and make improvements to improve the efficeincy of our HVAC systems among other fixes. Their assessment and approach was comprehensive and thoughtful. They were also extremely professional and provided excellent quality work. Furthermore, based on my research it seems that no other insulation company in the area can provide the project management/general contractor type function that Home Energy Medics offered. They coordinated among numerous subcontractors who all provided a high quality of work and took the burden off of us to engage with contractors to make the necessary repairs following the insulation portion of the project (e.g. demo, HVAC, electrical, foofing, drywall, paint, cleaning). In addition, the project managers accomodated our scheduled, communicated clearely the project progress, and checked the work of their subcontractors before completing the job. Following completion, they conducted a second audit to ensure the improvements were adequate. If you have a finsihed space that needs to be addressed due to energy efficience or comfort issues (i.e., temperature), save your time and just start with Home Energy Medics. You will not find an equivalent level of service elsewhere.

Brian and Diego did a very thorough job of analyzing the air flow/leaks in our home, taking time to check everything and then explaining clearly to us what they had found. Very happy with the experience!

My wife and I first consulted with Home Energy Medics after noticing that one upstairs room in our house was significantly colder than all others. We decided to go ahead and have Home Energy Medics perform a whole home energy audit, figuring it would be worth the price to learn where all of our weak points might be, and the HEM crew were friendly and professional during the audit testing as well as in the follow-up where we looked at the results and recommendations, all broken down into tiers of priority and pricing.

We ultimately decided not only to address the original problem room (which is greatly improved as it is now properly insulated) but also down most of the list of recommendations for other types of HVAC sealing, replacement of older incandescent or halogen ceiling lighting with LEDs (and sealing of air gaps between the living space and roof cavity), general cleaning out of our home's crawlspace, more baseboard air gap sealing, and then the very big job of replacing our old roof and giving it a shiny new TPO membrane (and a lot of old, rotten boards were discovered and removed during this process, so it needed to be done). We also added a wonderful new skylight and solar tube into previously dark areas of the house which has made a tremendous difference. All of this varied work and any finishing such as drywall and painting was all handled by HEM, and we were always able to keep up-to-date with work schedules and time estimates through Scott.

Since the completion of the work, we've also had assorted small questions which are always answered, plus a couple of small fixes which were also attended to for no additional charge. We also recently discovered an issue in our house related to an older neighboring roof and are currently in touch with HEM and the neighbor to mitigate this, so it's nice to continue working with the same company and contractors and see that they stand by their work.

I'd recommend doing the whole home energy audit if you do nothing else as you'll at least have a nice report of improvements you could make now vs. those you could save for later, and should you decide to proceed with any of the recommendations then I think you'll be very happy with Scott and the team with Home Energy Medics.

Luke from Home Energy Medics came to out home recently to perform a PEPCO Energy Audit and investigate the causes and possible fixes for some climate issues we've been having in the house. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and polite, and allowed me to be part of the process, listening intently to my descriptions of the issues, thoughts on causes, and answering any questions along the way. I look forward to getting his report, reviewing it with him, and seeing how we can work together to improve the energy efficiency and indoor climate/environment of our home.

Our new house was ice cold during the winter on the main floor even with the heat on. I contacted Dominion Energy and was referred to a list of contractors to obtain an energy audit. I went with Home Energy Medics for the audit and also the recommended repairs. The existing insulation and duct system had been incorrectly installed causing the temperature problem. They explained all the problems along the way and went above and beyond to solve the problems. We went from a R-20 attic insulation to a R-49 value with an 245% improvement. The air leakage had 51% improvement. Our house is now PEARL certified.

It is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. The previous owner took the cheap route and the workmanship was so bad that it required us to repair at great cost. It is important in the long run to have it done correctly by a competent company. I could tell that all of their workers knew what they were doing, unlike the workers who placed in the first system. They were all friendly and took pride in their work. Kudos to Scott and his staff for a wonderful job done!

I had a complete energy audit done on my home today and I learned a great deal. I had a cheaper one done about 10 years ago, but this new audit really did a much more complete job. They founds lots of energy leaks and will be providing me with a full report and then a prioritized list on what should be fixed first to save the most energy. Colton, who did the assessment, answered all my questions and explained all the tests he was doing and why. Ultimately this is going to help me save perhaps as much as 45% on my energy bills, giving me a healthier and more comfortable home. I highly recommend this company.

Brian McKnight, the HEM certified auditor, showed up exactly at the appointed time, was pleasant to speak to, professional in his demeanor, efficient, but thorough in his work, extremely knowledgeable and explained his findings in clear terms that we could understand. In one visit, Brian was able identify the source(s) of some heating and cooling issues we've experienced in recent years, when three HVAC companies could or would not. We are looking forward to Brian's specific recommendations for making our home more energy efficient.

This is a follow-up to our original review of Home Energy Medics. After finishing our job, Scott came back several times to help solve problems other contractors could not. He took the time to listen to us and made sure our job got done properly. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We would again recommend him highly.

Our experience with this company has been fantastic so far. After our initial inquiry they sent us a very detailed explanation of how and what they do. After our initial intake information was then submitted, Taylor reached out via phone call to get a better understanding of our trouble areas and what our main concerns were so he had a jump start before we even had the initial audit conducted. He was very knowledgeable and described in length his background and what he would be doing throughout the days evaluation and assessment. HEM performed a very thorough audit of the whole house by a friendly and knowledgable auditor, provided a very detailed report of issues they found in our old house, and supplied a couple of options for addressing the various issues. Scheduling follow up appointments was sometimes a challenge (it worked out for us since I work remotely and was home most of the time) but overall they provided excellent service and we ended up with incredible improvement to our house's efficiency.

I had an evaluation done in mid May for insulating my front door. I was told I would get a proposal for the work/costs involved in 2-4 weeks. It's now September and I still haven't heard from them despite my numerous attempts to reach them. The only email I got during the time was them asking me to leave a positive review for the evaluation, which I did. I understand stuff happens but you need to communicate to your customers.

Home Energy Medics helped us with a mold issue in our attic. Scott was recommended to us by our mold remediation team and he came out right away to evaluate our situation. HEM worked very closely and at great length with our mold and roofing teams to create a plan to resolve the situation. Scott's exceptional knowledge of building science was integral in assessing the problem, which was essentially a design flaw in the original roof ventilation and poor attic insulation. Without Scott's input on how to correct this problem, we might have spent a ton of money and not effectively fixed the primary cause.
