We hired Ken McLeod of Highlander NW to resurface our old, rotting deck. We are very happy we did.

Ken was responsive, competitively priced and communicated well throughout the project. He was on the job early each day and was quick, but thorough with his work. After the old deck boards were removed, he helped identify and repair a few areas where the frame could be strengthened before moving on to the resurfacing. He was meticulous with each step of the build process.

It is clear that Ken knows what he is doing, is a perfectionist and cares about the quality of his work. We couldn't be happier with the result. We will call on Highlander again for our next project.

We have used Highlander NW (Ken McLeod) for four projects over the last few years: deck & stair repair; siding removal and replacement; rafter tail modification; and the installation of a backyard pergola. In our experience, Ken listened well, tried to understand our requirements, and offered advice/solutions that matched our needs. We found his prices to be reasonable and his work was on-time, thorough, as well as of high quality. Among Ken's professional attributes that impressed me the most are his fairly detailed work-statement(s); his willingness to discuss and make changes to the work-statement(s); and his performance per the work-statement(s) with craftsman-like detail in one pass. It is rare to find a professional like Ken and we have been very pleased with the work he has done for us.

While preparing our home for sale, some worn boards were noticed. Ken came out very promptly to assess & provide a detailed estimate for the repairs...We were worked in to his schedule very quickly- which meant a lot to us, as we were pressed for time. Never before have we seen such attention to detail--as well as a very detailed explanation of the findings/ underlying contributing factors...and everything Ken did to make sure that it wouldn't happen again. If you want 100% transparency, honesty, prompt service and meticulous work, CALL this man! Thank you, Ken...your professionalism was a breath of fresh air amidst the chaos of preparing our home for sale.

Ken at Highlander NW absolutely exceeded our expectations. We had some siding that needed to be replaced and it is an odd type not often used in this area. Ken went halfway across the state to locate/procure the correct product for us.

Ken always clearly communicated with us on scheduling and project status, etc. and most importantly, follows through. We would gladly hire him for future projects without hesitation.

Ken did several things for me over the past year. New siding, entryway remodel and deck repairs. His work is second to none. Especially during Covid I found other contractors were slow to respond and really jacked up their rates. Not Ken, he did outstanding quality work for a reasonable price.

Before having our house painted we wanted to have some new posts built in our front entry and have some areas of siding repaired. We were very happy with the communication before and during the project, and the front entry has a pop that everyone talks about when they arrive. We would use this company again in the future.

Ken did exterior repair on my home working closely with the painting contractor. We also contracted him to rebuild our front/entry deck and an exterior catwalk / architectural detail. His estimates were reasonable and he explained everything very well. He had a reasonable schedule and was responsive. The quality of the work was great. We're very happy with the results and the neighbors like it too!

Ken repaired a rotting front porch stair railing, replaced some rotting siding, and constructed an outdoor firewood storage shed (5x12) from plans that I provided. It was a great all around experience! He answered the phone the first time that I called, provided a quote when he said that he would (I don't recall the exact timing, but it only took a day or two), arranged early lumber delivery to mitigate rising lumber prices, showed up when he said that he would, and finished the job when he said that he would. He also paid attention to details on the firewood shed that weren't part of the plan --for example, sealing the cut lumber ends to minimize rotting potential and installed a vapor barrier between the framing and the metal roofing to minimize the chance that the metal roof would rust due to condensation. And he's a super nice guy. I highly recommend him and will call him again if/when I have repairs that could use his expertise!

Highlander NW replaced a section of weathered exterior siding on our house before it was painted. Ken used Hardie siding, which should fare much better in the future against the weather that batters the south side. Ken was prompt, professional and helpful. The siding looks great.

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?

+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
