DeckTec Outdoor Designs

What DeckTec did to my once beautiful deck is deplorable and has ruined my outdoor space. The deck is a disaster, the stain is uneven, heavy & pooled in some areas, completely uneven and very unfinished. The whole deck will need to be fully restored, it will cost us a ton to undo the work they did.

What in the world stain did you use??!! This is not a redwood deck, this is a light tone black locust, known for it’s beautiful natural and durable look and wear. Disaster! It will surly take a lot of sanding to get this cheap mess they left removed.

I was home when the crew was “finishing up” and asked them, “are you going to do the posts?” they responded with “no ma’am, only horizontal surfaces are in the work order.” I let them know that I would reach out to their manager to figure out where the disconnect happened but that it would be great to have them back any time this week to finish the job. The manager responded to my husbands email and stated that we approved the bid with horizontal surfaces only; who in the world quotes ONLY HORIZONTAL SURFACES & NO VERTICALS??? I now have a 3 tone deck, absolute disaster!! Why would you bid a deck refinish and stain like this? DeckTec is claiming that we are responsible, however, when you say “stair treads, you mean to leave stairs looking the way they do? I highly doubt it.

They have worked on our deck for several seasons now so to claim you’re in the clear when you’ve been servicing the same deck over and over is just ridiculous. The quote was approved quickly with minimal review as we trusted that the vendor that’s been to our house many times, would quote us correctly. What a mistake!

The issue they CANNOT ARGUE is the work on the surfaces they did do is horrible, a complete and utter disaster. Wrong shade of stain & completely uneven everywhere.

This has been a nightmare all the way through and now we get to go out and spend way more money to fix what they’ve done.

Beware of DeckTec unless you want your deck to look like mine – awful!

Absolutely awful experience with this business. We are going to have to hire another company to sand and re-stain the entire deck. We have used DeckTec for a few years and they always tend to over communicate and over complicate with a slew of phone calls and emails but this final experience was almost like a practical joke. They used the wrong stain, applied it unevenly and then didn’t do the vertical surfaces because as the manager Nikole says “There is no mention of vertical surfaces in the proposal.” The vertical wood option would bring the total to around $1200 they said. Thats even just the wood posts on a deck with metal railings! Probably would have taken another 20 minutes. I just wanted my deck stained, all of it, and now it has to be completely repaired. I even power-washed it for hours myself to help the prep process. I support local small businesses and I realize how hard it is out there but this place is being mismanaged. I wish you all could see how bad my $30k deck looks in person. I’m almost excited to read their reply about how this is my fault. Shoot me a message for details on this experience, I’ll save you some time and money.

I am giving Deck Tec this review because they were so amazing to work with. Our covered patio turned out phenomenal! The crew (Gabe, Chelsea,and Chad) were such perfectionist and true craftsman. We got the initial quote from Steve S. and everything came in on budget, no surprises! I love sitting outside now and enjoying our backyard. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Deck Tec!

Pleased with DeckTec's professional service. We had our redwood deck sanded and restored last year, it looked new! Just had them clean and stain again this year. We will continue to have DeckTec maintain our deck. Adam is great to work with. It is evident he wants to provide top customer service. He has an amazing team, hard workers, polite and professional. Really appreciate this company! . When the job is scheduled you are kept up to date about when it will start. The workers show up when they are expected. The workers are polite and hardworking. The stain is not swept on but put on by hand. DeckTec also reminds me when it is time to take care of the deck and listen to me throughout the project to make adjustments to what we are doing. This year my deck is particularly spectacular. So grateful to the entire team for maintaining and pushing me to maintain our deck!

Great experience with everyone at DeckTec from initial bid to project completion. First off, I can’t say enough good things about this company. We have had a lot of contractors for remodels in our home, and DeckTec has been one of the best. We called to have an estimate for removal and replacement of our old, tired, sagging existing multilevel deck at our home in Lakewood. Steve, the owner came out right away and walked us through what was needed and his recommendation for how to replace and give us what we wanted.

The planning process was easy and they made sure we were involved in every step. They came out to show us plans and make any changes we wanted. They took care of everything for engineering and permits with Lakewood, even the HOA. The superintendent came out and met with us several times in the pre planning and beginning stages to make sure we had everything ready to go.

The demo and build process was surprisingly and almost joyfully easy. The crew we got was outstanding, they were so polite and respectful I was blown away. Here at the same time every morning at 7:30 am, took a lunch break at noon and done by 5 with everything cleaned up and covered overnight. The guys actually became part of the family for the 3 weeks they were here. The dogs loved them. They stayed late on the last day to make sure everything was done right and completed correctly, there were no shortcuts taken on our project. The staining crew was out the next day and got it all done in one day. He fixed and painted all the trim boards for us too. If you need a new deck call Deck Tec and have peace of mind that the process is daunting, but they made it easy for us as homeowners spending this much money on a remodel. Truly a top tier local family company.

7 years ago we decided to replace the original 35 yr redwood deck built with our home. We were wanting to upgrade to a low maintenance deck and create more useable living space. We decided to get bids and design ideas. Most of the contractors who responded to our request for bid were un-imaginative in their design ideas and basically all wanted to bid and build a rectangular structure similar to our existing, using synthetic material. When we discussed a roof or cover for sun protection, no options presented tempted us.
After a couple of rounds of bids with no decision we found DeckTec.
After missing the summer construction season we finally found a contractor who both educated and listened to our wants for deck function. They were very professional, had broad experience with various sized projects, types of designs, and materials. A medium sized local company with an address, they answer phone and return calls. They utilize specialists they either employ or partner with to design, build, finish and maintain every aspect of Deck construction, small or large. Still small enough that you you feel appreciated as a customer and an excellent understanding of our sometimes severe local weather affects materials over time, offering hardwood deck materials that most of the other contractors did not utilize.
We chose epay, a hardwood a beautiful product. The construction was performed efficiently on schedule, on time, Workers were polite, kept the site tidy, mindful and careful to protect existing mature landscaping. The design incorporated and took advantage of existing landscaping blending a beautiful structure and extremely functional structure, replacing some and using existing stonework patios. The deck has exceeded all our expectations. We are using it nearly everyday for ourselves and for entertaining. With the roof integrated into our existing structure, the deck feels like another room of our home. Colorado direct sun can be very intense so the roof coupled with heat and lighting makes the deck useable day and night and at least 3 seasons with pizzas, smoking or grilling can be done year round.
The deck has held up well, the annual maintenance has kept the wood beautiful and after 6 years they suggested a more complete refinish of the entire structure. The deck looks like new and we could not be happier, photo below (maybe). Our deck is now our most comfortable and favorite living space to relax during the day! We have decided to stay in our home instead of downsizing our deck is a major reason believe it or not! Thank you DeckTec.

Willful Negligence.
Our project was about as simple as it gets. Add a new guard post and railing, and stain the deck. The owner Steve politely explained how they would extend the post through the deck board and lag it to the existing joist.
To our surprise, the post was screwed directly into the existing decking, leaving it wobbly and unsafe. Worse yet, it appears as if they intended to cut through the decking, as they know they should, but decided not to continue (see photo).
As this new post was added to provide support for people in their 80s as they walk up and down this deck, this new deck post was an accident in waiting.
Is there any excuse for a deck company with 34 years experience to do this? The fact that they tried to get away with this and accepted full payment for this quality of work is inexcusable.

Other Issues.
1. The staining crew did not completely remove the paper drop cloth from the gutter (see photo). When they finally removed it, the tape removed some of the paint from the gutter.
2. Staining crew did not adequately stain the back side of one deck post (see photo), although it was fine after they re-stained it.
3. We asked for a handle to be added, but for some reason the railing was not attached correctly (and they left the rough factory cut) meaning that it was difficult to grab the handle without scratching the back of your hand on it (see photo).
4. Poor communication and scheduling. Even after understanding the need to fix their mistakes, it took additional phone calls to make new appointments. They did come to make repairs immediately the day after these phone calls were made, but they should have proactively made these appointments on their own.

Two Stars - Excellent After Service
These people know what they are doing. Once Josh, the site supervisor took over the repairs, everything went smoothly and professionally. The staining crew carefully walked around to fix any imperfections.
This makes me wonder, however, how we ended up with their B Team and no supervision (Josh admitted that he does not check all the jobs, especially one as simple as ours).

I would give Decktec 5 stars but there service / maintenance dept is a joke . love my deck and love that the guys who built it did a great job , but having the maintenance dept (Adam) come out and repair , maintain and stain my deck was horrible. each time they restrained my deck , it was a clear coat stain put on my deck that looked like they never stained it.
I now stain and maintain my deck myself because the maintenance dept charges you an arm and a leg to do a crappy job. some of my foot boards are split and Adam and the maintenance. dept never return my call , to fix this .
Overall I'm very impressed with the deck and the guys that built it but the maintenance dept (Adam ) get 0 stars for there horrible work and communication. Again the maintenance dept is a joke , Adam is not honest and
does not do a good job at maintaining my deck .
I now stain my deck myself and it looks 100 times better than what Adam and his crew does.overall the carpenters that installed my deck were top notch but the maintenance dept is a JOKE.

Deck Tec did an outstanding job on our deck. We have a large redwood deck, and Deck Tec has been cleaning and sealing it for us for many years. It still looks great after all these years, and we love it.

DeckTec upgraded our deck; rebuilt the steps, railing and spindles. He, I think his name is Dan, did a great job and it’s never looked better. Additionally their crew sanded and stained the deck and steps and the refurbishment basically making our deck look like new wood was used.
I strongly recommend DeckTec for any deck work that needs to be done.

DeckTec Outdoor Designs replaced our old 25 y.o. second story deck. We could not be happier with the process and the result. We had our own concrete man for the ground level work. DeckTec worked cooperatively with him to make sure that the deck would be properly supported. The deck project was expertly completed within the desired time frame.

DeckTec cleaned and sealed our very large wood deck in August. The men only spoke Spanish and we only speak English so it was a little difficult communicating. However, they were earnest in wanting to do the job well. The men were polite and professional. They completed the job very quickly and cleaned up afterwards.

DeckTec built our back porch and patio in 2003. The quality of their work was outstanding, and they cleaned up every day after work, leaving no debris at all. The workmanship even impressed a neighbor so much they came and took pictures so they might be able to have similar work done on their place in another state. I can’t recommend them highly enough – they did an outstanding job on both the design and building of our deck.

The deck is redwood, and DecTec suggests having it services every year. DO IT! After they clean and stain the deck it looks like new again, but more important, it keeps the wood protected for another year.

DeckTec is an impressive business. All the employees, office staff and installers, are professional. We were especially impressed with the installers, they do excellent and beautiful work. We have had many compliments about deck and roof.

Our deck and roof installation is awe-inspiring. It was well worth the money for the design and build. Don't let the cost scare you away, you won't be disappointed. Cheaper is not better unless you're okay with an inferior product.

In my opinion, the maintenance refinishing is a little too expensive, however, it is required if you want to keep the installation looking great.

Aside from the maintenance cost, we are 100% satisfied with our new deck and roof covering. We will use DeckTec again and highly recommend this company.

We have had our deck for just over 2 years now and we love it. Steve and his team did a great job from meeting with us to design the deck we wanted with various options to fit our specific house, yard and our expectations. With minimal maintenance the deck still looks brand new and has made our entire backyard more comfortable year round.

During the design and quote process, Steve was able to meet me during my lunch break and go over the details and all scheduling was flexible around my schedule.

During construction, the crew was on time and always professional. Ready to answer questions and cleaned everything on their way out.

DecTec removed the 27 year old deck and built the new deck we designed with their help.

We changed the wood from all cedar to mahogany decking and cedar railings selecting the materials from samples they provided. The stained, finished replacement deck looks great.

We used DeckTec several years ago for a free standing patio cover. It’s been great, allows us to enjoy our patio year round, for most of the year it’s our dining room. The construction was excellent, pleasant and polite guys, showed up when they said they would. I was also impressed with their customer service after construction was done. One of our beams developed a crack after 2 years and they came out and replaced it, which was pretty involved, but their service was prompt and communication with me was good throughout.
They’re not inexpensive but you get what you pay for.

Extremely awesome experiences both times for our back of house full deck cover and hybrid Pergola/Gazebo install. highly quality craftsmanship and more, timely, all services and aspects were professional and top notch, will utilize them for any other home addition moving forward and repairs as needed. Highly and strongly encourage all to use this company; after 9 months of BS and failed promises we found DeckTec and wont look or recommend anywhere else.....

DeckTec does excellent work! In 2014, they designed and built a wooden patio roof for us and in 2021 they designed and built us a front walkway and porch with concrete pavers. Both projects came out beautifully and are built to last! See the photos! Their crews and project managers were excellent to work with, always on time, diligent, and thorough. Neighbors liked our patio roof so much they had DeckTec build one for them several years later. We have worked with many contractors over many years, and DeckTec is one of the very best. From foundations to finishing touches to final cleanup, everything was done right and done really well! They weren't the cheapest, but their prices were very reasonable, especially for such high quality design, materials and workmanship!

We have used Decktek twice over the last 12 years or so. Our first project was a beautiful back porch cover. They’re engineering and design was magnificent in making the project look original to the house. Our most recent project was at our new home. We had them design and build a pergola cover for our back porch. Again, we were so pleased with the design and finished product. Steve had designed a more extensive plan than what we wanted and was very workable at adjusting the project to our desires. Would always recommend Steve and Decktek.

Both my husband and I were totally amazed how professional and talented DeckTec Outdoor Designs is!!! We had a complicated and expensive project-- a deck of pavers, a mahogany deck, and a covered mahogany deck with built in furniture. The results are beautiful. The workmanship is flawless. We have not seen such perfect workmanship in years!!! The materials used are of the highest quality!!! ABSOLUTELY NO SUPERVISION BY US WAS NEEDED. WE ARE FOREVER HAPPY AND THRILLED.

DeckTec did a terrific job replacing and expanding our deck. We spent more time on the deck this last summer and fall than over the last 10 years or so. They are working now on a plan to replace a concrete patio with paving stones. Great company to do business with!

When it came time to make some changes to our deck, most other companies only wanted sell us a brand new one. DeckTec was able to work on our existing deck, bringing it up-to-date. They redesigned our staircase, changed out our railings, replaced some footings to bring them up to code, and also updated our paver patio. Our updated deck looks great and is the envy of the neighborhood.

Live DeckTec! Nice, professional, fast workers. Great choice of products and options. We had one deck refinished, one replaced with iron wood. If I'd known about iron wood earlier, I would have had both replaced decks done with it. It is worth every penny!! The stuff is amazing. Indestructible! A nd one replaced with regular wood. They replaced the rails on all the decks, they are beautiful. We have dogs, so they had finish one deck before they could do the next one, which they did quickly and without complaint. I found one nail from all three decks when they were done. ONE. That is amazing. They picked up every single nail and splinter from the old decks. I would absolutely use them again. They aren't the cheapest but their work is worth it. Every guy that was there was polite, worked hard,and did a great job

Decktec did a great job on our deck which required some engineering as it is off the "3rd" floor putting it 20+ feed above the ground. The mahogany decking is beautiful. They only problems we had is with some redwood on top of the railing which keeps curling up in the sun. Overall satisfied.

DeckTec was an all-time great company to work with. They were always professional, came when they said they would come, completed the work in the days they had budgeted for, and overall are just nice people to work with. We have referred them to many of our friends, and all that have used them have been as pleased as we are with the quality of work. DeckTec pays attention to all of the details and is meticulous with their work. If I could give more stars I would.

We have done two construction projects with DeckTec over the past three years. We had a complete removal of an old deck and construction of a new deck and a bit later had a new pergola added. We could not have had better experiences. DeckTec provides exceptional customer service. Everyone on the DeckTec team was focused on the customer experience and strived to ensure that we were continually kept up to date on schedules or issues during construction. The completed projects met or exceeded our expectations and are truly high-quality products. We needed our deck rebuilt and they were recommended to us by a neighbor who had a deck repair done by DeckTec. I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience working with DeckTec and the beautiful deck they built for us. The process was easy from start to finish. They did all the work of getting the permits and HOA approval. We asked for a design component they didn't have a lot of experience with yet. They were willing to figure it out and the finished product is amazing. Everyone we spoke with was courteous and helpful. There were a few times as the build was going on that we changed some of the design and it was greeted with "whatever you want, we want to give it to you" type of attitude. The quality and craftsmanship is outstanding. 5 stars!! I will not hesitate to recommend DeckTec for any deck needs.

We have been homeowners for 50 some years and the team, that recently worked on both a wooden deck and a deck covering on a second deck, was the best we have ever seen. Not only were they industrious and hard working, but they were detailed perfectionists and so very courteous with each other and extremely polite with us.

Kudos to Brian who is responsible for the Fresh Deck Conceirge service started this year by DeckTec. As part of the service, Brian has treated our deck several times this year keeping it looking fresh all season. He as done small repairs and upgrades including replacing old deck lighting at no extra charge. DeckTec originally built our deck cover more than 10 years ago and has cared for it since then. It looks like new today and we receive compliments all the time about the beauty our deck.

We needed a roof over our exiting deck. Steve came out (pre COVID)and we discussed the a plan. He took it back to his office and returned with the design which was great! We have cement tiles for our roof and that company had gone out of business. They found matching tiles with our roof, upgraded the structure because of the weight. The crew was great and their work was exceptional. If you are thinking of a new deck with a roof call the experts at DecKTec.

A consultant came to our house to discuss a patio sunroom. He talked on and on about his experience , showed us endless photos from projects that had nothing to do with us, and how he would design OUR room. We were told the project would go into the design phase and they will get back to us in a few weeks for pricing etc. Never heard from them again. My guess is that middle class is too lowly to them.

DackTec just finished our covered deck project, it looks like the house was built with the deck, exactly what we wanted! They have been great to work with through the entire process. Highly recommended.

We used DeckTec to upgrade our back deck and install a new roof over it. Steve helped us come up with a practical and beautiful design that fit our situation perfectly. They were dependable, the quality is great, and we couldn't be happier with the final product.

if I could negative stars I would. I was going to talk to them on my lunch break about rebuilding my deck today (Feb 11, 2020) so I parked in their lot.
and walked to work as the weather left no parking anywhere else. By 9 am they decided to bury my car in snow, and when asked about it they got defensive and said I should be glad they did not tow my car. If you like doing business with passive aggressive people that are scared of their own shadow feel free. This business is a joke and so are the people there. If I could make their life hard I would as that is what they deserve.

DeckTec bur deck 254 years ago and it is still as beautiful now as it was then! heir work and capability to design is second to none! Steve, the owner is extremely creative.. they are fabulous! Dot & Bill Mechtenberg

I can't say enough about how our patio turned out and how much we enjoyed working with the team at DeckTec. Steve (the owner), Vince (the project manager) and Ruben (the installer) were all terrific to work with. Honest, on time and most importantly the end project was awesome!!!

This is the response I sent after the owner visited my home to give us a bid, and then declined to bid our project. He must have assumed we had no money and it was not worth his him. Shame, the decks look great.

Dear Steve,

I find this way of business very interesting. Did you decide not to work with us based on so little information? I told you we would be open to spending more money and it seemed like you did not care. Were you tired from the convention? I felt a real lack of connection and caring for you. Like you assumed based on our house, that we did not have the budget that would meet your requirements and nothing to do with ours.

I find this very off-putting and as a business owner myself, I would consider this good feedback as I asked for a proposal and you do not know how much the project will even cost without running the numbers. We often turn down work but only after bidding it, hearing the client fully and then making recommendations for the best outcome, before we release the client from our sales process.

Your decks are beautiful but your attitude on the day we met was tired and uncaring. Snobish really.
We had a right to be heard and given a bid before you turned us down.

Food for thought. We are great clients and have money too. Sorry you felt you had wasted your time.

BE CAREFUL HERE. If you do not have a huge amount of money to spend, they do not give you the time of day. Sad.

Had 2 decks built over 10 years ago. Today still solid and look fabulous. Had them come out to sand and clean recently for pending house sale. thumbs up to the company and office team!
