If you’re looking for a contractor/carpenter, we highly, highly, highly recommend David Gaikowski, Bonafide Construction, Inc. We first hired David to replace ~300 feet of deck railing, repair some rot, and add a new set of deck stairs with a concrete pad. We were so impressed with the quality of his work, his work ethic, and his extensive prior experience, that we approached him about tackling a substantial interior remodel of our home. Now that we’ve reached the end of the project, we consider ourselves so incredibly fortunate that he was willing to take this on.

A lot of contractors claim to be a jack-of-all-trades, but David actually delivers. Roofing, ventilation, framing, window and door installation, exterior siding and trim, tilework, flooring, interior trim and finish work, and more … he’s done it all for us. Most notably, he designed and built a complicated split-landing staircase, tiled a shower/tub surround with a complex pattern/geometry, and designed and built a custom seating/storage solution with cedar accents (see pics).

David has a strong attention to detail, thinking through an entire task before ever starting. He seems to relish a good challenge. He sets high standards for himself, and it shows in the quality of his work … a true craftsman.

His great rapport with other local trades (electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting, etc.) made scheduling easy and resulted in very little down time. Having grown up in the area, he also has an extensive network of contacts who provided additional resources, such as a dump trailer, for the project.

He was flexible in who and how materials were sourced, which helped ensure that we were getting the lowest possible prices. He understood that the goal was NOT to spend all our money, but rather that every dollar mattered.

He was extremely patient during the exhaustive decision-making process and aided the process by using props to demonstrate exactly how something would look. No matter our request, we were always met with a “we’ll make it happen” reply and a smile.

His wife, Stormie, worked behind-the-scenes to provide detailed invoices weekly and offer a variety of payments options. Other contractors that we have previously worked with did not offer this same frequency of invoicing and/or level of transparency, but we found it to be so incredibly helpful for planning and budgeting as the project progressed.

We were living onsite during the entire renovation (in a downstairs mother-in-law apartment) with our two dogs and a cat. David was extremely conscientious about letting us know when to expect him and/or the other trades onsite and about keeping the gates closed for the dogs. With his positive attitude and his sense of humor, it was so easy having him here that he practically became part of our family. At the very least, he became a good friend.

If you are in search of an honest, ethical, reliable, capable contractor and all-around nice guy who shows up when he says he will and delivers on the work he promised, you can’t go wrong with David Gaikowski and Bonafide Construction, Inc. I know we won’t be calling anyone else!

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?
+-

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
