The car was not clean or in good shape. The seats had water stains and had a smell. The rear hatch didn't even work on the suv. We had to get luggage and beach chairs in and out the back doors. Kind of defeats the purpose of having an suv. The people were nice at rental but didn't offer to upgrade us to a vehicle with working doors.
Absolutely Horrible Experience – Stay Far Away from Alamo at 206 Julian Dr, St. Thomas!!
If I could give zero stars, I would.
My recent experience with Alamo Car Rental at 206 Julian Jackson Dr in St. Thomas, USVI was nothing short of a nightmare. They charged us $1,060 for a scratch they claimed occurred during our rental period—yet provided no photos, documentation, or proof that the damage wasn’t already there.
We were told we had to pay immediately or we would not be taken back to the airport—even though we had less than 2 hours to board our flight and were depending on their shuttle service. Their response? “That’s not our problem.”
We asked that the claim be submitted through our insurance provider, which is standard procedure. They flat-out refused. We were stuck with no Uber, no local transportation options, and felt completely trapped. Out of desperation, we paid—this was nothing short of extortion.
To make matters worse, prior to even getting the vehicle, we were forced to pay:
• $750 rental fee
• $500 deposit (which we were never warned about)
• $50/day for insurance, the highest I’ve ever seen at a rental company - so we opted to use our insurance.
I’ve rented vehicles all over and have NEVER been treated this way. It’s worth noting that my family rented from Avis and Budget the same day, and not only did they pay no outrageous deposits, but their insurance was a flat $60 for the entire trip. We all returned our cars the same day. No issues.
Also worth noting: another family at the same location told us they were charged $6,000 for a minor dent. This seems to be a disturbing pattern.
If you are African-American or not a local, be especially cautious. This location is operating in a predatory and possibly discriminatory way. We watched non-African American renters return their rentals and absolutely no inspection was done. When we reached out to Alamo corporate, they were shocked at what we experienced and immediately escalated the issue. That says a lot.
Avoid Alamo in St. Thomas at all costs. Do yourself a favor and rent from Budget or Avis instead. They treated my family with professionalism and fairness—Alamo, on the other hand, felt like a scam operation.
We rented a car from Alamo on our St Thomas trip. They were helpful from the start to the finish. Very kind and helpful! Highly recommend them!
