Brief summary: Working with Tyler Walker was the best experience we've ever had working with a contractor. Period.
We finished our basement in late 2020 amid the construction boom that unexpectedly accompanied COVID. It made it difficult to find a contractor, and with the assistance of a neighbor with contracting experience, we interviewed a number of potential fits; Tyler passed our friend's initial "sniff test," and we ultimately hired him to finish our basement.
After previous experiences with contracting professionals that fell squarely in the "just get this over with" bucket, our experience with Tyler was exceptional. He was truly pleasant to work with, professional, practical, and a very capable communicator. Several points are worth highlighting:
1) Tyler listened long enough to provide a comprehensive bid that he stuck to. Where change orders were needed, they were due to our own indecisiveness. He was up front about costs associated with changes, and was responsive to our concerns. We never received an unexpectedly high invoice. This was tremendously appreciated.
2) Tyler set and stuck to a reasonable but optimistic schedule. Start to finish, including kitchenette, bathroom, flooring, framing, electrical including a new box, drywall, painting, stairs w/carpet, et cetera, we were done in less than 6 months.
3) Tyler worked professionally with our outside subs, including HVAC and in-ceiling audio/video. He was great about working in outside schedules and collaborating with other contractors to get things done right. We were grateful not to have to get in the middle of this.
4) Tyler held his workers to a very high standard. Tyler actively sought our feedback to make sure that all of the little issues were identified and addressed. One example: The grout in our shower was done adequately, but not entirely to our liking, on first go. When we pointed a few divots, he had his tilers back the following day. Done. Another: We put in a small kitchenette with a built-in fridge, and the cabinet-makers were suboptimal, with multiple mistakes - paint color, measurements, others. Tyler took the project on himself and ultimately completed it, with his own painter, to make sure that the finished project wasn't just "good enough," but exactly what we'd planned. He didn't stand for shenanigans from his subs.
5) This is the kicker, and the reason we'd hire Tyler again above any other contractor: 2 weeks after our project was completed and we'd paid Tyler, we spent the first glorious warm day outside that we'd had since the previous summer. Water on, sprinklers going, glorious. That evening, our daughter called us to the basement to point out water dripping from the ceiling, and water pooling up through the LVP flooring that we'd just put in. At 1023pm that Saturday evening, I texted photos to Tyler. Within minutes, his response: "Unbelievable. Do what you can to soak up any standing water. I will be there tomorrow as soon as I can in the morning. Just had our baby, so need to get help for my wife." The following morning he was back at our home, tearing out drywall to find the single drywall screw that had pierced the copper pipe to our outside hose. Drywall and flooring out, flooding mitigation measures, re-rocked, re-floored, re-painted. We never saw a bill, never had to contact our insurance, and never had to worry that Tyler would fix everything.
We're several months out from this, and the basement looks wonderful. There is no price tag that can be placed on a contractor who is talented, professional, and agreeable, and who is entirely trustworthy to do good work, and to take ownership of problems that need to be addressed, big and small. We couldn't be happier.
We are actively assessing projects that we have identified as needing to be done in the next 5-10 years so that we can work with Tyler again. While our previous experiences with contractors have fallen squarely in the "slightly worse than going to the dentist" bucket, we simply could not be happier with our experience with Tyler.
