We had a leak from our roof which we got fixed. Now we needed to get our ceiling fixed. Chris came on Wednesday and removed the old, moldy sheet rock took from the ceiling. He sanded off the popcorn coding on the ceiling. He put a couple of layers of sealant on the ceiling. Once dried, he painted it. All of this was done in 2 1/2 days. It looks great. They Chris and his partner, cleaned up our room at the end of each day and when he was done. It looks great. The finish project is great. I’d highly recommend this company.

We hired Top Notch to tackle the basement bathroom remodel in our 1960’s rambler. They were able to design a functional layout that took into account the odd room shape, low hanging plumbing and ductwork. High quality products and custom built cabinets were used. End result was a functional bathroom more beautiful than we could have ever imagined!

We had purchased a commercial building to start another childcare center. Mike did a great job managing the build-out as the general contractor. He was able to get all the contractors in to get the job completed in a timely fashion. We never experienced any delays. We would highly recommend Top Notch.

The transformation turned out really nice! Everyone was great to work with. There were a few hiccups, things took longer than expected, and there was some dust/dirt, but nothing out of the ordinary for a kitchen remodel. Mike and Adam really strive to make sure the customer is happy and even tiny issues are resolved.

We recently had our second experience working with Mike and Adam and the rest of the Top Notch crew, and I would wholeheartedly recommend them (and use them again!) for any projects you might have. We worked with them on finishing up our basement, and then on adding a large bathroom in the basement as well. Everyone we dealt with from Top Notch (including subs and assorted other crew people) were always courteous, professional and respectful. One thing I appreciated was getting honest advice on options, as opposed to them just recommending what ever would lead to a more expensive project. And Mike has been great with dealing with any follow-up issues that might arise after the project has been finished. One little thing that I appreciate as well, is that Mike and his crew have a good sense of humor as well!

I’ve waited about a week to write this in order to give a fair review of Mr. Shimanski of Top Notch Contracting. Things started out good. During our initial meeting he seemed very friendly, flexible and overall very helpful. He provided us an estimate and everything made sense. A friend referred him to me and based on their experience (and others) Mr. Shimanski was good, but he was very busy. He was not very responsive nor was it easy to actually get him to start the job but they were happy with the final product.

We chose to go with Mr. Shimanski to finish our basement. After Mr. Shimanski gave me the initial estimate he asked me to make product selections so he could give me a final quote. I did that through a series of emails and that wasn’t going well. This wasn’t an effective way to communicate my plan that was my fault, although he offered no better way to communicate. I decided to make a slide show with all of my selections. That slide show included pictures, examples, and links to actual products. He still wasn’t giving me the time of day. He came up with delay after delay due to being busy, sick, and another delay from one of his contractors that Mr. Shimanski insisted that I contact directly.

He then insisted that I hire a Designer associate of his. I was very reluctant to pay a designer, but in hopes of getting the project moving in the right direction, I agreed to a consultation. She reviewed the slideshow that I put together and she said that she really didn’t have anything to offer. She stated that I already had everything well organized and the products selected. I’m very thankful that she had some integrity and didn’t charge me.

In an additional attempt at speeding up the process, I offered to purchase all of the materials myself and bring them to my house. I also reached out on my own for another cabinet subcontractor when one of his failed to respond after several weeks (he was also very impressed with the slideshow).

I finally received the final quote and it was beyond disappointing. It was full of errors (incorrect floor, ceiling, lighting...etc) and it did not have any of the selections that I chose. Not a single one. On top of that it was at least $10k higher than his initial quote (removal of several items plus a substantial increase of final price), despite us eliminating several items. He put absolutely no effort into generating this quote. It was essentially the same as the initial quote, just much higher price.

When I asked for an explanation, he essentially said that he’s too busy to provide additional details and he was too busy to take on my job. His subs were busy and materials had gotten more expensive since the initial estimate. Despite committing to my project, he agreed to perform 12 other projects.

I don’t think that Mr. Shimanski is a bad person. I fully understand the current crazy market. I think he is just greedy and got caught up in the current construction market. He sees all of the money that he can earn from the glut of projects coming his way, and the quality of his work suffers because he doesn’t have the time. If you choose to hire him, don’t expect any guidance from him. Don’t expect any level of detail on his estimates (nothing itemized) and don’t expect them to be accurate. Expect to overpay. If your build is not a standard/cookie-cutter project, expect him to drop you in an instant when another project comes his way.

Top Notch did an excellent job remodeling our kitchen from demolition to cabinets, flooring, painting, counter tops as well as the living area. They were very professional, friendly and reliable. We would recommend Top Notch Contracting to anyone looking for great work!

Top Notch truly lived up to their name! We had, what I would consider, a pretty major project between additions on both ends of the home, a remodel of a couple bathrooms and finish work throughout entire home. They were meticulous from start to finish which fit my personality. Mike has strong communication skills and kept a complicated project with many specific requests light and fun. His counterpart, Adam, runs a good crew on site and you can tell has excellent carpentry skills that can bring something laid out on paper to life. Since this project I have used Top Notch on a garage remodel and look to use their services on a commercial office space project as well.
