My wife and I inherited a home that required extensive renovations. After several months of gutting it, making it our own, and moving in, we were finally down to one last big project: replacing the roof.

We had considered going solar at the same time, but with so much conflicting information online, it was hard to know which direction to take. I interviewed several companies, and ultimately, my wife and I chose SunBum for both the roof replacement and solar panel installation. We went with SunBum for several key reasons:

The owner, Kevin, was punctual, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. He took the time to sit down with me, answer all of my questions, and fill in some gaps in my understanding of solar.

They used their own employees for both roofing and solar work. This was a big deal for us. I had read too many horror stories about solar companies subcontracting the roofing work, only for the subcontractors to go out of business—making warranty issues a nightmare.

SunBum is a local Virginia Beach business that’s been around for over a decade. That gave me confidence I wasn’t dealing with a fly-by-night operation that might disappear after the install.

Kevin never once tried to upsell us. When I asked if a battery system made sense for us, he looked at our use case and simply said, “No.” That kind of honesty was refreshing, especially after dealing with a few pushy companies that wouldn’t leave us alone.

Their pricing was very competitive. I won’t get into specifics because every project is different, but I can say we felt we got excellent value for the quality of work and service provided.

The roof installation came first. The crew arrived exactly when scheduled and completed the job—including ridge vents—in just one day. They were respectful of our property and our neighbors’, and they did a great job cleaning up afterward.

About a week later, the solar panels were installed in much the same fashion. Kevin’s master electrician arrived first and walked me through what to expect. The installation crew was professional, courteous, and took the time to explain how to operate the system and what the next steps would be.

Our situation was a bit unique. Most solar companies ask for a year’s worth of electric bills to estimate usage, but our home had been vacant during renovations, and prior to that, only my mother-in-law lived there—so energy usage was minimal. With three people now living here and extensive electrical upgrades in place, our consumption would be very different. Kevin estimated our system would cover 101% of our annual energy needs. So far, he’s been right on the mark. In just four days since going live, we've already netted about 65 kWh back to the grid and that's with our HVAC system running the AC on average 6-8 hours a day.

If you're on the fence about going solar, now is the time to act. Dominion’s current net metering incentives are likely to change within the next year. If you move now, you can still be grandfathered into the existing program.

Overall, had a good experience with Sunbum Solar with our solar panel system design, permitting, and installation. They were much more knowledgeable in their products and the design of the system, and had better prices than competitors that also provided estimates. They were quick and efficient in obtaining the necessary initial permits including through our Homeowners Association. The installation went smoothly, but unfortunately there were some minor issues that had to be corrected to get the final inspection approval which resulted in some delays in getting approval to operate the system. Otherwise, I would have given a 5 star rating. Definitely would recommend them if you are considering a solar system install!

I didn't feel pressured to make an immediate decision, sign anything, or commit to anything right away as I've experienced with other solar system company representatives. Kevin even made recommendations on system accessories to not purchase right away to help make this project more affordable for me. We had an amazing experience working with Kevin and his team from Sunbum Solar. Bottom line - this was a project we had been considering for years, and we are so incredibly happy we finally pulled the trigger. We finally needed a new roof, so we reached out to Kevin to determine what options were available for roof replacement, roof+solar, etc. He had a methodical way of helping us think through different options from a return on investment standpoint, and wasn't pushy for any particular solution. Once we decided, the team got the work done incredibly quickly, at the cost they quoted, with quality that looks great so far.

I want to preface this review with the facts that I did extensive research on solar installs, worked with 2 companies before deciding on Sunbum, and am very familiar with the methods of installation including electrical. I went into this purchase informed. I have to admit though that making this large of a purchase was still difficult.
Kevin spent a good amount of time replying to my questions and revising the initial plans as my knowledge increased and the installation grew and changed from outbuilding top to ground mount. So far, I am very happy with the solar output and the money I am saving and will be saving.
Matt and his crew did an excellent job installing. They listened to the tweaks I wanted during the install and were quite receptive. The panel array looks great in our field and the inverters and electrical boxes on the house look professional. The installation passed on the first inspection.
We’ve been generating power since December 14 and have produced over 3.5MWh. I have the SolarEdge app to monitor production and have just discovered the Dominion Energy app which allows me to view daily power usage and production. Even during these short Winter days with clouds and rain, I am impressed. The longer Spring and Summer days should be awesome.
Part of my research was the 30% tax credit and I will be taking advantage of that in a few days when I file. The credit was a major incentive to install.
The warranty that comes with the install is a nice-to-have, but I realize it is only as good as Sunbum and the panel/inverter manufacturers. I hope you’re reading this Kevin.
Would I do it again, absolutely. Do I recommend Sunbum, yes! If you’re even considering solar, get Kevin out there to let you know your options.
My advice on any project of this size is to do your homework. Know what you want and what you expect.

Overall, my husband and I were very satisfied with SunBum! We were so glad Kevin and his team were able to help us with our solar panels and roof after we had some damage, and our solar company went out of business. Kevin jumped in to help and the process was quick and in all honesty, stress free! Initially, we reached out to them online through their website to see if they would be able to help us with a new roof and our solar panel dilemma. Within 30 minutes, Kevin contacted me directly via phone and then text. The service was great, price was reasonable, communication was excellent and Kevin was very efficient coordinating everything in a very timely manner! We HIGHLY recommend SunBum!

Professional installation at a good price. We had one issue about 12 months after install, but it was covered by warranty and they came out to fix it quickly.

We contracted with Sunbum Solar to install a 28 panel, roughly 12Kw system on our newly constructed home here in Virginia Beach. After receiving 8 proposals from various solar contractors, we selected Sunbum for a variety of reasons including: the original proposal was the most cost effective and remained the low bid even after several firms struggled to match with revised offers, the materials proposed were state of the art and of very high quality (REC panels and Enphase microinverters), the proposal and subsequent contract was clear, fair and of sufficient detail. Similarly, all the interactions and discussions with Kevin Hall were straightforward and devoid of any "sales pitch", or overstated claims that competitors often used.
The design of our home provided several challenges: a flat roof with a membrane surface (TPO), an underlying foam layer to enhance drainage, etc. The original design called for a standard mounting system with would require numerous penetrations. When a crew was preparing the installation, they quickly determined that the planned installation method posed significant problems and the effort was aborted. Subsequently the engineers proposed the use of a ballasted system by Ironridge. While this did cause a significant delay, the system ultimately installed required no roof penetrations, looks great and eliminated the risks associated with the original design. The installation crew was efficient, neat and obviously dedicated to delivering a quality product.
Overall, a very positive experience. We are currently waiting for the green light from the power utility to activate the system. Assuming that process goes well, and we fully expect that it will, we will readily upgrade the review to five stars.

This is a great outfit and Kevin Hall was wonderful to work with. I got tired dealing with the wild wild west cowboys of the big national companies and decided to go with Sunbum, a relatively small local firm, and I was not disappointed. Kevin sized the unit I needed at a competitive price and did not try to oversell. The installation was professional and mostly moved according to schedule, despite the overly zealous Newport News inspectors the job was done right and I couldn't be happier with the system. It's freedom not owing the power company a ton every month. I designed the system to add an EV later, and to Kevin's credit, he agreed to come back 8 months after the fact to do the car charger connection. I got my system installed and commissioned about 1 year ago. Could not be happier. System was sized right and does what it should. The contractual arrangements, installation & system commissioning to operation was smooth & painless. I especially appreciated the straight forward contract when compared to other complicated LOOPHOLE filled contracts from the larger companies. Installation was professionally executed without incident or surprise. It's not often a job of this kind goes by the numbers like this went. I was comfortable & kept informed every step of the way. Within a couple weeks, the job was completed & the city inspecter came & couldn't find anything thus making his visit brief. Permission to operate from the electricity company was long, by no fault of SunBum, but when it came, a simple call was all it took to walk me through turning on the complicated devices (& yes, my 16kw system was a lil bit different than most with a couple extra devices). It turned on without issue & started russeling up sunpower after a soft boot. I godda say....from signing to operation, this installers performance was far above what i thought was going to happen after seeing the horror stories on youtube. I recommend SunBum, hands down. Awesome work!

My experience with Sunbum Solar was excellent. My husband had passed away and I had no idea how to go about installing panels on my roof. I had always wanted them because it helps the environment, and Kevin walked me through every step. Every time I called he was always available and got right back to me.

Putting my review at a 2 star because this is definitely a case of caveat emptor aka "buyer beware."

The installation was executed well but I would recommend anyone proceed with caution as I definitely feel as they though walked the line of capitalizing on a scam and honestly pushing you towards tax fraud.

They will tout high end tax return savings that would only be produced by claiming the roof work as part of the solar install which is 100% tax fraud. When they are called out on it, they play stupid and suggest you consult with a tax professional.

Ultimately they will break it down like this:

* Expect $50 a month in SRECs. - I've had one issued in 4 months for $40.

* Expect $xxxxx.xx from tax credits - Expectations are not reality. I had to have them separate the roof costs from the solar so that I would not be committing fraud. This is a horrible and dishonest sales tactic.

* Expect to save $xxx.xx on your power bill based off this chart - I question how these charts are even produced. If you examine the energy production ceiling for each panel, the math does not add up.

Ultimately, I would say steer clear if you can. My goal was to just break even on the monthly payments on the solar loan by reducing my energy bill enough so that I would have a net zero payment.

Instead I'm stuck with a monthly payment to them and maybe a 10-20% reduction in my energy bill.

I would reduce them to 1-star if I weren't being objective, but they did do a good job with the roof install but this is ultimately a misleading product.

My suggestion: STEER CLEAR

Pricing was great. They did everything they said they would do. Highly professional and answered all of my questions. Would highly recommend!

It took two years of searching and over seven installation quotes before finding Sunbum Solar. PV is only economic if you don't overpay for the system. Sunbum sold me the same system that the biggest installers in Tidewater wanted to charge 40% more for. I saved over $20,000!!!
Even with the very low price, the tax credits are so large that I will not have to pay income tax for the next two years! I will never again have to pay more than a Basic Service fee to Dominion. Instead, I am generating SRECs that Dominion will have to buy from me.
I could not be happier!

Update 4/4/23
Finally got the issue below resolved after several months. I am glad that Sunbum is committed to resolve the issue!

We needed to replace our roof earlier this summer and our roofing company recommended the roof and solar bundle financing. We thought it was a good idea and went ahead with the solar option. To make a long story short, the wrong house was used for solar generation calculation as the software is pulling from google map and several people from Sunbum that came to the house didn’t catch it (including myself). Once I raised this issue to Kevin that we are not generating enough solar and still paying Dominion. Kevin proposed few options to resolve the issue but so far has not act on it. So needless to say this could be a 5 stars review on customer service recovery but today it’s a 1 star as I don’t feel like there is an urgency from Sunbum to get this resolved. The lesson is to triple check on the proposal and scrutinize the solar placements. I will provide an update later once this is resolved and hopefully soon.

Everything from start to finish was a pleasant experience. The roofing company was in and out in a day and the clean up was great. No nails in my tires. Kevin and Rick were right there to guide me through everything. Solar panels went up in a day and a half and I was switched about a week later. Thanks Sunbum Solar

First, I interviewed 5 solar companies. After each interview I learned additional questions to follow up from the previous interviews. Sunbum/Kevin were willing and able to answer all my questions. From start to finish, Kevin, Aceine, Matt, and Gary were available and to answer questions. The panel install began and ended on time. The workers were professional, took time to explain what was to be done and left the roof cleaner than when they arrived. Gary the electrician was FANTASTIC. They ran into a few issues with my electrical panel, but these were remedied within a few days. If I have a complaint, it would be with the inspectors. Since solar panels in Virginia are relatively new, the inspectors may not be up to speed on codes. It took 4 visits from the inspector. The first inspection failed and that was Sunbum's fault. The subsequent failures were due to the inspector finding new items to ding them on. Had the inspector provided a thorough inspection, Sunbum could have corrected all of the issues the first time. I highly recommend Sunbum. Install was completed in early Oct 2022, so as of this review I have not seen the energy production for a month. Statistics look good, so I am hopeful.

Sunbum Solar did an excellent job. Always on time. Did everything to help Satisfy all cosmetics, even by running the cable in the wall of my house so that it would not show on the outside. I would highly recommend SunBum Solar.

Matt the Project Manager came onsite and saw the project all the way through. Excellent Employee and you can tell he cares about this being more than satisfactory to us the client.

Price was excellent, communications was excellent. Kudo's to the whole process.

Now to see how the spec'd job saves money. This will take time.

Initially, I was concerned as there were some communication issues. As the process moved forward, I gained more confident/positive about the experience as staff came to the same conclusion and resolved the matter. Most importantly, My Energy Consultant, Les Smith was a saint in that he closed many of the gaps of communication and kept me abreast of all the pertinent issues to allay any concerns/fears I may have felt. "He's the best and I'm grateful that I had him looking out for me. If all your consultants conduct themselves in the same fashion, Ion need not worry about their place in the industry. Again, we are so excited about this our decision to form this relationship and would recommend highly to anyone interested.
