Terry Hall and his great professional crew remodeled our two very outdated bathrooms and fixed our roof leaks. We have been extremely pleased with their quality of work, detailed communication, respectfulness of our property & home, ability to listen to questions and provide full answers. We love the way our bathrooms look and function; and the fact that our roof no longer leaks during windy rain events is fantastic!

Square Deal Construction did an interior remodel of my house plus a re-do of the front and back porches in the summer of 2022, and I could not be happier with both the process and the results. I’m sure I tried their patience during the planning stage because I kept on adding and changing things, but if so, they never let on and accommodated me cheerfully every time. Their knowledge of how things should be done or could be done better was invaluable, and their attention to detail, both in the planning and executing stages, was exemplary and much appreciated. The remodel involved embedding new boards into existing wooden flooring, a very tricky proposition. However, they did such a good job that no one can tell the difference between old and new. They even dealt with the fact that my husband and I had to live in the house during the remodel, making sure that we were as comfortable as possible and cleaning everything up every evening before they left for the day. Everyone working on the job was personable, thoughtful, and helpful, and it was fun getting to know them all. The remodel has turned our house into something better than I ever dreamed, and I am both happy and grateful for the wonderful job they did. I highly recommend their services if you are looking for quality service and results.

The process they follow to scope and bid the project provides confidence that the project will be done on time and on budget. Just called to ask a question. It was answered. They seem helpful. I don't really know this company well enough to review them at 100%.

Square Deal construction offered a brand new way of seeing remodeling. There is so much to share about how they exceeded our expectations so I will just touch on the high points. I will share these chronologically. Upon our first meeting we found Terry Hall, owner, to be very knowledgeable and straight forward. We had concerns about hiring a contractor and all of our concerns were addressed in this first meeting. Upon the second meeting he brought his design team, Who took detailed measurements and photographs and listened and took notes about our vision. Soon after we received computer images that helped us define the scope of our project. As we began the actual remodeling of our bathroom as well as installing a sliding door we found the carpenters to be exceptionally courteous. At the end of each day the jobsite was clean. The project was completed on time. The cost was defined and consistent. Some of the high notes was when I needed to take my blind dog out for her walk and the lead carpenter was willing to move his tools so that she could get by easily. Also I received a gift basket from the office and in it were diabetic dog treats. They were so empathetic and conscientious of our needs. We are thrilled with the outcome of our remodel. The craftsmanship is exceptional. We would definitely hire square deal Construction again and recommend them to our friends and family.

Update: Thank you to Square Deal for the response to my review. I was not asked in the email exchanges I had with Marne whether we had any existing plans for the remodel or if we would require design services. I have a Revit model of our house, along with 2D plans with measurements, callouts, etc and a materials list. None of this was requested. Everything is specified in the existing plans from finishes and materials, to outlet and light spacing, to appliances. I maintain that $3750 is an outrageous amount of money to charge for an initial consultation before even entering into a formal contract for a remodel.

As for the consultation fee ($3750) AND the $334-667/ft sq "estimated" cost for the remodel itself especially given that no materials or other specifics of the house were discussed and a site visit wasn't conducted, I shared Marnie's response with several contractors I know and they too found the estimate to be extravagant.

I do appreciate the non-apology. It helps me affirm that my choice to not engage Square Deal was a sound one.

Original Review: I contacted Square Deal on the recommendation of a family member regarding a complete remodel of our kitchen and laundry room and installation of a central HVAC system. Our house is one storey, 1100 ft sq; the kitchen and laundry room total 225 ft sq.

I asked for a to-the-studs remodel on those two spaces: electrical, insulation, sheetrock, flooring, cabinets, countertops. There were complicating factors (sink plumbing needed to move several inches in order to center the sink on the wall, door to the laundry room needed to move 30 inches to the left, gas line for stove possibly needed to move several inches to the left, kitchen needed lead and asbestos testing/possible abatement) but Marne said that the work I requested was within her scope.

Marne seemed interested in the project until I sent in pictures, at which point I didn't hear from her for another two weeks and had to reach out to her myself.

In her response, Marne gave me a "quote" of $75,000 to $150,000 for the work needed and asserted that Square Deal would require $3,750 to cover their design services, lead and asbestos testing, etc up front in order to give me a more accurate quote. To put it in perspective, that's $334 to $667/ft sq. Even subtracting the cost of the central HVAC system (for which I was quoted ~$20k by 2 independent companies), that's still $245 to $578/ft sq., which is outrageous considering that the average locally seems to be $150-180/ft sq.

If you are considering this company I strongly suggest you get quotes from at least two other competitors. Based on this experience, I certainly can't recommend them.

Terry just came out to look at a situation with my property. It didn't turn out that he had a good solution for us, but he seemed like a great guy and will be the first person I call the next time I need construction help.

We had a great remodel experience with Square Deal Construction. Terry listened to what we wanted, offered his experience for a better design, suggested excellent products and delivered what was promised, on budget. Terry and Jeremy, the foreman, knew when mistakes were made and corrected them. They were continually concerned with our satisfaction. Their work crews are polite, professional, and communicated with us. Everyone was a pleasure to work with.

Terry was recommended to us by a good friend . We wanted a new shower and new bathroom counter and sinks. He came out and gave us an estimate which we thought was fair. The job was completed in about a week. The two fellows doing the work were very polite and did a wonderful job and made very little mess, which was cleaned up every night before they left. We absolutely love our new shower. Any other work we need down the road I will definitely call Square Deal.

I have no idea what the service is like, but they have a $150 consult and estimate fee. You can get it back if you close within 10 days. I have not shopped around enough to know if this is a fair deal or common in the industry, but I will say as a first time caller into this industry it was a little sticker shock.

Kris Mikkelborg and his crew have done several remodeling projects at our clinic, Newberg Family Dental. They have consistently gone above and beyond the normal with their attention to detail, customer service and workmanship. They have left the job site spotlessly clean after the project (when does that ever happen?) and have been there to follow up our concerns.
We have a new remodel project, and are excited to work with them again!
