Ruach Home Services

Jed Harvey of Ruach Home Services was a nice enough guy and the quality of some his work was pretty decent (even if some material choices like on doors and closets were quite cheap and will need to be replaced) but that’s where it ends. This guy was in way over his head on so many elements of my whole home renovation project. I don’t think general contracting is his sweet spot - he mostly does mold remediation and water restoration.

He doesn’t know codes, his communication was terrible (at best confusing and at worst deceptive), he has no business acumen, and he can’t project manage his way out of a paper bag. Jed refused to take responsibility for managing several vendors and often missed meetings and appointment, occasionally just refusing to come. I had to manage the majority of this project myself which was frustrating since that was the service I was paying for.

His lack of experience and his general arrogance caused numerous delays and countless failed inspections. His miscalculations and overestimates cost me thousands of dollars in wasted tile and building materials. And many of his standard practices seem to go against what is normal for the industry at least when I consulted friends and family who had done similar renovation work (I had to buy my own grout, door hinges, faucets etc. and he tried to claim that mudding, taping and sanding wasn’t part of standard drywall installation but something I would have to either outsource or pay more for…that was a little insane!).

Jed’s team of guys are nice but seem to follow his lead in terms of general inexperience. It’s commendable how he teaches and works with them but I really would have preferred if they learned on someone else’s house! I was fortunate to live on site during some of the construction and within close driving distance for the bulk of it. This was necessary because I had to keep such a close eye on everything due to Jed’s diversified and distracted attention and inability to manage. Every time I went over to check progress I discovered numerous mistakes. I don’t think there was a single element they got right the first time! I watched them install and reinstall closet shelving at least 6 times, and the amount of lumber and materials they wasted because they did all the cuts wrong repeatedly made my heart hurt for our planet. They were also terrible at cleaning up after themselves. My cabinets still have piles of screws and nails stuck behind them and we had to have a plumber come (at my expense) and unclog lines because of all building material and debris that got stuck in there and wasn’t cleaned out.

But the worst was how they ruined my air vents and almost $40K worth of new duct and HVAC work because Jed refused to follow the repeated guidance from the HVAC company. That was devastating, super expensive and so easily avoidable. But he thought he knew better than the experts.

All in all it wasn’t a great experience and it lasted at least twice as long as it should have (almost year after an initial estimate of 5 months!). If you’re trying to get a short and simplistic one day job done then maybe Jed is your guy. But if you’re looking to do anything that requires thought or management definitely look elsewhere.

Jed and team helped us do water damage restoration and mold remediation for our master full bath after buying a house. He kept us up to date with pictures of his findings and detailed explanations. Then finished it up with a beautifully renovated bathroom that fit our vision. His team always checked in at the end of each day to make sure they were going in the right direction and even repainted the walls when we realized we gave them the wrong paint. Would definitely recommend this team for both water damage and renovation services!

Ruach was able to address my water damaged ceiling and work with me on its repair. Jed patiently explained to me what needed doing, how the work was to be carried out and supervised to its completion. He also helped with unrelated drywall patchwork, which is highly appreciated. I am quite satisfied and recommend Ruach services!

A couple of red flags here - nothing but 5 star reviews and I call a business number and someone answers with "Hello" instead of a business name; these should have tipped me off. Since I was desperate I ignored the flags and set up an appointment anyway. Jed did come over that afternoon, arriving later that the time he said he would be there. We chatted about the work I needed done to remediate the damage from a broken pipe and he took a few cursory measurements. He did tell me the ceiling couldn't be patched without us always seeing a tape line (I believe that is true) and he recommended scraping all the texture off the whole ceiling and repainting. He took about 50 pictures of my ceiling and promised an estimate by the weekend. This was last Wednesday and I haven't heard anything from Jed.

If I have this much trouble when I'm trying to GIVE someone business, imagine what it will be like if there's something wrong with the work being done.

Jed and his crew at Rusch Home Services took care of everything following our discovery of water near the toilet in our basement. It turned out to be from a cracked stack pipe — the conduit for sewage. Because of the health hazard they had to mitigate immediately, which they did over a weekend. First, this is the best experience we have had with a home contractor, ever. We needed a tub conversion and shower remodel. Jed (the owner) provided us with clear and flexible plans to accomplish the look and functionality we were going for. In every part of the planning stage, we knew the price of the basic alternatives, the costs of changes, the estimates of labor, the estimates of materials, and the basic timeframes of work. How refreshing!

The actual work: Jed assigned two gentlemen to our job for about a week’s worth of work. They were courteous and efficiently cleaned up the worksite at the end of each day. Their workmanship was top-notch, and I mean really top-notch. Jed personally inspected progress periodically and answer our questions on the spot.

Contractor/Client relationship: If, like us, you live in the DC/Baltimore area, and you are so tired of big-box contractors that come to your house, give you some huge opaque and inflexible estimate, and then demand that you sign a contract that same day…. Then this is the company for you. The best home remodel project under the best of circumstances is still expensive and stressful, and we appreciate Jed’s honesty and forthright approach. We will return to this contractor for any future remodel projects.

Ruach Home Services once again came through when needed. Tony is always easy to communicate with and prioritizes safety. I've worked with him and his team on and off now for the past two years on various home improvement projects. The most recent projects included several repairs due to water intrusion issues in my guest bedroom and basement. They completed repairs on my bedroom subfloor and walls due to water damage from my chimney. In my basement, services included mold remediation, major drywall repair on all four walls, and replacing baseboards. Tony also confirmed a major safety issue with my electrical panel that other contractors ignored. His crew, with electrician Howard, went to work right away to replace the panel and coordinated safety inspections. This company continues to provide top notch service, I would highly recommend.

Tony was so very responsive and thorough in his exam of our small leak. It was revealed that a finishing nail (from an unrelated project completed 5 yrs ago) had pierced our pipe, allowing a small leak to penetrate our subfloor and damage a joist, and unbeknownst to us, hazardous mold had developed as well. He filmed every part of his discovery and explained each step he was taking to find the source of the leak. He & crew immediately stopped the leak, and repaired the pipe, and performed mold mitigation procedures right away. His videos and explanations to our insurance adjuster resulted in immediate payment of our claim.

Ruach Home Services recently completed the assembly and installation of all new kitchen cabinets and a hood vent in my home. They were great to work with, very professional and courteous. The cabinets were from Ikea, so they were assembled by the team. Jed worked with me to accommodate a change in delivery days. The team also made suggestion for changes in the design which made the kitchen more attractive and functional. They always left the work areas as neat as possible at the end of the day. Ruach Home Services was not only able to repair the termite damage in my garage, replace , refinish and stain my hardwood floors, they also removed all the old wallpaper, replaced drywall, painted, made plumbing revisions, installed plumbing fixtures and a dishwasher, installed new toilets and always cleaned up after themselves. Ruach Home Services, and its owner, Tony Harvey, did an outstanding job remediating a long-neglected black mold problem in my basement and entry hall. I first hired him to take care of mold that had grown on the vaulted ceiling in my hallway. He and his very professional staff removed the drywall from the ceiling and other affected areas, treated the mold, then replaced the drywall and repainted disturbed areas. I could not tell there had ever been a problem. Although Tony counseled that I should have my basement checked for mold, I delayed. Later, after another basement flood, with the basement mold spreading, I called him again for help. He came immediately, drained the water, and assessed the mold situation, which was extreme. He and his staff took care of getting a dumpster, removing furniture and other stuff from my basement, and waiting for me to decide what to save and what to trash. In the end, he had to remove all of the drywall from the basement. When he saw what was behind the drywall, he advised me that I should consult a foundation and waterproofing expert due to unusual features of my foundation. Bottom line: I feel very lucky to have had Tony and Ruach tackle my problem. They are responsive, knowledgeable, professional, and fair. Big plus: Tony is a licensed contractor, and experienced in many construction fields (important to me), and all of his workers are extremely pleasant to work with.

I didn't know what to expect or what I wanted when I started my bathroom project. I was wary of working with contractors due to bad experiences in the past, but Jed (Tony) and his team exceeded my expectations at every step. They took a small dingy bathroom and turned it into a peaceful oasis. Jed guided me through the process and made sure everything was to my satisfaction at the end. RUACH Home Services really came to the rescue in immediately responding to our call for help in stemming a water leak under our kitchen sink, mitigating the damage that ensued, and restoring walls, ceilings, cabinets, carpeting and hardwood flooring to their original condition (and in some cases, better than the original condition). They also promptly and consistently interfaced with our insurance company to ensure the work was entirely paid by insurance. Tony and his team were AMAZING, and their work simply exceptional, really, where do I even begin?! We had a slow but major leak in our upstairs bathroom which caused major problems in our downstairs dining room ceiling. As new homeowners, this was our first major home repair, so naturally we were worried and anxious. It was intimidating searching for the right contractor for the job, so when we found Tony of Ruach Home Services, we truly hit the jackpot! Tony demonstrated a high level of professionalism and he was very responsive and thorough in his communications. He made the clumsy insurance process a piece of cake by leading us through step by step!

Once the work started, Ruach Home Services did not disappoint. Tony was receptive to our questions (and I had a lot!), and our specific requests. We were even able to get custom electrical work done to the house during the repair (which he was able to invoice separately) despite our requests being so last minute! I am a stickler for details, and I was thoroughly impressed with their drywall repair; you would have never known there was a 6ft wide hole in the ceiling! Additionally, Tony and Sergio did an IMMACULATE job on the upstairs bathroom tiling, installations, and repairs.

I found Tony through Facebook marketplace, I had 7 quotes set up for the same day to do tile work in my basement because I had a very tight schedule. Tony was on time, he was professional, he gave me a good price, and he was amazing to work with. He is a contractor that is a man of his word and does quality work. When he came out, I didn’t have to point out to him that my floor had a patch that was not level, his attention to detail was incredible and the way he anticipated other needs that I had not thought about put my mind at ease that I hired the best man for the job. He finished the job a day earlier than estimated. In addition to Tony’s professionalism, he is a really nice guy overall and he gives you nothing but good vibes.
