We bought a fairly nice home in January '24 that needed a new roof. Putting a new roof on is a major commitment, and getting it wrong is a terrifying thought. What brand, what line of shingle, what color? Here in the South, GAF is by far the most used shingle. You could spend weeks reviewing shingles and still not know which is the best option. I called Robin with Red Letter Roofing to ask his opinion as he seemed like an approachable guy based on his website, customer reviews, as well as the name of his business. I wasn't wrong! Robin picked up the phone and gladly answered my questions. What really helped is that he was able to reference two homes he had roofed -right next to each other- one with GAF HDZ shingles and one with GAF's higher end UHDZ shingles. This allowed a direct comparison of the two, side by side. We opted to go with the UHDZ as the additional expense was reasonable and easily justified being that the shingle is a little thicker and has a much more pronounced visual texture to it. Initially I wasn't sure I wanted the roof to "pop" that much, but I also realized that over time every roof fades a bit, so my theory is this roof will look better when it does. The other thing Robin did for us was to bring us a couple of sheets of two different colors to our home so I could put them on my roof and actually see how they looked with our paint. Boy am I glad I did! We ended up picking Weathered Wood which is a remarkably flexible color... It will look grey on some homes and more brown on others; It really changes based on the color of the home, but in a good way, making it very versatile. Another benefit of going with the UHDZ over the HDZ is that the thicker shingle makes for a quieter roof when it rains. With the old roof you couldn't miss a rain, but now I'm often surprised to see that it rained when I look outside. And finally I insisted that my shingles be of the same manufacturing lot, to make sure we didn't have any color surprises. Sure enough the supplier delivered a mixed lot of shingles which Robin immediately had swapped out to make sure they all matched. That's the standard all contractors should live up to, but rarely do anymore. The roof looks great, the crew cleaned up well, and we ended up with a product that's a cut above without spending as much extra as we were expecting. Definitely recommend Red Letter, and I hope my review helps the next person with some of the challenges that come with installing a new roof!
