Joe Silbernagel "Little Joe" was the #1 backhoe operator for Northern Improvement for over 40 years. My father was my HERO. I remember being 6 years old and Dad was doing work by Pioneer Elementary, where we went to school. After school most of the children stayed to watch my Dad dig with his backhoe. A little girl standing next to me was excited watching my Dad and said "Wow". I remember looking at her and saying "Hey! He's MY DAD"!! Throughout the years, I always loved stopping by Dad's job sites and bringing watermelon, etc. One job site was just off the I-94 ramp to Fargo. I brought Dad lunch and water and one of his co-workers was in the ditch with a large measuring stick. Mind you, construction crew can get very "colorful" expressing themselves... Dad's crew member shouted up to me, "HEY!! Your Dad is so GOOD, that if I had to itch my...., HE IS THE ONLY ONE I would trust down in this ditch"!! LOL!! I am now 60 years old and hold all of the precious memories of my Mom and Dad daily close to my heart. And, every time I see the green Northern Improvement symbol, I smile with much pride and love as my Father was very proud to be part of the Northern Improvement Family.
