I find it disheartening that this company has the review score it does, as my experience was much different (and makes me feel like I can’t even use star ratings to choose quality businesses anymore).
TLDR - They do not provide itemized estimates or invoices, they charge you additional trip fees when the additional trips are due to their forgetfulness, and their warranty is only good until they decide otherwise.
I hired this company to stop water from coming into my house and basement whenever it rained. I had already had the original door replaced by Lowe’s, but the issue persisted and Lowe’s claimed they had done their job and installed a door. Mr Handyman felt that they could fix my issue if they took the door back out, sealed around the door further, and replaced it. They did this on August 16th, I signed off on the work and paid my invoice of $1377.25. The next time it rained, water came into the house again. At the same time, 6 days after the work was supposedly completed, they told me the worker had forgotten to do something and needed to come back, which would be less than an hour of work. I let them know I was also still having an issue with water.
The worker came back on August 27th. He removed a piece of trim and shoved several shims in the space, then replaced the trim - that is what he had forgotten to do and would have taken 5 minutes had he done it the first day. He then applied a bunch of caulk/silicone around the door and raised the rubber piece under the door to help with any water. I was then charged another $235. Again, they did not provide an estimate for coming back out, and never once was I aware of a $70 trip charge. Additionally, the mistake of forgetting the shims was on them, and their work is supposed to be warrantied, which in my mind means that entire visit should not have cost anything.
They refused to refund even the trip fee, saying it was not possible to refund and they were technically still within my original estimate (which was some text conversations of very general numbers - I should have taken that as a red flag). This is poor business practice all around and I felt deceived and taken advantage of. If I sign off on a job and pay my invoice, that’s the end of what I expect to be charged. Not another surprise visit because something was missed by the business.
Unfortunately, after that visit the leaking was actually worse (soaked an entire large bath towel and ran into the basement). I reached out again. To their credit, they did send another contractor quickly and he once again removed the door and installed a sill pan. He assured me that this fixes 99% of these issues and he thought it would be the fix. I did not pay for any of this visit, as they said it was covered under warranty and they wanted to make it right. They made an off handed comment that they qualify it as an issue with the door but they had worked on it and so would cover the costs.
The leaking continues. However, this time it was several days after the rain that water came in. I contacted them on a Thursday to inform them, they were quick to reply and said they would talk to the contractor and call me back shortly. I had not heard anything by Monday so reached out again. They now say that there is nothing else they can do for me and it’s an issue with the door, and that if the sill pan overflows that can’t be helped. I informed them the sill pan is not overflowing since this is days after it rains, the water must be sitting somewhere. They have not replied and I assume will not. So I guess their warranty is only good if they decide they will honor it. And now I’m out $1612.25 (in addition to the >$2000 I paid to have the door installed in the first place) and still have water entering my house.
I’m sure they will have a rebuttal and explanation to this review, but I’m able to provide pictures, text conversations and invoices to back up all of the facts noted. Please do yourselves a favor and find other contractors to actually fix your house issues.
