McLaughlin Design and Construction (MDC) designed and built for us a new home of 2150 square feet, with attached fully-finished garage in the rural part of White Salmon, Washington. We broke ground 28-Aug-23, moved in 3-May-2024.

Our overall experience with MDC could not have been better. Breff and Lisa listen to clients extremely well. They communicate (email, text, phone, in person) frequently, responsively, and clearly. Mainly, they make the whole process, design and construction, as stress-free as possible, efficient, and a pleasure. They do great work and they do it promptly. MDC is a design-build firm: They handle both. This greatly reduces the chance of miscommunication.

The old saying about projects is: The key things on a project are: Cost, schedule, and performance (or quality); you get to choose two of those. On this house project with MDC, we got all three. We are thrilled with the quality of the design, materials, and construction. We came in $20,000 under budget (Breff and Lisa are diligent and careful with your money). And we moved in 8 months after we broke ground (which is very fast for this area).

Design Phase: Breff very intelligently started the design with a baseline design that he knew would be close to what we wanted (we had seen a house that he had designed and built and liked it); but was somewhat smaller than he knew our final size would be. This was smart because making a design larger is much easier than making it smaller. He worked closely with us to refine the design and make it match our dreams. This went on through several iterations of the design. Breff and Lisa came to our home to review and revise the design. Especially helpful was the fly-through (or walk-through) feature of the software he uses, which helps people visualize the design who are not as familiar with design drawings. He made changes in real time to the design and the software would update the design instantly and we could see the effect of the changes.

We had to work to keep the design within our budget. We did this through several rounds of changes to reduce the overall cost, before we began construction. His strong knowledge of the cost of materials and construction techniques was critical to this process. Breff was clear and forthcoming with his advice on the design: He told us his opinion and then always cheerfully made any changes we wanted.

The construction phase went very smoothly and rapidly. We were impressed with the quality, diligence, and work ethic of all of the subcontractors that MDC used. It was clear that they had good relationships with high quality subcontractors and knew how to get the most out of them. In addition, MDC clearly has good relationships with the county inspectors and other county officials. Inspections were performed very promptly and issues with county offices were resolved easily and quickly. Breff and Lisa were diligent to look after little things such as keeping the work site cleaned up. And, perhaps most importantly, they were present, in person on the work site, for every important activity, at least at its start, to ensure that the work was being done correctly per the design and at the expected quality level and to answer any questions that the subcontractors had. The importance of this personal attention would be hard to overemphasize.

One of the challenges in building a house, especially for first-timers like us, is selecting all the materials that go into it, like flooring, fixtures, and paint. Lisa made this as easy as possible with a spreadsheet that included the need dates for each selection. This allowed us to prioritize our choices. MDC was also very helpful in providing good sources for the materials.

Breff also provided periodic reviews of the budget and accounting which was helpful for us to confirm that we were staying within (under!) our budget.

Overall, a wonderful experience building our dream home with Breff and Lisa. We cannot recommend McLaughlin Design and Construction highly enough.

They are a 10! I could not have imagined doing this project with anyone other then McLaughlin Design & Construction. Breff (and his project manager Lisa!) took a vision and dream and turned it into reality. They actually listen to the customer. The project turned out perfect. Provides out standing service and communication for an incredible value.
What a treat to go from an original 1960's kitchen to a new modern version.

We built a different type of house than the now common (IMO) modern box design/flat roof style. The end result came out amazing and it shows how Breff McLaughlin can handle any unique situation you throw at him.

We had a great experience with Breff planning and designing our dream home! He took our ideas and created everything we hoped for! We loved that we could see the layout and design virtually through his 3D computer program! He had so many great ideas we didn’t even know we needed. His experience and knowledge of construction was invaluable! We would definitely recommend Breff for any project!

St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hood River, OR is doing a major expansion to our existing church. We interviewed four architectural firms a few years back and choose McLaughlin Design. They were a get fit for us and provided 3D renderings that we felt were beneficial to showing parishioners exactly what the new church would like like. Head architect Breff McLaughlin has become not just our project designer, but also part of our building committee. Breff is always available when needed and has wonderful insight and suggestions. St. Mary's couldn't be happier and McLaughlin Design is taking us to the finish line.

My wife and I were fortunate to receive a recommendation from a local realtor for McLaughlin Design & Construction to assist in rehabilitating our 1904 farmhouse in Hood River. Although our house had a fantastic location and solid 'bones,' it needed extensive rehabilitation. This was a true project house, requiring considerable skill to bring it back to life. After meeting with the team at McLaughlin Design, we were confident they could meet our needs. When the project was completed, McLaughlin Design not only met but exceeded all our expectations.
Before we could start construction, a total redesign of the existing floor plan was necessary. While we had ideas, we realized there was a considerable gap between ideas and reality. Breff McLaughlin bridged this gap with his design abilities, construction knowledge, and, most importantly, his local understanding of The Gorge resources required for the project. Breff's redesign incorporated concepts, construction techniques, and materials that allowed us to build our proverbial dream home.
Today, our home is a gathering place for our kids, grandchildren, and friends who routinely visit. Many of our friends have remarked on how well our house accommodates guests. The credit for how well our home lives goes entirely to Breff McLaughlin's vision."

Breff built an amazing house. It stands out even in an upscale community. He took my own personal ideas of my dream home and created something far better than I could have imagined on my own. He is a gifted architect and a solid contractor. Communication was fun and easy. I made a good decision entrusting him to bring it all to life. Couldn’t be happier!

Breff is so fun to work with! He is also very approachable. Love working him. I can not say enough good things about him and his work. He has helped many of my clients and friends over the years and we all adore him!

He has a talent for listening and is able to translate what he hears into a stunning design. Give him your parameters and watch him go!

His guidance and expertise will put your mind at ease. He is worth every penny! I would highly recommend Breff and know anyone he works with will feel the same.

He is fair, honest and really good at what he does. I highly recommend him.

I love the design work he did for us!! So happy.

My wife and I hired Breff and his team to completely remodel our 1980s home. We had worked with another architect and were dissatisfied with the results. We hired Breff to take over the project and he quickly developed a vision for what we were trying to accomplish and developed plans that exceeded our expectations. His deep experience and knowledge of construction was incredibly helpful in finding innovative and cost effective approaches to the project. We are very happy with the result. He is well known for high end, modern homes and we were really impressed with his ability to modernize a dated home into what looks and feels like a cutting edge architectural design.

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
