First, I read the reviews and make decisions based on those reviews so I am a firm believer that the reviews should reflect the good interactions along with the bad. Still difficult to rate someone like this though.

I had him come out to give me a quote on taking down a makeshift closet someone put up in the garage of a house I bought, and to also install two dog doors. None of which I thought would be any trouble for an experienced handyman. He said it would take him 3 days to do the work. I made arrangements to be home from work for the agreed 3 days. It took 5 days, thus having to be home from work an extra day, and he worked well into the night on the 5th day. Along with vastly underestimating the time needed, he admitted to having to take more time "because his blades were dull". He also cut through a stud to reinstall a light switch when the easiest way and more proper way was to just cut drywall on the other side of the stud and attach to the stud on that side. While witnessing this, I started to pay more attention to how he struggled with other aspects of the work.

So what ended up happening was on the 5th day when he thought he would only be here a couple of hours past 6, he did not leave until around 10:30PM, when I must leave the house around 5:30AM the next day to go to work. Also, before he left, he said that I owned him $600 more than the quote for the extra time. My question is: Why must I pay 33% more for a job he underestimated and that the person obviously struggle with the work, was questionable on how to accomplish the work (thus part of the struggle) and self admittedly did not have the proper tools or at least blades that were not dull, thus taking more time.... and they turn around and charge me extra for.

I am going to pay him the total amount he wants, just to be done with this ordeal. That in itself should be enough said.

He is a pleasant person, and it was very apparent he was frustrated with himself, but if the job at hand has any small amount of complexity to it, I would hesitate to consider him again.

If you're looking for a handyman to be honest about his ability to do the job, to do the job right, to communicate, to be on time....this is the guy. I had a gutter that came loose from the house. James came to look at it and said at that time that he was not sure what to do to fix it but would set an appointment to check it further and fix if he could. He arrived at the appointment time and checked out possible repair options. He let me know how each option would work and the cost. After starting the job, he was able to attach the gutter better than his initial thought. Then in few weeks, after a big rain, he called back to see how the gutter was holding up. I was impressed with his detail, attention to the issue and especially the fact that he followed up to check on his work.

James of Makaleha Handyman LLC is the best!!!
He was working for and with me for a couple of years, being our handyman for all different repairs and remodels at our property management company where we operate vacation rentals. If something is broken you need fast repair and a reliable, trustworthy, honest and good person who does quality work. That is James. Give him a call. I recommend him and his services to every one out there. It is with a heavy heart that he moved away and we don't have him close by anymore.
Thank you James for all you did......

Service questions

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
