Great experience overall. The quote, design, and build team were easy to work with. Good communications really helped us out in getting the build completed quicker than the initial plan. Our detached ADU build, overall, went pretty smoothly, and quickly. We loved working with HUG and would do so again.

The entire team at Hug has been incredible. The office staff was very helpful (above abd beyond) throughout the process of making selections and answering financial questions. The work crews from demolition to finish work were skilled, professional and polite and always left the work site cleaned up at the end of the day. Our project manager, Matt was always very responsive when we called with questions or issues . He maintained a very active role throughout the project . Matt was "Client Focused!" Communication throughout the process was very transparent either through direct communication with staff when possible or 24/7 utilizing the Buildertrend application. We are very happy with our new bathroom, walk-in closet, family room floors and slider!

It's tough to pick a rating for Hug. On one hand, it was definitely not the experience we wanted for our remodel, but on the other, compared to what I have heard from other people with other contractor experiences, it really was better than average.

First, the good:
-They were always courteous and generally responsive to our requests and inquiries
-The project was completed nearly on time and close to the original estimate, which from what I understand of construction is a rarity
-Other than a few glaring issues, the quality really is quite good, and we are happy with the final product

So why only two stars?
-Painting quality: our single biggest issue. During the process of talking to various team members, we were told that the painting had been done by an apprentice and that they failed to have it reviewed by a more senior painter in time to do anything. The house is filled with spots where paint bled through the tape onto surfaces where it wasn't supposed to be, and while they tried to clean it up after the fact, there was ultimately no way to fix it. Beyond that, there is paint splatter everywhere, including all over our wooden fireplace mantel (they came back and cleaned it off, but in the process they also stripped all of the aged varnish that was on it), at least one window and the newly installed hardware in the bathroom. The longer we're here, the more we find issues with the paint. They did ultimately give us a small refund for the paint quality, which we appreciated, but what we wanted was a good job, not a cheap one.
-Internal communication: there were three main Hug employees that we worked with, plus the electrician who was a subcontractor. Frequently one party would tell us we could do something only for that to either not make it into the plan or for another member to tell us it would be impossible.
-Electrical plan: this could be included under communication, but I think it deserves its own bullet. At no point during the project was there any sort of review or signoff on what the electricians would do. No maps of lights or switches, no selection of fixtures, etc. The only planning we did was with a representative from the subcontractor, who walked through with us discussing what we wanted and taking minimal notes. This led to multiple rounds of revisions, including change orders for several thousand dollars. There was a stark contrast between the level of planning that went into the electrical work and the rest of the project, like cabinets and countertops.

There were other minor annoyances, like the quality of cleanup and the disregard for our property that was left in the house in areas not specifically being worked on, but none of that really compares with our dissatisfaction on the above items. We chose Hug, despite them being more expensive than competitors, because we assumed that the higher price tag would mean a clean, professional final product. Ultimately, we don't feel like that's what we got.

(Last two photos are before the remodel. The rest are of the final product)

Love the downstairs layout very much. The kitchen with a great storage/seating island and walk-in pantry is very well designed and compliments the open concepts that are so popular these days. The attention to details paid to finishes shows to be very well done. I like the upstairs bedroom layouts too. The fan lights in the bedrooms are modern and nice. All in all, this home is very well designed and well built. It’s earned my 5 star rating.

They were very easy to work with, they built my parents new home after the grey fire and everything went very smooth! Would recommend to anyone.

We have been EXTREMELY happy with HUG! We got a later start than others after the fire, but now, in talking to other neighbors, we are ahead of most of them. It's looking like our house will be finished the end of August! Nathan was wonderful in dealing with our insurance adjuster, and Robbie, our project manager, has been fantastic to work with. He keeps us updated daily, and has been so helpful in helping us make decisions on things and stay in budget, which made this rebuilding process less stressful, as we have never done this before. We are so glad we chose HUG! Thank you!

HUG built a bedroom and full-bath addition onto our house, and gave us a walk-out basement entrance.

Hire these guys, if you can get them.

One, HUG is large enough to have carpenters, plumbers, painters, roofers, flooring guys and more on the payroll, significantly decreasing the chances of encountering problems scheduling subs. We sometimes had four or more HUG crews working on any day and, to all appearances, they worked well together. Two, you will love their model. We had a webpage with our own project outlined and regularly updated. We always knew the schedule and the progress. They posted daily logs with photos of the work as it happened, including invoices, material needs, requests for homeowner input, and messages. Someone from HUG was on site working almost every single day throughout the entire project. Three, they are problem solvers. We have a 120 year old Craftsman. HUG worked with our architect’s drawings to resolve excavation challenges (the rocky South Hill…), code requirements from the City, property line issues, design-meets-slope questions, and retrofitting our plumbing, heating, and cooling systems.

Four, they are craftsmen. We can point to countless examples of their elegant work, and have all of those before-and-after photos. We regularly discovered touches or finishes that they added to the aesthetic . These guys know what they’re doing, took good care of our house, and were endlessly attentive to detail. It was an absolute pleasure to talk with any and all of them about their parts. They made suggestions we were happy with and were responsive to our questions and suggestions. They listened to our input and guided us through the process, every step of the way. We entered into this renovation with no relevant experience and some trepidation about significantly modifying our house. We picked the guys with vision, experience, and the skills to turn a conception into a house addition that looks like it’s always been there. They reroofed and painted the entire house to top it off. We think it looks fabulous.

Think about it. How many ‘contractor’ stories have you heard or repeated? How many of them feature the homeowners saying, “We enjoyed every minute of the process and are really happy with the outcomes”?

These guys are good.

We just finished a remodel of our kitchen, living room & entryway. HUG was terrific. First off: it was an all male crew and they were very comfortable to have in my home. I never felt uncomfortable with any of them. In fact, I grew to really like them all. Something I really appreciated was them saying "This is your house. We want to do this how you want it done." No arguments about my ideas or changes I wanted. Very, very appreciated. They were masters at problem solving too. We had several instances where things didn't turn out quite in-line and they solved the problems right there with a lot of ingenuity. They were amazing to work with and I think the outcome of our project speaks well of their creativeness and a job well done. We are so very glad to it done & every day just want to be home to enjoy it because it is so beautifully done. We will use HUG again in the future with out any doubts!

My experience with Hug construction has been excellent. They had great ideas and excellent communication regarding the construction of our enclosed sun porch. My project is about 95% completed. They have promptly responded to any questions and worked to resolve my concerns in a way that demonstrated dedication to my satisfaction with the work done. Work crews have been friendly, responsive and professional at all times. Project manager has been easy to access and even worked to provide me with ideas and resources related to another project I have been doing on my own.

HUG Construction has a very good reputation in Spokane that is well deserved. Their work is first-rate, they communicate well with the customer and their rates are very fair. My wife and I had HUG pour a new sidewalk and driveway, and we are very happy with the results. We will recommend HUG to our friends.

Hug was willing to work with me within my budget to make my project happen. Everyone I worked with from Hug was responsive and understanding to our needs. We ultimately finished the project ourselves (painting, trim, etc) to stay within our budget. But none of it could have happened without Hug doing the major build. We are totally enjoying our expanded Bedroom, kitchen, master bath and reworked stairs to the basement.

Edit:
I was contacted by the business and they are taking care of it. So I changed my review. It is the employee doing this, not them. Unfortunate he used a work van to drive off in.

I was at Ross and some middle aged guy, blond hair, tattoos stole a huge armload of clothes and got into a Hug Construction van and drove off with a get away driver. How disgusting to have someone like him representing your business in the community. He belongs in prison.

I would strongly caution anyone considering using Hug Construction for their remodeling needs. We did not receive the level of service or craftsmanship that we feel should have come with the premium price we paid for our remodel ($250,000). Communication was a major issue in our dealings with them. After completing the remodel our complaints fell on deaf ears, as we have yet to receive any type of response. Honestly, we wouldn't want them back in our home to fix things even if they offered, but it would be nice to at least be acknowledged. It is obvious they do not care about their customers once the check clears. Anyone reading this please beware of Hug Construction. Do not make the same mistake we did!

HUG Construction completely renovated an old deck structure on my house that was falling apart, and rebuilt as a finished and modern laundry room. The old structure was completely torn down. New concrete foundation was poured, framing was constructed, new electrical, plumbing, windows, and finishings.

The work was very good, and I am happy with the final result. The work took longer than expected, but there were some delays on ordering of materials and because of some other items that were really out of our control.

Communication with HUG and updates along the project timeline were good, and use of the HUG customer portal for payments and updates was also useful, as you can make payments and review invoices as they become available.

We used HUG to do a complete remodel on nearly every room in our house. Before even starting the project and having any guarantee of us contracting with them, HUG worked extensively with us to put the project together. Every element of our project exceeded our expectations. Doing a major remodel is a very personal project for a homeowner, it always felt like our overall happiness was a priority for HUG during the project. Titus, Josh, Stacey, Anthony, Brian, Byron, and Jay did a great job. We recommend them without hesitation.

HUG Construction tore down an existing shed patio roof and built us a beautiful new roof and new, extended concrete patio including new lighting and fan. It is a great new entertaining space. It was a great experience for us and we'd hire them in a minute again!!! The work is very high quality at a very good price!

Hug hit it out of the park on our front porch addition. Their design work was excellent, and their workmanship impeccable. Hug Construction has taken great care of my sisters and I from small to larger projects. Also, Titus & Elizabeth Hug are phenomenal employers to boot! My brother, two sisters, and I have all worked for their family and businesses for over a year and the closer we get to their family, the more impressed we are with their love for people and, values-based decisions. If I were building a home, I'd save for an extra year to make sure I could have Hug Construction GC my project. And they're so fun!

HUG did a fantastic job on our upstairs remodeling project, which included our kitchen / dining / living / laundry rooms, entry and hallway, and master bath. Custom fireplace build, custom shower and a one-of-a-kind custom stairwell railing are just part of the project that they undertook for us. Josh and his team kept everyone on track, on time and on budget. We used HUG previously to do a complete remodel of our basement, and didn't hesitate to reach out to them again for this project. We absolutely love our "new" home and would highly recommend HUG Construction to anyone looking for remodel or custom build work!

Service questions
1. Should I stay home during roof replacement?

It's not necessary to stay home during roof replacement. Roofing work is noisy and can cause vibrations inside the house, which might be uncomfortable. Most homeowners choose to leave during major parts of the project, but our team ensures safety and keeps you updated, whether you're home or not.

2. How long does roof replacement take?
+-

The timeline for a roof replacement typically ranges from one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and material type. Larger or more intricate roofs may take a bit longer, but we always aim for efficient, timely completion.

3. How to hire a roofing contractor?
+-

To hire a roofing contractor, start by researching local companies with good reviews and proper licensing. Request quotes from multiple contractors, verify their insurance and certifications, and ask for references. Always ensure you get a written contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms.

4. How to check if a roofing company is legit?
+-

Check if a roofing company is legit by verifying their business license, insurance, and local certifications. Look for memberships in professional associations, read customer reviews, and ask for recent project references. A legitimate company will be transparent and provide all documentation upon request.

5. How to choose a roofing company?
+-

When choosing a roofing company, consider their experience, customer reviews, warranty offerings, and quality of materials. Make sure they provide clear communication, detailed estimates, and a solid portfolio of completed projects. Local expertise is also a major advantage for understanding regional roofing needs.

6. How do you know if your roofing contractor is ripping you off?
+-

Warning signs that your roofing contractor might be ripping you off include vague contracts, pressure to pay large upfront deposits, lack of proper documentation, and unexplained price increases. Always ask for itemized estimates and written guarantees, and avoid contractors who avoid answering your questions directly.
