Our Amazing Experience with HIVEX Construction

We hired the wonderful team at HIVEX to finish the basement of our c. 1950 brick house. Working with them was a unicorn/trifecta of high quality, on-time delivery, and reasonable pricing. We actually *loved* the process—something we have never said before about a renovation project.

Services Provided
We added a laundry room, home office, rec room, household management space, and a guest suite with full bath and wet bar. HIVEX transformed our under-utilized basement footprint into a whole third of a house more for us. It's fresh, clean, and I feel like this was the greatest investment we could have made so far.

What Made Our Experience Exceptional
HIVEX is an AMAZING company. Charlottesville is a new expansion for them after decades of success in other parts of VA. We initially found out about them from a flyer in our mailbox. I cold-called them and from the very first conversation, to the meeting with owner/designer Chris at our home, to working with our dedicated project manager John and the awesome crew, it was incredible.
The process with them allows for just the right amount of customization. We didn't really want to have to make a million decisions or hire an architect. We just wanted a nice, fresh basement, done properly to match the rest of the house's look/feel. I feel like we got that and so much more. A true design/build experience without having to take on the burden of project managing, slow work or the displacement aspect.

Examples of Going Above and Beyond
They care about details and have been doing this so long they know basements through and through. They also work with the city to ensure everything is to code, approved and go above and beyond to ensure the quality of their product. The final carpentry and trim work were especially beautiful—and I was able to add a few built-in bookcases, open shelving, and other special details.
John and Chris worked with a really tall order from us for our usage needs (wishlist, various spaces) and a challenging window request, and they absolutely solved every problem seamlessly.

Quality of Workmanship and Professionalism
HIVEX employs their crews so everything is under one roof (no pun intended ;-)... And a lot of the team has been with the company for decades. I noticed that because of this the work was done quickly, with lots of manpower, expertly—tight and clean, and on time. They are pros and hire seasoned and experienced folks.
The whole team works really hard to create solid, quality basements. They don't cut corners (this from a very Type A client). The end results have exceeded our expectations.

Timeline and Budget Adherence
They never strayed from the timeline and the project actually wrapped up when they said it would—hence the unicorn comment! As for budget: the price quoted and signed off on was the price we paid. No surprises or mysteries. I loved that!

Communication Throughout the Project
The estimating/design phase was really impressive. Chris was able to come up with 3 smart layouts for us and patiently worked with me to narrow and refine to land on one that addressed all of our needs.
We always knew exactly what was going on any given day and they are proactive and thorough! John is an amazing manager, attentive listener, and kind and patient guide. He's also been at this a long time so nothing seemed to phase him and we always felt in-the-know. (I should also add he and his wife welcomed their new baby son while our project was wrapping up and that did not affect our project at all. We were taken care of during his time away and never felt out of the loop.) I also had such a nice time chatting with the crew members here and there. Everyone was so nice. The carpenters were really cool and so talented!

Final Thoughts
I really can't say enough about how great it was to work with this company.

I've already told them their next venture should be to do this genius system with unfinished attics ;-) Pretty please, HIVEX!?

They haven't done any work for me and based on their disrespect for neighboring properties- I probably would never use them.
They spend more time on cigarette breaks and smoke right in front of the other neighbor's house. They park in front of the neighboring houses and walk across their lawn when all then need to do is face their truck the other way to unload materials. They need to work on the big picture- rather than just getting the job done with as little effort as possible. Their work might be great but thus far- not impressed.

HIVEX made the project very simple and easy to get done. They have a very refined process which made decisions and costs very easy to work through. They even offered advice that made me consider better options from what I had initially planned. I'm constantly getting compliments on the new basement!

We had a great experience with Hivex, from the initial consultation and planning for the renovation through every step of the process. The communication through the project manager was excellent, and each stage of the process proceeded as scheduled, with minimal delays. Team members came out during snow and on weekends if needed to complete their work so that the next stage could proceed on time. With dedicated teams for framing, sheet-rock, plumbing, electrical and painting, the work was very high quality. I'd recommend them without any hesitation to anyone considering a basement renovation.

HIVEX is in the middle of our basement finishing job but it has been a dream come true from the beginning. There's many great things I can say about this company but I would personally like to shoutout Chris. From beginning to end he ran a state of the art project. Professionalism was a top priority as well as thoroughness of the job and I must say that everything Chris and company did from installing the wet bar, extra bedroom, and bathroom was just chef's kiss work. They even took the time to polish and dust off my NBA JAM arcade game so I could resume playing on it. That meant a hell of a lot to me. I plan to share some pictures and videos at a later time but I had to put the word out there that HYVEX was a Godsend due to their financing options. That is likely gonna make them the biggest basement finishing company in Central/Northern Virginia. I'm just waiting for an opportunity to do a testimonial video. So CHRIS, if you are reading this, I would like to make that happen as soon as possible!!!

I could not be more grateful for the experience I had working with Hivex. It was a long road for us, getting to a place where we were able to invest in finishing our basement, and after being scammed by a roofer shortly beforehand, we were incredibly wary of working with any construction again. But Chris and his team at Hivex quickly made our fears subside.
Not only did Chris take the time to patiently map out a potential layout with my husband, he was happy to make modifications to adjust to our budget, and work on our project in pieces to make it work for us. After receiving 3 estimates to finish the remaining 400 sq. feet of our basement, we couldn't be happier with the selection of HIVEX and the work Chris McNally and his crews accomplished in the space. While the house is 'new' construction (2-years old), this space was left as storage and general purpose, as well as the site of all central utilities: HVAC, water/well, water treatment and on-demand water heating. All of these areas had to be encapsulated and accessible. HIVEX came in under our estimate and under the time allotted to perform the work with strict attention to detail and a modern approach to on-site design that showed us what to expect up-front. Each crew (framing, drywall, electrical, plumbing, finish carpentry, painting and flooring) was meticulous in execution of the necessary phases leading to proper code compliance and our local inspections important for our insurance policy. From start to finish the folks at Hivex did an excellent job and I couldn't be happier. I was especially happy with Bob Salo, our project manager, who I interacted with the most at the company by far. Bob always kept me in the loop on how the project was progressing and promptly responded to a large change request (running high capacity wires from the electrical panel) as well as small extra requests at no charge (adding additional framing to support a chin up bar in the exercise room, removing 8 mm from the bottom of the exercise door trim which he did himself on the spot). After Hivex finished the basement and I had it painted and carpet installed I wasn't able to figure out how to pull TV cable/wire through the cord-hider wall plate since there was insulation in the wall. So I called Bob who quickly came over and was able to pull the cable through the wall using a specially designed fish stick. All of these extras were very much appreciated. I highly recommend Hivex if you are planning on finishing your basement.

They finished my basement 4 years ago. When I called recently to ask about cracks in my upstairs bedroom wall possibly being caused by the jack hammering that they had done, they explained that they didn’t think that was the cause. They came out and repaired the drywall anyway.

They do not install flooring or paint. But that was not an issue for me as I saved thousands by painting my self and have a good flooring company. I cannot speak more highly of HIVEX and would use them again.

The HIVEX team are rock stars. They listened to my vision, made recommendations and did quality work. Every workman was courteous and respectful. Even my dog loved them. Could not find a better group of people.
