Hemlock Homes completed our new construction home build in June 2025. We started our process of searching and researching (for months) for a custom home builder beginning in the Summer of 2023, signed with Hemlock Homes in Spring of 2024, and broke ground July 2024. We presented Bryan with a drawn-out floor plan idea on a literal piece of paper and within a few days it was in 3-D form, ready to tweak to our liking and be built with our hand-picked selections. Our team consisted of Bryan, Ryan, Steve, Bob, Dave, Corey, Stephanie, Mark, Sarah, Taylor, and Clint - plus all of the wonderful subcontractors. We cannot thank them enough for building our top-notch forever home. The detail, the effort, and the dedication into this project truly shows and we are proud to live in our Hemlock Home. We absolutely recommend Hemlock Homes for your custom build.

My wife and I recently completed our first major home renovation, a new kitchen, using Hemlock Homes and we’d recommend them to others as well as use them again.
It’s easy to recommend a business when all goes according to plan, but our recommendation is more than that as it’s based on how Bryan, Steven, and their team provided excellent customer service when the unexpected happened.

Earning the sale - Prior to starting our project, we received proposals from three contractors. The reason we chose Hemlock is because Bryan followed up multiple times by stopping by to confirm measurements, recommend design changes, and confirm that their proposal was best for our space and needs.

Unexpected changes – After demo and when our kitchen was down to subfloor and studs, we had to make a change to the plan which was going to set us back 6-8 weeks. We feared that Hemlock would be unable to accommodate the change as it was highly inconvenient and outside the initial scope, but they happily accommodated and kept in frequent communication during the delay.

Trust in staff – The people that Hemlock brought into our home throughout the process were very professional and polite, always taking time to educate us on what they were doing and why, which was great learning experience and also built value in the work they were doing.

Results – When all was said and done we are left with an amazing kitchen. The new flooring, plumbing, electric and lighting, drywall, cabinets and countertops, sink, appliances, and finishings took what was a 30+ year old and enclosed kitchen, and transformed it into a modern kitchen/dining area that’s perfect for entertaining.

If you are looking for a customer home builder I highly recommend Hemlock Homes. We used them to build our forever home. From the very start they were very responsive and the whole process was seamless for us. They clearly and regularly communicated with us letting us know how things were progressing. This being the first time for us building a new home, I was fully expecting some stress but with Hemlock Homes our experience was stress free. Pricing and cost were laid out clearly with no hidden or unexpected cost. High quality work and high quality people.

Hemlock was one of the home builders we met with in hopes of making our dream come true. Unfortunately we never found the land we wanted and ended up buying a home that came up on the market. Six months later we had a house fire that required a complete demo of our up stairs and a decent amount of repairs on the first floor and basement. We already knew we wanted to work with Hemlock Homes for the remodeling portion of our home repair. The insurance adjuster said that the amount of work would probably take 9+ months based on their experience. Hemlock was able to complete the work in under 5 months, which was greatly appreciated after being displaced from our home. Communication was great and the staff was always quick at responding to text, emails or phone calls with any questions and concerns we had. If we didn’t like the options they had at their design studio they were more than happy enough to work with us and find/install exactly what we wanted. Over all we are very pleased with the work that was done and the time frame they were able to complete the work in.

What a wonderful experience. From designing our new house, through selecting all the details of the house, to the actual build. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. And, kept us informed on every step of the build with reports, pictures and videos.

My wife and I built a house with this company. We started building with them during COVID, and throughout all the COVID problems they still pulled through and delivered a beautiful home! Hemlock recently undertook a very specific project for me where I needed concrete garage floor replaced that was above living space - so a very delicate project had to be done with the demo. They knocked it out of the park. Great overall experience!

We just completed our bathroom remodel with Hemlock and it was truly a great process from start to finish. Everyone was kind, knowledgeable and respectful and treated our home as if it was their own. Their attention to detail and meticulous workmanship was not unnoticed. We appreciated all of their input with small changes or questions that came up throughout the project. Hemlock is not a reliable builder. See how long you wait for a promised response or quote, if you get it at all. I was told my remodel was a bigger job than they want to do... they build homes, I'm not sure I understand that logic. We were highly disappointed with the lack of customer care, as was my daughter who contacted about a new build, she felt she was lied to about the cost and process. I would never recommend this builder to anyone. No stars if possible.

We chose Hemlock Homes to refinish our basement and couldn't be happier. Bryan and Steve were on it from day one and Levi crushed it with the carpentry work. The process remained smooth and organized for not so cookie cutter basement remodel. We would highly recommend Hemlock Homes and would use them again in the future!

We had a very good experience with Hemlock Homes, starting with the quote process. They were responsive to my inquiry and came quickly to review our job. We had our laundry moved to the first floor from the basement and filled the rest of the room with pantry storage. They worked with me on the pricing as the quote went up significantly after we designed the room. They were so kind and wanted to get me where I needed to be with the price, which they did. The job started off really well and progress was quick until we realized the wrong size cabinets were ordered. The depth was discussed in person with no documentation, so I was worried about getting push back, but Hemlock did no such thing. They came up with a solution and modified the cabinets to the desired depth without question. While all their workers were respectful and hardworking, Levi and Matt were especially great to work with. Levi was very knowledgeable on the modifications of the cabinets and kept me informed every step of the way.
The outcome is gorgeous. The cabinets and flooring are high quality. The plumbing was done very well and everything is clean.
Reasons I gave a 4 not a 5:
-We had a few hiccups where the ordering of parts was not done correctly. I had emails to them with some of my selections for the cabinets, but they did not come as discussed. Hemlock did make it right without question, but because of this, our job was delayed a few weeks while we waited for the correct and missing material to come in.
-The dryer vent situation was not properly thought through, but I do not blame them completely. It was decided to use an existing vent in the basement, so they drilled a hole in the floor to access said vent. Well, this causes the dryer to stick out several inches more than the washer. Had they vented out the wall as originally planned, this would likely not be an issue, but no one really considered that at the time. While I would expect the contractor to realize this, we did also see the plan and approved the vent solution. I just hate how the washer and dryer are not lined up.
-Also, Hemlock was a bit more expensive than other contractors for this job, and specifically a lot for a ‘laundry room/pantry’ job. We chose them because of their reputation and their perceived quality, and they did not disappoint. Their customer service is impeccable with proven high quality, and that’s what you’re paying for.
Overall, I would 100% use them again and look forward to the next project. The personal touch, high quality materials, and expertise made for a very good home renovation experience.

How do I do more than 5 Stars?
The Hemlock Homes team is an amazing group of people. They started out by helping us review a plot of land we were wanting to build on. They lined up a soil expert to review the plot and showed us potential issues with it all while trying to make it work for us and without any guarantee we would build with them. After we decided not to build on that lot they helped us find a new lot and worked with us to design and build the home we had always wanted. I have muscular dystrophy so having one level living that was ADA compliant and as flat as possible was important. We discussed many things during design to achieve this and they went above and beyond making it flat including walkways from driveway to house and from garage into the living area. We never once felt like we were getting taken advantage of as we worked through our special needs. They even helped us with a custom window seat bump out with builtins that my wife always dreamed of having. They even helped us design in a space to hang a stained glass piece we had designed and commissioned for our 10 year wedding anniversary that we wanted to showcase in our new home. They communicated every step of the way and responded to our sometimes crazy questions with professionalism and promptness. I cannot speak more highly of this company or their team and I would 1000% recommend them for custom home building and remodeling. Thank you Hemlock Homes for all you have done for us!

I moved into my new house earlier this month and I absolutely love it! I came to Hemlock without a house plan and not even 100% sure that I wanted to build a new home on the property I owned, which already had a small older house on it. After meeting with the team and getting to know them, I decided to move forward with the project (which also included tearing down the old house, putting in a bridge, and moving a shed) and brought to them a house plan. The design phase went quickly and smoothly, and I was able to design the house that I wanted and that would fit my needs. They were able to start the project sooner than anticipated; however, there were some unanticipated issues with the land and the build had to be delayed. Hemlock worked through the issues and took the necessary steps to make sure that they were building a solid house for me. My new custom built forever home turned out even better than I had imagined and I couldn’t be happier with it!

There were some early bumps in the road with hemlock while we were working through home designs and pricing during the land purchasing process as well as some unforseen expenses during excavation, but once we started construction hemlock did a great job. Bob from the construction team is top notch. He knows his stuff, responsive, friendly, and overall a fantastic project mgr. Hemlock built us a great home and we are happy with the end result.

Our entire process with Hemlock was more than we could have ever asked for. These guys(and girls ;) ) are awesome. Hemlock Homes finished our basement for us and we could not be happier with the quality, service and responsiveness we experienced with them. Both Brian and Steve were great to work with and made sure everything went smoothly throughout the process. We built our home through Schumacher Homes three years ago and I wish we would have used Hemlock to build the entire house after seeing their process and attention to detail from our basement alone. Hemlock Homes remodeled our primary shower. The tile and niche look amazing. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for home remodeling. They were very professional and had great communication throughout the entire project.

Hemlock Homes removed my load bearing wall and put in the LVL beam. They were absolutely amazing! on time, communicated with me through ever step of the process. 10/10 would recommend to everyone.

Apparently, I'm not allowed to add a 2nd review. We've been in our home for over 2 years now, and we've had some issues pop up here and there. I will say Hemlock has been extremely responsive on every question, inquiry and service request. Typically, Bob or Ryan are out here within a week and we have a solution identified shortly thereafter. Just amazing post build customer service. I cannot state that enough. There has never been a debate. We still tell everyone if we had to do this all over again, we would choose Hemlock.

Original Review:
In the Pittsburgh area, you are extremely limited with affordable new build home choices, let’s say $300-500k to simplify the market and rule out Eddy and Infinity homes type builders. I’d compare Hemlock against builders such as Maronda, Ryan, Heartland, Wayne and Schumacher. We have built with Maronda twice and been involved with friend’s builds with Ryan. With those builders, you will be in a plan, and will have a cookie cutter type houses and limited property. You will have minimal structural flexibility, and they will over charge you to death for finishing touches.

Looking to move out of a plan and get a truly customized house we did our research with Wayne and Schumacher over two years. We even did meet with Hemlock once briefly. Wayne and Schumacher have some great floor plans. Just like Maronda and Ryan, everything is an upgrade, adding big money to get some nicer touches. Wayne and Schumacher will say they offer a truly customized home, and yes that is true. You can move walls, add rooms to their existing floor plan at a cost. Another thing is they will only manage the construction of your home. You as the owner are responsible for land prep, permitting, drainage, driveways, utilities, landscaping etc. Lots of hidden details and fees here when you really look into your municipality requirements. I can’t remember with Wayne, but I know Schumacher would do it for you at a price. After thoughtfully giving up the idea of being a general contractor for all exterior needs, we went back to Hemlock.

Hemlock offers a turnkey product. They do EVERYTHING. Permitting, utilities, landscape, driveway. This is the one thing they do that’s like buying in a plan with Ryan and Maronda. Just sign the contract and everything is handled by the builder. Pricing was very simple as well. There was a set price per square foot for a ranch, and another for two story. This was not like Wayne and Schumacher. They have different prices for different plans, and the sq ft price never aligned from one plan to another. With Hemlock, no matter the layout of the house, you knew your base sq ft cost before you did anything else. Hemlock offers a completely customized home. You could bring a plan from the internet as a starting point or use one of their previous plans from other builds if it aligns with your needs. For us, with land limitations and specific layout needs in that space, I drew out my plan myself and Hemlock took it and ran with it!
So that’s the quick comparison.

• Issues: Hemlock was very quick to address mid-build issues. If we had a concern or request, they were on it. They were also quick to address our new neighbors’ concerns, and even took down a dead tree on the property line at no cost. Post build, we had a few service issues pop up, all very minor, but they were addressed very quickly, sometimes next day.

In closing, if you come from Maronda and Ryan, you will be blown away by the difference. If this is your first home, or first new build, the sky is the limit. We are very happy with the home that they have built us. We would definitely build with Hemlock again.

We were fortunate enough to have a reliable friend recommend Hemlocks to us! We were also fortunate that Hemlocks started and ended the work in a timely manner to allow us to enjoy our space. They did a complete design and renovation of our basement. After the completion, we soon hosted two large parties, and everyone marveled at the beautiful space that includes a gym, a guest room, an office, a full bathroom, a storage room, and a kitchen with a pantry. Most importantly, my husband finally has his own space! (I gave them 4 stars, and not 5, because we still wish that we had gotten mirrors and dance barres for the gym.) We would return to Hemlocks if we need another basement of our dreams. Our project manager Steve and the crew that worked on our space were professional and delightful to correspond with. We are very proud of our basement!

While Hemlock is still a fairly new company, they are the most experienced and professional contracting company I’ve worked with. They’re extremely professional, they take great pride in their work and the cleanest group I’ve seen. This was important as our project took a few months and we needed the space to be livable during this time. I would not only recommend them to others, I would use them again in a heartbeat!

We used Hemlock Homes to do our master bathroom remodel. I’ve used other contractors in the past, and I’ve never had such a positive experience EVER. The project lead was on time, at my house, at 7:30 every day, and at the end of the day let me know he was leaving. Every member of the team was friendly, and respectful of my family (great with kids). They took every precaution to protect and keep my house clean, and as little an inconvenience as possible to daily life.

When my husband & I left our first meeting with Hemlock we didnt know where or what we wanted to build but we knew we wanted to build with them. We got along with the guys so well & knew they could build exactly what we wanted. We were also blown away by their craftsmanship when we toured a few of their existing homes.

Hemlock Homes cares about you and your home. They can build you a nice quality home for the right price. Even with the cost increases during COVID they stuck to the initial quote. From what I’ve heard about other builders this is not common. Anyone who has built a new home realizes the stress involved but the owners and employees do whatever possible to help mitigate that stress. They are extremely responsive and in the end we have our dream home that we will enjoy for years to come. I highly recommend Hemlock Homes. My wife and I appreciate everything they’ve done.

Our experience with the ownership and management was less than exceptional.
Communication between members of their own team seemed nonexistent, communication with us during the building process was the same. Someone on the team would tell them that something had been completed or fixed and it was clear that no one would come out to inspect the work because a lot of the time the work was not complete. This happened a lot during this process.
Changes we had made along the way were not communicated between the team and often missed.
Pricing was not always correct. We would be quoted a price for something and then it would change, or square footage would be calculated incorrectly. Both of these things caused issues with our budget and changes to the plan th
On the points of communication, attention to detail, and professionalism we could not recommend Hemlock homes to anyone looking to build or buy a house and for our sake we hope to not find any more issues from the ones we have already have. We had an issue with almost every phase of construction, from designing the blueprints to not receiving keys to all the doors in the house, areas were left dirty and building supplies are still on property. We had Hemlock do a couple of remodeling projects in our home. They did wonderful work, were very professional, and met the tight deadline that we had needed for completion of the work. We would highly recommend them!

They turned our bonus room that was done horribly into a functional nursery.

They staying in constant communication and when there were issues (water and termite damage), walked me through everything that was going to happen.

The workers are local and had no issues with our crazy animals, kids and schedule.

We used Hemlock Home Building for a large remodel job at our home. They renovated almost our entire first floor, including kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom and hallway. My 20' x 16' deck needed to be completely replaced, which included demolishing the existing deck, railing and staircase. The short version: This is reputable and trustworthy company that does excellent, detail oriented work and excels at customer service.

The longer version: I was scheduled to begin my kitchen renovation just as everything shut down for the pandemic, so I was first on the list when the construction trade opened back up. The crew was careful to wear masks and clean/disinfect each day, so I was comfortable to proceed. The project got off to a great start.

Then things went awry, due to Covid-19 related problems with the supply chain. Hemlock Homes was in no way responsible for the resulting delays and difficulties, but they took 100% of the responsibility for them. They were open and transparent in their communications—no b.s.—and kept me informed even when the news was not great. Then they went truly above and beyond to obtain the missing pieces and get them installed as quickly as possible. And while I was annoyed at the delays, I was always confident they would make things right, and they did.

Bryan and Ted are great guys and easy to work with. Of all the bids I got in for my project, this was the only team that truly listened to what I was asking for and developed a plan to reflect my vision of the space. The work crew and the subs were also all great guys and I was always comfortable having them in my home. They all showed good problem solving skills in dealing with the quirks of an older home, and took great pride in their work.

I love my new kitchen and can wholehearted recommend Hemlock Homes.
