Here's why: They installed brand new 5-inch gutters with five 3x4 downspouts. Now, a 3x4 downspout should ideally offer 12 square inches of space for water flow. However, I later found out that they had only made a 2x3 hole for the 3x4 downspout, which is only 6 square inches. To make matters worse, the actual measurement of the opening is even smaller at 1.75x2-3/4, providing a mere 4.1 square inches. That's a mere 34% of what it should be. The impact of this on me, as a homeowner, is a frequent blockage of the downspouts. A single leaf can start the process of clogging the minuscule opening. It's easy to tell when they're blocked because they overflow, which leads to additional problems. Moreover, a 20-foot length of gutter above my front door, held up by 6 brackets, is not providing adequate support, causing the gutter to sag and overflow. There are more unsupported gutters around my house. I've since reached out to a gutter specialist to fix these issues. I wouldn't want the original gutter team to return, but I would always welcome the roofing crew back. The new gutter specialist will install 3x4 'cut' openings and insert the proper drops for the 3x4 downspouts, as well as secure the supporting brackets that were left unattached.
