They have been good to us over the years. Helping with many different projects. The owner had some health problems, and the new management is even more helpful. The latest project they helped us with was an update to our basement finishing, which included an apartment for our daughter, who is getting married. As usual, they did it for a great price and with professionalism. Thank you for all of your help over the years.

Douglas was on time, very thorough, and cleaned up after the job was completed. He is a supremely talented craftsman, and I give him the highest recommendation!

Austin is a great project manager. He took the time to answer our questions and keep us informed throughout the basement finishing process. We had one complication that was quickly resolved. Once lighting was installed, we noticed a long, poorly finished seam in the ceiling. Despite the basement being nearly complete, Austin and his crews had the problem resolved in three days. Fantastic service.

Finished basement, reasonably priced. They were on time and the quality is great. They are knowledgeable and was really helpful. Definitely will use them again.

Did a great job on my basement hide away. Did what I wanted, corrected my design flaws, fixed code issues in my design. finished on time.

I love our newly finished basement. The process wasn’t perfect but was surprisingly smooth. It took 11 weeks to finish. I was expecting it to take longer. Thanks for the quick turnaround.

The basement was finished on time. I’m grateful because I needed the space. It was so much cheaper to finish the basement than to buy a new home. This make our current home so much easier to live in.

Affordable Basement Pros did a great job on my basement. The pricing was just what we needed in these difficult times. The painting was especially good.

Had them finish the basement. Plus two small rooms. Scott does great work when he shows up. I don't deal well with people that commit to a time then do not show at all over and over. Dusted our entire house. Did not hang anything for dust mitigation. We did all the cleanup over and over. Honestly. I doubt I will ever hire another contractor.

Promised 12 weeks to complete a basement. It took 7 months. Lots of excuses and apologies. At one point I was told the job was tedious. COVID was blamed but if the job had been finished on time then COVID could not have been used as an excuse. Their painter was also terrible. He didn’t properly mask one of my windows and the paint is stuck to the window now and it won’t open. The contractor in charge kept saying that they had a terrible painter and that he was forced to use him. That sure inspired confidence but he was right. They also up charged for higher priced lighting that I didn’t agree to. I tried to call JD several times to complain but he never answered. He also never replied to any of my emails. I would never recommend this den of thieves.

I had JD Richards come give me a bid to finish a basement. I hired them, then I never heard from JD again until I called him last week. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with this whole process. Scott Critchett was the Project Manager he assigned to finish my basement. Like the other reviews I have read, I signed to get started May 2020, and as I write this, January 2021, we are still waiting for a small final item to be completed. My basement became "livable" and pretty much complete in November, so about 6 month-ish finish time.

If you would like someone who does a pretty good job at his craft, but is slow, doesn't return calls or texts well, rarely shows up when he says he is going to show up, and is unreliable across the board, Scott is your Guy. I am not completely unhappy with what is completed, It is the service that is not good.

What pushed me to this review, is the fact that I paid up my part of the deal in November, but my basement bathroom tub spout they installed didn't work at that time. I had asked Scott about fixing it and he said he would make it happen for sure. I haven't seen him since. He has text me a couple times, and I have talked to him once in the recent 2 months, him saying he is sorry, with a number of health and other reasons why he hasn't made it back, but says he will be here soon. Finally, getting upset, I reached out to ask JD what we could do to get this resolved. JD was unaware of course, but he then assured me he would get back to me in a couple days and get this resolved. That was last week. I have text him to follow up with no response.

This should not be this hard, all I want is for them to finish my bathroom so we can use the shower... This review would have gotten an additional star or two if I didn't have to deal with such a hassle these last couple months. From a professionalism standpoint, I am super disappointed, and can not recommend this company, or Utah Basement Specialist, as they go by on their bid, or anywhere JD Richards or Scott Critchett is working.

RUN! Far and fast from Affordable Basement Pros. Let's review:

October 2018:
Looked at the website that promises basement completion in 8-12 weeks, communication daily throughout the project, and clean work space. Spoiler alert, none of those happened in our case.

Had JD out to the house for a quote. He seemed very nice and friendly. He dropped several lines that I felt were intended to gain trust from the local demographic. I remember him mentioning his dog "Hinkley" on several occasions and he also talked about being "honest in his dealings". I am not Mormon but familiar with it enough to know what he was trying to do. Still, this was best estimate we received so we decided to proceed. When we got the quote in an email JD mentioned that they do 70 basements a year and have great quality and will finish 90 days after getting a permit. HA!

Early November 2018: Signed the contract.

December 2018: Hmmm, there is little to no progress happening. That's weird. Well, it is the holidays. But wait, I still have to work... wouldn't they? Lots of calls and texts about what is going on. Lots of excuses. Doug (project manager for our basement I guess) broke his phone. A few things got done but only because we nagged.

January-February 2019. A lot more of the same stuff from December, minus the excuse of the holidays. I will mention here that we did have one issue that would have caused a delay. We wanted to knock out a wall and put in a beam. I am not unreasonable. I understand there are moving parts and that takes time. So how much of a delay? Well, Doug and JD didn't set any expectations for us. So... maybe a few weeks? A month? I mean, down the road there are town homes that have been started and finished since we signed the contract so surely this won't be a 7 month project.

March 2019: We have reached the point where we are ready for our first inspection. Yay. Doug kept giving excuses... the city is busy, they are booked. So, I email the city to ask. Guess what the city tells me? Doug hasn't requested an inspection with them AND they have nothing on file for my property. The permit had never even been filed. Is this how the get around that initial claim of finishing the basement 90 days after getting the permit? That's misleading.

On the 19th the inspection happened. Doug came to the house to collect Payment 2. He sat at my table and told me that the basement would be done in 3 weeks because things move fast after that inspection. Maybe it seems like I am a disgruntled customer who is making details up. Nope, I recorded the conversation. He said it would be 3 weeks with the possible exception of carpet in which case maybe it would be 4 weeks.

April 2019: I called JD. He was so nice when he came over back in October. Honest in his dealings... dog named Hinkley. I told him all the troubles we had had. I asked what can happen to get this done. I asked for a commitment. I asked how our troubles would be compensated... like, a discount on the project for all the problems maybe. He had the nerve to say to me "if you are wanting to negotiate price maybe we need to get your husband involved." Um, excuse me? Don't think a woman can handle business? I have been polite until now but I can get ugly if I need to. So after all that things started to move. Probably because we reached out every day and made it very clear that we were fed up. JD told me that Doug was fired. Yeah right.

Communication was horrible. So many excuses. Some of the contractors were good like the finish carpenter who put in our entertaining center shelves and the electrician who did all the wiring. Towards the end we made deals with contractors directly which ensured that things got done and saved us from paying this horrible company a marked up amount. We ended up paying the insulation directly, paying the electrician directly for some things, and getting the carpet done on our own. If I had to finish a basement again I would just hire contractors, I wouldn't use a company like this.

This company is an absolute disgrace. We finished paperwork at the end of February. They have an 8-week start-to-finish guarantee. They told us they would cut out our basement walk-out on March 8. They didn’t even get to that until a couple weeks ago (it’s almost mid-July). We’re going on week 19 this week.

Let’s say I give them the benefit of the doubt for their poor execution and slow timetables. Their communication is the part I have zero tolerance for. They don’t respond to messages, they leave us in the dark, and nobody knows what’s going on. NOTHING happens until we call, text, email, etc. time and time again. If we hadn’t been in contact, I’m sure they wouldn’t even have started.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this company. Not sure what the future of our basement has in store. Will probably just call ‘em and let ‘em know we’re done. I don’t know.

I AM ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED WITH THIS COMPANY. I was given a timeline of 10-12 weeks, once we signed the contract. Contract was signed January 11th. Here we are, June 24th with no end in sight. The floors are wobbly, the doors are bowed, the walls are curved. None of the light fixtures were the correct finish. Oil rubbed bronze AND chrome fixtures in our bathroom? We went weeks without seeing or hearing from anyone about doing any work.
We were told there would be a contractor per week in our home. We went a month with no work.
Them cleaning up after themselves is laughable. Theres still a 3 foot rectangular sheet of drywall IN MY BATHTUB, 4 months after they came through.
And don't get me started about one of their contractors shimmying open a basement window and letting himself in to do work, WHILE WE WERE OUT OF THE COUNTRY! We specifically told Doug and JD that we would be gone those dates so no work was to be scheduled.
No one takes responsibility. All you get is pointed fingers and dragged in circles.
100% would NEVER recommend this company.
Run the other way.

Had an consultation with J.D. on October 1st 2018 to finish our basement, he came over and said he would get back to us in a couple of days with the bid. I texted him a few days later and he said he was still working on the bid, never got back to us with it, we called and called, never answered his phone, left messages and never called back. I am very dissatisfied and I would not recommend this company to anyone. Had to call another company to finish our basement and it looks amazing and you guys missed out on probably a $20,000 opportunity!

From dirt lot to move in my home builder took 19 weeks. We are on week 18 of the basement finishing and no end in sight. Once I realized that I needed to do a pre-job with every sub and I had to talk directly to the subs to get what I wanted when I wanted them done, things went better. However, that leads to the question, "why pay a general contractor 15% markup for them to essentially give you a referral?"

Subs that worked on my house:
Electrician: Great
Rough Carpenter: Great
Finish Carpenter Good
Plumber: Poor
HVAC: I hired out Larsen Heating and Air was awesome
Carpet: I hired out AFS Flooring and they were fantastic

After a long shopping process, we went with Affordable Basement Pros for our Basement finish. Needed more room for the kids and an extra bathroom to relieve the congestion upstairs. Overall the project went well. The project did take a couple of weeks longer that we thought it would, there was scheduling issue with one of the subs that threw things off. So, the project was two weeks late but they kept us informed throughout the process. The basement turned out really well and we really love the additional living space and especially like the much shorter morning wait time for the shower. We would recommend them for your basement finish.

They were underhanded and sneaky. Did not fulfill commitment. Job was GROSSLY over due and they had no regard to putting us out. Selfish and deliberately manipulated us and the construction trade rules. They take advantage of their customers not knowing or understanding the details that comprise construction. Please beware!! Ask questions. Read details. Follow up. Have an attorney read contract.

I'm posting this review through my son's gmail account, so pay no attention to the Boom Box name.
I recently moved to Suncrest, and needed my basement finished to add play space for my son. Basement Pros were fantastic. Their price was very fair, and workmanship excellent.
I was impressed they used the windows to access the basement, as to not disturb the household. I also was very impressed with their ideas of how to create the most wide-open space by moving pipes to build the bathroom in the corner, rather than the middle of the basement, where it was originally planned.
I live in the the city of Draper. The only negative experience with the basement finishing was waiting on the City of Draper for the permit and inspection. It took forever, which is no fault of the company, but worth mentioning in case you live here.
I'm not sure how many crews this company has, but I would recommend asking for Scott and Nate. They were my main contacts, and ALWAYS promptly returned my calls and texts, were always very informative of the schedules, etc..I highly recommend these guys!
