My roof was badly damaged in a wind storm. A-Star Roofing did a great job of replacing it. They removed two layers of roofing—an old tar and gravel roof and a newer torched-down membrane roof. At the last minute they were able to procure and install a TPO membrane roof, which was suitable for my low-angled roof and was unavailable at the time the roof was damaged. They accomplished all this in just four days and at a very reasonable price. The roofers were hard-working, skilled, and reliable. They performed a good clean-up of my yard. I have had the opportunity to work with A star roofing a few times. As a realtor I often need advice from roofing professionals on the quality of a roof. It was surprising that on a couple of the roofs their professional opinion was that it did not need repair and they were honest about it. He researched an unusual attic insulation system we had to make certain the new roof we got would be compatible with it. He met us at the supplier to make sure we liked his recommended shingle (we did). His crew was polite and professional. I had Gerry come out and inspect my roof after a storm had tore a small section of shingles off. After a quick inspection Gerry informed me of all of the problems he saw and provided pictures of each. Unfortunately it couldn't be repaired and needed to be replaced due to age (25+ years). He was very knowledgeable and explained everything thoroughly. I received his quote the next day and was also provided with a detailed description of everything that was going to be done.

It only took 3 days for Gerry's crew to complete the job. They were very accommodating and made it incredibly easy to get a DirecTV technician scheduled to reattach my dish so that I wasn't without live TV. They did an excellent job and kept my yard clean throughout the process.

My wife called them and the owner, Gerry gave her options to either repair the roof or replace it. We decided to give A-star a chance because I noticed the good reviews and I noticed that Gerry was responsive to the poor reviews and tried to make things right.

He came to do the inspection and first recommended to just lay shingles over the old ones, which I respected that he wasn't just trying to give us the most expensive job. When he heard that we were staying for the length we were and that we had a previous leak and suggested a roof replacement.

At the supply store he showed us different products and I could tell that he keeps up to date with roof technology, which we appreciated. We were expecting a much more expensive cost and were so happy to hear the estimate.

Gerry and his crew were great to work with. In less than a week they tore off our old roof down to the plywood and installed the new roof. The workers were fun and very professional. They cleaned up afterwards, the best I have seen. Things could not have gone better and we would recommend A-Star Roofing.

Everything about our experience with A-Star Roofing was excellent. Our estimate was timely and reasonable. The employees did a very good job, even in the summer heat. Gerry, the owner, responded quickly to calls and made the whole process fast and easy.

We had a leak in our roof and we weren’t sure if we needed a whole new roof or just a smaller repair. The first company I contacted told me that we’d need a new roof without much of an explanation, but Gerry came by next and told us our roof would last a few more years, that we just needed the smaller repair for now, and he also noticed a missing rain cap (the other company failed to mention that as well). I am very impressed with the work Gerry and his crew did with our house. We looked for quite a while to find a roofing company we could trust as I had heard so many horror stories about fly-by-night roofing companies causing so many issues. My wife reached out to Gerry and he was very responsive and respectful. All communication with him was very prompt and overall he was just a dream to work with, something that seems to be rarer and rarer in the construction world. He met with my wife and I to pick out our shingle type and color and showed up exactly on time. His pricing was very fair and I felt we got a great value for the quality job his team did.

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE:

NEW EDIT: Gerry has called my work phone that I called from twice yesterday after my poor review. He then called my husband's cell phone to try to win him over for business. My husband told Gerry that we will take our business elsewhere because I obviously felt belittled on the phone. Gerry then proceeded to call me today at work to talk about the poor review. This being the 4th call for a one star- rating that Gerry obviously cannot handle, I told him he deserves the one-star rating and did threaten stocking/harassment as this is the 4th phone call over a review that I honestly don't care to discuss anymore with Gerry. I told him not to contact me anymore. A good business owner doesn't respond to people so aggressively, as mentioned in the previous one-star review. As Gerry says, you "folks" be the judge, but a real business owner can handle a one-star review. Obviously Gerry is desperate for the business he will lose over my rating :).

This business does not even deserve a star for how I was just talked down to on the phone. I am not one to leave reviews for businesses, but I am still in shock after ending the phone call. I went through and read the other reviews that customers had posted about feeling this same way. I was trying to get a quote for a house, and instead of winning me over, Gerry lost our business. He can reply and call this a fake review, like many others that he has responded to all he wants. All he did is tell me that he runs around doing quotes for people and doesn't get paid. My thought for you is this Gerry, maybe with better over-the-phone customer service (not belittling potential customers), and if you actually had good quotes for people to begin with, people would actually do their roofing business with you. Good luck to you Gerry, and I hope you might treat the next potential customer with some respect.

It has taken us a long time to write this review. We even considered not posting it at all, because we didn’t want to just complain. But the more we thought about it, the more we realized that we wished someone had warned us about what we were getting into. We could not in good conscience, then, remain silent about our experience.

The best thing we can say about Gerry Heaton of A-Star Roofing is that when the work was finally done, it was acceptable. But our entire experience with him was so frustrating that we would never recommend him to anyone. There are many roofers in Utah County who can do acceptable, and even exemplary, work. It is hard to imagine that there are any others who will do so with such a disappointing combination of excuses, delays, and rudeness. If you want details, read on. But our bottom line recommendation is: STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.

Our negative experience with Gerry can be summarized into four categories: delays, excuses, treatment of others, and compliance with city and state regulations.

1. DELAYS. A new roof should take around a week, once the work starts. We signed a contract on May 12, 2017, and work commenced the first week of June. The job was finally finished on November 8. Yes, that’s more than 5 months from the time work started until the time it finished.

2. EXCUSES. Gerry spent more time during those five months making excuses for delays than he spent actually attending to the work. He blamed anything and everything except himself: migraines, family issues, weather, other jobs, Orem City, “my guys didn’t do that right,” and on and on. He never, ever took personal responsibility for anything, even though his name was on the contract--and on the company.

3. TREATMENT OF CUSTOMERS. Pretty much the only time we were treated with courtesy was when Gerry was making the pitch to get our business. Once the contract was signed, the treatment changed completely. Gerry regularly made appointments or agreed to meet at a certain time, but then didn’t show up. Sometimes he let us know he wouldn’t be there, but usually he just didn’t show. He always had an excuse--but see our comments on excuses above. More concerning with regard to treatment, though, was his frequent rudeness and aggression, both on the phone and in person. One time, for example, when one of us asked for an explanation of one aspect of the work, he rolled his eyes and dismissively said, “OK, I’ll explain it for the 100th time!” But in fact, he had not ever explained it to the one who asked the question. 4. NON-COMPLIANCE. Gerry did not apply for the required city permit before the work began, nor did he ask us if we had done so. In fairness, when we went to the city offices to check on this they said that technically the permit is the responsibility of the home owner. But they also said that it is the responsibility of the contractor to work with the owner to make sure the work is permitted. When we asked Gerry why he had not mentioned a permit, he said something like, “the city just slows things down,” and indicated that he does not usually apply for a permit. When city staff were helping us get the permit we learned that his state license had lapsed. We had actually asked him once if he was licensed, and he said he was. But it turned out that we were having a non-permitted job done by a non-licensed contractor. Lesson for homeowners: Make sure you get a permit, and confirm that your contractor has a current license.

In the end, we have a roof, and as far as we know it has not let in any rain or snow. But other than the initial contacts when he was trying to secure our business, our entire experience with Gerry Heaton was frustrating and filled with unnecessary delays. We cannot recommend him.

My roof had a leak every time it rained. I called quite a few roofing companies over several weeks, & ultimately chose A-Star Roofing. A-Star Roofing did the best work at the best price. They were knowledgeable, negotiated with me, gave a very reasonable price & resolved the issue. While on my roof they noticed several other things that needed some repair and took time to fix those at no extra cost. Five stars!!

He came and looked at the roof before giving us a quote to make sure the quote was accurate; he also helped us select the new shingles. Our roof is so beautiful now--it's really de-aged our home!

Saved money 3 years for a new roof. Read the previous review and figured I was choosing the right guy, I was wrong. Gerry was never on the site. His guys did install a new roof, but never finished the job. Once he was paid he didn't care anymore. Cable wires were hanging down all sides of home, cut and cable gone. Rusted fixtures left on roof, which were supposed to be replaced and painted to match. Talked with Gerry multiple times and each time was told he would come finish and fix the problems and concerns. I have given him over a month to finish and make right. I have since had to hire someone to finish what he started. Very disappointing. Was not nice to me or my wife. Very disappointed in what should have and could have been a great experience. I would definitely go elsewhere.

Gerry was great to work with! We got bids from several companies and his bid was the best for the same service and product. I signed the contract late on a Friday afternoon. The shingles were delivered Monday and installed the next day. The guys who did the work were clean, efficient, and so nice! Thank you for making this re-roofing an easy process!

Totally happy with this company and am here to tell you that Gerry runs a great company... at least my experience was great!
