Our experiences with Unity in building our home…. We couldn’t possibly be happier. It was a struggle getting it designed and built during COVID, and we got frustrated with the slow pace of construction, increasing costs, and unavailable materials. We signed our preconstruction design contract in January, 2020. House setting was complete in early February 2021. We finally moved into the house in late September, and the house was “finished” in mid-December.
The end result is a 3BR, 2BA Xyla in mid-coast Maine. The two big design goals were to build it with an emphasis on using environmentally-friendly materials and processes, and to be resilient to Maine’s environmental challenges. Unity’s excellent design team listened to us about our requirements and how we hoped to live in the house. They made numerous changes to their Xyla package to accommodate them. Unity used quality materials and excellent quality construction techniques in building and assembling the house. Everything just seems to work. That is actually pretty hard to accomplish. We were fortunate to find a local general contractor, Emerald Builders, who was very experienced in building high performance homes. Together, they built the house so tight (0.24ACH50), we were told that was a Unity record at the time. That airtightness, triple-pane windows, and insulation made it easy to relax comfortably in our house during the cold snap 10 days ago. We saw -13oF lows and 5oF highs for 2 days. Our mini-splits kept the house at 70oF the entire time. We never even heard the 50-60 mph winds. With the ERV running, it’s no big deal to keep the RH comfortably in the low 30% range. We bought an indoor air quality monitor, but turned it off after a year of no alerts. Our battery backup system have made us oblivious to short power outages. The one 27-hour power outage we had just before Christmas was no problem. We did fire up our wood stove for the first time for backup heat for a couple of hours, but that was as much to make sure it worked properly as for the heat it provided. Our solar system has easily made us a net zero house, including powering an EV. Yes, just a superb house.
From the very beginning our experience with Unity Homes was very positive. We started our project during the midst of the pandemic and conducted our business with Unity Homes via Zoom meetings.
They were professional, informative and helpful. We were very impressed with their design esthetic and program. We never travelled to the physical plant, but were convinced that they were the company to design and manufacture our XYLA in Rhode Island. The advice we received over the course of the project was sound and extremely helpful. When the time came to assemble the house on site, the Unity team was engaged, professional, and efficient. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Unity Homes as partners for your modern, energy efficient, modular home.
My wife and I are now living in our Unity/Bensonwood Xyla home. We feel so comfortable, secure and thoroughly delighted with the final result of our collaboration with Unity Homes. We live 1,700 feet up on a mountain in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. We fell in love with this land. We wanted a home design and a home building company that would respect and care for our wishes and needs throughout the building process. Unity has done that and more. Sustainability, net-zero, green practices and longevity were very important to us and Unity has delivered a home that works very well in all these areas. Furthermore, everyone at Unity has shown a sincere dedication to the excellent quality of their work and their care for us as customers. We knew so very little about building a home when we started working with them four years ago. They guided us well, presented options and allowed us to choose what we desired. And it worked! We now move through a lovely 1,700 sf home with impressive wood beam construction and expansive vaulted ceilings. The Logic windows are incredible and for the first time in my live, I will not have to suffer with storm windows or screens. Our garage is huge and has a loft space for even more room. We were concerned about closet space, but this home offers more than enough room to store all of our belongings. The porch is another superb addition to the house. The mechanical systems are smart and intelligent and it was easy to add devices like a car charger and hybrid heat pump and a solar panel array to the home. No fossil fuels here and that makes us happy. The home blends into the site and area so very well. I found working with Unity to be splendid in every way. We did a Tempo package and there was a great deal of effort needed to work through a pandemic, supply chain issues, increases in costs, let alone the usual effort to get a package delivered to a remote spot on the planet. Unity's staff stayed with us the entire way. They worked well with our General Contractor also. We are so glad we chose to build our home with Unity.
