I would like to start off by saying their quality of work was great. They removed some trees/shrubs , grounded a stump, added dirt, reseeded, and leaf blowed our front yard.
What removed 2 stars for me was the inaccurate estimates and last minute surcharges. We got an estimate for 2 different trees, a cottonwood tree in our front yard and an elm tree that loomed over our power cords in the backyard. Miles was the one who came out to give us the estimate. He quoted us $2,600 for the cottonwood and $3,250-3,500 for the elm. They were priced more fairly than another company, so we decided to go with Tony's.
They were originally busy with another project and said would likely be available at the end of July. We agreed that they would let us know when they would be done with their first project. On a weekday afternoon around 2PM--- minimal notice, they knocked on the door while I was in a meeting and parked all their equipment on our lawn and sent a text asking me to move my car out of the driveway for a tree cutting the next day. We confirmed pricing and they started work the next day. There were 2 cottonwoods that were attached at the base with one leaning, so I confirmed with a worker if the leaning one was also coming down and he informed me "yeah, I think that's part of the plan." I took his word for it and that was where the miscommunication unraveled. They were planning on only cutting down the straight cottonwood and stump grind, removing the anchoring roots for the leaning one, leaving risk for it to fall on someone/someone's car. When it was around noon time Tony, the owner, texted me to come out to see their progress as they were getting to wrap up. I asked what happened to cutting down the other half of the tree. That's when Miles jumps in to mention that stump grinding would remove the anchor roots for the tree that was leaning. Tony states that removing the leaning tree would be an additional $1,000. While Miles admits that he didn't realize the 2 stems of the tree were attached so close at the base due to shrub coverage when he came to give us an estimate. So now after they did some work the estimate shot up to a whole $3,600.
Not only that, Tony also takes this opportunity to say that the estimate given to us for the tree in the back was also too low and he would have to charge more. At this point, I asked how much more since another company quoted me $4,000. Without much of a second to think, he answered that he can match that because he was originally thinking he would have to charge us $4,500. (Keep in mind the original quote given for the elm tree was $3,250-3,500). So this lead me to question why they even send out an employee to give quotes when they are not accurately prices and only for the owner to come in and throw out another higher price? I do want to value their work, but I do not trust a company that cannot give an accurate estimate and seems to throw numbers around like it is a game of "the price is right". At first I paid the whole amount because there really wasn't much I can do since it was either have a leaning tree of doom or pay. My husband ended up calling the company the next day and Miles offered to match the estimate we got from the other company and refunded us $400, so the total came back out to $3,200 to cut the cottonwood. Again, we do not have an issue with the quality of work, but just the way business was handled left a sour taste in our mouths. There should be some changes to prevent issues like this from happening in the future.
Room for improvement:
-Provide customers with a written estimate with a picture on the quote of what is confirmed to be removed
-Try to pay attention to details of things to avoid a sudden surcharge
-Confirm with customers before dropping off all equipment on property
-Confirm what work will be done day before or day of, but a written quote with picture will solve the issue
-Train employees who do not have the power to make decisions to let customers know that they don't have the answer and inform customers of who can provide concrete answers.
Great job on tree removals. He was prompt with getting me a bid. Also, showed up soon to do the job. Most to my surprise was when i came home tonight...where the stump was removed, dirt was brought in and grass was seeded. Thank you for cleaning up.
This team is amazing! They worked all day to make our 40+ yr old trees so beautiful. They cut for hours, hauled over four trailer loads of branches out, blowed out the lawn and debree from our backyard toys, raked up the debree, & were very fair priced. Will always use this company going forward!! Thanks Miles and team for being amazing!
